I think the EHX reissue green russian is closer to the "civil war" muff version and you switched to the mode that copies the later black russian muff model on the muffuletta for the comparison.
Yeah, the EHX Reissue is based on the mid 90s version according to them. The JHS Civil War mode is based on 91-93 V7 and the Russian on the 99-09 V8. You may have a point there. Thanks for the comment.
BoJack Horseman Actually in JHS's muff comparison video Josh mentions that the Russian (star) setting on the Muffuletta is based on a bubble font Green Russian.
Brighter than the other two... the Triangle and Russian do some treble damping. You can hear it throughout, but listen to the quieter no-sustain comparisons for the best highlighting of it.
@@jimistheman9732 Agreed. I've been a fan of some Muff sounds but never felt it was right for my rig -- I'm more into punchier midrange tones, a la modern Green Day, but if I were to get a Muff for my board, it'd be the OpAmp for its brightness, clarity, and its lower price tag.
I still think that of all the newer Muffs, the Deluxe and the Tone Wicker blow them all out. The Deluxe is just so versatile and can sound like any of them. And the Tone Wicker has an enormous wall of fuzz with extremely complex mids and highs. The TW has the best note separation of all of em, and reminds me a lot of my fave Muff ever, the Skreddy Mayo.
I've tried to replicate the Op Amp with my Deluxe but to no avail - the Op Amp just has this unimitable grit and open aggression. I can't describe it really. I don't regret buying the Deluxe though - I can make it sound even like an electrified Cello into a Marshall or something, some really interesting sounds that the Op Amp would never create.
The Wick has 2 much hiss 🐍 imo (bonus for tone bypass tho, why don't they add that to all?). RUS output level is too weak for its tone. Glad u showed TRI having extra output! Best of these. I got a Fuzz War just for the output and tonal flexibility - it's like og muff w extra level and tone. I'd probably get a "deluxe" these days, w mid control etc.
i tried all of them live in sweetwater with a strat through a blues junior tweed and the russian blew me away. came in thinking triangle all the way too. all personal preference though of course!
@@samgoffenguitar Ah, so you agree. I'm glad. I just built the BYOC Ram's Head yesterday. I love it. But now I am very excited about buying the Triangle RE. Thanks again, Sam. You are terrific.
After playing with the Op-Amp and JHS Muffuletta more, the JHS does sound more like the Op-Amp when the tone switch is off on the Electro Harmonix, still doesn't quite get there for me though. Bear in mind though that the JHS pedal wasn't based on the Reissues, so it's not surprising they sound a little different. How do you think they compare?
GuitarPartho from JHS site: - THE PI - “1977-1978 V3” An instantly recognizable red Pi symbol gives this pedal its moniker. This is not to be confused with the later redesigned NYC version released in 2000. It features a more aggressive sound. Famous users: Frank Zappa, Billy Corgan But as I also say the muffuletta isn’t based on the reissue and there will be differences. I completely agree with your comment: they won’t sound the same and this is why I already pointed that out :)
The Op-Amp version is a loud brut, and it's my favorite one. I built one for myself using a different diode configuration that actually improves it if you can believe that. Great demo by the way.
The op amp version is not represented on the Muffulatta. The Muffuletta "Pi" setting is from the big box version from 78-79 and the new op amp Billy Corgan signiture version shown here Josh from JHS says is a way different circuit. Just saying that op amp version is kind of an odd ball here and never considered for the Muffuletta. I just bought the JHS pack rat with all the rat pedals so I am now researching Muffs pretty heavy. The Russian is my favorite and I am leaning towards just picking up the EHX russian even though i love what JHS does.
@@samgoffenguitar Hey Sam. I do build custom pedals to sell them. I am slowing down on it though these days, because musicians don't put a lot of value on custom pedals.
@@sprayscience I know what you mean. It takes something like TPS or some other massive UA-cam channel to promote new or custom builders. Take Reeves Electro for example.
the discrepancy between the green russian and the corresponding muffuletta mode can be explained considering that muffuletta replicates the BLACK russian muff, not the green, which has less kick. For a more adequate comparison, you should have played the Civil War Mode of the Muffuletta, which is more similar to the green russian. Great video tho, and very useful!
Hi, thx for the comments:) Yes, I go into what the muffuletta is based on in the written review on the website. You can find it here: www.samgoffenguitar.com/post/jhs-muffuletta
You capture well the awesomeness of the Triangle. I put an EQ after mine to remove some nasty highs but nothing sings like it for fluid high gain leads.
Great video! Would you say the Muffuletta can get the same big low end as the Green Russian? That's what I'm on the fence about. Also I could be wrong, but the Muffuletta doesn't actually have an Op-Amp setting as it is using the same transistors for all the big muff modes.
BlueBarrier782 it doesn’t quite get there when comparing the op amp. The muffuletta gets some great lows in the jhs setting giving the Russian a run for its money. The great thing about the pedal is its versatility. If you are after one sound and know what you want, an Ehx could be better
