I have given up using the touch screen for naming things. I had a spare bluetooth keyboard that i now use for naming tracks. A bit much but now i can give tracks and projects etc, useful names 😅
This is what the MPC was in the beginning (MPC60) Midi Production Center. We used to midi everything in the studio to the MPC from keyboards to efx racks. Thanks for showing the MPC root of operation.
I've used several models over the years. Basically sequenced on every pre Renaissance model except for the 5000 and 500. Add the 1000 and 4000 for sampling. I used all other models in full capacity.
Well I finally pulled the trigger just now and ordered an MPC One+ based on your video. I work on a pc all day for my job and the last thing I want evenings and weekends is using the same pc for making music with my synths. I used to compose with an MM-T8 and later a Yamaha QY70 with external gear. Been looking for computer-free composing method for a while. Very nice track btw!!
Taking your ideas from basic sequences to a beautiful rough track is awesome and instructive. So many artists don’t demonstrate the complete process like this. Inspirational use of technology. Keep these videos coming!
This video is huge. Would love to see more external sequencing of the outboard gear. So many videos for the current MPC line are about in the box production and audio capture. I am interested in your workflow for incorporating internal MPC sounds, live sequence capturing, and live performance with external gear (i know you have done a bunch of this) specifically with a multi-song performance. Keep up the excellent work! You've helped my workflow considerably!
I have an MPC One arriving in a few days and got it specifically to be the centerpiece of my MIDI setup. This video was super helpful. I agree with everything this commenter said. Thanks and amazing tracks 🔥🔥🔥
One thing I forgot to mention is that the gear, after being plugged into my analog mixer, is sent to my MOTU interface from the direct outs of the mixing board. So what your hearing as I'm playing is the analog mix feed, but in the "Idea #1,2,3" you're hearing the direct outs recordings, mixed in Ableton. Hopefully that makes sense!
So, each equipment has a line out (stereo or mono) going to a channel on the Mackie Mixer. And each channel of the Mackie goes to an Input on the MOTU, and that's the interface connected to the computer and Ableton Live? So you record one track for each equipment on Live? Why not go directly to the MOTU? Because you are monitoring stuff (your headphone) through the Mackie? Another reason?
Yup, two reasons, 1) no latency monitoring from the Mackie board, which also gives me quick access to some fx sends if I need them (or EQ, gain adjustments), and also I can patch gear in and out really quickly from the board via inserts and a patch bay. 2nd reason is I don’t always like to have the computer on, so this setup allows us to write for days without the PC on (capture ideas to an iPhone for remembering stuff if needed) and then track into the Ableton when we’re ready.
Tefty & Meems this is super helpful. I’m also running several synths, including a Peak, into my MPC live through a Yamaha mixer. Mine is only stereo out, not capable of multi-track records so that’s a limitation, but I’ve been recording tracks into the MPC. I actually haven’t gotten as far as adding a DAW into the setup as a final editing stage, but maybe someday. I’m trying to force myself to work with the equipment I have now. I have a TR8S as my drum machine and it’s really performance oriented, so I play patterns and then have been recording audio tracks into my MPC, I might try and integrate MIDI more, we’ll see. This video is a huuuuge help regardless as I feel like I have a very similar setup and you are light years ahead of me in knowledge and skill, so please keep them coming! May I ask what MOTU interface you use?
The new mpcs are the most powerful machines on the market. Not always the most fun, or intuitive, but what you can do with them at this price point is just awesome.
This is EXACTLY the tutorial I was looking for. I also love sampling vinyl plus I wondered if my MPC Live 2 could work as a midi clock/controller as well. My days of struggle have finally ended. Thank you!

Has inspired me to buy an Mpc one and Tascam model 24 mixer, which enabled me to completely remove my Daw from the same room. Can just pop the Sd card out of the Tascam and load in either individual tracks or the mix down straight into cubase.... if I need to, i stress. Thanks again!!
Great stuff, just got a One and have only explored sampling and sequencing so far. Already had the sends set up to my mackie 1602vlz and it was sooo easy. Like seconds to get armed for recording scratches in from my 1210s. Time to hook up my synths and TR-8! Appreciate the crash course ❤

This is cool, thanks. I've been circling the MPC ONE for months, as I do RC505 with a JDXi, Deepmind 12, MODX7 and Novation Circuit, along with my lead and looped vocals. Its got killer finger drumming capabilities going, there's a fairly steep learning curve but the sound quality is outstanding and worth learning how to use it.

