- Gary’s back in LA to finish up where he left off, trying to a get a 1958 Mercedes 190SL running again. With a new fuel tank, carburettors and more waiting for him it should be a straight forward job, but there’s no such thing as any easy restoration…

This is one of my favourite channels to watch on UA-cam.
No silly music and properly narrated.
Keep up the great work Gary .👍🏼
What an enjoyable video. The accompanying music is spot on.
Wonder if it’s Lee again?
I cant stop watching - i definitly had this car in my past life - making me feel so emotional …i know nothing about cars and just drawn to this stunning old car
I know. It’s a 1958 car but just 20 years later in 1978 cars had lost their beautiful lines and it seems design had lost its way. Think back 20 years ago from now and cars then look exactly the same as they do now. Ugly boxes. You look back to these well built classics, curvy and lavished in chrome and wood and think what the hell happened?! Regards.
Such a calming presence Mr Mavers with extreme expertise. A pleasure to relax with. Outstanding.,
Love watching Gary's resto adventures--and the change of scenery to LA was an unexpected treat. Gary's knowledge and patience and willingness to do the job right, combined with his self-effacing English charm and good-nature, make this channel a must-watch. I look forward to each new episode.
Your channel has become most remarkable. The production values are off the charts and the best of this genre. Your background shines through in that aspect.
“ A pair of gloves might help, dickhead” 😂 we make these comments in the shop 👍
I feel and understand your frustration with the 190SL and give you much credit in not pouring gasoline on it and calling it a day. You take on projects that others would / could not, and again, much credit Gary.
Steve McQueen doing repairs, lovely!
"5000 miles away from home.. With a car that's slowly falling apart.." - that was really nicely put.
Gary…good call on retaining the tank. If I could make a recommendation…when removing the old filler cap rubber, take some isopropyl alcohol and clean the paint, then apply a bit of carnuba wax, then install the new rubber…that way, you’ve got paint clean and protected underneath and you don’t have to wax around the rubber and leave residue
The interior of that car is simply stunning. ❤
Such a pleasure Gary watching and listening to your latest video! Thank you very much. 🌴👍👀🥊
Gettabettacarburetta was the slogan above the Liverpool Carburettor shop I worked in over 40 years ago now..which relates quite well to parts of this episode.Again, thanks for all the retro mechanics memories brought about with these videos .Keep up the good work…Hasta La Vista
Your love of detail is beautiful.
Yep, enjoyed that video - calm and thorough work. Gentle music helped to calm the frustrations !..thanks..
Love this channel's content! Gary, I don't know why you aren't a UA-cam superstar but I'm so happy you are making content we can enjoy with great commentary and beautiful cars.
Brilliant Gary 🎉
Good effort. Lovely to see. Keep going, enjoy the journey.
I dont know why, but you are damn so polite, especially the way how you are describing everything. Subscribe
Makes me appreciate my old (but not rusty) Toyota. I had an old Mercedes once too - when I was younger...
Can't wait for the next part of this. The way you fix things reminds me of my dad.
Reminds me of the lucky charms commercials back in the day . Something endearing about this video that you just want to keep watching .
Thankyou
Good episode! Thanks. Seems you've just aout got the audio sorted out, which is nice. Thanks again. Really appreciate these.
Mr Mavers, your video production is an aesthetic triumph!
thanks for another good video.. like your calm pace, good information and that it's not only the task, but us information about the cars you dive into.. Brian
Great XKS cabriolet ride in California. Nice 190SL too.
Just love your pragmatic and practical approach to the work you do. New to the channel, enjoying immensely 👍
Can say, one of best Interesting & enjoyable you tubers. Keep up great work Gary. Always enjoy ur fantastic and practical approach to viewing.
Gary's videos are so inspiring, a pleasure to watch!
Love this channel
“I never like to start a job that I can’t finish.” That’s what real mechanics say. They don’t want a vehicle leaving their workspace if it isn’t right.
Cant wait for the next video
I hope that you ate paasing all off your wonderfull and amazing knowledge to others so the next generations can continue your amazing job
Great video Gary, 👍🏻😀
Look how little rust is on all of the nuts and bolts compared to uk cars. It must be a pleasure to work on.
Didn't know that about your parents sorry to hear that. Back in the 1980s all the cars we worked on as mechanics still had asbestos in the brakes and clutches and some of the mechanics i worked with would carelessly blow the brakes out with an airline causing a dust cloud in the workshop 😢
I know. Crazy times!
Great job. There is still lots of work ahead. Cars need to be used and not parked over years. 😊😊
Really enjoying this series, what a beautiful car this is going to be!