basic mario tu-toriales totally agree with you. That’s why the title is Best Muff for You. I don’t think there is actually a best one, but depending what music you play, there’s probably one that suits your sound better. Thx for the comment! 😃
Pedals 'n' Stuff oh man that Dev Ever sounds good! Have you played the deluxe big muff? It’s got so much flexibility I feel like some of the tones from these pedals can be accomplished with that deluxe.
Hi! I wouldn’t really go for any of these for just Hendrix. He used the Arbiter Fuzz Face which is a slightly different voiced fuzz. So I’d be looking for more of a fuzz face style pedal than big muff:)
@@samgoffenguitar Yes, I know, I own several Fuzz faces, but since I now want to buy a Big Muff I don't know which one to choose, which naturally comes close to the Hendrix sound I like
tunaXonXtoast I guess people all have different opinions but the Muffuletta really does cover a number of sounds very well. Thx for watching and the comment 👍
Pedals 'n' Stuff Wow, thanks for question. I have origial modern USA big version, it was my first pedal. I modded it that way I removed all clipping diodes, so just transistors make cliping in circuit. Also I modedded caps in tone stack to give me more mids. Since this one I get EC BMF which is cheap mini pedal copy done with SMD parts. I performed similar mod to that, with great results, on my rig they sount the same, which is funny, since they are my biggest and smallest pedal. And lately I got black Russian big muff, v8 so last version made. I like it stock, but with tone knob rolled all the way down, that gives me grat tone, somehow...
ranked directly against each other (JHS Muffuletta vs EHX OP Amps Muff) Price wise the OP amp wins versatility i've gotta give it to the JHS and for overall sound i'm gonna say JHS so i'd keep the JHS and sell the OP Amps
Needs a white coily cable of DOOOOOOM I didn't want 3, so I got the Deluxe BM Pi. I do have the Russian on my smaller board and an Anarchy Audio Triangle (with "shape" and mids controls). The DBM Pi can get all the Muff sounds known to man. If I had to have one small Muff - Russian. Good demo!
Thanks for the comment! You're right, where's my coily cable!! There are just so many great fuzzes out there - I definitely need to try to check that Deluxe BM Pi out then. I've been using the JHS Muffuletta and am very happy with it at the moment:)
I have the DBMP as well. I'm kind of shocked that it isn't more widely known, since its feature set resolves most of the problems experienced by fuzz users. The attack control makes farty tone a thing of the past. The bass boost lets you crank your tone knob without castrating the low end. The mids circuit massively expands your tonal pallate and lets you cut through the mix. It's hands down the ultimate big muff.
It sounds like the triangle is definitely more woolly fuzz and by the time you get into the op amp big mouth it’s heading more into distortion territory and less fuzz. Probably why a lot of people would agree that the Russian Muff is king.
Mark Farnsworth good points. The op amp is definitely edgier coming closer to a distortion rather than a warm fuzz for sure. The bottom end in the Russian is fantastic.
I'm a fuzz geek, so I kept muffuletta and op amp and I'm very happy to use both of them. Different shades of awesomeness... Wonder how they compare to the Hoof. I'm gona learn that pretty soon :)
Side by side it's not too hard to discern the differences between these, and I know we all think we have preferences, but I challenge anyone to be able to call out which is which in a blind, or live setting. Same with pickups. I like what I like, but the differences are miniscule. Fight me.
Lol :) in many ways I agree. Especially at times with pick ups. But, I think there’s a clear difference between these. I mean the op amp is clearly different from the Russian for example. But the JHS is as near as dammit to most of em:) Thanks for the comment and your opinion dude :)
@@samgoffenguitar I'm not knocking any of this. At all. I have 4 fuzz pedals on my bedroom board right now - and 2 are Muffs, one's a Hizumitas (Muff clone), and an EHX Satisfaction. I like it all, but, the differences between all these, is for the player, not the listener. Nobody, standing in front of a band is thinking, "Hmmm, clear treble, lacks low end though, juicy mids... obvious Triangle Big Muff." Nobody.
strat plus 95 I get your point. There are loads of different muff style pedals and people all have their own preference. I think the main advantage is pedal board space. You have lots of versatility without either having lots of different ‘muffs’ on your board or swapping them out all the time.
strat plus 95 you have a point and for many people this is true I’m sure. But there are times when different fuzzes are useful. Maybe playing in a covers band, you need different sounds. Maybe when writing a song, you want to try different tones. Maybe if you’re double or even quad tracking, you’d use different fuzz pedals for their unique character. So, I agree with you to a point but I find there are times when more than one fuzz is useful and rather than moving things on the board, the JHS allows you to just turn a knob and achieve this. Basically it’s whatever suits you best and you’re style / workflow.
jpfan1992 I believe Iommi used to use Rangemaster treble boosters to hit the front of his Laney amps hard. But I’d go for the Russian if after the general sound personally. This is worth a read : reverb.com/uk/news/master-of-reality-sound-like-black-sabbaths-tony-iommi Cheers😀

