267: Saurophaganax (Donald, 2023) Review

  • If ever there was a hierarchy of Morrison Formation top predators, Saurophaganax must sit on top.
    Larger than even Torvosaurus, let alone Allosaurus, this behemoth must have had very little to fear, even from other predators. With such a cool name to boot, Saurophaganax is a popular one with dinosaur enthusiasts, and here PNSO brings us its version.
    Replete with lips, this beautifully painted and sculpted model will easily stand out in any collection of dinosaurs as one to watch. The Lord of Lizard eaters reigns supreme in his kingdom, and his slow amble shows a top dog that does not need to hurry, but causes others to hurry instead.

    This really feels like a massive improvement over their Allosaurus. I'm long overdue for an updated Allosaurus in my collection, so I need to get this at some point (aside from the Cyberzoic Allosaurus I also plan to get, but that's a 1/18 scale action figure, and I treat those separately from my 1/35 static models).

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  8 місяців тому +2

      Articulated figures are nice but they can't reall replace static models for realism and beauty in my opinion. And if your collection is mainly 1:35 then you definitely want an important dinosaur like Allosaurus in that scale!
      This is really one of the most pleasing theropods I have from PNSO; in fact of all the theropods I do own! Delighted to see a _fragilis_ with those distinct features!

    • @Faelrin
      @Faelrin 8 місяців тому +1

      @@DinosDragons I imagine it is because of the seams added from the articulation correct? I know a lot of folks are not interested in them for that reason, despite the otherwise high level of sculpt detail, and decent anatomy (as far as BotM and the upcoming Cyberzoic ones go). Well that and the scale disparity.

      i agree,i also prefer static pose over jointed figures...saurophagnax is still rare in figure form and the collecta version was too small and not even that impressive,this version is far better and accurate as well... iv got the rebor version which is another interpretation ....

    New PNSO's best for me. Not only it has the great natural posture, accuracy we're used to, but this time the colour application, a "weakness" of this company has imploved a lot, along with the adition of well applied lips, it's a must have if you have the chance.

    • @DinosDragons

      Definitely agree that this is one of PNSO's best so far, bringing many thing together. Could you elaborate on the weakness of the colour application? PNSO has been doing amazing apps for a long time. It's just their colour palette is sorrowfully limited.

    Terrific….another reason I didn’t need to add another theropod to my collection. Actually, this is a very welcome figure. Saurophaganax has been a critter I’ve really been finding very interesting over the past couple of years. Hoping that more can be found to substantiate an animal other than fragilis. The work PNSO has put into this figure has moved it right to the front of the line of my favorites. I also appreciate your putting it together with other contemporary figures. It illuminates, I feel, a better sense of “place” as how the animals our collections represent encompass even a partial environmental biome long gone. I almost think, display-wise, I might have a preference for that kind of assemblage rather than lining up my theropods, sauropods, etc. A really very well done figure. And another great review. Probably place my order this week.

      Thank you for your very astute observation! Yes one request I received quite consistently was to do comparisons not just based on cladistics but also with contemporaries. I've started to do that if the video isn't too long, and in doing the comparisons I very much wish I had a huge mansion with immenses rooms to create dioramas of formations. Really felt great to see that "sense of place" as you call it!

    I’m personally unconvinced of Saurophaganax being a distinct genus, at least until more remains are described. That aside though, I haven’t been this exited for a PNSO release in a long time, it’s absolutely beautiful. They continue to prove why they’re the best in the business when it comes to accurate dinosaur models.

    • @dericplummer9272
      @dericplummer9272 8 місяців тому +8

      It seems the vertebra are also fairly distinct between it and Allosaurus. Are there other examples of animals within the same genus having that kind of distinction. Serious question.

    • @renna4216
      @renna4216 8 місяців тому +2

      I agree, the idea of Saurophaganax as it's own species is awesome, however there's not enough evidence to fully support that yet. It's more likely a subspecies of Allosaurus. Until we unearth/discover more, we won't know for sure. Same goes for Epanterias. At least with what we have/know currently.. This is a very stunning figure however and a cool/more surprising release from PNSO.

    • @paleoscinkus542
      @paleoscinkus542 8 місяців тому +4

      @@dericplummer9272 There are only two vertebral characteristics that are considered valid for Saurophaganax and are likely the result of having a larger body size, outside of that though all other remains are completely indistinguishable from Allosaurus. I don’t think it warrants being classified under a different genus. The best example I can think of is comparing a Lion to a Leopard, both are classified under the Panthera genus and live in the same region, but lions are much more heavily built.

