Everyone has answered what made this song-Merry Clayton. I recommend you watch the movie 20 feet from Stardom. It’s about backing singers. It’s a favorite movie of mine and talks about this song.
Merry Clayton got a late call from a Producer one night in 1969 hoping that she would sing on this track. Still in her pyjamas, hair in rollers and four months pregnant, she arrived at the studio, cementing her place in rock history with the “it’s just a shot away” vocal line. She said "I was tired, it was cold and my voice cracked. We listened back and they said: ‘Oh that’s bloody fabulous. Can you do it again?’”

On point Paul. Only other people on the recording are, Nicky Hopkins played piano, Jimmy Miller played percussion. Have you ever noticed that Mick Jagger and Tina Turner are both high energy and have very similar moves? That's because Tina worked with Jagger on his stage presence and how to dance. Mick was also influenced by James Brown and Mick's mother.
You forgot Brian Jones who was the group's founder, Mick Taylor who replaced him and Ron Wood who in turn replaced him. Jones and Taylor in particular were incredibly important in influencing the band's sound during their respective tenures. Never forget that.

Merry Clayton sang an octave higher towards the end of the track "RAPE, MURDER." Just after the solo. She subsequently had a miscarriage. 😢😢 Still love this song.
No one forgets the feelings they feel or the impression this song makes on them the first time they hear it. Ive heard it a thousand times and every time it still conjures up the mood and feelings i felt the first time I heard it. Paint it Black, Mothers Little Helper, Sympathy For the Devil, Bitch, Satisfaction, Midnight Rambler are all Stones classics. Happy Listening! Great Reaction BTW.
The Rolling Stones had a ton of hits! This song was very popular especially due to the voice of “Merry Clayton” which added a darker tone but also very powerful tone! Great reaction Mia ❤️❤️🔥🔥🔥🙏🏻 (also I truly believe hearing the studio version was important because that way you hear the “raw” emotion)❤️🔥
Understated. IMO, they are the single greatest rock and rock band of all time. The quality and volume of classics is enormous. This doesn't mean that there aren't other truly great rock bands, LZ, The Who, Pink Floyd, and even Metallica. But The Stones are the standard.
This came out in 1969 and at the time, it was written by Mick Jagger (vocals) and Keith Richards (guitar) who wrote the original songs in the Rolling Stones... (the late) Charlie Watts (drums) and Bill Wyman (bass) rounded out the band... Original 2nd guitarist Brian Jones left the band before this record and passed away in 1969 after drowning in his own pool. Mick Taylor (guitar) replaced him until 1974, but he wasn't featured on this track... Keith Richards is credited w/ the guitars on this track. The female vocals were performed by Merry Clayton, an American singer. The Rolling Stones usually perform it live in concert w/ a guest singer.. Ronnie Wood (guitar) has been part of the Rolling Stones since 1975 and is featured on the live versions since.
The group, The Rolling Stones. Vocalists Merry Clayton & Mick Jagger. Lead guitar Keith Richards. Drummer Charlie Watts. Bass Bill Wyman. What is this song about? The Vietnam War. War children? US Soldiers in Vietnam. Burns like a red coat carpet? Napalm! Gimme shelter or I'll fade away? Shelter against the attacking North Vietnamese Army. Rape, murder only a shot away? The consequences of war. Love is only a kiss away? Why don't we just make up and settle our differences without bloodshed? Now you have the gist of this song. It is timeless. As wonderful today as when it was first aired. Keith Richards who found himself bored one day at home because it was raining, wrote this song. Bravo Keith. Superb song.
I am a 68 year old man that wonders if today`s music is lacking something for your generation, Thereis so much more Feelings put into songs I grew up with. In the late 50's/ early 60's, there was a cultural shock that rock n' roll music brought to the shores of the UK and Europe... American music by black artists included the blues, jazz, R&B, gospel and rock n' roll... and the British kids who were raised on their parents' music suddenly got a whole new world of music to listen to... Elvis, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Ricky Nelson were the white artists that owed their careers and legacies to black artists like Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters and Robert Johnson. Rock n' roll music was aiming to break down the ethnic barriers between European white and African black people... It was a music form that was literally called a 'threat' by the authorities... The Beatles were banned in the USSR in the 60's. Rock n' roll records were illegal in communist countries and punishable by jail if caught w/ them. But bands like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Kinks... they all loved American music and wanted to make their own. When The Beatles came to America, they refused to play to segregated audiences - they demanded and supported integration in the civil rights era. The Rolling Stones did the same when they came to America; they had opened for black American artists in the UK whom they idolized. In the UK, the BBC were the broadcasters of media and music, and they would not promote bands like The Beatles or The Rolling Stones... So, pirate radio stations would broadcast from offshore ships and play their record so that the British public could hear the music without censorship or interference. We owe the 60's artists a gratitude of thanks for helping break down the walls between 'white' and 'black' music... It certainly helped to bolster the civil rights movement and gain support for equality of people in the USA.
The Rolling Stones are a legendary English rock ‘n’ roll band from the 60s who have recently released a new album which is doing wonders in the UK charts at the moment. fantastic reaction. I hope you are able to react to more songs by The Rolling Stones in the future.
Sir Mick Jagger main frontman, who turned 80 on July 26th same day as Roger Taylor, whose a few years younger, they've been going since the 1960's and still flying around the world and selling out stadiums. Charlie Watts on drums passed away about a year or so ago, Bill Wyman very similar to John Deacon the quiet one of the group, he retired from the group must be twenty years ago maybe longer

