      I love that kind of thing too! On American Viscountess recently, she was talking about the restoration of a 500-year-old façade with the man who has been doing it for the past several years, and you could see the interior craftsmanship in the walls, which were built by people in the Elizabethan Era! I would find it INCREDIBLY satisfying to work on that kind of thing, and I'm sure would be just as driven to do it properly.

    Hey, Kaleb. I just wanted to say that when it comes time to replace the garage door, while it will be your natural inclination to do it yourself (99% of it you could), the tension spring that makes a 130 lb. door feel like it’s nothing when raised can be extremely dangerous to wind up and you should definitely hire a professional to do that.
    The limestone work is looking great!

    • @Lucinda_Jackson
      @Lucinda_Jackson 2 роки тому +10

      Good point! We needed to have the door and spring replaced once and while they were tightening it, something came loose and it nearly took his head off. Made a humongous hole in the new door and everyone was too shaken up to continue that day! They had cautioned us to stay inside and keep all children and pets away from that part of the house and to park our cars out on the street.

    • @jnmatas
      @jnmatas 2 роки тому +9

      @@Lucinda_Jackson OMG. I’m glad someone could provide a legitimate cautionary tale. Tension springs are kind of an esoteric subject, and I only found out about it after an accident damaged my garage door, with it being stuck halfway up the track, and I had to quickly put in a new one to prevent all the woodland wildlife we have on our property from getting in. After I researched it, I basically had to shield myself when I dislodged the old door, knowing that the cables would snap up. After I put in an identical new door on the undamaged track, I definitely wasn’t going to mess around with the spring. I just figured I’d say something, because like Kaleb, I try to learn how to do things on my own, and then do it. Haha.

      If you live long enough, you either are at the center of a cautionary tale for a given situation or you know know someone who is! 🤣🤣
      We were young and complete idiots at the time and my husband wanted to just install the door himself. I talked to the door company about the price of installation because my husband was NOT a handy person and harbored delusions about his abilities! 😂 I was the handy one l, but he was the strong one so it worked out. Anyway, the door guy recoiled in horror at the idea of anyone attempting it. It takes a special tool and a professional to know how to do it correctly and get the tension even. And it’s STILL dangerous! I just decided to surprise my husband and made the appointment for the installation so he could come home and find it all done. I was glad when I saw that man 🤏 this close to death.

      We were sitting in our living room watching t.v. when there were about 5 large crashes heard in the attached garage. I went to investigate and found the tension spring had snapped a the The pieces had bounced around the room, damaging the drywall. The amazing thing was our new car was in that garage when it happened but 5he bouncing springs entirely missed the car.

      You just stole my thunder! Out here in LA, thieves will steal historical bronze fixtures off of monuments! They cut off the ornate filigree bronze lanterns off of a local BRIDGE to line their pockets!!! This place is another wild Wild West. No laws, no protection.
      Any kind of bronze, copper, etc, if it can be sold for scrap, it will disappear in HOURS!
      A local grocery store lost an antique metal sculpture from in front of the windows in thin air and of course no witnesses. It’s heartbreaking.
      Please lock this stuff up in your basement! PLEASE!!!!

    Much of the wrought Iron fencing, in my little town was removed and melted for the war effort. The few that are left or been replaced have bricks and a stone cap with the iron set into the stone. The black and white tiles you used in the bathroon normally ran from the gate to the kitchen, and a path to the edge of the property under the window, If you want I can add google diections for some nice examples in the UK. In the years prior to 2020 we were hospitalized with pneumonia and also bronchitis. We live in a high pollination state and it doesn't help with allergies and problems with immunity. I pray we don't get Covid as hubs is not well and I am not in the best respiratory shape myself, just trying to not eat out or mingle in big crowds so far or go to tourist heavy places. I think it would probably be better if you wait until much later to put up the fencing incase you need to move something large onto your place like equipment or large appliances, etc. Will you have the rust blasted off or will you do some kind of at-home chemical treatment? Once that fencing gets painted, it will look glorious. Those appliances are really neat. I know older appliances last many years, and would outlive many grandparents. LOVED the treasure hunt into the garage. Thank you for getting beaten up by the door in order to show us!! Soon as I saw the wrought iron railings I THOUGHT you were going to say it was the original CROWN on top of the house. Disappointed it isn't but still delighted it will fence off yours and the Hall property to make it all inclusive if you can secure that extra land. The masonry work on the front of your home is coming along nicely. Your patience and care for detail and design really stand out on projects like that. The house is going to look beautiful when you have completed all that work. Another great episode, Kaleb, Kim and Dad, plus Atlas and the other pups. Thanks very much indeed as usual.

    All those windows stashed in the back could be turned into a great little greenhouse for the garden...tucked in the back as they aren't period correct but it would be great when building up the garden on Mr.Hall's lot!
    Love the passion u bring to the house & history in general. U r a true artist!

    If you don't have enough fence posts you could build masonry posts at the corners of the lot and also at gates. They could be adjusted in size to make the fence work for the length of both lots. You could also add a masonry post every two or three sections if needed. One other thought I have seen the wrought Iron fences with like a 1 foot masonry wall under them it makes maintenance much easier because weeds don't grow in the fence.
    I am so excited to see the stone repair it looks great. I can not wait to see the Mansard roof replaced. If you get to do the front windows as well this year it is going to look amazing. So excited for you both.

    Everybody needs a deep freeze, especially if you plan a B&B Inn, I actually need 3 deep freezes for flash freezing and freezing meals that just two of us can't eat plus buying meats on sale and stocking veggies. Imagine using Mr. Hall's yard as an actual garden or at least part of it in a sunny spot. You could save by growing your own vegetables or do a neighborhood garden which is very beneficial for a community. I hope you manage to acquire Mr. Hall's plot as it would really increase the value of your property.

    They sure made things built to last back then that refrigerator from the 40s and 50s and still works perfect unbelievable now they make s*** the last 10 years if your lucky and the refrigerator will last you 10 years and a washing machine maybe five? In the old days they would last 20-30 years when I was a little boy My grandmother used to wash on one of those things with the washing machines with the rollers on it that you would put the clothes through the to ring them dry and until my dad finally bought her a brand new washing machine. This was in about 75 or 6 right around then.

    It's amazing how the patches at the front of the house have got it looking more like a home, at least to me. It's almost like an external example of all the love you are pouring into your home!

    That refrigerator is the best they ever made and you will not have any problem selling it on line. And it's RETRO! which is so IN now. I had my mother 's for 12' years. Before buying a new frig in the 70's, And even then a dealer came and bought it for 40 bucks it was from the 50's.

    Kaleb, you are forever amazing me with the care and dedication that you take with the repairs on your home! You are so detailed and fastidious in the work that you do! Kim shows me those same qualities as I watch her polish brass and clean crystal! The Charles S. Brown home couldn’t ask for more conscientious caretakers than the two of you! Love you guys! and keep these awesome videos coming, along with your hard work and sweat equity! You two are amazing! 👍😊❤️🐕💕🐾

    I loved the opening with the spooky clouds and flashing lightning. Halloween material indeed.
    It was fun to see the garage interior and it must have been a bit of work to reseal the opening since it seemed unlikely the old door was going to be of much use.
    I'm truly looking forward to seeing the mansard restored. Your limestone repairs are amazing but I'd guess most don't notice from the street. The mansard is so visible it's repair will probably cause those who live in and around your neighborhood to stop and point.
    I don't know if your neighbor would be willing, but I'd like to see the restored mantel you've done for their home, back in place. Obviously with no personal family details, justed the remounted/restored mantle back in place, proving to all those nay-sayers who said it could be done that it actually could.