      I _am_ rather confused by the decisions to split at certain cladistic branches, give how some very dissimilar looking animals today are separated only by species, even if they have morphologically distinct skeletal anatomy. Obvious example is the Pathera genus.
      Personally there are of course those annoying laminae, but I look forward to more fossil finds to confirm one way or other. That's one of the things that what makes paleontology exciting for me though... the ongoing debate and waiting for a new paper to be published!

    My god, this figure is gorgeous. As soon as I can afford it it will definitely be a must have for me. While the body sculpt and pose are incredible, where it really shines in my opinion is the head, the overall shape and crests imo looks much more like an allosaurus than pnso’s previous attempt, and the lips are a huge bonus! I’ve always been a proponent of lipped theropods, and while I wasn’t a fan of how they were executed on the yangchuano, the way they’re done on this sauro is exactly how I imagine theropods to look in my head!

      I have a pet lizard of my own, and the face honestly reminds me of him quite a bit! It looks peaceful, almost friendly, but at the same time there’s a very regal power behind them, you can tell this is an apex predator and not to be messed with.

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  8 місяців тому +1

      That's exactly the magic of PNSO. Zhao Chuang and his team are masterful sculptors of something that looks _real_ . Their research is rigorous with rather few slip ups. I wouldn't be surprised if they waited till they could really do lips confidently to put them on their models, and I also suspect that that's why they are taking their time with a 1:35 Spinosaurus and the eudromaeosaurs. I wish they would move on to something else though.

      You got that right! This one is I consider one of the most beautiful theropods I own! I've always suspected that PNSO was holding back the really obvious favourites like Spinosaurus and the eudromaeosaurs until they perfected a few things, the way they waited with the Cameron.
      At the very least, they've run out of the same old tyrannosaurids and carcharodontosaurids, so any other theropods should be more welcome, coming as they have to from the lesser done carnosaurs!

    Thanks for the great comparisons. Definitely a must have for my Morrison Formation Dino group (which is basically the ones you showed). Now like you mentioned, we need a new 1/35 scale Ceratosaurus! Right now I'm using the Safari Ltd 2012 figure, which is better in person than in pics.

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  8 місяців тому +2

      The unfortunate thing about that Ceratosaurus to me are the huge oversized feet, which hopefully PNSO if they keep to their track record will be able to correct and still ensure adequate balance. But PNSO is also notorious for warping with time especially in hot weather, so you'd still need the stand. That said, if they can do a 1:35 in the same colours as their earlier Ceratosaurus model, then I am definitely going to be very happy!
      Also yes comparing this model with the Morrison Formation ones because I received numerous requests to do comparisons not just based on phylogenetic but formation as well 😊

By turning out masses of the same clade, or even a major branch, they are all but guaranteeing that people who would have been excited to buy each new reveal now feel desensitized, and just wait around and cherry pick.
      By issuing a multitude of clade reps like they did before, each reveal becomes a surprise and more of a must have.

      Thanks for your kind words! I'm actually rushing to prep for a trip to Bali, but I had a quick look and from first impressions, the head looks a little too small. However this is based on BHI 3033, which does have a rather smaller looking head compared to the typical reconstructions you will see. If you like models based on specific specimens, I think it looks fine.
      For me, I don't have any special attachment to BHI 3033, and I prefer something that falls more in line with what I imagine a typical dinosaur to be 😁 Otherwise it does look good but I don't have time to do a careful scrutiny. Perhaps you could ask on one of the internet forums?

      Hopefully one day that will happen, I wonder if Pnso will recreate Ceratasaurus in 1/35th scale alongside this if Pnso does remake many of there lipless genera Pnso could base, there newer models. For example let’s say this remake is for an Allosaurus this newer figure could be based off Big AL 2 for A. jimmadseni. That would pretty amazing. The last thing, I find, personally interesting is when you see a typical S. maximumus reconstruction, I find quite odd because it’s almost always done in a way to make Saurophaganax look like nothing more then an oversized A. fragilis or A. jimmadseni. Which is understandable do too limited remains anyway the point, I’m trying to make is why isn’t S. maximumus reconstructed like other large theropods (I’ll explain) when you, me, and or anybody who really learns or studies theropod anatomy. Tends to notice nearly any theropod genera thats 9-10+ meters or more, there body proportions tend converge on these specific traits. Such as the following Larger skulls, shortened neck, more robust bodies, smaller arms, shortened yet robust legs. So instead of an oversized A. fragilis why not something more like another close relative like A. atokensis? Of course without the elongated neural spines and with a skull more akin to either A. fragilis or A. jimmadseni.

