      It depends on the design of your character, but a conservative estimate is about 4-6 yards of fur for a whole suit. I'm 5'3'' and i bought about 10 yards total for full suits for myself and my boyfriend (my character is 2 colours, his is 3). we've got plenty left over. a really good way to tell exactly how much you need would be to do the whole process in a very cheap fabric (sheets from goodwill work great!) and then figure out from there by laying the pieces out (be sure to mark fur direction) in a rectangular area measuring about 55''x36", which should give you a good estimate of the yardage you need, but make sure to leave extra in case of accidents like upsidown cuts, wonky fur, etc. we lost a good few inches of each colour because the lady at the fabric store refused to cut the fur correctly and sliced right into the fur fibres. i was SO MAD!

  • @movedchannels1329
    @movedchannels1329 5 років тому +55

    A method I want to try: (please tell me if there’s anything wrong with this)
    -Buy one of those “green screen” suits In the characters base color if available. Use black if not
    -Carve foam and place on front and sides of thighs, making it look like your legs are pushed back
    -Add some foam at the back of calves and a bit on ankle
    -fur the body, and if the character, say, has a yellow base but you had to use a black body suit, paint the body suit yellow before you fur it
    -add some foam to anywhere else you desire, such as butt, chest, shoulders, etc.
    That’s the method I want to try when I make my fursuit, any feedback?

    • @EMan-km3we
      @EMan-km3we 4 роки тому +17

      Idk if I’m too late or not, but that sounds like a really neat idea! I would probably use a painter suit or something instead though, because those green screen ones are usually spandex and will stretch :/

    If your oc is short fired would it be cheaper to get short fur or shave long fur?

      sometimes you can luck out and find super nice fur at your local fabric store. I got all of mine at my local Joanne's, or on their website. You'll need between 4 and 6 yards total for a full fursuit, depending on height/weight/character. there's also a ton of other great websites for fur (the person who commented before me named a few!)

    little tip to help the fur pile from getting caught in the seem is to use packing tape about 1 cm or so away from the seem to keep that fur all going the same direction. it also helps shedding when you store the fur ;) hope that helps.

    • @SkyehighStudios
      @SkyehighStudios  5 років тому

      Hey there! This is Skye's partner as she is currently around in Europe but I can answer that one.
      There are two ways (Probably more but i'm not the actual fursuit maker haha). The most common is making it separately as per the tail tutorial video also on this channel and fastening through a slit in the back of the body suit with a belt. That is what I have on my fursuit and you'll find it is what most fursuits have.
      The other way I know is to literally just sew it onto the suit just the same as binding and sewing the pattern together, of course you'd do that after. you have all the pattern sewn together. This is less preferable as it makes it harder to clean or at least more fiddly to use. I'd recommend just the belt loops, so check out that tutorial if you haven't! It should explain it better than I can!
      Hope that helps!
