I just miss September by about two weeks having been born. In mid-August. Peridot has not always been my favorite, but I'm slowly beginning to appreciate it. Have studied it for a little while now on my own, but still find the videos helpful.

Sapphire is my all time favorite stone. I’m at a point in my life where I can actually buy some so I’ve been looking at various rings and bracelets. I keep seeing different terms used to describe the stones and, being a lawyer, I have an appreciation for the power of words. That, and the wide range of prices for what look like very similar pieces, convinced me to seek some info on these blue beauties before I purchase. Thanks for such a wonderful video. I went from a 3 to an 8.

One more thing that everyone need to know about "Geuda" there are lot of heat treatments for Geuda in Sri Lanka. more than 50% of sapphire found in Geuda Stage. After heat treatment, it will be a nice and good quality stone. Whatever , Highly appreciated your effort for sharing knowledge with us.

Excellent video! This is going to be long because sapphire is my favorite gemstone. As you point out, they are hard and durable enough for daily wear. The color can be very saturated. I've seen blue sapphire that was better than tanzanite. I'm very fond of the Yogo Gulch (MT) sapphires. I've got a pair of rose gold and blue sapphire stud earrings from this source. These are a BRIGHT medium blue with this gorgeous violet secondary tone. From a distance they look like blue sparks. The refractive index of corundum is higher than chrysoberyl, garnet, spinel, tanzanite, peridot, tourmaline, topaz, aquamarine/emerald, and amethyst. You get really nice sparkle from this gemstone. AND the colors! Pink sapphire puts morganite to shame. Yellow sapphires, gorgeous set in white gold or platinum. Vibrant oranges too. The only color I don't like in sapphire is green which IMHO looks dull (for color can't compete with emerald, not even close). Lastly, if the price point scares you then lab created sapphires are both very affordable and completely convincing. My knowledge of gems has gotten pretty advanced because learning about them is a hobby of mine, so an 8.

I learned a 3-4. I Had already learned that rubies are actually sapphires. I was a bit disappointed when I first learned this because I had read that Ruby is the ‘King’ of gemstones, and it’s my birthstone. I’ve been looking for 7 years for a nice, clean, untreated ruby…🥹 There’s a Lot of junky gemstones out there in internet land, and Brick & Mortar Jewelers have such an egregious mark-up.
Oftentimes the sellers are not telling if it’s Lab/fissure/filled/heated/Oiled/ Or dyed. One Christmas season I had a Mall Jeweler fail to tell me the Ruby in the ring was a lab one (I can now spot most Lab sapphires + rubies) He gave me the ODDEST look (!) When I asked him, “Will this be the price on this ring with a MINED ruby?” 🧐 He kind of blanched white…😁

Back in 2005 when I was buying gems I bought several pieces of Labradorite, now I know there is the only one color I can find now for sale but in 05 they were selling yellow,red,and green Labradorite. Can you tell me what happened to those gemstones? Did they get renamed or did I get ripped off .. I’m glad to hear you learned. Generally speaking lab grown sapphire is the same harness as natural. There have been some disputes to this depending on the method used to “make” the sapphire, but being the same chemical composition and structure the hardness should be the same. I hope that helps!

Dear Andrew, you keep mentioning that gemstones 'grow'. How do I imagine that? I can only relate to that in planting a gem and then waiting a looooooooong time for it to grow larger? And does gemstones growing mean that they are sustainable? In the sense of: They get harvested and if they leave some behind, it'll start growing again?
And btw.. you forgot to mention the use of sapphire as needles for record players. I remember conversations about which needle delivers the best sound and causes the least damage to the records. I don't know if there is a huge difference to either between diamond and sapphire, but I bought always went for sapphire needles.