Kevin Critchlow Hi. Yes they are the EBS cables and they’re really good. Great sound and I love the fact they take up so little space. I believe they are also the 10cm ones there.
i think the 78 Pi version 3 wasnt the op amp one. that was version 4. Dont qoute me on that though. either way, Muffaleta has alot going for it and any of the Nanos are affordable. EHXs arent really known for or even practical durability though. Id say get the JHS or any one of the probably hundreds of big muff style distortion pedal (or a JHS modded one.). Theres a new one from Wren and Cuff that lets you tweak so much stuff over several gain stages with dip switches on the front that looks INSANE. expensive as hell but just to see what it does would almost make you think any other distortion is obsolete, or at least any other big muff.

James Bradley hey there. Mine was fine, as you can see in the vid there’s no issue with the finish. Wonder why yours was bad …most importantly though, I’m glad it sounds great!
@@samgoffenguitar yes it is. :) I love Muff Pedals.. I use Cornish too, but hey, these are also very good, I own the Green russian, and I want to buy the Triangle one. very cool!!
What blows me away with Big Muffs is that they have a tone for pretty much anything that doesn't require super spanky clean tones Whilst I tend to use an NYC Muff more than anything, I do use the little green box of joy through the secondary amp in my rig (yes, I'm THAT guy). Just find it hits all the spots the NYC misses, and makes rhythm tones especially massive, when they're used together I could go on and on about Big Muffs, seeing as they're my favourite drive/fuzz pedals, but I digress
which pedal would sound best stacked on an already driven amp? kinda need something that wont turn to mush and drop out of the mix in a live situation :))
Connor Powell it’ll depend on the amp and how overdriven to an extent. The Triangle has crazy amounts of volume on tap and you could push your valves pretty hard that way with the sustain still low to maintain clarity. But I think I’d go with the Russian. I just liked the overall tone of it 😄
I can't speak for any of the EHX reissues, but I have the Muffuletta and often run it in front of my OD channel on my Budda and it sounds great. Pushes like an enraged herd of oxen. But another nice thing about it (again, not sure of this with the EHX stuff) is that it doesn't care what you put in front of it. I use it after my wah, in a buffered chain, and it doesn't flinch. A lot of classic fuzzes become unusable when you try that.
This video would’ve been perfect if you had used an audix i5 instead of an sm57. Or a LDC mic in addition to the close mic. I am looking to buy a big muff that isn’t as compressed and cuts better thru the mix. I think that the triangle and op amp sound best to me. You say in the video that the op amp is more agressive, perhaps from the room sound, in the video the triangle sounds more agressive to me. Anyway, best video I have found regarding big muffs that I have an eye on. Cheers!
Hey thanks for the comment and mic suggestions. I guess it depends on what you call aggressive. The Triangle is really full on with loads of gain, but it’s pretty smooth. The Op Amp is more raw sounding so to me that makes it more aggressive. That have very different overall sounds but both are great.
Omar Muñoz opamp is definitely the one if that’s what you’re after. However, if you want to see what a BMP can do listen to Dinosaur Jr as that is all big muff and there’s no cutting through problems with his set up.
There were many varieties of Muffs. JHS went for the "best sounding" vintage references models they had. From what I remember, JHS put unique circuits for each setting, which means it's faking nothing; the muffletta is the real deal.. Electroharmonix may have used their own reference models that were slightly different.
Thanks for the comment. Yes, as I write in the review at www.samgoffenguitar.com/post/jhs-muffuletta JHS used specific pedals to base their Muffuletta on. I didn’t intend to suggest they ‘faked’ anything. EHX did use some different models to base their reissues on but I thought it a worthy comparison as people interested in the reissues might also be interested in the JHS pedal
Lukas Neufeld thx for the comment. Think this was addressed in another comment a while ago. But the idea of the comparison was more about the fact that EHX had these reissue pedals out and it was useful to compare them all. The JHS was there to see if the sounds were similar enough so you could get that one pedal and have all basses covered. Very useful if you can for pedal board space and just versatility. I think it comes close enough:)
Keep in mind that JHS used original Big Muffs to create the sounds in the muffuletta, and you're comparing it to EHX reissues. Im not saying the muffuletta is a perfect clone of every Big Muff, i'm just saying there's going to be an inherent difference even if it was a perfect clone.
Clayton Sage thx for the comment. You’re totally correct but I think as the reissues are also based on originals and made by EHX I think a direct comparison isn’t too unfair. I did include in the written review the models that the JHS was derived from : www.samgoffen.co.uk/blog/jhs-muffuletta Thx again. Appreciate all comments😀