The best live version of "Gimme Shelter" with footage is on the Stones 1972 concert film, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, THE ROLLING STONES. It doesn't have the backing vocals, but it does show the Stones at their performing peak. Well work checking out. Any live Stones from the mid 1960's to the early '70's in particular is brilliant.
The Rolling Stones came onto the scene shortly after the Beatles blew up and took over the world. The Beatles were an entity onto themselves (and are still the biggest selling musical artists of all time), but the Rolling Stones were the next up to carry the torch for the British Invasion that occurred in popular music at the time. I highly recommend for your next Rolling Stones reaction, checking out the studio recording of the Rolling Stones song "Sympathy for the Devil". Oh, and if you ever heard the song "Moves like Jagger" by Maroon 5 (and featuring Christina Aguilera), Adam Levine is singing about the Rolling Stones lead singer Mick Jagger. Peace

Get a video of them performing this live. It is dramatic and as epic as it sounds. By the time they got to this stage of their careers, they could afford anything to make it visually as dramatic as it sounds on the recording so, I don't think you will be disappointed. After all, they became the top Rock and Roll band in the world, and that's no exaggeration. Have fun.

The greatness of British Rock bands like The Stones.. is that they took the art-form but did not forget its roots... This song has so much soulfulness in its rhythms and tones even down to the way Jagger sang it.. and the fact that they collaborated with African-American vocalist (Merry Clayton) elevated this song to unmatched heights... This is 1969 when (probably) white American artists did not make such choices... Also yes the vocals had to have power but the pain in Clayton's voice is what makes it special..it was NOT about Vietnam for her
Merry made this song work, Mick did well for sure with the lead vocals. About my favorite song ever, and I'm 67, and I listened to a lot of super music in my lifetime. Great reaction young Lady!
Now you're ready for "Sympathy For The Devil", "Paint It Black", "Can't You Hear Me Knockin'" & "Angie". Their brand new single is "Angry" and it's a killer. Live version of "Gimme Shelter" with Lisa Fisher is the one you wanna hear. Incredible. The Rolling Stones have been around since '62.
" I Can't Get No Satisfaction" lyric video or a live version . That would be a good Rolling Stones one to do Mia. Also agree their latest song is 🔥 as well.

I think you're lucky to have reacted to probably one of the best rock songs ever and the best version. Live versions unfortunately never do justice to this piece of gold in the studio, albeit done at 3 and 4 in the morning if you can believe it.
It's actually The Rolling "Stones". 🥴 Their rabbit hole is Sooo.. deep you'll never reach the bottom. They started in the 60s about the same time as The Beatles and are still putting out content. The actual member who formed the band Brian Jones died at an early age, drowning I believe was his down fall. The drummer Charlie Watts just passed away here about a year ago. The front man Mick Jagger is still Mick Jagger. He's known for his vocals and his showmanship on stage. Keith Richards the lead guitarist looks like he's been drug through a dessert but he's still kicking.(Lots of partying and drugs) In fact they just released a new track recently and all of them are in their 80s. They have a unique genre from Rock and Roll, blues and even a touch of country. Enjoy the fall into their rabbit hole. 🥴🤔✌️💯👍😁🥰
Excellent description Leon. Everything about this song especially the guitar is awesome. One of my all time favorite rock songs. Right up there with Born on the Bayou.
I remember when this song first came out. I recorded it off the radio onto a cassette tape. I just played at intro over and over. Wore out the rewind button on a couple of cassette recorders doing that.
You've heard the Stones many times you just didn't know it. The song "Start Me Up" is played at sporting events everywhere and several of their songs are used in movies/TV shows and commercials.
This song was made during an era where Bands were making music, not to win an award, but to express a cause they believed in. Here of course a strong statement against the Vietnam war.
I know you appreciate great music when your face begins to change @ 3.11 when that guitar kicks in. That part always blew me away! new sub from the UK I hope your channel is successful x
This song has it all. And what really made the song even greater live was the addition of Mick Taylor on lead guitar. The Rolling Stones have never sounded as good live after Taylor.
So Mia, fun fact, Merry Clayton did the background on the original album. The Stones were in the US and needed a black background singer to give them the seasoning for this song. She showed up to the studio late at night around 2 am in pajamas and curlers. She knocked it out of the park. On their Live tour, Grammy award winner Lisa Fischer, sang the backup for them including this song. IMHO Lisa Fischer can hit the high notes better than Mariah Carey. She ranks up high as one of the best female vocalists despite having a short solo career. She preferred to sing backup and owned that space for over 30 years. You must react to her singing How can I Ease the pain live in Japan. An epic vocal performance. Also, watch 20 Feet From Stardom" a documentary on predominantly black backup singers that helped add the flavor to Rock songs, especially coming out of England. The English rock bands were influenced by blues but could not get the sound right without the black backup singers. Lisa and Merry are the big stars in this documentary. And you will hear about the background on the singing in this song, Gimme Shelter.
And it’s a British band! But the song, its themes were and are so rightly matches to what’s going on in America. The Stones are amazing, love the Rolling Stones.
The Rolling Stones. Background female voice Merry Clayton. There is a famous documentary that features Ms Clayton and her luck of even being part of the song (“20 feet from Stardom” is the name of the doc). I first heard the song sung by a cover band in Omaha NE in 1973 a terrific song. (Google Merry Clayton).
FACTS: This was the MOST MEANINGFUL SONG OF 1969. It earned zero Grammy Nominations. It was NOT a single for radio. It was just the greatest opening to an album of all tine. Let it Bleed 1969
Those Brits did a lot of stuff that was brilliant, back in the mid to late sixties. For something completely different, try She's Leaving Home (Beatles).
Welcome to the rabbit hole of "The Stones" . Check out "Brown Sugar", "Satisfaction", "Paint It Black", "Angie", "Miss You", and "Jumpin Jack Flash" for a start. There about a dozen more.
If you like guitar solos, I recommend searching UA-cam for Gimme Shelter live 1972. Mick Taylor did not play on the studio version, but his guitar is unreal on live versions.
I'm gonna enjoy watching you do down the rolling stones rabbit hole. Theh have so many hits. Glad you like them. Paint it black synpathy for the devil etc
They are great Live! A little fact ...Mick Jagger Sang on " State Of Shock " with Michael Jackson . Freddie Mercury was the original singer to accompany Michael, but it never got finished. There is a demo version of " State Of Shock " on UA-cam with Freddie and Michael singing.

