Still one of my favourite film scores of all time. Gustavo's music combined with Ang Lee's gorgeous direction was magical.

Soundtrack can also refer to the entirety of the music in the film, encompassing score and songs that were either licensed or written for the film. The song A Love That Will Never Grow Old was not eligible for Academy Award consideration owing to its insufficient air time in the movie.

Such a well deserved Oscar! Brokeback Mountain should have seriously won Best Picture. The movie had such a diverse crew and cast when you think about it: Asian director and writers, Latino music composers, North American and Australian actors all working together to bring life to a powerful and enigmatic love story about two men. I suppose it was all to progressive for the Academy to handle in 2006...
I completely agree with you "Brokeback Mountain" should have won the Oscar for Best Picture as a gay man it is one of my favourite movies it's sad that when it was released it was dubbed "The Gay Cowboy Movie" it is so much more than that I like to think of it as a classic American love story it just happens to be about two men and not a man and a woman.
I think it was too much of political overkill that year - perhaps they cancelled each other out. You had other films like Syriana, The Constant Gardener, Capote, Munich, Crash, V for Vendetta, and Transamerica, to name a few.
i agree with that minority wins would be nice. but this is supposed to be art and has nothing to do with race.
brokeback mountain i cant even remember one melody from that movie, while memoirs of a geisha is a masterpiece, and john williams the legend got nominated twice that night.
pride and prejudice score is the most amazing and unique out of all period movies. you have to look at their face, they are not happy that brokeback mountain won, usually if its worth it, the other nominee would give smile as a nod, they deserved it
Opaque z I agree with you but it’s subjective. Brokeback mountain had some great melodies in my opinion that resonate through the film and fits the landscape of rural rocky America perfectly.
Why does a piece of art have to have a specific quantity of one race or another for it to have been considered successful as art? It’s a powerful story but it was that way because the most talented people collaborated on it, not the whitest, blackest or brownest people and their nationalities didn’t have a direct effect on the end product.

Amazing win. Hopefully this isn't a prize for 'more music', but for the best use of music in a film, in a way that enhances and confirms its narrative and messages. By this, the subtlety of Santaolalla's score, silence-based and contemplative, precisely placed, has no comparatives.

Nobody else composes such touching and emotional movie soundtracks. And even though, he's much less popular than morricone, williams, rota etc. If you dont know yet, also check out his soundtracks for 'the motorcycle diaries', 'Babel' and ' The Last of Us'.

Any other year Memoirs would have won cause it is an incredibly beautiful score, one my favorite scores from John. But Brokeback Mountain deserved this win, such a beautiful story and an absolutely gorgeous score, that couldn't have fit more perfectly

Shannon Curry. Thanks for letting me know. I’ve stopped watching the Oscar since the committee robbed Brokeback Mountain for best picture award. To me it was unfair even the whole Crush team was surprised to won that night.

Indiana Jones and the temple of doom and the river in 1984. Lost to Maurice jarre for a passage to India.
Empire of the sun and the witches of eastwick in 1987. Don't remember who won.
Indiana Jones and the last crusade and born on the fourth of July in 1989. Lost to Alan menken for the little mermaid.
Harry Potter and the philosophers stone and AI Artificial intelligence in 2001. Lost to howard shore for the lord of the rings: The fellowship of the ring.
Memoirs of a Geisha and Munich in 2005. Lost to Gustavo santaolalla for brokeback mountain.
War horse and the adventures of Tintin the secret of the unicorn in 2011. Lost to Ludovic Bource for the artist.
While most of the double nominations were good, star wars and memoirs were his best among these. While he won for star wars he was robbed for memoirs. It would have been his sixth deserved win.
King Kong, Narnia ( and maybe War of the Worlds) deserved a nomination

The best score of 2005 was King Kong, but not even was nominated. Even Narnia has better score than many of that films, but neither was nominated. Sometimes the academy take ridiculous decisions.

Brokeback Mountain is an good film with a great soundtrack.
But that said, I think John Williams should have definitely won either for Memoirs of a Geisha, Revenge of the Sith or even Munich.
Anyways, it was still a very good soundtrack. An what a year, King Kong, Narnia and Batman Begins could have also been nominated.
I must say, James Newton Howard should have been nominated for King Kong.

Listen to the Order 66 theme, or Obi Wan visits Padme (That's the name of the piece 😁) that are both original from Episode lll.

Some more titles: Grievous theme, Battle of the heroes, Anakin's dark deeds, Mustafar theme, Padme's remunitions, Anakin and Palpatine in the opera, Battle over Coruscant, Heroes collide, The boys continue, Padme's funeral, The immolation theme, Jedi temple march, Anakin vs Dooku, Anakin lands the cruiser.

@Diego Pisfil maybe. But we are talking about original score. Memoirs of a Geisha and Pride & Prejudice are the most complex and rich soundtracks of the nominees. King Kong, one of the best scores that year by James Newton Howard, wasn't even nominated. I think Santaolalla winning here was a mistake, his music was too simple (and I love Brokeback Mountain)
@Diego Pisfil And? The award is named Best Original Score, not Movie That Will Be The Most Remembered or Pretty Score in the Best Movie. I think this was a bad choice and the academy members voted for their favourite movie and not paying attention to the score.

Gustavo Santaolalla is one of the worst composers of this century. His win the following year for Babel is even more infuriating, considering that there's barely any score, and what score there is was written by Ryuichi Sakamoto!