    PNSO is infamous for delivering obscure species, and here we go again. Even though I never liked Rebor Saurophaganax, seeing this PNSO Saurophaganax makes me believe that it is a valid species after all. PNSO can turn a chimera into a valid species with its gorgeous sculpting and painting. And we've witnessed that several times with species like Sinopliosaurus and Nanotyrannus. I always try to buy valid and scientifically accurate toys and figures. But if I ever get the chance to buy this, I won't think twice about buying this beauty. And I'm sure you, sir, know I love my dinosaurs dark, and look at the color scheme on this😍. But I'd love to see more colors on those horns. Since the name 'Donald' refers to a male, I wouldn't mind if it had a much more colorful face and horns (most of the male animals are vibrant and colorful). And I want PNSO to try another thing with their figures. I'd like to see more sharp teeth on their figures. I'm sure these figures are not for small kids, and blunt teeth make these valuable and gorgeous figures a bit more ugly. Just imagine if this figure had Rebor-like teeth but with these PNSO colors. It would be absolutely mind-blowing. I loved the review as always, my dear sir. You are the best, and I want to wish you nothing but the best. I am excited for the next video.❤

      Nice to hear from you always! I love the way you put it. PNSO can indeed "turn a chimera into a valid species". And even from sparse material like Sinopliosaurus and Zhuchengtyrannus. The way they focus on reality really sells their models.
      Good point about the horns. Really, ANY splash of colour _other_ than the browns would be seriously welcome! I just don't get it sometimes. It's almost like PNSO is trolling us and testing our loyalty 🤣
      Rebor really does the nicest teeth I have seen. It would be amazing to see at least better painted teeth on PNSO, which would really tip any model closer to the perfection mark. Alas, that's not what we've been having.

    • @MrRajithasandaruwan
      @MrRajithasandaruwan 8 місяців тому

      I think I should take my word back about 'Nanotyrannus'. With that new paper, I think Nanotyrannus is definitely a valid and unique species.
      It's okay if PNSO made Tyrannosaurus and Spinosaurus again. Because those two species are ever-evolving, and they are the most famous. But I'm sure us collectors don't want to buy the same figure twice. So I hope they will give us the full and final product from all these species.
      Agreed. At least better-painted teeth. I'm sure it's not that hard since they put all their efforts into creating these figures. So hopefully, they will take it into consideration.

    Mine arrived from Amazon. Beautiful critter!
    Mine's mouth doesn't close perfectly in the front, but not a big deal to me.
    The color: It's got me confused. The orange along the sides (which is so nice and subtle) saves it, but if it weren't for that It'd be really monotone and muddy! Almost like they didn't run a last dark color pass for some reason. When I place him next to his cousins, he looks like an albino, lol. The sculpt is so wonderful though, I think I'll get used to it.
    On side note: I'm running a little standing test.
    My Gorgosaurus and Yangchuanosaurus have stood on my coffee table without assistance since I got them, which has been at least a week for Yang and longer for Gorgo. Sauro has been standing on its own for a few days. Yes he's precarious, but he's so amazingly balanced I'm really curious to see if he eventually succumbs to gravity. The assumption is that PNSO likely had alot of their other non lipped theropods in the pipeline before the most recent paper came out so they fast tracked them. PNSO is continually evolving, and this probably has to do with the Cullen et al 2023 paper being a supporting piece of evidence that started to convince Zhao Chuang. (UA-cam keeps spewing errors. My comment keeps being evaporated while I was trying to
    correct some sentences. IDK why)
    In these days I was away from paleontology. Simply put, life happened. That's not really a
    fun and important part here so let's move on.
    One day, when I arrived home I saw a notice from UA-cam. A notice about your video.
    "PNSO Saurophaganax". I watched it and I ordered one. "Saurophaganax from PNSO? With
    proper Allosaurid thumb claws? With LIPS?! Dear lord(kinda funny considering I'm not a
    religious guy), I can't resist!"
    A week later, it has arrived. It is wonderful! About its colour(2:42), maybe it could be a
    difference in lightings. Mine looks same with one in the box art. If I put it under a lighting
    setup with warmer tone, it might look like yours in the video. About its lips(5:13) and jaw,
    unlike yours, lips of mine don't seal well in the front half. I don't mind because it forms a
    smirk face and I like it. XD On the other hand, the jaw is the stiffest among PNSO theropods
    that I have experienced. It will be loosen overtime, but it was quite a suprise.
    As an Allosauroid fan, this one is not only a pleasent suprise but also the most favorite one.
    As always, thank you for your great reviews.