@@DoIttMiaaaa ALWAYS gives Me Chills 😍👍 Love YOU 💕
I think you're lucky to have reacted to probably one of the best rock songs ever and the best version.
One of my favorite classic rock songs
Saw The Rolling Stones in 1972 with Stevie Wonder at the forum in LA when I was 15. So fortunate.
Miaa you are getting Started with The Rolling Stones iconic Legendary
Another classic and another great reaction!!!!!! The guitar was lethal!!!!
Excellent description Leon. Everything about this song especially the guitar is awesome. One of my all time favorite rock songs. Right up there with Born on the Bayou.
@@mysticwhiskey68 Yes Tim, the guitar lines were the heartbeat of rock
I remember when this song first came out. I recorded it off the radio onto a cassette tape. I just played at intro over and over. Wore out the rewind button on a couple of cassette recorders doing that.
You've heard the Stones many times you just didn't know it. The song "Start Me Up" is played at sporting events everywhere and several of their songs are used in movies/TV shows and commercials.
Search for their live song "Off the Hook" 1964 TAMI Show....llike right now.....!!!!
Exile on mainstreet and sticky fingers are my 2 favourite albums ever
This song was made during an era where Bands were making music, not to win an award, but to express a cause they believed in. Here of course a strong statement against the Vietnam war.
I know you appreciate great music when your face begins to change @ 3.11 when that guitar kicks in. That part always blew me away! new sub from the UK I hope your channel is successful x
This song has it all. And what really made the song even greater live was the addition of Mick Taylor on lead guitar. The Rolling Stones have never sounded as good live after Taylor.
I can’t remember the lead singers name but he definitely had the moves like Jagger.
Their best tune!
Great reaction Mia! "Doom and Gloom" "Honky Tonk Women" "Dead Flowers" "Hang Fire" are all great tunes. There are too many good Stones songs to list.
Dudes really love Southern music. Blues, Soul, Country, and Rock all in one band.
The last few years, Luther Vandross’ session singer Lisa Fischer has been singing this song live with the Stones.
I like the captions. That's a nice touch.
FACTS:
This was the MOST MEANINGFUL SONG OF 1969.
The Stones are one of the best R&R groups ever. Listen to AII of their songs, you’re ears will love you. P.S. Thank you for listening and not talking.
Merry Clayton was 20 yrs old when this was recorded in 1969.
The ULTIMATE 'Make Love Not War' song.
Welcome to the rabbit hole of "The Stones" . Check out "Brown Sugar", "Satisfaction", "Paint It Black", "Angie", "Miss You", and "Jumpin Jack Flash" for a start. There about a dozen more.
This song has an interesting vibe to it.
There is also the rolling stones movie ,gimme shelter
@paulr6881 I did not know that, but I'm definitely gonna check that out paul.
@@devildoc4257 Hey Doc, hope you're well.
@ShannonDBennett-xc6zv hey Shannon how you been? Hope all is well.
@@devildoc4257 I'm alright Doc.
I've been trying to limit my time on the phone. So, I've been getting some stuff done around the house.
I hope things are truly good for you.
Always glad to get a chance to say hi and hear from you.
All your Rolling stones questions will be answered in time. Enjoy the ride. 👍
