The coldest I've ever been was January in a New York snowstorm. The wind howling down those avenues meant the wind chill was incredible. I remember they had some winter event in Central Park with a snowmaking machine which ironically they had to close due to the snow.
We just went to NYC last week and everything you mention is exactly what we brought. Your tips have helped us and we had an amazing time (including the first snow of the year)

I remembered Winters in Brooklyn when I was growing up. Those got really cold especially in February. I remembered some really big blizzards in February when I was young.
What I wear usually when it is cold is vest, Jacket, Neoprene gloves. My Rangers Hat , Jeans, Tube socks , And Boots.
I wish I knew about the boots a few years ago! I was the Californian tourist who wore regular boots and paid for it by nearly slipping and falling into a puddle near a crosswalk 😅 not to mention all the slippery ice during the winter
Speaking as someone who has lived in Toronto and in Chicago you nailed it Jon. This is how someone who comes from a tropical climate can survive a NYC winter.
Speaking as a Canadian frost giant, I can say that both of you nailed it. I would only add a few points. A good way to keep hands warm is to wear an inner glove and an outer mitt. The outer mitt acts as a wind block and traps heat. Also, if the outer mitt has a closure around the wrist, this can help to trap heat. Something else to look for in a coat or outer shell is a drawstring at the bottom to keep the cold air from rising up into your chest and also keeping heat in. Some longer coats also have a drawstring in the middle, just above your waist, to also restrict internal air movement and keep cold air from passing through your coat (and thus drawing out heat).
Instead of a scarf, a smaller and lighter item is a balaclava. Usually, they have an opening that is large enough to expose your face if you want but they can also be worn so that they cover your face only leaving your eyes exposed. They have to be long enough to extend down to cover your throat but even so, they are a lot lighter than a scarf and can usually just be pulled off and stuffed into packet.
At any rate, these are minor points and they are only suggestions. What you documented is good and would even work in Canada.

We love winter in NYC and we can’t wait to be back hopefully next Christmas. Your video brought back some great memories of us leaving Melbiurne, Australia just after Christmas and the weather was 38 degrees Celsius (100F) and when we landed at Newark it was 4degrees Celsius (39F). I remembered one of your earlier videos when you said how important layers were and you were spot on! I wore jeans, boots, a jumper, scarf and a jacket the whole time and it was perfect! Keep up the great work!
We flew into NYC in January of few years ago. My jacket was packed in my bag as we where coming from Summer. Our bags did not end up on the plane from Los Angeles to NYC and so we only had the clothes that we had on for almost 24 hours and it was very cold. From then on I always carry my jacket with me.
I always carry my jacket with me on a plane if I'm flying to a cold place -- I always think about the possibility of lost luggage and also have one complete set of clean clothes in my carryon also, and a toothbrush -- just in case my luggage gets lost or delayed.
It's a pain but it makes all the difference being prepared for the cold so you aren't miserable the whole time you're out. Good video.

We're having a rare snow day "down south" but your clip jogged memories of a lifetime of suffering in NYC in extreme winter weather. Layering is indeed key and taking the bus / train is always a challenge since I've got a strict "no coats" policy while riding in a moving vehicle. I've "misplaced" so many scarves and gloves!
Yes! We were hammered with an ice storm yesterday. The trees looked like they were out of picturebook the way everything was coated in Ice. Gotta love southern winter storms! ❄️

Every winter jacket I buy must have a hood. It is so easy to just pull it over your head whenever it gets really cold. This week with unbearably icy cold weather I start layering as if I'm going skiing. Thermal underwear, waterproof ski pants, sweaters and my North Face Down jacket with insulated hood keeps me toasty warm!

