The whole wet/dry thing, stereo (w/d/w) or mono was begun back in the 60s with the Gibbs Reverb unit, integrated into amps like those sold under the Guild marque. The Gibb Droll Bassman clone also incorporated the Gibbs circuit more recently in exactly the same way as the 60s Guild amps. The Gibbs unit is essentially a discrete power amplifier with a spring reverb effect, its own output transformer and speaker, integral to the amp combo. The reverb-only speaker can be miked separately.
It’s basically the perfect tool for this. Consistent, matching tone on both wet sends while still being able to emulate “amp” tone beyond just “cab” tone so it keeps up with your dry amp? Yes please. Strymon killed it on this one.

Ok. So I’m a newbie when it comes to pedals. Only been playing with them for about 2 years. And only in the past 4 months have I started investing in real worthwhile pedals. (For understanding, I pretty much had a boss delay, a tc HOF That I only played one mode on, and a compressor I got off Amazon). So my understanding of mono v stereo is very primitive. Pretty much nonexistent. But watching this video has opened up a bit of understanding. And it’s making me want to rebuild my pedalboard. Lol.
Really enjoyed this video, Mark. It’s given me some inspiration to get back to a wet/dry rig myself. One thing I need to sort out is still having an easy setup for band rehearsals when I’m lazy and don’t want to drag around a second amp. Or, do I look for an Iridium like you’ve done. Gotta love when inspiration invokes better questions than you had prior to. Good job on the video and the channel as a whole.
The Iridium is such a massive win for rigs like this for 2 reasons. 1. It just sounds great in "round" mode for wet effects that sit behind a dry amp. This is a big deal because you don't need to additionally "push" another cab sim harder to keep up with your main amp 2. It's just so versatile. If you don't want a full WDW you can leave the amp at home and run stereo with the Iridium and your wet effects dialed back a little bit further. Or if you can't even run stereo you can flip the switch on the Iridium to sum it to mono. Or bypass it entirely and just run through it out to your mono (or stereo) amp(s).
My Friedman pt20 sounds just fine running my dry effects through the front of the amp and my wet effects through the loop and it's easy to carry around. If I feel froggy I have two other tube amps to do the wet dry wet thing through my aby but that's a lot like work. Sounds good either way. Friedman has a killer effects loop. Cool video though.

Just bought an iridium for simplicity and playing with headphones at home so that’s sick. But I feel like all of this would be so much simpler with an axe FX and literally get the same effect in the house mix.
A wet/dry rig is a game changer... I still love good old fashioned tube amps so I run a top hat king royale (dry) and a 74 super reverb head wet. Multiple amps is addicting but wet/dry/wet is a little past me

Thanks for doing this, I’m new to this stuff and so this helped a lot. At the point of watching this I had already watched your more recent DSP demo and so am going with the Pinstripe audio MBFR. I do ultimately want to run stereo wet modulation and time based in parallel so I guess I would need a second MBFR for that.
What about using Interfacer's tuner out for Dry Amp signal, and stereo outs for Wet Amps? Have you tried that? Or you want to use mute function on specifically on Dry?
Wet / Dry / Wet sounds great. I split my signal between a Fender Princeton, Vox AC30, and Marshall DSL40C. I run the vox dirty and use that as my "dry center" amp. I keep the other two clean as a left and right with the Strymon BigSky & Timeline. It sounds AMAZING. By the way, I just use a traditional split and have no problems with ground loops. I totally expected a ground loop, but it didn't happen. Now if I include one of my cheaper (Crate/Peavey) solid-state amps in the split, it absolutely hums like crazy. This year I switched over to Kemper, and I have to say that the Kemper is a dream to play/record on. I use it almost exclusively now, BUT it doesn't let me do wet / dry / wet without re-amping later. I miss that so much. It might be time to let my amps go and get another Kemper, lol.
A non lose-your-amps solution would probably be to use the Kemper for your dry amps and to just get an HX Stomp for your wet amps... save a couple grand of something silly.
I have a Digitech RPM-1 Rack unit under my board it has stereo in which I just use a splitter to run my guitar in and it has 3 outs so it is a wet Dry Wet it is a Leslie simulator and uses a 3 button foot switch to control it. The left right outs are run into stereo pedals and out to fender amps and the center out hooks up my mono pedals then to a larger fender amp. How did you record the amps, microphones, or something else.
I'm always confused as to why Iridium users run their effects in front of the amp sim, especially in setups like this. Why not put the wet effects post amp and get the full frequency range of the effect in the FOH?
For the same reasons you would or would not use an effects loop. Sometimes you want post-amp full frequency range effects and sometimes you want the feel of a reverb hitting the front of a fender amp and compressing a little. Depends on what you are going for.
I do like the overall sound but those Distortion artifacts are kind of driving me crazy what I mean is every time I sit down to record when they pop up I do everything I can to get rid of them ...sorry if I am being a killjoy
This was amazing...... I think I’m gonna try to do this with my HX stomp and Fender Bass breaker 15. Gotta get one of those interface splitter things though. Dry to my bass breaker and then wet to the stomp run it in stereo.
The great thing about this is that it’s all interchangeable. Bass breaker in place of Vinny works great. Stomp vs Iridium is the same. Like I said in the video; the only super necessary thing is to make sure you have isolated signal lines, grounds, and phase inversion. And I seriously love the Goodwood audio InterfacerTX for this. They’ve got it nailed.