I have the deluxe version of Soviet, and it's it's great with Rat before it. Triangle or the double priced Hizumitas, I went to Hizumitas.
Very nice!
Thank you so much! I was looking for a review of ehx big muff reissues vs muffuletta. Great demo!
Esteban Muro thx for the kind words🙏😃. Glad it was useful for you!
The OpAmp one sounds great ! Think I'll be getting this one first after all ! + I enjoy the design of this pedal
Vlad Swayne awesome man! Great pedals all of them, I’m sure you’ll love it.
I'm so split between the Op and the Triangle, going to order one this week but its a hard decision
They’re quite different animals. The op is much more raw with the mids in the triangle more prominent and smoother:)
Great comments, thanks for sharing. I’ve not tried the Tone Wicker, sounds like I need to. The Skreddy Mayo is great:)
Such a tough choice. Triangle has amazing sustain but the Op Amp sounds perfect for grunge.
Nathan Bernhardt that sums those two up for me too. They are their strengths for sure😀
You should do an updated version of this with the rams head
As soon as you send me one, I’ll do it;)
i tried all of them live in sweetwater with a strat through a blues junior tweed and the russian blew me away. came in thinking triangle all the way too. all personal preference though of course!
Awesome! Great comment and yep it’s all personal of course, but isn’t that green box of fuzz beautiful?😁

