As an Aussie, I also found EARMUFFS were a must, as my ears ached from the freezing temperatures. Also boots that had a NON SLIP TREAD to deal with the snow on New York footpaths.❄️🌫️☃️🌬️
You also need to consider when you're in New York that you're probably going to go in and out of a lot of warm overcrowded stores. I recommend layers that you can easily take off while in stores so you're not dying when trying to shop.
My husband and I went to NY in December and your videos helped a lot with the planning, thank you! We met a lady from Florida who didn't own a coat. She was walking around with a giant scarf. Coming from a cold place myself, it was just unimaginable to me how you can't own a coat! Anyway, she used the next day to get one. Nice souvenir from NY :-D
My first time in NY was mid October and although it was not freezing yet, it was much colder than back at home (I lived in south Texas-like weather), so I had to buy a coat cause I hadn't pack one. It was a nice souvenir indeed, and it lasted like 10 years. The worst thing here is that it was a school trip, and the teachers organizing had no idea what the weather would be like (mind you, this was long before videos like this were popular).
The moment you wrote miles into kms, you instantly won a like from me! Unlike most of North American UA-camrs, you have taken into consideration the rest of the world!!
Don’t worry we don’t even get snow anymore and it’s always forty. I remember being a kid and we’d be -10 degrees and snow feet deep it looked so good and it was awesome. Now we get like sleet and 32 degrees and then the next day it’s 50 and everything melts. We haven’t had a storm since 2014. We haven’t seen a foot of since around then too.
OMG, this is so totally helpful. I was in NYC through November '19, and just at the end of the first week, it dropped to 35 then stayed under 32 for days on end. I was dying. I was not ready for it. Expected it to be 40-50f and I was just plain miserable. Thank you so much.
Thanks, Sarah! Your videos really show how thoughtful you've been about your content for the viewers and they are EXTREMELY helpful. Can't say this enough. THANK YOU!!!
You hit the nail on the head Sarah. I see so many people just so unprepared for the weather and I guess they don't know any better because they're not from here. But a little research does go a long way.
Will be travelling to NYC with family this Xmas for the first time and this video was exactly what we needed as we are from a much warmer climate. Grew up with a Melbourne (VIC, Australia) Winter but it does not get this cold (from memory). Have been to London, UK during winter and I assume a NYC winter is quite alike…
I think the other thing that happens at NYC in the winter - not a lot of sun. Its either cloudy or sun is low in the sky and buildings create longer shadows. 40F in NYC feels so much colder than 40F back at home. But my home has sunny winters (in between storms) and I think that makes a difference.
I was in NYC in mid of novemver and used only polo and light autumn jacket and i was enough. This is good to visit Siberia(-10C or less). NYC is warm, but little vindy. An my partner says that you have nice cap
Hey Sarah, thank you so much for the information. Wish I had seen this video before I moved to NY. I’m from the tropical part of the world and it would get really hard in winter cuz no matter what I would wear I’d be cold. It took time to learn all this. I can say for sure if anyone coming to NY for the first time this video is all you need to know and you will be able to enjoy your stay. Thanks again Sarah, Merry Christmas!!
Eh, I live here and I freeze my but off. Just wear three layers. A shirt, sweater, and a thick winter coat. Wear thick comfy pants and thick socks and comfortable shoes. The shoes are important.
This is great! My grandparents are taking me to NYC as an early high school graduation gift and we’re going in October! I live in Texas and don’t own any coats 🤠🤠
I cannot agree with you more. I work for the FDNY EMS and layering is key in the city. The best part is that if you get to hot just remove a layer. I personally when working wear up to 4 layers. All thin of course. Anyway layering is key.
Mid November 2004, I was on the open top of a tour bus in NYC at night. It was raining on and off, practically sleeting. I was the only one up there enjoying the solitude and views. Stayed up till near the end of the trip where it started to rain quite heavily and I realised being sat there, my finger tips and toes were starting to get cold. Even with the thick socks and gloves on. So I came down to the lower deck where it was warm. So I waited till the bus was stuck in traffic on 5th Ave going south with Central Park on my right. Got to the bottom of the stairs and the whole bus began to clap and applaud. This was quite confusing to me so I glanced at the driver who said that he had been joking with the other passengers about how long I would brave being up there and no one expected me to last as long as I had. Minor celebrity for 15 seconds moment on a bus!
@@SarahFunky I was a great trip, I prefer the colder weather. There's something very special about walking across the Brooklyn bridge as the sun goes down in cold weather. Far fewer people.
I’m from Cincinnati so I know about layers but I’ve never really adhered to that we have similar weather here in the winter time to where the kids might be out of school for a month because of black ice!!!!!
I'm from Hawaii and I've never lived anywhere else. I'm visiting NYC this Thanksgiving and I'm terrified. I'm a tropical fish-- I have a 10°F tolerance from 70. Thank you for making this video because I have no idea how to dress warmly.
@@SarahFunky Hey I like u could u give some advice on an apartment. I'm planning to move to Rutherford NJ. I'm currently unemployed I have a job offer with Amazon. Brand new subscriber here! ❤️😁 Travelling to Chicago for Christmas, so same cold weather as NYC...20-30's°F walking around in it. Yes to thermals and those extra warm socks! 🥶❤️😁❄️⛄🎅🏻🎄May you have a blessed Christmas holiday.
We went to New York 4 years ago where We met my brother and his wife from Germany we walked every day 10 miles by the 6th day I had the biggest blister on the bottom of my foot. Lol. And I was wearing tennis shoes. We were from November 28 to December 6 - 2016. It rained a lot.
Yes~! Today was a typical spring day~i'm traveling here and i was expecting a cold snowy day~but so far~.. it's been not too cold~! Wanna see snow~ before I go back to Korea~:(
Great video Sarah, I am sure weather will get worst than today and we will need your suggestions. Today, felt like it was spring...super extra warm day!
Awesome video, but that outfit is missing one vital part for really cold weather: You need a warm scarf... The turtleneck ain't enough, it would let the cold it. You might also want to wrap the scarf around your mouth and nose to protect your (beautiful ;-) ) face from the bitter cold and warm up the air you breathe. Take care!
Great video thank you so much for the tips you look so beautiful in that outfit! I'm going on December for my daughter bday she has never been there both teenagers. Do you have recommendations on where I can get some boots for them outfits ? And how cold does it get ? We are going in the beginning.
Can anyone please tell me the brand of her hat? I want the exact one. The hat she linked in her blog is a Furtalk brand. I don’t think this furtalk. Thank you