What if i dont have interfacer? Can i just use any stereo pedal, the first output goes to as dry channel, and the other goes to another wet stereo pedal? Wdyt?
I have used a stereo pedal in a bypass state for that kind of thing in the past for a Wet Dry rig but it's important to use something with isolated outputs to help deal with grounding issues and noise in your signal chain. I don't know enough about audio to know WHY that's important but I know that cutting corners because it works at home is an easy way to run into irreconcilable problems in a live environment
Yeah, typically I am either monitoring this with my KRK monitors (as seen in the video) or IEMs live. I would probably cut down to stereo or just a mono amp depending on the place I am playing and their tech capacity.
Hey brotha, You'll need a TRS to TS/TS Cable, also referred to as "Y insert cables"... EBS has some pretty great flat patch cables available on Sweetwater or Reverb. Rockboard is another option that is pretty easily accessible!
Bit late to this party but, could you run your dry amp without being Miced, if it went into a Suhr or Boss TAE and then into something like the ADA8200
I’ve got an iridium I run with a cabzeus in a wet dry setup. Any tips on how to do a wet dry wet with this? I run my dirt in front of iridium then one side out to cabzeus and other side into delays and reverbs then into other side of cabzeus.
Well the cabzeus and the iridium both have cabinets so the easiest way to build a wet dry wet rig with those two would be dirt and the splitting your signal with one side to the iridium for dry and then the other to your wet pedals and the cabzeus. Then monitor them all with your interface or mixer or whatever. But I think you’re gonna run into issues trying to monitor 3 input signals if you are trying to use the headphone jack on one of your pedals.
I like the lo-fi feel of delays going through the power tubes. It sounds more like a vintage tape-echo that way Totally clean delays sound sterile to me, like a guitar DI with guitar rig vst effects I mean maybe this sound works for meditation music or something. It's just not my thing
Same. The iridium maybe not be the perfect fender amp (obviously) but having that extra color and grit added to the trails of my delay and reverb makes it feel more “connected” to my dry tone.
Hey, how did you hook up the Apollo to the 3 channnels? Was is the mic’d amp via a DI box to the Hi-Z input and the iridium (output at line level) into the line inputs at the back linked?
Mark, I notice you are not using any type of loop switcher in your rig. I see you are only using the Morningstar / MIDI controller to change presets etc. I'm curious why you are not using a switcher, such as GigRig2 or GigRig3 with MIDI? I currently use the Selah Effects Quartz V3 Midi controller / Midi clock but considering converting to GigRig3 with the idea of getting cleaner signal. I'm guessing there is a personal preference / good reaosn why you have chosen not to go down that route. I would love to hear your thoughts on the topic. THX
The Morningstar stuff works great for me; I’ve got the mc3, 6mkii, and the 8. I like that I don’t have to content with wiring to a switcher for every pedal and I can just integrate whatever midi controller I need / have room for. I do have an ML5 but I typically don’t keep rigs together long enough to need to implement it all the way. Lastly, such a major portion of my rig is all midi capable that the need to control loops like that doesn’t feel like a necessity.
If you need a multi engine delay I fully recommend the echo system. If you just want stereo tape delay I haven’t found anything better than the volante