Why are some lab sapphires sold for around $80, whilst a lab sapphire of the same carat in other places is sold for around $500?
As far as I understand the method of "making" the gem matters. Some methods take up just a couple of hours and they produce lower quality gems. On the contrary the more sophisticated methods may take up weeks. Also I suppose the cut matters as well.
Have you heard about the sapphires that her mind in Montana? They’re found at Philipsburg Montana. What do you think about those qualities? I have a three-quarter carat, yellow sapphire that was cut and faceted and it was found in Montana so I’m just wondering about it

I'm very keen to take another look at sapphire/ruby now, I actually like the lighter colours better, and they suit my complexion better. So I may be able to find a lighter coloured sapphire that I like but the stone will still have the durability to last as a ring...🤔

Are synthetic stones worth more the older they are? Example synthetic sapphires from the art decor era?
The stones themselves are not typically worth more for being an "older" created stone. A nice art deco piece can still have added value for its design and provenance in spite of having a synthetic stone. It would certainly be "more" valuable with a nice natural stone, but a piece in good original condition can still be valuable and desirable as a nice piece or vintage jewelry. I found a good unheated sapphire for a good price , how do I know they arent lying about it . It's an unheated 0.75 carat 14k gold ring with small diamond accent for 2100 Canadian.....
My first thought, is that without seeing the stone in person it’s hard to determine how good of a value or deal it really is. Because depending on the color and clarity and even cut the fact that it is unheated might not add that much value. The stone still needs to be overall attractive along with being untreated for it to really carry a solid premium. While many unheated nice quality sapphires will have a lab report to verify that, a lot of smaller stones won’t necessarily merit the added cost of getting a lab report. As a little bit of a sidenote, do you want to make sure that if it has a lab report that it is a real and reputable lab. There are plenty of fake lab reports out there.If it’s a new ring and you’re buying it, just make sure it is from a reputable jeweler or dealer. In this case I would expect the price to be fair. Meaning that the quality of the stone reflects the value you were paying. If you were buying it used, then maybe you are getting a good deal but I would certainly have questions about the authenticity of it being an untreated sapphire. If you are still not confident but you want to buy, you could ask to have a third-party graduate gemologist do an appraisal. You could also propose that you would send it into a lab and pay for the lab report assuming that it comes back as an untreated sapphire. The bottom line is that you want to deal with someone who has a reputation that is in good standing. I hope that helps.

Sarah Sophia I think you were on the right track. I didn’t see the specific ring I think you were looking at, but I did look at some of the things they were selling. My guess, from looking at it, would be that you’re more likely paying a fair price for whatever quality sapphire it is. Untreated and unheated sapphires are more about valuable next to a similar quality stone, but it won’t necessarily mean that the price is exponentially more unless the sapphire Size and quality is very rare. If the sapphire is more green or less saturated or just very dark any of those would explain a lower price point.
Sarah Sophia One more thing that might help you is understanding the quality of the ring and how that also can affect the price greatly. A lot of jewelers on Etsy, in particular, are not necessarily concerned about the highest quality ring and stone setting, they are more focused on price. It’s not to say that it’s bad, but there are a lot of ways to cut corners on rings that save on cost but might sacrifice on different areas of quality. It may not be a consideration if this is just meant to be a casual ring, but if it’s something you want to wear every day it should be part of the thought process when buying. Again, I hope it helps.

Is it even remotely possible to have a color change sapphire that you mistake for an alexandrite how different are the two stones as far as color change or even hardness or the way they are tested
There can be overlap in this category. More commonly lab grown in both varieties has become the more common concern. There are some typical colors, but if you have a quality natural specimen of either you should be buying from a reputable source. Sapphire will be harder, but you may not notice very quickly, both being pretty hard stones. Most good jewelers will be able to tell the difference 99% of the time. With that said, quality Alexandrite will be WAY more valuable than sapphire.
@@YourAverageJeweler As you may or may not remember I have a presidium gem indicator this test colored gemstones I don’t know for sure but the one that I have tests as sapphire I believe it is purple and then it changes to green or vice versa. It is smaller I would say maybe up to third maybe half carat not sure if that size is man made more often or not

World best blue sapphires have come from Ceylon not Kashmir
I suppose that is an opinion some hold. While many do love Ceylon and it is likely the best source we have right now, most still feel that what we found in Kashmir represented what most people want from a Sapphire. Ceylon Sapphire are beautiful, and location is really only secondary to the stone itself. Thank you for sharing.
