You are experiencing what millions felt back those days. I was in high school when Elvis hit the big time. None of us had ever seen anything like him. He had it all. Killer looks, Charismatic personality, a great sense of humar and most of all that beautiful, powerful singing voice. Every girl wanted him and every guy wanted to be him.

Elvis had more charisma in his pinky than most of us have in our entire body.
He was the very first singer to successfully blend Country, Blues and Gospel into a new genre and make it a major success and it goes to his roots in Memphis.
I highly, highly suggest you check out "Elvis And The Black Community".
He truly embraced all music and brought it to us.
He's been called a thief and culture vulture but he opened the door for fantastic artists such as Fats Domino, The Platters, Chuck Berry, Little Richard and everyone that followed

There were so many complaints about his 'movements' on his first appearance on the Ed Sullivan show that they only allowed him back on if he agreed to be shot from the waist up - and definitely no moving!

Sullivan originally turned him down & it took months for Sullivan to finally have him on. He began TV appearances on The Dorsey Bros. show in Jan of '56, he went on the the Milton Berle show (he also appeared on the WW II aircraft carrier the U.S,S, Hancock performing for the sailors); then on Steve Allen where he was in a tuxedo & sang Hound Dog to a real hound dog, which annoyed him immensely but he did what he had to do & did it nicely. Then finally in Sept & again in Oct '56 Sullivan said he could be on but showing from the waist up only. Then in Jan '57 he returned to Sullivan.

Cool historical fact about these two songs. They were the flip side of each other on a 45 rpm vinyl single and both reached #1 on both the Pop and R&B charts. Only artist or act to ever accomplish that to this day. Both songs spent 11 weeks at #1. It was the success of both Hound Dog and Don't Be cruel that started the King of Rock and Roll talk.

I think Elvis was only 21 when he performed " Hound Dog " on The Ed Sullivan Show . The crowd was going wild , they loved Elvis . Great backing Vocals from his band as well . people thought Elvis's moves were inappropriate at the time , if they could only see into the future Lol . Great 2 for 1 tonight Mia I enjoyed both songs ..... Another great reaction to the King , it can't get any better than this !! Thank You 🙂

I love watching young people today watch Elvis for the first time. Seeing how his magic still gets them. It's pretty awesome ❤️
He was a very lovely person and if you didn't know, he was very active in civil rights movement. Look it all up.
He loved the black community. He sang in a black Gospel choir when he was a teenager.
He also was very keen on blues music and he would remake a lot of Old Blue songs and turn them into rock & roll songs. And Gospel music too. His gospel music was so beautiful.
Also Whitney Houston's Mom was his backup singer.

Nice reaction! If you notice, when performing"Hound dog" he was full in the frame of the picture - but with "Don't be cruel" he was filmed from the waist up. He did the little "arm thing" at the end of the song to rattle the censors. The King - now and always.

You have a new fan in me, just suscribed. Elvis is my favorite and your reactions are so genuine, Elvis transcends all genres, old, young. Hard to believe he got a failing grade in high school in music and considered odd because of his hair, sideburns and loud clothing in school. Hard to believe in a short amount of time he became one of the best and popular entertainers of all time, women wanted him and men wanted to be like him.

Jane H commenting … There’s only one thing more beautiful than a young Elvis, & that’s an older Elvis. So many television viewers complained about the ‘suggestive’ ‘sensual’ ‘vulgar’ dance movements that young Elvis had become famous for, so he was censored from the waist down, & only televised from the waist up. He was such a sweetheart in the mid-late 50s, & fun of fun. He matured during his two years in the army in Germany & returned at the age of 24 & then went into movies, & made over 31 & was a huge Hollywood star. He sang & danced in most of those movies, & I remember being so excited when an Elvis movie came to local movie theatres here in New Zealand. There was always a very long line to get tickets & you had to get there really early or tickets would be sold out. I was around 15 when I became a big Elvis fan, & almost 60 years on, I’m still a big fan. Came to your channel to see Elvis Reactions & thoroughly enjoyed yours.

Fun reaction! In the 1950s, Elvis was doing something that hadn't been done before on a mass scale. It looks kind of goofy to us today, but he was blending talent and charisma along with his own need to move and bring this sound and style to the larger public. He is humble. He seems kind of embarrassed by all the attention. The backup singers here are the Jordanaires. The would also appear alongside Elvis in some of his movies.

Watch him 16 years later when he performs before an audience of 1.5 billion people in the Aloha from Hawaii concert. I was 14 when I watched it live and when Elvis walked out on stage I thought he was the coolest dude I’ve ever seen. Haven’t seen anybody cooler since, and then he began to sing! Mind blowing!

Excellent post. What black and white doesn't show is that Elvis had blue eyes that, at times, had a hint of violet. Also, seeing him in person he was even more handsome. I remember seeing him and I couldn't take my eyes off him. From his energy to his personality to his humor. Many don't know that Elvis' childhood was filled with bitter poverty. At times raised by a single mother. Elvis had severe health issues as a child. He stuttered. He wasn't good in school. He was shy. He watched his mother during her second pregnancy and then her depression when she miscarried. Elvis felt guilt that he lived and his brother (twin) died. The tragedy of Jessie Garon is that, depending on who you elect to believe, he might have had a blockage in his nose and throat and could have survived. That's not my opinion but others. Elvis was picked on as a child by others. Fortunately as the years progressed his confidence soared. He always knew he was different but now he started to believe...in himself. God gave Elvis many blessings and now, approximately 70 years later his talents remain. As I said to Rolling Stone Magazine in 1977 "Elvis was, is, and forever will be the greatest entertainer who ever lived". Take care and may God bless you always. Jeff Schrembs ElvisCollector.info

Notice the difference between the first song and the second. On his first appearance on the Ed Sullivan show, Elvis was show full body. In the second song when he appeared again on the Sullivan show he was shown only from the waste up. They thought that his hip shaking was too provocative, that's' why he was given the nickname Elvis the Pelvis.

Elvis Presley was in a sense... THE quintessential entertainer. More artists should study how he entertains. Many thought he was just for white folk until the truth was widely known that he was born from a poor environment. His twin brother unexpectedly died soon after birth. Elvis grew up with a mixture of poor folks and didn't wear shoes till he was 8 years old. Rags to riches story and an unexpected untimely death. He left his legacy so the world could enjoy his singing and acting skills. He didn't change music. Elvis changed the world.

You need to listen to Elvis favorite music to perform & that would be gospel. He did Peace in the valley on the Ed Sullivan show. What Ed said afterwards made many haters older generation change their mind about him. He wanted to send a message to people before he went into the military. He was drafted & told the authorities he wanted to be on the front lines like the other men & no special treatment. Not a single person who was around him ever said a bad thing about him. They all had nothing but very high regards & a very deep respect for the man.

Elvis doing "Hound Dog" was a cover originally done by Big Mama Thornton, a blues singer. Elvis had a lot of respect for Black music and singers. A lot of people thought he was Black. When he was on Ed Sullivan's show people got to see him. When Ed called him over, shook his hand and said, "This boy is one of the nicest experiences we have ever had on the show with a big name performer. He's very polite and courteous." Elvis always called Ed Sullivan mister and said, "Yes, sir" and "No, sir." When Ed Sullivan liked him America accepted him.
Elvis' musical back up group was the Jordanaires. They were originally a religious singing group. He brought them along because he enjoyed singing religious music when not performing or rehearsing.
