Sometimes they will allow a little contact, but if you blatantly touch the ref (shove, put your hands around them, etc.) then its a automatic ejection. Most of the time the ref is actually considered a live player on the field

Thanks for posting this. I wasn't able to see it real-time and I had a parlay bust because of it when Pittman was tossed. Looks like Duggar absolutely dominated Pittman at the line on that run block, and then it got messy when Pittman was trying to pull himself back into position and Duggar hands go to the facemask. I put most of the responsibility on the NFL for this one, though. The refs let the game get violent for the show. That's messed up in a league where violence is already a focus. Duggar and Pittman were both trying to do their job. Pittman got beat badly on the play and could use some time in the weight room maybe. Probably took his failure in the run block personally, too, but Duggar holding onto Pittman's helmet as he proceeded downfield back toward the action wasn't reasonable. The refs weren't doing their job, if that job is to keep the game within the rules. Had they protected the player (Pittman), Duggar would have been penalized for the helmet under his arm twisting Pittman's neck. Even still, it was Pittman getting dominated that started the whole chain. Van Noy escalated everything, but I don't see how TY doesn't get ejected for the shove, either. Even heat of the moment, the NFL should have protected the refs there. And the refs should have protected the players. This didn't need to happen if everyone was doing their job on the officiating crew. What a mess.