How are the Iridium and Benson being connected to your interface for recording? Do you need 3 input channels? (Left and right channel from Iridium, single mono channel from the mic'ed up Benson)
I don't typically comment on stuff, but I must say, that last bit got me to. I assume this is used in some kind of church music context? Regardless.. While this certainly isn't new, I gotta say you've executed it super well... I no longer play in that "scene/genre", but I wish more players could have the capability, or understanding to do what you've done. I can't tell you how many times I hear that genre of music, and it just sounds like a sonic blur... You could never tell who's playing what, and why it just sounds like mush. Good for you. Keep doing what you're doing, please.
This is largely used in my home studio context. I play in a church occasionally but I haven’t really made any of my gear choices or stylistic choices based on that scene or style in years. I totally get what you mean about the blur, though. I enjoyed really washing out my signal when it felt like I wasn’t wildly happy with my dry tone but as I have found that more and more I find that being able to parse out some clarity without having to sacrifice all the texture and drama that comes from a huge wet rig.
Mark Johnston Mark Johnston way cool. Are there any specifics on mono vs stereo pedals in this kind of setup? I see that you have the mood. I have almost every chase bliss pedal that i currently use in a studio type fashion - typically just one running at a time, but i’m now curious about how you’ve used other mono pedals. Does the interfacer just take care of all of that?

Oh man. My gear collection has been a slowly building thing for years and years so it’s hard to nail down what this rig cost me. I imagine that if I were buying everything in this set up brand new it would be a couple grand. But you could set up stereo wet fake amps like the iridium + a decent dry amp (maybe the blues junior) for under 700 total and then build out a simple stereo rig for around the same price. I should do a video on a budget WDW rig.
Other cool option that I use for WET/DRY/WET is the ORANGE rocker 32 which is stereo so can either use that for BOTH of your WET amps (literally both speakers are getting different signal) and then use other amp for dry, or you can split the ORANGE to be half WET and half DRY by only running your return back to the right input. You can also use HX EFX or Helix to do a lot of the splitting

I’m so confused. I always thought a WDW is three amps, two wet and one dry but in this set up I only see two amps. The Benson and the Iridium. Where is the 3rd amp in this setup? It sounds amazing but I’m just confused a little. I understand stereo amp setups just not understanding this all the way.
The iridium is a stereo amp sim; so the idea is that the iridium represents a stereo set of fender amps handling the wet channels with the benson in mono in the middle.
Mark Johnston got it! Ok that makes sense. Now with the Iridium, that’s going straight to a DI box then to the board (Live situation)/audio interface of your computer (studio situation)?

I tend to adjust my rig week to week depending on what I’m playing and where I’m going. However, if I had this wet dry wet set up at a space that couldn’t accommodate I could easily just dial the wet effects back a little and run a stereo rig with the iridium as my amp. Or, if I couldn’t even get that much I could set the iridium to “sum to mono” and just run straight to the Vinny as a mono rig.

So the PAs are usually just enough channels for the house to play music through, and 2-3 vocal mics. Do you know of a way I could do at least a wet/dry rig with one amp and cab? Yep. The Vinny has a line level out that could go straight to a cab sim as well so you could technically run a proper WDW rig with no cabs or mics while still using a proper tube amp.
Technically only one amp. I am sending 3 different signals; 1 mono dry guitar with the Benson Vinny Amp and 2 stereo channels with my delay and reverbs, made to sound like they've gone through an amp with the Strymon Iridium.
Great video! One thing I’m curious about is phase relationship between the Benson (dry) and the Iridium. The Iridium being digital, it introduces a bit of latency that could create phase problems with the all analog signal path of the Benson. Did you notice this issue?
I emphasize the importance of a phase switch on your junction box in the video for the exact reason that you are going to need to chase down phase problems with analog amps OR digital set ups. The amount of latency being theoretically introduced by a digital pedal is so minimal that you would be chasing down the same issues with mic placement between your amps if you used a properly analog rig.
Nope. Never ever. Dislike the all-in-one modelers for a variety of reasons. I dislike the menu diving and workflow. I like the delay and reverb algos far less than what I use in my rig. I like my drives more than the stock “here’s a digital tube screamer” options. No helix, no HX stomp etc.
Mark Johnston - Presume your not playing live ? The effects in the FM are better than any of the strymon or eventide effects I’ve had and are easier to programme Horses for corses ! 🤪
Used this set up live several times, it really is about the same amount of work as bringing a large multi except I’m also bringing the Vinny; an amp that only weighs a few pounds. I’m sure the effects sound great in every single one of those multi rigs, but I find no inspiration in any of them and I can’t stress enough how much the menu diving alone would keep me from ever playing again.

atmosvere sadly no, it is 100% doable you just need an interfacer like he has. And good monitors to hear it out of.
Isnt there any latency when you're hooked up to both an amp and the Iridium?
No, I’ve never experienced any latency with any outboard gear I’ve ever used.

