This is what I live for! I have heard a lot of trivia about the original episodes, but consistently TriAngulum comes up with something I haven't seen. Now I want to see one devoted to the two other episodes that were planned after "Joy Machine"! This is uncharted territory for many I'm sure!
Well done! I'm one of the ones who love this episode! Yes, there are a few parts that were subpar, but overall well done and interesting concept. And correction (sorry, I know they get annoying), but Sandra was not the only woman who played Kirk....because she DIDN'T play Kirk. If you see the episode she explains, "I'm not Captain Kirk, that is obvious." Furthermore she didn't bother to assume any mannerisms of Kirk.
For me, Sandra Smith's performance is what makes this episode watchable. She's outstanding. I love the way she does "Kirk" when she takes the witness stand at the court martial. That told me she had taken the time to actually research the part to really behave the way Kirk would. She makes this episode for me, because it is weak in a number of areas. Thanks also for answering my question about why Uhura was missing, I had wondered about that. Enjoyed this, thanks.
"Wire heads" were a running theme in Larry Niven's books back in 1966 and is briefly touched on in Ringworld. Niven wrote the "Slaver Weapon" for the animated series. Apparently Strugeon read some of his stories.
You probably have a video in the works already, knowing you... But a video about a S4 TOS would be great. One where you talk about what you would like to have seen and one where they had planned some stories for S4. :) In fact, I'm not asking, I'm telling you, because *RESISTANCE IS FUTILE!*
They don't. That was not Kirk who ordered the executions, it was someone assuming his body who tried to cover up that fact by having those who found out killed. Also, Chekov in this episode explicitly states that Starfleet has forbidden the death penalty for everything except "general order 4." Chekov (the writers) may have been confusing general order 4 with general order 7 from "The Menagerie." In that episode it was stated that Starfleet has only one death penalty and that is for anyone communicating with Talos IV.
We sometimes have to forgive our more passionate ST loyalists. 😅 That being said, I consider myself a great fan of the original series and cast and you did a great job outlining the circumstances at the end of its run.
It's very interesting that the episode preview hid the Lester and Kirk body swap plot. It focused on Kirk acting irrationally and the crew planning mutiny. I wouldn't have guessed that, those old previews tended to spill out most of the plot.
They show the swap out of context then after a mind meld with the lady Kirk's putting the chief medical officer the one person who can remove his command on trial for.mutiny with the rest of the crew that backed.him up.
Nicely done! Thank you for these Behind the Scenes videos. They are pretty amazing and the graphics are fantastic! I used to really dislike this episode but have come to like it. LL&P
The main things I remember this episode for are the fact that my father hated it and the amount of memes that spawned from screenshots of Shatner's hammed up acting
My take away: Shatner did a good job. I felt empathy for our antagonist because she felt denied her desired future because of the "rules." Surprised the such rules existed in such an enlightened universe as we're led to believe the Federation is supposed to be. Thank goodness by Picard's time, such male centered rules were lifted.
I love Sandra Smiths performance in this episode she manages to capture Kirks mannerisms perfectly. I know by the time Star Trek Voyager premiered she would have been to old , do you think she would have made a good Capt. Janeway?? Hats off to to William Shatner for his performance but i think its Ms Smith who steels the show for me.
I hadn’t realized the story was meant as a criticism of feminism, but now that you make the point it does seem an obvious reflection of attitudes of the time 🖖
Dr,Lester didn't realize that a century later their would be women Starfleet Captains and Admirals in the later 23rd and 24th centuries and the 25th as well. When she became Kirk in the episode she allowed her envy, jealousy and ego and her hatred of Kirk go to head and started the crew to suspect that Kirk was not himself?
Captain Kirk, sure has a issue with people who either like him or dislike him. Lt.Cmdr. Ben Finney and Dr. Janice Lester are two people who really dislike Kirk because their jealous and bitter. Two emotional driving adversaries for Kirk to deal with. Good episodes.
I think the bad ratings were all down to the bad time slot they had on the air. Friday Night at 10? Bill Shatner explains this in many interviews. "Who's home watching TV at 10 on a Friday Night?" This, I believe, was the sole reason for bad ratings. Had they had a good time slot, think of all the episodes they could have made!
what always got me giggling at some parts of the episode was the way kirk would act all feminine. Especially when he sat there filing his nails and no one paid any attention to that.
So you are saying that Roddenberry like the great Dr Zefram Cochrane was another flawed solid, genius yes, but still a flawed solid. And that Herbert Wallerstein was murdered by his housekeeper ? Are they sure it was not really O. J who committed the murder ? By the way, it must be said, that Simpson was considered for the titel role in the first Terminator movie, but lost out to Arnold Schwarzenegger, because James Cameron could not conceive of him as a remorseless killer Terminator .
