Weird asf thing to have a reveal about bro lol ngl
He's either 19 or 32 years old
That “scrapey” sound is how all metal producers tell the bands to play chugs in the studio, it makes the attack more punchy
Yes I too like the pick attack to have a sound. Its like the spacer between the notes.
I just ended up doing it naturally and I feel alot of other people who play metal especially after learning pinch harmonics and tougher down picking have had the same experience, I recommend it to all Chuggers!
Chug is life
I love the “scrape” sound. 🤷♂️. 🤘🤘🤘🤘
@@ohvizn6119 Real
the scrapey sound is metal af tho
On bass it sounds absolutely amazing too!
Everyone has told me that that is a thing I should get rid of.
@@tktspeed1433 Grrr but I guess there could be too much too. Some is good though.
It is if you can control it. What he’s trying to say is that it’s harder for beginners or someone that’s self taught and maybe doesn’t have their style or skill set down. Guitar is weird because almost everyone has a bad habit or something they do that’s technically wrong… but that’s also something that can make you different and set you apart. I mean Jimi Hendrix playing a left handed guitar right handed?! Just try holding your guitar that way and try playing anything… weird right? But that’s also the only way he can play. I could be wrong, but seriously doubt he could play right handed guitar. But learning the fundamentals in the beginning definitely helps with correcting bad habits. I always drop the pick (1 year playing) and I hold the pick the first way… trying to use the second way in the video but I always default back to the first way for some reason?? Driving me nutz
Its almost like there's really no right or wrong way to play - only preference
Me holding the pick with a thumb and two fingers pointing downwards for the last 6 years
Bro got the papa hetfield position
Papa Het's pencil grip is so much more stable for me when playing downpick-heavy songs.
Bro I was doing the same for last 3 years too
Bro you've possibly held yourself back on years worth of progress just from the way you held your pick 😂
@@yak_frost1196 is it really that bad?
I never knew what was the best way to hold it but I have always held it the metal way and i play death metal so i guess I've been doing it right
Me rotating the pick 120° so I hit the strings with a rounded edge
I do that to chug a lot of the time 😂
always thought I was an odd one for doing that! Glad to see this
My man 🤝
I do this for strumming chords for some reason
Sometimes it happens when the pick slides out of my grip and I like it 😂
Ive been waiting for this video to be made for a long time, man, that I stopped looking for it years ago. You don't understand, dude.
Thank you, finally.
James hetfield: am I a joke to you
Second method all the way🤘
I had no idea Christian Bale was so passionate about pick etiquette.
HAHAHAHAHAHAH
And here I am with a perpetual crack nail on my index finger just so I always have a pick at the ready 💀
True guitarist
This just changed so much in the span of 5 minutes. Thank you!
I never considered how much the pick is showing when I encountered picking problems and assumed it was due to the type of movement I used.
When I used the minimum area possible it felt way comfier and I somehow got more speed with it.
I also use the first method but with the minimum area showing. Found it more comfortable than the second method.
Thank you!
Are you able to chug good like that ? Like triplet chuggs on 2-3 strings at once
I actually learn a lot from you because you make information easy to understand are descriptive and make it hilarious so the info sticks! Thanks for the lesson's!
I've been doing this by accident all along
Thank you brother…..now I know how to actually use my FOOKIN pick
I love the pronunciation of "fookin" in the beginning. Not that I've never heard it this way but this one specifically is just perfect
I've learned how to play with no pick, just holding my fingers as if I'm holding a pick and using my pointer finger as the pick, I think doing that gives better clarity when you actually use a pick
Play for a few 8hr days your fingernail gets pretty sore and scraped off. Takes forever to heal back. It's good to know so you aren't the guy that wrecks a song if you drop your pick, but if you don't want a pick grow the thumb callous
@@SvMobyduck when i commented this i actually barely had ay experience using picks, bought a pack of picks about a month ago and realized its a lot harder to use a pick then i thought, atleast for technical playing
bro what?? i was always holding the pick the first way. ever since i first started learning. i decided to try it the other way and it instantly feels so much better. it also helps me not constantly rest my hand on the bridge. in my 5 years of playing this has been the best tip i've learned.
why not hold your hand on the bridge
Thanks, man. 👍
Great tip, thanks man! I’m self taught and have been in a slump for months but I’m changing my form to get better results. This is the next thing I’m trying!