Man, I love this video. I'm a film composer/producer who's been using Cubase for 20 years, but now I want to put together a small, live setup for me and another composer to start gigging. I just started looking into what's available for hardware sequencers, and the way you are using the MPC, is the same way I used Cubase when I first started. Man this is great. When I decided to build a Dawless set up, I employed a very similar concept but with the Maschine Plus as a midi sequencer, and after experimenting with other gear such as the Toraiz Squid, Pyramid Squarp, and others, I settled for the AKAI Live because its midi capabilities and routing options.
Fascinating video @TeftyMeems. I'm looking to hook one of these up to a Korg Nautilus, as a sequencer. The idea being: 1. Akai is the hub and clock. 2. I use the _instruments_ and _keys_ on the Korg by USBMidi. 3 Output Korg audio to Akai (via any of the 4 Korg Aux-out) and sample midi tracks real time (kinda like a faux 'bounce down'). 4. Take all Akai audio output and input to Korg and mix in for accompaniment. 5. All final audio leaves Korg to master output. In effect, I have a completely DAW-less set up.

OMFG! Idea #1 was fucking glorious!!! Meems is always so incredible!!! I come for the awesome Tefty MPC tutorials, and end up just blown away by the stuff you guys create.
Love the video. I get, entirely, the concept of using outboard instruments sequenced from the MPC X to create songs. I've done this from the start using my old keyboards, a DX7 and a PA-80. Luckily I have 4 MIDI DIN outs...lol. A recent addition is a Dreadbox Erebus which runs from CV and funny old thing, the Behringer 'D' model which drives bass. I still have to create percussion internally but will be looking at an Elektron when I can afford it. All this runs through a Yamaha mixer. As an edit; I use an Akai MPK261 keyboard controller which is connected via USB MIDI to the MPC X. This actually talks very nicely to the MPC and gives me a lot of control directly from the keyboard.

Brilliant demo. I normally prefer instrumentals, but Meems vocals remind me of Sonique and sit really nice with the synths. Honestly, idea #1 is one of the best things I've heard in a while - truly beautiful work.
As a user of Akai MPCs for 25 years now (time FLIES people) I have to say that Akai lost it for a good few years back there with the MPC. I stuck with a modified 2500 for years because of that. I loved that machine and knew it inside out. With JJOS installed I was using audio tracks as Tefty does here way back and its been my very productive workflow since then. Recently took the leap to an new MPC X and have to say that it is a fine, fine machine. Feels every bit the classic MPC workflow (straight to the point, minimal moves between you and and your ideas) but is now truly flexible with the more modern studio. It can export to, and be a controller for Ableton now. It can run 8 -tracks of stereo audio internally, and if you do choose to connect it to your computer, then the software can run on there and you can continue to use only the MPC screen and hardware as you now it but now use VSTs installed on your machine. An MPC with UAD plugin suite and Spitfire Audio sample playback?... Yes please. Built like a tank and solid as a rock too. That, plus what feels like constant updates and improved features makes this veteran user really happy. Great machines once again.

This was a nice video. For me it is kind of complicated at the moment. I own a MPC x and sequence everything through it (I use hardware only) for the final mix down I am currently unsure what I like more. Tracking out to Ableton or recording 1 to 4 tracks a time on the MPC. They both have their advantages and disadvantages. Using Ableton is familiar and I have everything at a glance. But the use of a mouse and keyboard in music making just annoys me. Especially since I sit in front of a computer too much anyway. The MPC on the other hand is a device that makes me use my ears more again. And hey, my mixes are hands down way better when not using my eyes too much. And the MPC is so hands on that it reminds me of my early music making days. I am slower though because I have to track out individual tracks one after another. But on the other hand once that is done I can keep all gear off and just work on the MPC. Quick mixing idea before bed...switch MPC on, adjust setting, go to bed. No startup of a PC, loading stuff, getting my audio interfaces ready, aso. My process is different from most of the people anyway since I work entirely in mono and only create “pseudo stereo” in my final mix. That has to do with certain facts. 1. I mostly own monophonic analog synth and using mono on the polys as well makes Signal processing way easier. 2. With pseudo stereo I have way better control of the position and stereo field of an instrument in the mix. 3. More channels to use on an interface 🤷🏽♂️ effects that make a mono Signal stereo are stereo though. So there is a point in the chain that is stereo but that is for the most part at the very end where there is no hardware limitations.
i cant separate that one synth part from he joe. but this channel is fire. very helpful for seeing whats possible with the mpc and routing. i have a digital mixer and some hardware going along with the mpc and routing has been a bit of a headache. ive got it all working at the moment but i just know there has to be a better way than how its set up now.
Loving your collabs and deep-dives into the gear setup. Super helpful and inspiring. My workflow is fairly basic. Using a KeyStep Pro or NDLR as the sequencer and then into a bunch of synths (Korg Volca Bass, 0-Coast etc for drone/bass), Volca Drum, Volca Keys (for poly pads). Recording the stereo mixer output into a Zoom H4n with a bit of post-production polish done in Audacity.
So few gear tutorials actually involve making actual music with someone else, which is what it’s all about. Hopefully! Great voice, great ideas, great to see how the ideas came together. I really wanted that F major to work too. Subscribed!