Perfect video! As an Alaskan I have a great tolerance for the cold but it's always great to get a local's perspective! I was shocked December was so warm when I was visiting! In the 50's! Absolutely wild 😂 but still, I might be back sometime when there's actual cold so essential viewing! I actually had to do that trick with the jacket like you suggested! It was so warm in New York but it was below zero back home so I needed to bring my good heavy one 😂 and water proof boots are an everyday staple here for many people. So I got that covered!
I live on the coast in Wales so no stranger to wet/cold weather. Did a photography trip to Edinburgh around Christmas and it was roughly 4c to -3c while I was out. I wore good boots, decent walking socks, generic combat trousers, a moderately thick hoodie, gloves which I never needed, a Fjallraven wool hat and Helly Hansen marine jacket. Was toasty warm the whole time. I think the only time I noticed it was cool was when I stopped late evening when it was minus Celsius temps and sat down for 20 mins to give my feet a break.
I like that both you and Adriana talked about what to wear to stay warm.
Sarah Funky did a similar video but I wish Louie would talk about what he wears to stay warm too.

I grew up in upstate NY so I wear shorts until about 5 degrees. My girlfriend grew up in Texas and she is freezing when it is 50. I actually love the cold but not the snow. Another Great video!

I visited NYC February 29th -March 7th 2020, I am from the Cayman islands (next to Jamaica and under Cuba) and it's normally 80F. I showed up in jeans and a T-shirt with nikes and it was 19F with wind chill. That was the coldest temperature I was ever in and it was REAAALLLY COOLLD 🥶.
My flight arrived at 1 Am so i wasnt able to check into my AirB&B so i ended up waiting at a McDonald next to Penn Station and found some l really good NYC Local friends in that very McDonald's. I found a little Shop and managed to get a hat, gloves and a jacket that I still have to this day. I loved every cold day in NYC on that vacation and I can't wait to go back!!!

Hi Jon and Adriana. A couple years ago, I went to a Pro Hockey Shop here in Montreal, and bought professional base layer clothing, (top and bottoms) to go under my outer layer. They were the best thing I have bought yet. I have a Pioneer Canada jacket that is light, but it is also very warm, and repels snow and rain well, it stays dry in major snow or rain fall. I also have MANY pairs of boots, but also, I have varied socks. For those heavy winter days, I have thick thermal socks I only wear when needed. For nominal days, I have wool socks, then down to my regular every day Adidas socks for everyday wear. Depending on the conditions outside I change up my foot wear. When I go visit friends here in town, I usually pack in my back pack, a heavy pair of indoor socks, my friend knitted for me, that I wear when I take off my outside shoes, because of snow, water and annoying grit from the sidewalks. With the Pro Base Layer, I can wear whatever I want out of my wardrobe, unless of course there is a blizzard outside, then I go whole hog on the gear. (incidentally, tonight we are expecting 25+ cm of snow to fall through Monday night).

Leather gloves lined with polar fleece are the best thing, they keep your hands warm, look good and you can still use your fingers
November in NYC is plenty cold enough for this Texan! But I followed Jon's advice and brought my heavy coat with me on the plane (wore it), despite coming from Houston, TX. I'm glad I had my sock cap to wear when taking the Staten Island ferry in late November. I also kept my KN95 on while walking the streets....it kept my face warm! I may brave a true NYC Winter someday....though sidebar I have been to St. Petersburg, Russia in March, with ice floes still in the Neva River....I had a heavy wool coat, layered with a sweater under that, and a flannel shirt & t-shirt under THAT and still the wind knifed through and chilled me....brr! And I know the misery of wearing sneakers in snowy conditions and getting them wet...made that mistake during my student years in Germany and got sick and laid up in Weimar, Germany with cold for about a week. Definitely wore my waterproof leather boots from that point foward.

The best item I bring to New York for chilly to cold weather are UNIQLO thin, with collar, packable down jackets. They are more like sweaters. I wear them under my coat. T They weigh nothing and take up very little space. If there is any chance of rain or snow, I do bring my waterproof booties. Very important because when it rains a lot, there is standing water some places that have to path to walk around. Keeping feet dry is very important to me. ----- And of course, decent gloves and hat goes without saying. The good news is that if you forget something, there are lots of stores to buy those items - if you have to.
I'm team Adriana! Coming to NY this Sunday all the way from warm Costa Rica. No idea what to expect but I think I'm prepared. 😅

I wear as little as possible up until it gets windy. Usually just a heavy jacket and jeans is my go to. Depends on how you deal with the cold.