What if i dont have interfacer? Can i just use any stereo pedal, the first output goes to as dry channel, and the other goes to another wet stereo pedal? Wdyt?
I have used a stereo pedal in a bypass state for that kind of thing in the past for a Wet Dry rig but it's important to use something with isolated outputs to help deal with grounding issues and noise in your signal chain. I don't know enough about audio to know WHY that's important but I know that cutting corners because it works at home is an easy way to run into irreconcilable problems in a live environment

Yeah, typically I am either monitoring this with my KRK monitors (as seen in the video) or IEMs live. I would probably cut down to stereo or just a mono amp depending on the place I am playing and their tech capacity.

Hey brotha, You'll need a TRS to TS/TS Cable, also referred to as "Y insert cables"... EBS has some pretty great flat patch cables available on Sweetwater or Reverb. Rockboard is another option that is pretty easily accessible!
Bit late to this party but, could you run your dry amp without being Miced, if it went into a Suhr or Boss TAE and then into something like the ADA8200

I’ve got an iridium I run with a cabzeus in a wet dry setup. Any tips on how to do a wet dry wet with this? I run my dirt in front of iridium then one side out to cabzeus and other side into delays and reverbs then into other side of cabzeus.
Well the cabzeus and the iridium both have cabinets so the easiest way to build a wet dry wet rig with those two would be dirt and the splitting your signal with one side to the iridium for dry and then the other to your wet pedals and the cabzeus. Then monitor them all with your interface or mixer or whatever. But I think you’re gonna run into issues trying to monitor 3 input signals if you are trying to use the headphone jack on one of your pedals.
Could you achieve the same with something like the Xotic X-Blender?
So, you are using both the speaker out AND the instrument out in the Vinny which gets turned into stereo and eventually hits your iridium?
The audio split happens before the Vinny; the dry signal goes from the volume pedal to the Vinny AND the wet effects in parallel.
Mark Johnston do you think making the split happen out of the Vinny would work? Or do you think it’d have ground issues?
I like the lo-fi feel of delays going through the power tubes. It sounds more like a vintage tape-echo that way

Same. The iridium maybe not be the perfect fender amp (obviously) but having that extra color and grit added to the trails of my delay and reverb makes it feel more “connected” to my dry tone.

Mark, I notice you are not using any type of loop switcher in your rig. I see you are only using the Morningstar / MIDI controller to change presets etc. I'm curious why you are not using a switcher, such as GigRig2 or GigRig3 with MIDI? I currently use the Selah Effects Quartz V3 Midi controller / Midi clock but considering converting to GigRig3 with the idea of getting cleaner signal. I'm guessing there is a personal preference / good reaosn why you have chosen not to go down that route. I would love to hear your thoughts on the topic. THX
The Morningstar stuff works great for me; I’ve got the mc3, 6mkii, and the 8. I like that I don’t have to content with wiring to a switcher for every pedal and I can just integrate whatever midi controller I need / have room for. I do have an ML5 but I typically don’t keep rigs together long enough to need to implement it all the way. Lastly, such a major portion of my rig is all midi capable that the need to control loops like that doesn’t feel like a necessity.
Just sold old Timeline. Recommend echosystem over a new Timeline? If so, why? I have an H9 and a Tempus.
If you need a multi engine delay I fully recommend the echo system. If you just want stereo tape delay I haven’t found anything better than the volante

How are the Iridium and Benson being connected to your interface for recording? Do you need 3 input channels? (Left and right channel from Iridium, single mono channel from the mic'ed up Benson)

I assume this is used in some kind of church music context? Regardless.. While this certainly isn't new, I gotta say you've executed it super well... I no longer play in that "scene/genre", but I wish more players could have the capability, or understanding to do what you've done. I can't tell you how many times I hear that genre of music, and it just sounds like a sonic blur... You could never tell who's playing what, and why it just sounds like mush. Good for you. Keep doing what you're doing, please.
This is largely used in my home studio context. I play in a church occasionally but I haven’t really made any of my gear choices or stylistic choices based on that scene or style in years.
I totally get what you mean about the blur, though. I enjoyed really washing out my signal when it felt like I wasn’t wildly happy with my dry tone but as I have found that more and more I find that being able to parse out some clarity without having to sacrifice all the texture and drama that comes from a huge wet rig.