I have to admit that while this is FAR from one of my favorite episodes, it never occurred to me that it was written as a slam against womens' rights. It makes perfect sense, I just never considered it in that context. That is a time in our history we can't afford to forget. As to the nonsense about nonissues. I piss and moan with the best (worst) of them but only really get angry at those who get wrapped around the axel of those folks that disagree with them. While I may never share an opinion with someone I can't stand it (because I stay seated in my wheelchair) when we all can't talk Trek because we can't get all the different points of view. It's Star Trek, not a world-ending topic... Get a life.
Terrible episode. But it's fun to watch Shatner filing his nails. Also, my uncle Jim played one of the security guards who arrests Mr. Spock (he's the surly looking one with the wavy black hair).
"Brain, brain, what is brain?" To me that's the only worse TOS episode than this one. I think it would have been cool for Captain Rachael Garrett (captain of the Enterprise "C" for those who may not know) to have been a descendant of Dr. Lester in canon.
I think many critics of this show misunderstand Janice Lester. She is not a representation of ALL women but rather a representation of a single woman suffering from paranoid delusions (hence why she failed her Star Fleet evalutions and blamed that failure on her status as a woman).
I think you're wrong about this... When the people of the time, and those involved in the show say it was sexist, and meant to represent women of the time, I tend to believe those people... After all, they were there, and they were the ones who made it and knew what they were doing...
There's a good argument this episode is sexist in its historical context (correct me if I'm wrong but I think the episode implies there were NO female captains in Starfleet), but swap the female character with a male and it's just like a dozen other episodes where some crazy starfleet captain is just the villain of the week (Matt Decker, Garth of Izar). Technically you could classify The Ultimate Computer as racist because Richard Daystrom was portrayed as arrogant and incompetent and got lots and lots of people killed. The biggest problem with Turnabout Intruder is that it's just a bad episode, though it would have been nice to see a female captain in TOS if only in passing.
What a way to go out...with one of the worst episodes ever. Ah, but what a showcase for Shatner's overacting propensity featuring his overblown caricature of how he perceived a woman's mannerisms and behavior.
Remember, he was not just playing a woman, he was playing a mentally unstable woman hellbent on taking over command of the Enterprise and then, seeing it fall apart in front of his/her eyes. She was manic and desperate! I think Bill Shatner did a heck of a great job, considering he had the FLU at the time of filming! I personally love this episode.
What is all this nonsense about "sexist" and "misogynist"? It's a fine episode. There's nothing wrong with Gene Roddenberry. trying to superimpose silly 21st century political correctness on a 1960s show is ridiculous! In fact, this stuff is pretty ridiculous even in our time.
Sorry but EVERYONE else seems to be fine with it and Im fine with it so I suggest its a you thing rather then a video thing! And I cant please everyone, so 1 out of 45000 subs isnt bad ;)
Of course I consider all comments I get, however in over 2 years and 10's of thousands of comments, you're the only person to ever say that... And thank you :)
The episode also contradicts the cage footage with Number one as First Officer later cannon added two prominent female captans before Kirk the captain of the Earth Starfleet ship NX -02 Columbia and the captain of the USS Shenzsu from discovery. Star Trek 4 has a female captain on a Miranda class ship that gets hit by the whale probe. The Enterprise C is commanded by a woman. This episode seems to break with the perfect future concept and suddenly say a Federation of planets solved every issue but sexism. I could except that she's nuts because she's Kirk's crazy past one night stand back for revenge. Surprised that never became a film

This video is such a revelation. Shatner did the right thing. In ST universe, if there was a wall there, present or not, then there was a wall.
It is indeed a lackluster sexist piece of trash, but the scenes where Shatner acts out the reversing of the body switch are priceless entertainment!
I really enjoy watching your videos they R extremely fascinating
Thank you very much!
@@TriAngulumAudioStudios U R so very Welcome
I find it curious that 2260's starfleet has summary execution for mutiny! We don't even do that today.
They don't. That was not Kirk who ordered the executions, it was someone assuming his body who tried to cover up that fact by having those who found out killed.

It conflicts with dialog in S1 where the only remaining death sentence is.going to see the planet from the cage.

Bill Shatner was fighting a terrible flu during the filming of this episode.
He was also combating terrible writing.

Kirk plays two parts and a woman plays Kirk... this episode has it all!!! Kirk Forever!!!
The STNG episode "The Game" had a similar plot to "The Joy Machine" at 3:00.

Star Trek meets Freaky Friday
This is the episode where the Fan-made Star Trek Continues started from. They wanted to finish the 4th & 5th year of the TOS Mission!

@TriAngulum Audio Studios that and just working with starfleet as a helmsman, or a first officer and traveling through space haha that would be fun