Gave up on picks in about 1986, I kept dropping them mid song so I grew my own! The longer my nails are, the more speed I have.
Wait a second… I just saw your comments on that weird bird flapping synchronized to camera video that popped up in my recommended! That’s crazy!
Me holding it with three fingers:🗿🗿🗿
That was fookin helpful, thank u
Thanks for your FOOKIN help!
I do the James hetfield three finger hold thing
Now it make sense😮
I'll just stick to cigarettes, thanks.
I used to do the first way, played like that for about 20 years. I discovered the second method a year ago and I’ve never looked back… i don’t know how I went this long without discovering that way but when I did it’s like I was able to finally play like I’ve been playing for as long as I have. Something about the first method just held me back I guess. I also can attribute it all to finally broadening my scope of styles, and really learning how to play. Not just looking at tabs and doing a horrible job of covering songs I liked
The first one looks very uncomfortable to play with
Instructions unclear, I'm missing 3 fingers.
this really do be a bruh moment
As you grow in your guitar journey you'll learn that there are many many different ways to hold your pick and none of them are "wrong". I, for example, used a penny for many years. Now i mostly use my fingers, but when i do use a pick i use the rounded back of the pick. Ive learned to do this without the "scrapy" but ive also learned ways of using the scrapy sound to good utility. The scrape can be very useful in chuggy metal sounds for instance. It also helps add pick harmonics to the tone of otherwise regularly picked notes. The amount of charm you can add to your tone simply by developing different approaches to picking opens a whole new toolbox to explore.
Shotty like ah melody
I always used the first method and thought it was wrong so i forced myself to use the second. Now i see this video and it makes me wanna go back to my old ways
You either hold the pick right or you're on cigarettes!
It worked for me 🎉🎉
Thanks Brandon I was just thinking about this yesterday
"how to hold the fookin pick"- Brandon, writing a guitar tutorial
“Scrapey Annoying Sound” FTW!
The Downstrokes Boy : using 3 fingers to hold pick
Nothing beats the attack of a jazz pick
I'm a Metalhead and I've been playing keyboard for 15 years and electric guitar for 5 years. I'm still beginner on electric guitar, but I made a few good songs.
I really appreciate this fookin tutorial
Love the fookin pick saying 😂
And then there's Marty
Les Go! I know howda Hold tha fookin pick now!💀
Amazing you cracked the code ❤❤thanks
Very helpful thx
Thank you! Now i know how to hold the pick better
I like the scrappy sound
Thank you so muchchh!!!😭😭😭
Thumb, index and middle fingers. Maximum control. Maximum tone options. You can loosen up and let it get floppy without losing it. You can tighten grip and it gets rigid. Use a big pick, like those one inch triangular monsters (I don't know how you kids use those tear-drop shaped, finger-nail sized little picks) and you can squeeze the thumb between the two fingers and bend the pick making it super rigid. These all create different attacks and either damp or accentuate harmonics. Also for tapping, you can just pull off your index finger and tap while the thumb and middle hold the pick. FURTHERMORE you can also PICK harmonics quickly by pulling the index off the pick and damping the node with the index (instead of tapping it) while the thumb and middle pick the string. Through changing pick attack and moving where you hit the string you can create a mild slow phase-shifter sound USING YOUR HANDS. That's right, I'm pulling out the "tone is in the hands" arguement. You CAN get different tones by HOW and WHERE you attack. BTW while I am ranting, those volume and tone knobs don't always need to be always set to 10.
