    No this was not confusing - It explained it to the point that I never knew this difference and just have been using Pro and didn't know about labs requiring a lower color setting. That may help me out in the future if sending to lab!!!! Thanks!!!!

      You can work in the wider space (e.g. Prophoto) and then do the conversion to sRGB when you Export to a jpg file. This way you keep the wider color range in your Photoshop file in case you want it in the future (for example, for printing to your own printer).

    Excellent explanation, Anthony. Thanks. Since you mention that you use a lab to print your photos, I'm gonna ask you a lab question: would you be willing to do a video about how to find a lab, or about the lab you use? Thanks!

    Important quibble: for any given bit depth (8-bit, 16-bit), all color profiles have the same NUMBER of colors. The RANGE of colors changes, but the quantity of available colors is the same.
    Think of them as a ladder. The red ladder in 8-bit (256 steps) sRGB color space, for example, might be 256 feet tall, with one step per foot. In ProPhotoRGB, that same 256-step red ladder might be 1000 feet tall. It has the same number of steps, but each step is further apart. That means they can cover a larger range, but they still have the same number of steps. (A 16-bit one will have 65536 steps. And each color [Red, Green, Blue] has their distinct 256 or 65K steps, but for simplicity the ladder analogy is surprisingly accurate.)

    Very Helpful, sorted the annoying messages, just need to sort out why my pictures give a dull pink background when shooting stills in a light box with a white background! :(

    Anthony I have a question regarding Catalogues in LR. Some people use multiple catalogues and some use only one. Personally I only have one with approximately 70000 photos. Is there a video you can refer me to, to better understand this?

    If there's a possibility that your image will end up printed (digitally not litho) then presumably the Adobe RGB (1998) space rather than SRGB space would be best, wouldn't it? Then if you needed to save for web you would export as SRGB mindful of any colour mismatches but also of the variety of displays that will show it differently regardless.

    • @gbxgbxgbx
      @gbxgbxgbx 6 місяців тому

      Shortly because most displays only show sRGB gamut, and with print it varies a lot, and the gamut is bigger, so colors may be cut when printing sRGB compared to what could have been printed with bigger gamut.

    This is driving me crazy. Everything I open in Photoshop is off color.

    Sorry Anthony, but there's quite a bit of misleading/wrong information in this video. For example, all three RGB color spaces have the same number of colors in each (8/16 bit), not more or less than each other. And those "work spaces" are not "work spaces", they're color profiles that are assigned to the working space of Ps. Or as explained in the manual:
    >A working space profile acts as the source profile for newly created documents that use the associated color model. For example, if Adobe RGB (1998) is the current RGB working space profile, each new RGB document that you create will use colors within the Adobe RGB (1998) gamut. Working spaces also determine the appearance of colors in untagged documents.

    sRGB as a workspace? Sacrilege!
