I always found this to be one of the more enjoyable season two episodes. I get that it wasn’t as good as it could have been, but it wasn’t THAT bad. Some great humor.
I always enjoyed "The Royale". Watching the series in sequence, it was one of the earliest examples of "something goes wrong on the holodeck" before that became overused. And I know, it's not the Enterprise's holodeck, but it is an alien holodeck. It's not as good an episode as "Q Who" or "A Matter of Honor" but it's much better than "The Outrageous Okana" and "Shades of Gray". It's so-so and I enjoy it as such.
This is one of my favorite episodes mainly because it reminds me of my grandmother and spending time at her house. My grandmother had recorded many cartoons for me and on of the commercials that happened to be recorded was the preview for this episode. Also, the first time I saw the episode was when I was at her house.
My favorite part about this episode is it had someone (Picard, maybe?) explaining that the story and characters are bad because it's a recreation of a bad book. It almost felt like a 4th wall breaking moment. Very meta.
It's a bit ironic that TOS actually used episodes like this for budget purposes. Back then, studios had permanent sets that they used for multiple shows (city block, western town) and had costume departments full of period clothes. It's really just a holodeck episode using someone else's holodeck.
I may have an explanation for your second mistake: Data mentioned the "New United Nations". That means that nations are still existing, otherwise, this organisation would not be called United Nations but rather United Earth or something like that. So, the USA might be still in existence, if not said otherwise in the Star Trek canon. Even if the USA is now part of some meganation, the US could be existing as a state in this superstate, with NASA still in existence. Bavaria, a German state initiated its own space program some years ago that is called Bavaria One (even if that is a rather small space program dependent on other space programs).
The bellboy looked like he got hit with ship phasers with the overlay! 😂 I remember this episodes and mixed feeling about it. I thought more of ways to try to leave the hotel in this episode. Interesting too see the the behind the scenes facts on this one.
I remember when the episode aired the first time. I was trying to convince my friends to watch the show. So we all got together and this was the episode. It was truely embarrassing. I no longer try to convince anyone of anything these days.
I loved "The Royale" when I first saw it. At the time I was a 60s Twilight Zone and "loyal" TOS fan who thought of the TNG crew as poseurs, and thought "now they're doing Trek the 'right' way". Now that I know that Trek is capable of doing oh so much better, I think I like this episode only because of nostalgia. But to find out Pulaski was robbed of her "Bones" moment breaks my heart.
The ship might have been being built before the united earth was formed and it was probably built in orbit and launched before they had a chance to change it
I knew nothing of the tug-of-war over this episode. Very interesting. Not surprising knowing what I do of Hurley. Such a shame as it sounds like the original script was going to be a fun romp with a bittersweet ending. You mentioned A Piece of the Action and I still have this distant hope that someday that planet comes back for a piece of the Federations' Action. Thank you! I hope you have a great one!
I this episode. Strangely enough, I felt that this one had the most TOS feel to it, despite the other guys best efforts, I guess that's why it felt so out of place on a more modern show.
This has always been one of my favorites. If you place yourself back in time, had watched season 1, and was really happy to be seeing new episodes, the crew was coming together and maturing into their characters. Sure, looking back from 2020, the production quality looks weak, but it is a classic sci-fi story. The thin stereotype characters perfectly reflect what they were: tropes from a pulp novel. It probably also helped that ST:TNG was aired after 10pm where I lived. :D
When I originally watched this episode, back in the day, I disliked it even then, as did a large chunk of the fandom, hence it's lower ratings. But everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and I appreciate that! As no one can be wrong about an opinion :)
When released The Royale was ST-TNG episode #38. Comparing it to all that preceded it, I rank it at #16. Upon watching its first airing in March of 1989, it struck me as a middle of the road episode, with some good things; Picard nodding off, "Baby needs a new pair of shoes, Ron Jones music, Mickey D's ensemble, Worf's "What a terrible way to die' and the discovery of Col Ritchie. The characters were a little over the top and the sets were cheesy. But for this 1st generation Trekkie well, that was kind of par for the coarse. Mr Hurley, by many accounts was a world class D-bag (but he did give us the Borg). In your research TAS, have you ever uncovered why Gene R hired him and made him showrunner? Great Back Trek. Thanks for posting, RNB
Thanks for the video now the story might be better if instead riker wins the crew's release through long hi stakes poker game while the rest of crew learn more about the aliens behind all this. The reason for the NASA markings is maybe to show all the different agencies involved or like the federation would do later on made a ship with whatever was lying around and forgot to take the markings off.
We were just talking about this episode in the Supergeeks group and this was my example of a bad episode. It was a fun discussion and I'm glad to have some new insight.