Jhs PI model isn't op-amp based, it's transistor based, so it'll never be like the op amp.
GuitarPartho from JHS site: - THE PI - “1977-1978 V3”
An instantly recognizable red Pi symbol gives this pedal its moniker. This is not to be confused with the later redesigned NYC version released in 2000. It features a more aggressive sound.
Famous users: Frank Zappa, Billy Corgan
But as I also say the muffuletta isn’t based on the reissue and there will be differences. I completely agree with your comment: they won’t sound the same and this is why I already pointed that out :)
@@samgoffenguitar totally. I wanted it to sound like the op amp for that Smashing Pumpkins sound. I love the muffuletta though. Great video.
GuitarPartho thx!! 🙏👍
@@samgoffenguitar jhs has argued that Corgan used the version they recreated but the new OpAmp pedal is being endorsed publically by Billy Corgan.
The Op-Amp version is a loud brut, and it's my favorite one. I built one for myself using a different diode configuration that actually improves it if you can believe that.
Great demo by the way.
sprayscience thx for the comment. Maybe you need to start making some pedals yourself😃
@@CoreyKJ is find it hard to choose between the Russian and the triangle. Both are awesome:)
Hi, thx for the comments:)
Yes, I go into what the muffuletta is based on in the written review on the website. You can find it here: www.samgoffenguitar.com/post/jhs-muffuletta
You capture well the awesomeness of the Triangle. I put an EQ after mine to remove some nasty highs but nothing sings like it for fluid high gain leads.
Thank you so much. A great pedal indeed:)
I think your videos are good, you often use the same lick, only so I can judge correctly. Great thing ... :-)
Thx mate, it's great when people play really fast, cool licks, but it's also useful just to play simply so you can really hear the pedal;)
I love the Muffuletta but the tone suck is not great on the Pi setting… so i bought an op-amp for that
Interesting, thanks for that. Anyone else noticed this?
Great video! Would you say the Muffuletta can get the same big low end as the Green Russian? That's what I'm on the fence about.
Also I could be wrong, but the Muffuletta doesn't actually have an Op-Amp setting as it is using the same transistors for all the big muff modes.
BlueBarrier782 it doesn’t quite get there when comparing the op amp. The muffuletta gets some great lows in the jhs setting giving the Russian a run for its money. The great thing about the pedal is its versatility. If you are after one sound and know what you want, an Ehx could be better
@bflo1000 great idea. Wish I was a bass player;) have you got the means to do it and then link it in the comments?

basic mario tu-toriales totally agree with you. That’s why the title is Best Muff for You. I don’t think there is actually a best one, but depending what music you play, there’s probably one that suits your sound better.

Pedals 'n' Stuff oh man that Dev Ever sounds good!
Have you played the deluxe big muff? It’s got so much flexibility I feel like some of the tones from these pedals can be accomplished with that deluxe.
Will a boss psa power supply work to power the russian Big Muff Pi?
Standard 9v centre negative for all these, so typical boss style.
My boss eq7 can make a distortion sound like a fuzz pedal, so i got a distortion and a fuzx
Hi, for the Hendrix sound which one would you choose between these four?
Hi! I wouldn’t really go for any of these for just Hendrix. He used the Arbiter Fuzz Face which is a slightly different voiced fuzz. So I’d be looking for more of a fuzz face style pedal than big muff:)
@@samgoffenguitar Yes, I know, I own several Fuzz faces, but since I now want to buy a Big Muff I don't know which one to choose, which naturally comes close to the Hendrix sound I like
@Savior.Greenmount Pi or Russian. Not the op amp. This is a situation when the JHS wins out to be honest as it’s so versatile.