Best strategy is to dress in flexible layers. Get goretex shell for wind and rain protection. Use fleece jacket under shell for warm insulation. Combine with t-shirt or long sleeve. This is good down to -10C. Below that temperature, wear heavy parka with your choice of indoor clothing.
Visitors will frequently transit indoor and outdoors, so flexibility accommodates for sweat and temperature shifts.
Also, use gloves with clip attachments to keep them together and hang from your jacket when not in use. Bring large backpack to hold unused items.
If you're travelling in from a warmer climate, use parka at all times outdoors. But everyone is different.
For head protection, wear toque hat up to -10c. Below that, use Balaklava. I just use belaklavas all the time as they are easy to stuff into a large coat pocket. Oh, did o mention lots of coat pockets?
When I visited New York in December I bought my heavy coat thinking it would be freezing. People were walking around, covered from head to toe. It was 48°. I was so hot. Next time I'll know to bring a medium jacket.
Thank you for the video! I feel so stupid I can’t believe I never put my scarf on my head the way Adriana does! Scarves always get so caught in my long hair. It’s a clever trick. I love UA-cam, you learn so much fro, great channels like yours - it’s the little things that add up to make days/life better.
The problem is it can be very cold one day and only moderately cold the next day. If you are traveling you don’t have room to pack several different jackets of varying heaviness. NYC is not as consistently ultra cold like Upstate and Canada.

Since we don't have heaters in Mexico (at least in my home lol) at the beginning, I forgot it was cold outside, and I should run outside without my sweater. Now I remember the inside is warm, but outside is not lol

Layers, layers and layers - you can always take them off, but if you don't have them it will ruin your day.
But as already mentioned in this video, a good set of boots are almost mandatory unless you want to have soggy cold feet for the rest of the day.
I spent quite a bit of time in Toronto before moving to NYC and all I can say is 'layers and boots'. This is coming from an expat New Zealander.

Winter in New York sounds like early Spring weather. In Saskatchewan, we can get -50 with windchill some days. Especially in December, January and February. Which sucks when you are waiting for a bus. Most of the time it's around -15 to -20, though. Pretty much have to bundle up with everything, leggings, jeans, parka, scarf, extra scarf for around the face, earmuffs, ski mitts, toque. I even throw in some of those toe warmers into my boots in temperatures like that because my toes feel numb after walking in the cold for twenty minutes or so.
Saskatchewan here as well... Few people in the world outside of Alaska and Siberia experience extreme cold as we do.

I lived in England and the coldest it got where I was , it got to minus 15 degrees Celsius and I used to wear numerous layers of clothing,yep taking it off and on was a pain.👍
I live in nys up near the border, we have lots of tricks for staying warm. I walk a lot and you gotta be tough, lol. I layer I also use the hot packs in my gloves when it's brutal.
Your vid’s are super informative and really get to the questions I guess everyone asks lol. We’re comin up for the first time next week and for me being a southern boy from the ATL I’m exited. We live in key west now so it’s gonna be friggin cold as hell and we don’t have a lot ( any lol )of these wardrobe choices as the norm around here is shorts n flip flops. So my question is with the weather situation Christmas week looks to be cold n dry for the most part if there’s no snow or heavy rain will tennis shoes do for the 5 days we’re there?

In my ten years in NYC I find thin mitten to be plenty enough 80 percent of the time.
Layering is not the only way. I'd go for good boots, like the Sorel or UGGs (of the same model): gum cover to keep water away, and sheepskin for the rest.
First time i came to NYC i had gore-tex boots and at the end of a very heavy rainy day they weren't waterproof any longer - that's how bad it is.
Fir jackets I'd go for sheepskin (if extremely cold and windy) or ghoosedown.