As a person who uses jazz 3s idk how u guys use those big picks haha
A combination of different techniques for different situations is ideal imo
Nice and simple
Damn it Brandon you are slicker than owl shit . So much awesome advice. Thank you very much
I usually just let the pick hold me and its been working absolute wonders
That profile pic is classy. Has that vintage Myspace-chic vibe going for it.
fookin ell
Thanks mr angry😃😃👍👍👍👍👍
The second method actually gives you more control over the dynamics though. I landed on that method after trying to adapt my knowledge of tone and dynamic control when finger picking a classical guitar
i just hold the pick in a way where i’m not scraping my fingers on the strings while trying to strum the guitar
I think everyone does and should hold their pick differently. No right or wrong. Find what works for YOU
I am for sure the second type here though I have major knuckle damage from squeezing too hard. Ive learned to loosen up. And use the middle finger to hold the pick also, my index needs the support
Turns out I use both. The second method is good for pinch harmonics and the first is better for strumming. Choked up, that took me a while to learn on my own w/ a little help.
I didn’t realize until now but I subconsciously switch between the two while I’m playing lol
I instinctively hold it the second way
Bro looks like he suddenly grew up while he’s in his toddler clothes
2nd method plus other fingers makes the best hybrid technique!
I hold wit 3 fingers my dude
Thz,I am gonna try that
i thought the whole pick was supposed to be out and i’ve taught myself to hold it wrong 💀, this explains why i always hit the wrong strings
A guitar teacher who ain't too old for a good hiding! 😂
PERPENDICULAR NOT PARALLEL 😭🎶🎶🎶😖🥲
The second method is what I mainly do but I agree it is not as accurate as the first one. I had never heard / seen that first method taught directly. I hope you do a longer video on that first one.
Jazz III’s the only way to go!
I use three fingers
I've been holding the pick in the metal fashion? Nice
That was fookin unclear!
As a metal player, correct, it's faster, and often in metal that scraping noise is actually desired in the tonality, and can add to the aggression, it can also be a detriment at times, so when I need it to be cleaner sounding, I can change to a different grip. That said clearly from the above I'm in the camp of usually holding it the second method.
Me: *hears* how to hold the fookin- *subscribes*
I still keep fucking up
Is there anybody that doesn't use the red jazz pick anymore ? Geesh. Nice playing btw
I just hold my with a fist. Like ✊
I Alternate between these while i’m playing
Thanks a lot. But I realized that my grip (with the first method, pr something cöose to it) makes my kndex finger hitting the string befote playing it with the pick. I even sometimes see a small irritation at the base of my index finger nail when I play for a longer time, mainly because my index touches the strings first when I play a downstrokes, and for strumming (which is not a problem for strummimg I guess). I‘ve noticee that when playing arpeggio this problem really makes me missing string! Is there anyway to fix this, wirthout losing control and a good feeling of the pick (because although this happens I feel pretty comfortable with my pick grip)? Should I let more of the picj sticking out or less angles while playing ? Thanks a lot fir your help, anyone !
I have literally never seen that first method in my entire life
Jimi Hendrix played like this
I've done the second method since I started guitar maybe that's why I gravitated towards metal
don’t forget to grimace while you pick
Metal style
I WANT THE SCRAPE GOJIRA FOREVER
I keep knocking it out of my hand 😅
I've been struggling with AC/DC's thunderstruck riff, you think i should use the second picking method for that song?
why do I hold the pick with my thumb and middle finger
My beautiful friend, you don’t seem PISSED OFF, still very handsome 💖
How to hold a fookin pick. What i heard: how to hold the FUCKIN pick
I’ve been having half the fookin pick sticking out this whole time 💀
And thats why I use fingerpicking
I hold it like the italian hand thing.
I use my index, thumb, and middle finger and hold it weird, but it feels more natural and comfortable
Great.. for strumming what is a good pick holding style.
Me whose fingers can't do the first position without angling my thumb diagonally.