I have almost every chase bliss pedal that i currently use in a studio type fashion - typically just one running at a time, but i’m now curious about how you’ve used other mono pedals. Does the interfacer just take care of all of that?

Oh man. My gear collection has been a slowly building thing for years and years so it’s hard to nail down what this rig cost me. I imagine that if I were buying everything in this set up brand new it would be a couple grand. But you could set up stereo wet fake amps like the iridium + a decent dry amp (maybe the blues junior) for under 700 total and then build out a simple stereo rig for around the same price. I should do a video on a budget WDW rig.
Other cool option that I use for WET/DRY/WET is the ORANGE rocker 32 which is stereo so can either use that for BOTH of your WET amps (literally both speakers are getting different signal) and then use other amp for dry, or you can split the ORANGE to be half WET and half DRY by only running your return back to the right input. You can also use HX EFX or Helix to do a lot of the splitting

The Iridium alllows stereo input and output using stereo TRS cables. Only one amp/cab model, but your left and right are amped separately.
I’m so confused. I always thought a WDW is three amps, two wet and one dry but in this set up I only see two amps. The Benson and the Iridium. Where is the 3rd amp in this setup? It sounds amazing but I’m just confused a little. I understand stereo amp setups just not understanding this all the way.
The iridium is a stereo amp sim; so the idea is that the iridium represents a stereo set of fender amps handling the wet channels with the benson in mono in the middle.

@@marshallcarr Exactly. Amp is mic'd up and the Iridium is direct in. But, if you are using multiple amps you can bypass the Iridium and use it's outputs to send to stereo real amps.

Also, can you use two different sounding amps at the same time with the Iridium? Say left output is “Fender-y” amp and the right side output is “Vox-y” style amp?

The tuner out and the main output are both just paths that send your signal like an ABY splitter.
what happens if you play a show that has a terrible pa or no pa?
I tend to adjust my rig week to week depending on what I’m playing and where I’m going. However, if I had this wet dry wet set up at a space that couldn’t accommodate I could easily just dial the wet effects back a little and run a stereo rig with the iridium as my amp. Or, if I couldn’t even get that much I could set the iridium to “sum to mono” and just run straight to the Vinny as a mono rig.
Mark Johnston oh ok. I’m asking because I’m looking doing this. Lol. I just got into this indie/folk/pop band and have been told there’s house shows. So the PAs are usually just enough channels for the house to play music through, and 2-3 vocal mics.

@@wheresallthezombies You could do a wet/dry with the rig I am using here. I'm only sending 3 because I can but it's built to be able to easily switch between 1-3 sends and the 2 send can be wet/dry or stereo.

So you’re using your amplifier and cab as the dry and the iridium in place of stereo cabs? I guess you’d just run the outs of the iridium to front of house stereo track? So you could essentially run wdw with 1 amp and cab?

Yep. The Vinny has a line level out that could go straight to a cab sim as well so you could technically run a proper WDW rig with no cabs or mics while still using a proper tube amp.

Technically only one amp. I am sending 3 different signals; 1 mono dry guitar with the Benson Vinny Amp and 2 stereo channels with my delay and reverbs, made to sound like they've gone through an amp with the Strymon Iridium.

Great video! One thing I’m curious about is phase relationship between the Benson (dry) and the Iridium. The Iridium being digital, it introduces a bit of latency that could create phase problems with the all analog signal path of the Benson. Did you notice this issue?
I emphasize the importance of a phase switch on your junction box in the video for the exact reason that you are going to need to chase down phase problems with analog amps OR digital set ups. The amount of latency being theoretically introduced by a digital pedal is so minimal that you would be chasing down the same issues with mic placement between your amps if you used a properly analog rig.
Mark Johnston yes, good point with the mic placement. Plus the wet sound being very wet, I suppose it mitigates it.
@@19Cluj I use a radial twin city ABY and it takes care of phase and ground lift issues and it has an isolated transformer. It's pretty affordable to.

Nope. Never ever. Dislike the all-in-one modelers for a variety of reasons. I dislike the menu diving and workflow. I like the delay and reverb algos far less than what I use in my rig. I like my drives more than the stock “here’s a digital tube screamer” options. No helix, no HX stomp etc.

Used this set up live several times, it really is about the same amount of work as bringing a large multi except I’m also bringing the Vinny; an amp that only weighs a few pounds. I’m sure the effects sound great in every single one of those multi rigs, but I find no inspiration in any of them and I can’t stress enough how much the menu diving alone would keep me from ever playing again.