Here in the Jura mountains of France the temperature goes down to -16°C (3,2 °F)!….and we’re not that cold if we don’t have any fog…. A pair of stockings, a nice little dress, leather boots, a woolen coat…and that’s it….somme kids event wear shorts and t-shirts in the playground !…

The winters of recent in NYC are mild compared to when i was growing up here over 50 yrs ago..temperatures were way colder, more frequent snow piled high and all that goes with it, slush puddles etc etc. Very good video presentation with requisite clothing options to stay warm and protected from the elements. Okay so. We did pack exactly what you are suggesting in this video (without even knowing) but then we were in NYC for one of the warmest weeks of December and January this year. But still.. we were prepared just in case 😂
One winter I went to the Chinese Lantern Festival at Snug Harbor it was 10 degrees Fahrenheit probably colder with the wind chill, I'm always cold however I wasn't this time, we were at the festival for hours, I wore a tank top, thermal underwear long johns, jeans, pull over sweater, sweater coat, fur (fake) jacket, thermal knee high socks, hat, gloves, scarf and somehow I could still move don't know how but I could

I'm in Edmonton, Alberta. We just got out of a record breaking cold snap, last Monday. We had an extended period of time where it was in the -20s, in Celsius. It also got into the -30s, in Celsius, at night, for some of that time. We had broke a record last set in 1969. I have an Eddie Bauer down filled winter jacket, which is rated to -40 degrees Celsius, which is 40 degrees Fahrenheit. I got it at a Boxing week sale, for half the regular price, around 2 years ago. In Canada, we have Boxing Day, the day after Christmas. I also dress in layers. That helps. Also, I have Sorel winter boots, which are waterproof, and rated to -40 degrees Celsius, or -40 degrees Fahrenheit. Good soles are helpful for ice. Furthermore, I buy exothermic hand and feet warmers for my gloves, mittens and boots. Thanks for sharing this video. Cheers! ✌️

I came to NYC for new year’s and I really wanted to experience the cold. I didn’t wear a coat or jacket not one day and I’m from Louisiana. It’s hot and muggy here. The days I spent in NY were pretty similar

Jon I know about the cold since I live in Chicago. I sometimes where 4 layers of clothing where there’s the polar vortex. Uniqlo has the parka that I can put into my backpack when I travel.
I grew up in Chicago as well and totally agree. It can be COLD! We actually just filmed a video in Chicago around Christmas though and it was surprisingly warm (T-shirt weather) downtown. It was such an unexpected and pleasant surprise!
loved the video mannn, please make a video about park slope. i live right here on the cornor of the park near the nighthawk movie theather and i would love to see a video about our little part of brooklyn, also a great tip to warm up when you outside is to go to one of the many delis and buy either a hot tea or hot coffe. it will cost you 1-2 dollars per cup and warms you all the way. inside to out

February, this year.. your guess is as good as mine.. We got married February 2nd, 2019. Was COLD.. 2 days later was 60 degrees haha. But normally cold.
February here in N.Y. is generally cold with good possibility of snow. Pack layers, warm socks and waterproof winter boots. Nothing worse than walking around with cold hands and feet. Hope you have a great time.

I'm headed up for a quick couple of days for an appointment next month and was wondering what I would need to bring. I'm thinking my LL Bean boots will be the go-to footwear of choice. Gotta get me some of those glove/mittens that Adriana has, I *hate* gloves but my hands get so, so cold without them!

@@HereBeBarr I am here now. The winter weather is not as bad as I thought it would be, but I would love a subway guide. I’m staying on the Midtown east side, and me and my brother got completely confused on the subway. We went to the lower east side earlier to see the statue and got on the subway to go back to the hotel and it took us the complete wrong way. So I subway guide would be very nice.
I am so jelous here in kentuky you freez because there is so much wilderness .. there is no stores to warm up when I go Ice Skating i have to drive an hour in the wilderness my car is warm but I am slways cautious is something happens there isno gas stayions in between ir stores nothing until ypu get to the city. I also walk outfoors wirh my dog by my house he likes to get out so much… thank you for the video your red coat is pretty by the way!