Great video. Yes , educational. Thanks.
Thx for the kind comment:) 🙏
Best one for me is that with mids. So no stock one. But love my modded one. Cheers.
Marshallbluesrock thx for the comment. Which modded one do you use?
Marshallbluesrock very cool man. Sounds like a great mod!
Yes, since you have mids on your Big Muff you are happy player. Cheers mate.

Vinyl Scratch and that’s exactly what I did😃👍
Needs a white coily cable of DOOOOOOM
I didn't want 3, so I got the Deluxe BM Pi.
@@fpsknifer9906 THIS^^^^

He’s the dude!!
Pedals 'n' Stuff you had me at fantastic bottom end. I just bought the JHS modified Russian after watching your demo of all 3.
Mark Farnsworth nice one! Very glad the video was useful :)

CocuMagnifique very cool. Let us know when you’ve tried it😄
What's the verdict?? I have the Hoof but haven't tried the Op Amp or the Muffuletta yet.
But the JHS is as near as dammit to most of em:)
Thanks for the comment and your opinion dude :)
@@samgoffenguitar I'm not knocking any of this. At all. I have 4 fuzz pedals on my bedroom board right now - and 2 are Muffs, one's a Hizumitas (Muff clone), and an EHX Satisfaction. Ezra Elliott it’s awesome:)
what is the interest of muffuletta? For the price of the mufuletta you can buy almost 3 big muff with better sound !!
strat plus 95 I get your point. There are loads of different muff style pedals and people all have their own preference. I think the main advantage is pedal board space. You have lots of versatility without either having lots of different ‘muffs’ on your board or swapping them out all the time.
@@samgoffenguitar Yes, but who has several fuzz on his pedalboard? Once you've found the right one, you don't need several fuzz.
strat plus 95 you have a point and for many people this is true I’m sure. Basically it’s whatever suits you best and you’re style / workflow.

i think the 78 Pi version 3 wasnt the op amp one. that was version 4.

What blows me away with Big Muffs is that they have a tone for pretty much anything that doesn't require super spanky clean tones
Whilst I tend to use an NYC Muff more than anything, I do use the little green box of joy through the secondary amp in my rig (yes, I'm THAT guy). Just find it hits all the spots the NYC misses, and makes rhythm tones especially massive, when they're used together
I could go on and on about Big Muffs, seeing as they're my favourite drive/fuzz pedals, but I digress
James Alexander great comments. I bet the green muff really fills out the sounds using that second amp.
@@samgoffenguitar it really does
To the point where it's rare that I can practice with both amps, whilst I'm at home
which pedal would sound best stacked on an already driven amp? kinda need something that wont turn to mush and drop out of the mix in a live situation :))
Connor Powell it’ll depend on the amp and how overdriven to an extent. The Triangle has crazy amounts of volume on tap and you could push your valves pretty hard that way with the sustain still low to maintain clarity. But I think I’d go with the Russian. I just liked the overall tone of it 😄
Billy corgan of the smashing pumpkins used a op amp into a dirty jcm 800
Zane Tweelinckx and that sounded great, but was certainly a specific sound. It’s gonna depend what you’re after, this definitely sounded cool though👍
The Budda amps are awesome. Have you tried their wahs too?
This comment is so bad. Of course he uses a sm57 and the triangle is the least aggressive one.
Yes, as I write in the review at www.samgoffenguitar.com/post/jhs-muffuletta
JHS used specific pedals to base their Muffuletta on. I didn’t intend to suggest they ‘faked’ anything. EHX did use some different models to base their reissues on but I thought it a worthy comparison as people interested in the reissues might also be interested in the JHS pedal
Just ordered a FF clone from CAD in Russia I'll let you know Great price point So if you do a FF demo please include Thanks Good stuff 👍
Excellent. Look forward to hearing how it sounds!
The pi logo is not the op amp big muff, its the "standard" jack white model muff
@@samgoffenguitar agreed. great video btw

I did include in the written review the models that the JHS was derived from : www.samgoffen.co.uk/blog/jhs-muffuletta