Hi Gary, I would flash the starter solenoid before changing the starter you may get lucky
Can’t wait Gary .
wonderful Gary!
The key was only slightly benz. In the sun in the City of Angles, 5000 miles away from home with a car that's slowly falling apart, which one, the Mercedes 190SL, or the Jag XK8? Terrific stuff, I love it.
Really enjoyed this episode, thanks!
My classic Mercedes C180 Auto, 1998, is insurances through you in London
Nice one Ashton!
My new favourite channel 👍
Many thanks!
Nice going Gary. Just one thing, a dust mask will give little protection against the inhalation of asbestos. Please, use a half or full face respirator, utilising a P100, (coloured purple) cartridge.
Best videos on you tube.....brilliant
Great episode again Gary! Boss location to be working on a car too!
Why didn’t you challenge the re-manufacturer about the crack in the casing on the fuel pump?
Dan needs to be buying the tools for you I hope!
Yes he’s buying the tools!! Be much easier and if make much better progress if I wasn’t driving all over the place sourcing stuff though. The parts place is great. Replaced the pump and allowed me to return the tank I didn’t use. Just a case of a bad supplier I suppose. It happens. It’ll make a lovely car. Regards.
Panning for rust with the bucket like the gold miners of yesteryear
try some 0000 steel wool on your metal parts if you have over spray or slight rust. You can get it a home depot or lowes because it is super fine it is used to polish
I'm sorry about your parents, Gary. Asbestos did in another car enthusiest, Steve McQueen.
It's unfortunate the tank didn't need replacing, however impossible to know without draining the fuel and still good to remove sedament. Just as replacing parts before they break.
Another example of "life getting in the way" of getting a lovely, stylish, 50's sports car back on the road. That failed fuel pump casting.....grrrr!
Just helping a friend in America
😎
Pull on a loose thread...and look how much unravels.
Choke Cable.... for the Owners who leave these things to rot... ( KIDDING!!!!) At least the Miss' knows where you are. Or as Jay Leno once said Better to Reek of transmission fluid than cheap perfume . Can't wait to watch Part 3, you seem to be enjoying yourself.
Ace.👍
Nice car from Philippines
After a long lay up this is all predictable. Its just what happens to the human body when its not doing any exercise. This has to be one of the nicest roadster ever made.Sure looking foward to the start up now.
Should be wearing safety glasses when working under cars, especially old ones.
i see what you mean fly me out i buy you a pint ha brilliant the jet set mechanic what a lovely car gary every thing you touch turns to gold do you remember the song good days
Shame I didnt know you were you going to be in town, You could have had a short stop off in Texas here with me :0)
So good this episode Gary. One thing I didn’t quite understand was why you chose to fit new carbs to the 190SL rather than refurb the existing?
I gave him the option Michael but he decided that considering the magnitude of the work required coupled with the lack of time and no tools, that the best option was to buy new. Of course I could’ve rebuilt them but I think it was the right call. Regards.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
back on without a clean mmmmm
You a good m8
Gary you could play the part of Steve McQueens son in a film. Maybe a script could be written? Just saying that's all.
Thanks for the kind comments and for watching Roger. I’m ten years older than Steve when he died so I’d probably be playing his father!! Regards.
When you had the bumper off why didn’t you buff out the corrosion on the chrome?
Us benz 😜
If your in Cornwall , U.K. . Come an look at my Fiat panda 4x4
🤘😎🤘
Hi Gary great video but I can’t find part one for some reason?
Ditto 😂
If you look through Garry videos you'll see one titled 'Mercedes 300SL Roadsters & Gullwings Galore! '. This is the first part
@@mrdainaseThank you 🙏
Atten to detail is great !
Is a hammer not enough
One thing leads to another …
I can’t seem to find Part 1 ………. Innit.
It’s there. Mercedes 190sl resto part 1. It has a pic of a red 300sl. Regards.
Coulda cleaned up before fitting new rubbers and gasket
Cheers Gary, dick head, Lol.🙂 so funny say exactly the same thing. But if I'm wild then the f word slips in. So true vehicle for any length of time, there's so much to do to get them back to road worthiness. Looking forward to seeing the next installment. Cheers mate. Kiwi Ken 😊
I wanted to view the content of this video. However the quirky background music was just too much. What a shame! What a great car...
Just a bit of fun David. And it’s free so don’t take it too seriously!! Regards.
I admire your work - it’s craftsmanship and competency rarely seen nowadays, but for fucks sake your choice of music for this video was gawd awful 😅
“NOTHINK “ ??? Surely you mean nothing . I would have thought as an actor you’d have known that !
