    This video was created with the support of the U.S. Office of Research Integrity: ori.hhs.gov.
    The International Space Station is roughly the size of a six-bedroom house and weighs more than 320 cars -- it's so large that no single rocket could have lifted it into orbit. Instead, it was assembled piece by piece while hurtling through space at 28,000 kilometers per hour, lapping the Earth once every 90 minutes. Tien Nguyen explains how.

    The World needs more collaboration like that. Less nuclear rockets - more international space exploration

      +BENKO A lot of the old ICBM's are being turned into rockets for space. So there you go!

    • @metronom3
      @metronom3 8 років тому +8

      +BENKO you do realise it's the advent of no nuclear weapons that has made space exploration really difficult as the stable plutonium needed as nuclear fuel is no longer manufactured because of no new nukes????
      Ironic that our most destructive technology is also needed for our most peaceful.

      ***** well, that escalated quickly.
      While I recognize the immorality of forceful seizure of money from the populous, I also recognize the ISS truly is a great scientific achievement of humanity; but most of all, I recognize those two are not mutually exclusive.
      The ISS is a marvel of human scientific achievement, something like that wasn't even concievable 100 years ago, and the experiments done there will be crucial in humanity's quest for truth & exploration.
      But like ***** posted, scientific achievement is not a justification for immorality, but that does not explain why immorality happen in the first place. Even without the ISS, the government will still burden the people with unfair methods in order to fund itself.
      But its also unfair to solely blame the government for these problems, the people also bear some responsibility for indirectly allowing it to happen, also the budget is not solely used to cover the government's interests, it's also used for the people's. If fact, do you know the greatest expenditure of U.S. national budget goes to care for the elderly?
      In other words, the immorality is the responsibility of the government and the people, not the ISS.

      +danfg do they send soldiers? or police officers? Or how do they force you to pay through violence? And also: Taxes are useful if spend right? The state needs money to provide education, security, cleaning, maintaining and repairing streets etc etc. And of course to keep science and culture alive.

    • @Stabacs
      @Stabacs 8 років тому +5

      +danfg but the point is: why should I? It is stupid to not pay taxes. At least in a good state. Not the USA, I guess. As they use it for more war efforts instead of education or environment protection improvement, right?

    • @Stabacs
      @Stabacs 8 років тому +1

      +danfg In my opinion the greed of people combined with free market economy is the problem of imbalance in money distribution. But this would lead into a long conversation about capitalism critique etc, and I wanna stick to the topic.
      Taxes have to be used the right way. Then they are actually helping with quality of life. The best example are countries like sweden and norway. As far as I know they have rather high taxes but also a very high standard of living.
      Also, there is a contradiction in you arguments. You say taxes are the reason of poverty. But without taxes there is no money for the state to do something against poverty. Like providing education, good infrastructures (for the economy), science fundings (that help after all the economy as well) etc.
      Also I don´t see how scientists are "morally corrupted" when they take money from the state. In my opinion they are more morally corrupted when they take money from Coca Cola, L'oreal or McDonald´s.
      Your argumentation seems to come from an individualistic point of view, but I think that discussions about taxes have to come from a point of view that has the well being of the society, mankind and the particular state in mind.
      But you are definitely right that taxes have to be used in a good way and there are enough examples in probably every state where some money goes into the wrong projects or pockets.

    Columbia's final mission (STS-107) did NOT visit the International Space Station nor was it even carrying a compatible docking port. The final flight was to test a new science module called SpaceHAB (in its cargo bay) in Low Earth Orbit over 16 days. You can read all about it in Columbia Accident Investigation Board Report available at NASA's website.

  • @antonsmith
    @antonsmith 2 роки тому +1

    STS-107 carried the SPACEHAB Double Research Module on its inaugural flight, the Freestar experiment (mounted on a Hitchhiker Program rack), and the Extended Duration Orbiter pallet. SPACEHAB was first flown on STS-57.
    One of the experiments, a video taken to study atmospheric dust, may have detected a new atmospheric phenomenon, dubbed a "TIGER" (Transient Ionospheric Glow Emission in Red).
    On board Columbia was a copy of a drawing by Petr Ginz, the editor-in-chief of the magazine Vedem, who depicted what he imagined the Earth looked like from the Moon when he was a 14-year-old prisoner in the Terezín concentration camp. The copy was in the possession of Ilan Ramon and was lost in the disintegration. Ramon also traveled with a dollar bill received from the Lubavitcher Rebbe.
    An Australian experiment, conducted by students from Glen Waverley Secondary College, was designed to test the reaction of zero gravity on the web formation of the Australian garden orb weaver spider. Columbia never docked with the ISS! Stop lying!

    I once spotted an unusually bright moving object in the night sky, so I immediately checked the ISS position, and it turned out it was in fact the ISS. Watching it until from the beginning until it disappeared on the horizon was the best thing ever.
