He deserved it strictly for the fact that all the other nominees were similar in a way. All were fantastic don't get me wrong, but the score for babel was fresh and different. It stuck with you after the movie especially that end credit song. That's why I think it one. But let's be honest they were all fantastic.
I agree. Santaolalla stands out for his uniqueness but all the nominees were deserving. The lullaby of Pan's is perfect for the mood of the film and the score for Notes of a Scandal is still fresh in my mind and I haven't seen the film in ages.
I don't know how you can say that the scores for Pan's Labyrinth, The Queen and Notes on a Scandal sound similar. Babel is easily one of the worst wins in this category, and this is coming from someone who loved his Brokeback Mountain score. The film literally plays the same few notes throughout the whole film and some of the best music in the film wasn't even composed by him!
dominik dedaj that end credits song (which I love btw) was not written by him. It was written by the much better Ryuichi Sakamoto (The Revenant, The Last Emperor).

Great artist started off with the rock en español movement doing everything from playing in a band to being a producer. Then turned to the movie business and won back to back oscars. Now he’s doing video games and even appearing in them. You are crushing it Gustavo!!

The most beautiful and powerful piece of music from Babel is a track called 'Iguazo' (which Gustavo is actually playing when he is announced) and was written years before the movie was made and therefore should not be considered part of the 'original' score. It is no doubt still a beautiful score, but I wonder how much influence that piece of music (used in the movie to such great effect during the incredible helicopter scene) had on this decision. 🙏🏽
The end credit song is one i always come back to somehow. It just stuck out and hit me at the moment it came on and wouldn't let go long after.

Volver for Penelope Cruz who that year was nominated for best actress on the movie Volver and "ine" of course, for Hugh Jackman ( the year before X-Men 3 had been released.

................ Pan's labyrinth is one of the greatest and most beautiful and emotional scores ever written. I won't give a single additional commentary, Oscars are mediocre anyway; you can't expect popular masses events to know what true beauty and epicity is, let alone award it precisely.

N O, el laberinto del fauno has like 1 melody and it ain't that original
Yes, he is good, but the best track on Babel was by a Japanese artist, and not him! ( section where the tormented Japanese girl is on the balcony after trying to seduce the detective) . Pans Labyrinth soundtrack was awesome and should have won this. Perhaps it was that Babel was so much more successful than Pans Labyrinth. Both films are very good, Pans Labyrinth better in my opinion. Apart from a couple of standout tracks on Babel, the rest was was not that good.
Best track on Babel is Iguazú.
babel had barely any music to be enjoyed...this is what you call a breadcrumbs score...but it was nice nevertheless....i think they choose the winners based on the quality not how many previous wins he had
