If you want to dress up or you’re into fashion, this guide is nice. If not, don’t worry about it, people wear everything here. When coming to NYC be you and comfortable. There is a lot of walking, about 3-5 miles a day. I wear regular street clothes and running shoes(except winter), almost everyone else does as well. When going out at night or dressing up, bringing shoes to change into (as Sarah said) is helpful

Gotta agree. I’ve been to NYC 7 times, and am heading that way again in a few months. I really don’t care if I look like a NY’er.

I'm 40 years a NYer, artist and sportwear designer. We wear whatever is comfortable to walk miles of concrete at any given moment. Yes, running shoes are ideal. The way I know a tourist is by their effort to be fashionable, often over function...yeah, those fashion shoes and trench coats are dead give aways. But that said, visitors are welcome in whatever they're wearing.. they bless our town with their presence, help us see it with new eyes, and remind us that we're lucky to live here.

You summed up September perfectly because that was the weather I had when I went to NYC early last month! The weather in September was absolutely perfect. With all the walking you do in NYC, one tip I will share too is to also wear a very good pair of socks especially when wearing sneakers. When I do a lot of walking even in a city, I will wear hiking socks to help reduce the chances of getting blisters on my feet. This is a great guide!

I live here in NYC. For winter I wear thermal underwear (under my clothes) and a down coat, which is perfect. You stay warm and the down coat is light weight, which makes it easy to carry if you get too warm. When your walking around, doing stairs and that sun comes out 😬you tend to warm up quick. Especially in the subway

I wear work boots all the time. Working. Fishing etc. I like wearing short sleeve shirts and shorts all the time. Late fall, Early Winter oh well have to wear pants and a vest and a coat. Hats I have to wear my NY RANGERS Hat.
When it comes to the weather it varies very fast. Cold and snowy in the winter to hot and humid to a Severe Thunderstorm in the Spring Summer and early Fall.

Allbirds are a great shoe for anyone to wear, too - super comfortable, eco friendly, and you don’t have to worry about the running shoe look since so many people have them. Layering’s a must for any travel and you can never go wrong with black basics. Note for summertime: the heat and humidity make nearly every part of NYC smell like pee and trash. Yay!

Sarah has a video link below ”how to dress for winter”, which goes over mid Nov-Feb. I live here in NYC and I would recommend an umbrella, a down coat and thermal underwear for under your clothes. The down coat is perfect because it’s light weight, which makes it easy to carry if you get too warm. When your walking around, doing stairs and the sun comes out 😬 you tend to warm up fast. Especially in the subway. Also don’t forget to check the weather in the morning before going out, it’s always changing!

@@shareced7651 that’s the absolute best thing about living in NYC, at the end of the day there are NO rules for how to dress or who to be ❤️ just be comfortable in whatever that is for you!