Another inspiring video and demo. Because I can't concentrate on a computer (too many distractions), I have been stuck in a sound-on-sound perpetual loop with cheap hardware. If I can put the effort into mastering the basics on the mpc one, I should be able to break that.
Really nice tutorial. I tend to use MPC Touch same way but for audio interface I use Behringer XR18 which is also my mixer , this gives me possibility to mix all audio channels of my all syths separetely, send it on separate channels and have better control over it later (adding VST effects, etc.) in any DAW. I also think this kind of setup gives more freedom and inspiration :)

As an edit; I use an Akai MPK261 keyboard controller which is connected via USB MIDI to the MPC X. This actually talks very nicely to the MPC and gives me a lot of control directly from the keyboard.

Brilliant demo. I normally prefer instrumentals, but Meems vocals remind me of Sonique and sit really nice with the synths. Honestly, idea #1 is one of the best things I've heard in a while - truly beautiful work.

As a user of Akai MPCs for 25 years now (time FLIES people) I have to say that Akai lost it for a good few years back there with the MPC. I stuck with a modified 2500 for years because of that. I loved that machine and knew it inside out. With JJOS installed I was using audio tracks as Tefty does here way back and its been my very productive workflow since then.
Recently took the leap to an new MPC X and have to say that it is a fine, fine machine. Feels every bit the classic MPC workflow (straight to the point, minimal moves between you and and your ideas) but is now truly flexible with the more modern studio.
It can export to, and be a controller for Ableton now. It can run 8 -tracks of stereo audio internally, and if you do choose to connect it to your computer, then the software can run on there and you can continue to use only the MPC screen and hardware as you now it but now use VSTs installed on your machine.
An MPC with UAD plugin suite and Spitfire Audio sample playback?... Yes please. Built like a tank and solid as a rock too. That, plus what feels like constant updates and improved features makes this veteran user really happy. Great machines once again.

Since this video was made, the latest firmware update 2.10, adds the ability to use USB audio interfaces, to send/receive multi channel audio 🙂
This was a nice video. For me it is kind of complicated at the moment. I own a MPC x and sequence everything through it (I use hardware only) for the final mix down I am currently unsure what I like more. Tracking out to Ableton or recording 1 to 4 tracks a time on the MPC. They both have their advantages and disadvantages. Using Ableton is familiar and I have everything at a glance. But the use of a mouse and keyboard in music making just annoys me. Especially since I sit in front of a computer too much anyway. The MPC on the other hand is a device that makes me use my ears more again. And hey, my mixes are hands down way better when not using my eyes too much. And the MPC is so hands on that it reminds me of my early music making days. I am slower though because I have to track out individual tracks one after another. But on the other hand once that is done I can keep all gear off and just work on the MPC. Quick mixing idea before bed...switch MPC on, adjust setting, go to bed. No startup of a PC, loading stuff, getting my audio interfaces ready, aso. My process is different from most of the people anyway since I work entirely in mono and only create “pseudo stereo” in my final mix. That has to do with certain facts. 1. I mostly own monophonic analog synth and using mono on the polys as well makes Signal processing way easier. 2. With pseudo stereo I have way better control of the position and stereo field of an instrument in the mix. 3. More channels to use on an interface 🤷🏽♂️ effects that make a mono Signal stereo are stereo though. So there is a point in the chain that is stereo but that is for the most part at the very end where there is no hardware limitations.

i cant separate that one synth part from he joe. but this channel is fire. very helpful for seeing whats possible with the mpc and routing. i have a digital mixer and some hardware going along with the mpc and routing has been a bit of a headache. ive got it all working at the moment but i just know there has to be a better way than how its set up now.
Loving your collabs and deep-dives into the gear setup. Super helpful and inspiring. My workflow is fairly basic. Using a KeyStep Pro or NDLR as the sequencer and then into a bunch of synths (Korg Volca Bass, 0-Coast etc for drone/bass), Volca Drum, Volca Keys (for poly pads). Recording the stereo mixer output into a Zoom H4n with a bit of post-production polish done in Audacity.

Another inspiring video and demo. Because I can't concentrate on a computer (too many distractions), I have been stuck in a sound-on-sound perpetual loop with cheap hardware. If I can put the effort into mastering the basics on the mpc one, I should be able to break that.
Really nice tutorial. I tend to use MPC Touch same way but for audio interface I use Behringer XR18 which is also my mixer , this gives me possibility to mix all audio channels of my all syths separetely, send it on separate channels and have better control over it later (adding VST effects, etc.) in any DAW. I also think this kind of setup gives more freedom and inspiration :)