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  8 місяців тому

      Thank you for your comment. I am happy to receive such experiences from viewers!
      Life always has a way of distracting and testing us, but what we always manage to return to shows what we value. I'm glad you found your way back to paleontology. This is a pretty niche interest so it's always nice to see people come back to this interest!
      Indeed, colour temperature makes a huge difference! In some light I can see the green, in others not so. I try to change the colour temperature sometimes to see if I can arrive at the same colour, but for this one I was not very successful. The important thing is what it looks like under your display conditions. I have this idea of a dream display cabinet one day when I have the $$$ which will feature 5500K lighting.
      I think if you are a fan of allosauroids, then this is one to get, even if you were to use it as an Allosaurus _fragilis_ . This one really is fantastic, and would have been 100% perfect if only PNSO were to use a different colour palette!
      It's good that you can take a positive view of your lips not sealing fully. You could try to hot hair dryer technique and see if that helps, but I think 100% lip seal is still something many companies will struggle with, simply because a dead toy doesn't have the same pliability as a pair of live animal lips!

    • @victorvanburen48
      @victorvanburen48 8 місяців тому

      @@DinosDragons About lips, there are two theropod models in my collection. One is being the good ol' Jurassic Park style Velociraptor from Papo and the another is new Saurophaganax. Being qurious, I compared their lips. The Saurophaganax shows a bit of gap in front half - about a milimeter at the tip. Papo Velociraptor, on the other hand, lips seals perfactly - considering it is over a decade old this is suprising. Strolling around among UA-cam videos, I see some of reviewers' Saurophaganaxes' lips don't seal, just like mine. I'll try the hot hair dryer after I loosen up its jaw hinge more. It's still a bit stiff. Thanks for your advise.
      PNSO's colour palette... we could say it's natural for animals, but I see it uses brown a lot. I agree with you in this part but I think this Saurophaganax's colour scheme is fantastic. When It is dark and warmer colour light condition it looks brown - blending in a forest at sunrise and sunset. But in bright and colder colour light condition, it looks more greener and blends in nicely in daytime forest. In terms of camouflage this would work well in wide range of sunlight conditions so I think this is why PNSO choose this paintings.
      On the other hand, I wanna see more vibrant colours from future PNSO models too. They used brown too much. Considering their Meraxes gigas it's obvious that they can do it more than anyone.
      + While I was loosening the jaw I applied a bit of pressure to lower jaw before closing it. The gap of lips is getting closer - now it is less than a half milimeter.
      + Second update: Praise our lord and savior, the hairdryer!

    Je vois que pnso a décidé d’aller du côté de la espéculation à la place de vrai donner scientifique car les lèvres ne sont pas scientifiquement précis puisque on n’ à aucune preuve directe actuelle donc leur dinosaures sont devenus presque précis mais pas précis a 100% maintenant plus il ne donne pas d’explications pour rajouter des lèvres alors qu’il en avait pour que les dinosaures theropode en n’ont pas que cela veut dire en réalité je pense qu’il veulent juste faire plaisir aux en puplic en réalité ce public qui croit que les dinosaures theropode avaient des lèvres charnue est surtout longue s'en explications convenable.
    MAIS c’est surtout une bonne vidéo

      Thank you for your comment.
      PNSO has always done what they believed to be scientifically accurate. As far as lips go, the preponderence of arguments seem to point that way. The Cullen et al 2023 paper was quite a strong supporting point for that argument. While we won't ever know for sure, palaeontology has always been about weighing arguments and then speculating one way or another depending on what the evidence seems to suggest.
      I like that PNSO and Zhao Chuang aren't emotionally tied to one argument or the other, and it is possible that the arguments finally swayed them to consider the possibility.
      I don't agree on the money making part, since they could have switched to this earlier than they did. Certainly, they could have given Cameron lips considering how wildly popular the concept is now and made a bunch of money. They probably had all their carcharodontosaurids and tyrannosaurids finalised and in production already, so it was too late to do anything about it.
      But who knows what will happen? Maybe their next theropod will suddenly have no lips again!