To me, the episode smacked of the fate of David Bowman in 2001. Except the aliens seemed to have a bigger budget than what befell poor Dave in that awful white room.
Funny how that goes. Many of the sci-fi writers from TOS said the same about Gene. That he ruined their work. Maybe Gene didn't truly know classic science fiction but he knew what made a great TV series.
Gene actually didnt contribute that much to TOS... People such as DC Fontana, Gene L Coon, John D F Black etc created MOST of the staples we see in Star Trek. Gene merely stole credit for their work! Hence why SciFi writers disliked Gene so much!
I always liked this episode. I know it's not fantastic. And would love to have been able to see the original script done. But... it's campy and fun. Plus the guest actors all do an excellent job for what they were given.
thanks for an awesome video Hurley needed to be fired for his actions he stiffled many of the great writers of the series but sadly gene didnt see it that way well thankfully we have you to show us what really went on behind the scenes keep up the great work

Yes but in my defense i was around 9 when the episode first came out and 12 when i saw a rerun and went to the library to find it. Edit: BTW there is no "Blue Moon Hotel" ether.
This episode is on my Skip List. Since I'm going on a binge of all Trek shows on Netflix in order from timeline (in universe), I recently hit this one, and was like, nope. Skip. I didn't care for this when I first saw it on cable in 2001. And almost 19 years later, I really don't care for it. Heaven help me as I go through the rest of TNG, DS9 (of which I have three I already plan to skip) and VOY (have two on that). I just hope outside of the ones I already have, I don't have more to add. I have eight episodes. I'll watch for morbid curiosity, if bored and nothing else is on. But, if I can help it, episodes like this, I skip. I'm sad for Tormei. He had a great idea, but, Hurley (censored) with it. As the saying goes, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" Hurley, you took a great idea and screwed with it. Jerk!! Thanks for another good episode, Tri. I appreciate your historical videos of Trek behind the scenes.
Nice research! Especially for these "lesser" episodes! This story is a curate's egg for me. So glad they ditched Pulaski aping McCoy lines (like how EMH had)... that was the biggest shocker for me in the behind the scenes scuffles. Didn't know they had so many budget problems. It still looks remarkably good. Torme's original script sounds decent too. The story was smart in using the 1D characters and cliches via recreation of a cheesy book the astronaut read that the aliens thought was a documentary. (Holy Galaxy Quest, batman!) In any other context this episode would be the truest stinker and Torme is capable of a lot of great work... outside the book context it'd be far, far worse.
I actually enjoyed this episode when I saw it. I was probably about 9 at the time, so easily impressed! Have you done a dedicated video of Maurice Hurley?
It's not a very good episode but I always enjoyed it in re-runs just because of how oddball it is. Like that Voyager episode The 37s where they find a bunch of earth humans in the Delta Quadrant including Amelia Earhartt(?!), very stupid but interesting enough to enjoy.
I don't remember having any strong feelings for the episode when I first watched it back then. But I was much younger too, so I was a bit less discerning. There were a few good moments, but overall the episode didn't do much to contribute to the lore overall

It’s a shame the original script wasn’t allowed to be made. It sounded like a homage to TOS. I doubt it would’ve worked because S1 was too much like TOS, but it might’ve worked. TriAngulum Audio Studios oh crazy! I assumed the issues from the strike had lots of little effects on the season. I only heard Hurley was “Wilding Out” so to speak and they went through a lot of writers early on. Lots of interesting behind the scenes stuff in Star Trek!
If only they had used a bit of the money to make the revolving door make it look like the crew couldn't escape by coming in at the same time as they left like something from Portal and Portal 2, and not like they just couldn't figure out how to let go of the push bar till they were back inside. Just cut the footage in half and move up the left side by about 2 seconds and boom, instant spooky portal effect and no more "How does a revolving door work?"

The truth isnt Dragging anyone, it is simply that, the truth... If Hurley had been a good guy, then there wouldnt have been a problem. It's his own bad behavior which he brought on himself, which causes fandom to dislike him!
Personally I like this episode. Of course it`s dumb and full of scientific bullshit but it`s also creepy as hell. The idea of human hotel inside a floating bubble on alien hostile planet is scary and surreal. You can`t leave this place, you know that you`re far away from home and you`ll never go back to Earth. Outside your windows is always a darkness and you`re alone, surrounded by fake human like phantoms created by some inhuman, alien minds. It`s hell.
Mr. Hurley may have been an unlikable jerk, but I have to agree with him here. The story is very derivative of several original series episodes and a bit stale.
An OK episode of a basically boring series....Until the last two or three seasons....Unlike the far better ST:DS9 and Enterprise....With Voyager reminding me A LOT of "the old west" Wagon Train series....Only not as entertaining.....But I have to admit....ANYTHING prior to the "Kelvin" version of Star Trek is better....
I actually like The Royale, especially seeing Data shooting dice at the Craps table.
Well of course to each their own :) #IDIC

Why this is seen as a bad episode is crap. It's a personal favorite of mine. It's entertaining and I like the nasa inclusion.
Hey you can like it as much as you want, but that will NEVER change the fact you're in the minority on that one!
This series should be subtitled, "Dragging Maurice Hurley".
The truth isnt Dragging anyone, it is simply that, the truth... If Hurley had been a good guy, then there wouldnt have been a problem. It's his own bad behavior which he brought on himself, which causes fandom to dislike him!
Your opinion on the quality of the episode is not a fact, it’s just an opinion.
I NEVER said it was, so Im not sure why you think you have to make this comment... But it is supported by the majority of the fanbase!
Tbh this episode was just boring. It's a shame that there is so much infighting behind the scenes
It`s hell.
Horrifying episode.
Mr. Hurley may have been an unlikable jerk, but I have to agree with him here. The story is very derivative of several original series episodes and a bit stale.
I think that could be said about MOST episodes of Trek, in every series, along with MOST scifi shows in general...
