- There are a lot of good reasons to run wet/dry or wet/dry/wet. Want better clarity on your dry guitar but don't want to lose those lush reverbs? Does Front of House or your studio engineer want to balance your clean guitar and delay separately from one another? Running Wet/Dry(/Wet) can solve for a myriad of problems and create better flexibility. However, dragging three amps and dealing with complex signal routing can feel like more trouble than it's worth. So lets take a look at some of the easiest and simplest ways to get from mono or stereo to Wet/Dry and Wet/Dry/Wet with only one amp sim and JUST your pedalboard. It doesn't get much easier than this.

Living in Germany I have better odds finding a more-or-less local dealer for the Walrus Canvas than the Pinstripe pedals.

I have the same pedalboard and I like how you’ve mounted your pedals 😂. I know the thumb screws can be too short for some pedals with feet.
Good showcase of another WDW setup, I’ve been trying something similar with a DSM Simplifier (classic)

Another good option is the Radial Key Largo - you can do wet/dry/wet or parallel mixing of up to three stereo signal paths, along with a master effects send if you want to glue everything together with a reverb or some compression. The difference is only 2 xlr outs, so you have to do your own mixing.
Ok, so much yes! One question. If you had a stereo modulation in the signal chain, would you put that first in the stereo chain before delay and reverb, or just opt for mono modulation and put it before acs 1 to have it on both dry and wet signal?
I pre-ordered my pinstripe last week after seeing it in your chain. Seems to be more efficient than having to reamp later. Such cool ideas, gear, music and tones you are bringing to us! (Edit:after watching this I will be adding a MISO to the purchase order)

Holy shit. Doing a Wet/dry has always sounded like it'd be magical, but a pain in my ass that I didn't feel like tackling. As a fellow ACS1 user that has a Diso+, this looks like it'll be incredible and super easy. I also have the XLR sum and the 1/4 sum, so worst case scenario in a live setting if I only have one slot available on the board, I can sum it all and be good to go without having to re-patch anything anyways.

Very cool. Only compromise here is that the wet effects are running post amp/cab emulations, which wouldn’t be my personal preference, but sounds great nonetheless.

Ok hold up. If you own an Apollo twin you don’t need to buy another UA device. For way less you can buy any number of input devices that have an ADAT output and can link to the Apollo for cheap. I use the Behringer ada8200 but I don’t recommend it. The preamps are.. fine. But Behringer as a company deeply sucks and supporting them isn’t the move. A little bit of googling will find you an option that will get you 10+ inputs to your twin for cheap.

So how does one incorporate modulation effects into the chain? Some go pre and some go post. Specifically the Mobius comes to mind. Would you be putting it in the dry chain or the wet chain and/or can it exist in both chains somehow?
Great sound, but through how many speakers are we listening to, or is all direct? If direct, the question still holds, how many speakers are we hearing on youtube if any at all? My apologies if i missed your explanation regarding the final audio YT output devices.
I'm thinking of using a similar setup, though with a Kingsley Juggler Preamp into a Seymour Duncan Powerstage (2 cabinet outputs for the wet left/wet right duty), and using my Victory Duchess amp for everything else. The Kingsley sounds so beautiful (classic Dumble) I'm just worried about having a balanced sound signature. Perhaps a video Mark, for those of us using different amp/speaker setups, for the wet/dry or wet/dry/wet setup (which sounds so appealing), and how we can begin to attain a balanced sound signature with three speakers. The only thing i can come up with, if it's way off, is to put a bit of the dry channel/amp dirt into the wet amps/channels to help amalgamate the sound character of three different speakers. Geesh, and i just thought about the phasing issues that may arise.
Wet Dry Wet is the future Meets the past of guitar tone. I’ve been running WDW the last month at church and we’ve all been super happy
The past. The present. The future. WDW can be a pain in the ass to always have dialed in if you change rigs a lot but it's always worth doing the leg work for it and doing this video actually helped me work out how much not complicated it *needs* to be.
Hi Mark, are you using the standard DISO+ or the one with polarity reversal since you're using different amp models in the left and right channels of the ACS1...or is the polarity reversal only necessary when using 2 different amp pedals like the Ruby and Dream at the same time? BTW, I have to say you guitar tone seems more like an actual amp using the ACS1 than a lot of your more recent videos using the Ruby and Dream combo. Those UA pedals have a glassiness (for lack of a better term) to my ears that make them sound less authentic than the ACS1. I had the Dream, but just wasn't feeling it and sold it. I love my ACS1, especially since the updates.

Hey, I think this video was very helpfull. And I may buy the Diso+ because of you showcasing it here. But how do you think having El cap and big sky after your ampsim colours your sound.. would it somehow be possible to have it before useing some kind of splitter after the drives and have a volym controll for the wet side? And run that dryside out an amp. please let me know what you think. I’m yet a Idiot on wet dry setups😂
Love it! 👌🏻 I assume you are using a -1-4-inch-trs-to-dual-1-4-inch-ts cable out of the Pinstripe into the DAW. Is that correct?

An idea I’m waiting to clarify with Strymon doing this with the Mobius to introduce modulation into a rig like this. It’s using a splitter before the Mobius and a parallel mixer for the Timeline and BigSky. So it’s a very similar w/d/w rig to the one in this video. It should work w/d as well. Goes something like this:
1) the left OUT of the Mobius just goes into the IN of the dry path (this puts the Mobius pre just by placement)
2) the right OUT of the Mobius goes into the IN of the first pedal of the wet path (this puts the Mobius physically in the wet post path)
3) left OUT of splitter into the Mobius left IN
4) right OUT of splitter into the Mobius right IN
5) flip the rear switch to pre/post on the back of the Mobius
I’m not 100% sure yet but if the Mobius seperates the pre/post routing this way this may be a good solution.

