@@anarche4900 Just a few days ago I was watching some YT videos about best/worst games of 2023 and DSR was mentioned and the UA-camr said that sadly we won't get the remakes of the other 2 cause EA deemed DSR to be financially unsuccessful. I'll try to find the clip and link it in a follow up comment.
So, I was one of American McGee's Patrons while he was working on Asylum, meaning I got early access to all the art and story developments, and here's my take on why EA made this decision. To my knowledge, EA actually approached American first, basically telling him that they'll give him the Alice IP if he could prove to them that he was capable of actually getting a game made. So, for six years, American and his team worked on the Alice Asylum design bible and presented it to EA. I suspect that either EA had a regime change during the pre production of Asylum or, upon reading the design bible, EA execs realized that the Alice IP could be very profitable in the future and decided to hold onto it.
Do you think some of it might have been because it felt like an ending…..in the end she defeats the true last human monster in her life and basically destroys the true evil in wonderland forever
I love this series so so damn much and I HATE EA for turning down the third game and the only way I’ll ever buy a game from them again is if they port Alice madness returns to switch
Or just port both games to Steam and Playstations and Xbox platforms. Not sure if Nintendo would be okay with letting a game that has an enemy literally called "Bitch Baby" on their platform, but I probably wouldn't hold my breath on it.
@@thedarkestnightmare616 they’re pretty cool with things now as long as it gets a proper esrb rating it’s what ever lately they even have less censorship restrictions then PlayStation so I’m sure it’d be fine and I say bring it to EVERY platform if possible
I wish EA could’ve at least ported the first to games for Switch and other consoles that way more people can experience the games, but I guess they’re too stupid to do that.
Yeah, it's frustrating that they couldn't just port Alice 1 for smartphone. The game is so old, that it could run easily on phones, and it's not like they have to make the game from scratch.
My favorite video games series of all time, EA saying no to Asylum still hurts! I will never understand the sheer stupidity EA showed rejecting another Alice.
I didn't know about Otherlands, neat! So sad Asylum is cancelled, we desperately need it (and nice that you didn't spoil the story for Madness returns)
Every chapter was supposed to have a bossfigt in the end, and all but the Dollmaker got cut for time reasons. Ch. 1 is probably the most well-known, the March Hare x Dormouse mech that we see falling apart in the cutscene was supposed to have a full-on boss battle, on an arena surrounded by lava, having to dodge the mech' attacks and occasionally firing on its weak center point. Chapter 2 had the Mersquid (found in the menu under "characters"), which we don't really know much. It supposed to appear multiple times in the graveyard area and the crypst, stalking Alice with its chains hanging behind her, following silently. The fight was originally in place of the Colossal Ruin Chapter 3 had the Samurai wasp queen in the end, at the hive section of the level. It controlled all wasps around, ruling over them and occasionally eating them too. She also has one image ingame under the characters menu. Chapter 4's boss was the executioner. Originally, there was a wole fight planned to take place in the center of the labyrinth, and the cake only appearing after he's defeated. And Chapter 5 should've had the Doll Boy, a bigger, stronger, faster and more dangerous variant of the Dollgirl enemies you find in the level. Its model is also in the characters menu. It was supposed to appear in place of the last Colossal Ruin in the end of the level.
The reason why the second game doesn't have boss fights is because they didn't have enough time or money. Also after you use the hobby horse and switch to the vorpal blade you can do like a double slash combo that does extra damage.
I was really expecting Alice Asylum which is supposed to be the third game in the series to happen. Sadly, EA cancelled that according to American McGee. He made a video on his channel on youtube talking about it and basically moved on from the project. I think that he's still open to making this third game happen but that is if EA will stop being cold hearted fools about it. They could care less about this franchise but I'm glad that fans still care about it. That's why I like watching videos like this one still talk about the two Alice games that we got.
Unfortunately EA happened and killed a really unique series and take on Lewis Carol’s character and world. Part of me is holding out hope that with the success of the Dead Space Remake (and seeing how successful Capcom has been with Resi lately) EA might see that there is a market for 3rd person action horror
I love both Alice games! It was heartbreaking to hear that Asylum won't be happening :( These games remind me of LoZ and I didn't play them until I got older. I was super into LBP2 at the time of amr's release since I was too young to play those games.
As previously said in the comments, they don’t have boss fights bc they didn’t have time. From a lore perspective, I look at it like: Alice doesn’t have boss fights, bc it’s all taking place in her mind. She escapes to wonderland whenever she feels threatened in the real world. It’s a safe space for her, one that is crumbling due to her damaged psyche. It makes sense that there are no boss fights as it’s almost like she’s delaying her demons. She’s not thinking about them but in the final fight she faces her inner demons in the form of this massive, grotesque and disturbing doll maker who she does overcome. But I mean that’s just my take on it :]
I can feel you in Alice Madness Returns' lack of boss fight. During the hatter sequence when that giant robot came, I thought I was gonna fight it just for to robot to be destroyed by a teacup from nowhere. There is one combo though for the Hobby Horse - Hobby Horse > Vorpal Blade > Vorpal Blade; she does a different animation.
I hope this series continues to come up again and again. I loved it, truly it made me fall in love with gothic art as a kid so much so I later (and still) get it tattooed on my body. My heart breaks for American but I’m glad people are finally finding this masterpiece
i'm so disappointed ... really ... this game is just a masterclass and with all the elements show here it could totally break the screen !! BUT NO. EA pissed up once again for literary NO REASON ... I really really want to see a return to form for Alice, the original game's atmosphere and music just has this charm and horror factor that I felt was missing in the second game. Like you mentioned, something about the world in the first game wants to make you explore it more.
People always say its disappointing how egdy this game can be but its oddly realistic i first played the game when i was 16 and didn't really understand the story and again at 17 ( i was assaulted by two older boys) and i still never saw it for what it was. I knew something bad was happening but i never knew what it was until years after the fact. Alice is realistic like that in fact i don't think I've ever had a piece of media do so... right i suppose. It can take alot to wake you up from your bubble and into reality. Madness returns is a perfect and accurate depiction of SA.
If i were EA i would hold on to the Alice series for juuust until it's become relatively forgotten and then release a remastered trilogy including asylum
It's so frustrating that Alice 2 keeps getting discounted on Steam for under $2 but getting the first game to work through archieves is just confusing.
Call me mean to even say this but I understand why EA didn't want a 3rd (maybe final) Alice game, because Madness Returns didn't sell that much. Yes the game had more videos and played more years later but it didn'tt had that big of a change the only videos I found of Alice don't go higher the 1 Millions views. But even after that I'm stll mad thatEA didn't let the franchise have the final bow.
Definitely thought Madness Returns had pacing issues. Compare it to, say, Psychonauts 1 where, even if the main storyline slows down, each mind offers a pretty satisfying mini-arc. While in Madness Returns you don't really get any narrative "satisfaction" until you meet the Red Queen. The lack of boss fights certainly doesn't help the matters. In Psychonauts, they were usually the climax of each mind. In MR, you just move on to the next level without accomplishing much in the grand scheme of things. Psychonauts also handled the real world better. A bunch of memorable NPCs, some exploration, etc. The real world in MR is a couple of ultra-linear walking simulator segments. Quite a letdown.
