  • PNSO has given us some nice non-dinosaur offerings, and this time they are giving us another - the tylosaurine mosasurid Tylosaurus!
    An interesting mosasaur defined by it extended rostrum, Tylosaurus is dressed with very fine detail and a very beautiful and naturalistic colour, making this mosasaur one worth considering for any lover of marine reptiles. With enough to set it apart from the Mosaurus as a distinct member of the mosasaurids, PNSO continues to flesh out our own little museum of incredible prehistoric models.

    Finally, a PNSO model with soft tissue around its teeth! Alone the fact of it having lips makes the Tylosaurus figurine look so much more organic and natural than its predecessors (like the Mosasaurus).

    • @ianpanico5501
      @ianpanico5501 2 роки тому +1

      Yup un agreed cause tylosaurus AND mosasaurus in general are related to monitor lizards and snakes. In other side like Trex they didint have lips for evidence shows in many many skulls

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  2 роки тому +2

      That is a good point, since both mosasaurids are closely related, it begs the question of why both are lipped or lipless 😁 That's going to be a similar question to if ever PNSO releases a lipped T Rex. The ensuing debate and be-careful-what-you-wish for of having a T Rex that in a sense no longer goes with the other PNSO tyrannosaurids will be interesting!

      Actually the pnso mosasaurus has lips…

    • @laya8880
      @laya8880 2 роки тому +7

      It's funny that they would do it for an aquatic species which is much more likely to not have lips than any of their other models. I can get behind the artistic choice of a mosasaur or plesiosaur with exposed teeth (especially ones like elasmosaurus which appeared to have a teeth "basket"), but tyrannosaurus, allosaurus, carcharodontosaurus? Those are all terrestrial and very few if any terrestrial animals lack lips. I just wish companies weren't so afraid of hiding teeth in the classic "scary" dinosaurs. Marine reptiles don't have the same precedent and pressure of pop culture I guess.

    I think it's beautiful. What you haven't mentioned is the " Monitor Lizard" head. Which seems accurate for their Marine Reptiles. It's a beautiful piece. Your reviews are always great. Possibly the most informative we have. Thank you. X

      Thank you! Indeed there is a connection between mosasaurs and the varanid lizards of today. This really is a beautiful piece, more so in hand than I ever realised looking at the release images. It was nice enough to be sure, but when you have this thing with the fine scalation and subtle colouration, it's just something else altogether.

I currently don’t have any money right now but as soon as I do I’m getting it! Like everyone else I’m not a fan of the very noticeable line one the body and how it doesn’t line up but I think I could deal with that, I’m also not a fan of the hollow body, I think it would have been better to make it solid. At this point, I think this is the one to get first, because you want to get the best paint apps and the early runs are usually the best. I have to say that I strongly prefer the anatomy and skin design of this model over the Mosasaurus model. The anatomy looks more in line with what's currently supported, while the other model looks like it has more antiquated proportions. It's also much cheaper than the older model. :) I just bought a large mosasaur fossil, and bought this model to go alongside it for display!
    A year later and still no elasmosaur model. :( That would go great alongside my Zarafasaura fossil!

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  Рік тому +1

      Yes, the older Mosasaurus was really good in its own time, but PNSO has kept evolving and this Tylosaurus certainly shows it! I wonder if PNSO has deliberately not put out the most popular usual suspects because it planned to use other models are 'test subjects' to master their technique, for example the dromaeosaurids and of course the plesiosauroids. But something tells me one is coming very very soon! For example PNSO's IG is currently running a 100 days of facts to do with marine life, and I think that might be pre-empting something 🤞 I'm dying for an Elasmosaurus!

    Nice review!
    Little note, there is not really a specimen of a pliosaur over 10 m so far, all estimates in that direction are based on either very fragmentary inconclusive remains and/or a misunderstanding about pliosaur proportions until rather recently.
    Larger specimens probably were a thing but rather rare, similar to 7 m long saltwater crocodiles being a rare sight.

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  2 роки тому +2

      Thanks for your comment Joshua and honoured to have you here!
      I took my upper estimates from McHenry's 2009 disseration as 11m. I reasoned that 1.5m longer than the 9.5m this model is based on would have translated to an additional 4cm (1.6in) on the model. About 15% longer, but volumetrically substantial. However coming from you, I am now much consoled that this is an average specimen.
      By the way I love your content! You have a very good mix of different types of topics and I find I learn a lot even if I can't draw or animate to save my life. The same way Dr Witton's Handbook for Paleoartist's Handbook has taught me so much, learning how you artists think, analyze, and reconstruct adds greatly to my knowledge. Please continue to offer your valuable insight!

      I think that it will be quite rare to see larger sizes going foward, especially as PNSO becomes aware that cost is a major factor for many collectors. A larger animal means more paintwork, sculpting, and of course shipping, so it's a tricky balance!

But I dunno a Dimetrodon would be sick, edaphosaurus would be nice as well, I really want a Moschops some ancient amphibian like koolasuchus or some epic ancient crocodile like deinosuchus, purussaurus and/or sarcosuchus. Maybe I'm asking way too much hahaha

    Is it just me or the skull of tylosaurus look big compared to mosasaurus' skull?

    9.5 meters is reasonable for kronosaurus and is the most recent estimate for it's size. This is because Pliosaurs were found to have a much bigger head relative to the body then previously thought. The walking with dinosaurs liopleurodon really influenced this idea that pliosaurs were whale sized. That said kronosaurus is not a small animal and is still heavier than any mosasaur and T.rex.

      Thank you for your comment! The WWD Series while amazing unfortunately found the need to exaggerate sizes and weights with superlatives. Never so disappointed when I found out the truer size estimate of Leedsichthys. I took my upper estimate of about 11m from McHenry's 2009 disseration, but again if I remind myself that this is reasonable as an average for Kronosaurus then I'm much consoled.

    the weight is probably why it's so cheap. Better imo

      Well it does feel pretty hollow! So perhaps you could save on shipping because of that. But there is a tendency to equate with weight with quality and security so some people might find it off putting. As long as the seam is strong and you don't drop it, should be fine!

    The lack of an articulated jaw and that massive seamline are really off putting for me even though its a beautiful piece, also I just feel this looks cheap compared to the Mosa because of the skin texture

      @DinosDragons  2 роки тому

      It's really ironic though. Seems like there are two camps when it comes to articulated jaws. Skin texture wise, it really depends on what you prefer. For something more realistic, I think you might prefer this one. But does that seam really kill the illusion of near perfection for this model!

    As amazing as this figure is I personally would have prefered articulated jaw or closed mouth.. Lol even tho then the mouth details would be hidden.

      For hollow figures, there are always going to be seam lines due to how its construction. What I really hope for is for PNSO to improve its processes, because other models (also manufactured in China) have them a lot smoother and less obvious. With pressure from both Western and Chinese commentators, I am sure they're motivated to do this. They've always been good with acting on feedback in the past!