Mark, if I couldn’t spare the change for a mono line isolator, would a radial DI I have laying around be ok for the dry signal in wet/dry/wet config
What about phase? Do you encounter that and how do you solve it? I've set up my UA Dream 65 and Walrus Canvas Stereo like this and I have phase issues.

It looks like I might be able to try WDW through my Focusrite 4i4 if the Pinstripe will support the line level into the 3rd non gain input, however, if I want to record WDW, might I just as easily record just WD and duplicate the wet channel in my DAW for panning? Or am I missing something here?
Hey Howard! The DISO+ outputs whatever level you send into it. If you want to record stereo FX, it might work out better to send your Dry signal into input 3 or 4 and the stereo FX into 1 and 2 because of gain staging/noise. You certainly could just record W/D, duplicate W and pan the FX channels, but it may not sound as stereo-y as you might want it to. It would certainly be worth experimenting with. Best regards!

It's mostly just cloud and plate. medium to high diffusion, low tone, bass, decay, mic to taste. super easy.
You should have a look at the Lehle Pedal Boxes from Germany. That is best engineering practice.
Would you say you need Diso plus if you i a Neve 1073 that will bring back the gain loss going from tone x to radial DI? My logic is that I would give more warmth to my guitar sound going through a 1073. What are you thoughts? Thank you for your time. 👍🏾
I run my guitars out of a line isolator in situations like this but I still run them to a 1073 for character and not just for signal loss

I play worship music, usually has 3 drive stages, a clean chorus, a drive chorus, super washed out ambient, a delay, and a big drive lead with octave.

Would you recommend going WDW? If so would this give me a cleaner more full tone?
It’s always up to personal preference. But if you have a decent FOH guy I pretty much always find they’re happier to have independent control over the dry signal. I am pretty pro WDW whenever it’s an option
The eternal debate - stereo, wet/dry, or wet/dry/wet. Studio vs. gigging vs. budget vs. size/weight of pedalboard vs. loss of productivity for endless tinkering.
Can I do this with only 2 amps and not direct in?
Man I'm thinking of doing this to my board, my chain would be whatever for dry then volante and bigsky for wet.
However, in which point do you think I should apply kill dry? I mean if I kill dry on volante, the attack note will be without reverb. (As it's not being sent to reverb)
If I kill dry on Big sky, all the attack of the repeats note from volante will gone.
I'm really struggling with this issue.

The only way to keep both thing I can image is, do a parallel, one put another bigsky after dry, and the other bigsky go after the second chain after volante.
Link those 2 bigsky with midi, so that they always syncronized.
wait im confused, is this W/D/W? You have two amp sims going in to what i assume is two channels on an interface? Isnt this just stereo?. I get that the signal has split the dry chain but isnt it still being summed to stereo?
The first section showcases wet / dry with two inputs coming from two “amps” (the left snd right amp channels in the acs1) but at 15 minutes we change our configuration to stereo wet effects and add an input. From there on out it’s 3 channels coming from two “amps” to the interface. One amp sends a mono dry signal and the other amp sends to stereo wet effects. 3 channel wet dry wet.
Could you create a wet/dry rig using only the DSM Humboldt Simplifier?

yes! I've built my pedalboard based on Simplifier to do WDW. The Stereo 100% wet signal goes to my audio monitors (Boss MD500 for modulation + Source Audio Collider for Delays and Reverbs running in parallel through an internal mixer of my looper switcher Musicomlab EFX LE) and the Dry signal goes to my amp+cab (4 cable method to feed the wet effects with the signal of the preamp).
Hi Mark/Anyone...how about if you want to use a tube amp without an FX loop for a W/D/W for live use (not recording) and in a small venue. If you're ultimate output for the wets is through a stereo power amp (solid state) and guitar cabs, do you need a reactive load or is a direct/iso box a more effective compact/pedalboard friendly solution?
I'm new to all this fancy-fied wet/dry business myself but I'll share what I know in hopes of clarifying the situation for you. The speaker cabs put a load on your amplifier head. If you are using speaker cabs then you don't need any reactive load device. If you're amplifier is not being loaded down by a cab then you need to use some kind of reactive load box or you could damage your amp. Hope this helps.

I recently purchased a Suhr Iso Line Out and have my tube amps running trough it with the line out going to my fractal rig and on to two seymour duncan powerstage 200s....the amp is loaded by a speaker cab. For the case where I don't want the "dry" path, I use a fractal reactive load (LB-2).

Depends on your context. In a live context you’re gonna need to convert to XLR to get to FOH.
You're really running W+D/D and W+D/D/W+D. Your wet isn't 100% wet. You've still got dry mixed in with your wet signal(s) on both setups. It sounds terrific, but that's not the full benefit of the W/D and W/D/W setup.
For my wet to be 100% wet I would need my reverb and my delay in parallel. Having them both (or even just the delay) at 100% wet would cause an awkward amount of pre delay on the reverb and / or loss my repeats in a full wet reverb.
@@markjohnstonofficial I see what you're saying. I still do it 100% wet... so yes, my stereo effects are in series.. delay -> modulation -> reverb, which sounds very natural to me. The key (for me) is to get the dry blended in perfectly.
Why dont you use the iridium?
Because UA Amps > ACS1 > Iridium
Will there be any phase out issues while going stereo xlr output to direct into PA system (without using any amps)?
