Just hope this proves even more that animation is not only a viable option for future fantasy adaptions, but actually a better one than live action.
I think all it needs is for the western audience to learn animation isnt for kids.
Most media I consume is animated from anime, to cartoons and boy ohhh boy, if fantasy adaptation were more Castlevania than half a billion LoTR, the world would be at peace

Jinx's child voice actor needs an Oscar and lifetime supply of chocolate chip cookies and free lifetime pass to Disneyland. The way she cries in third episode sent shivers down my spine.
She managed to stand out in a show that has fantastic voice acting over all.
That scene was legit some of the most raw and genuine voice acting I’ve ever heard. So easy to forget she was only acting. And to think Powder’s VA is only 16 years old.
I hate to be that guy, but you mean an Emmy. The girl deserves an Emmy. Oscars are for movies

The lifelike movement of the characters was mind-blowing. The scene where Jinx is listening to "get jinxed" is just so shocking at how lifelike her movements are. As someone who studied animation I'm still speechless over how perfect it is.
I love how people are really beginning to embrace animation for adult shows. It's such a good medium for storytelling and you have a lot more room for action sequences that don't bankrupt you.
Yea, I don't think a lot of people understood just how effective the medium is at telling a story.
Full-heartedly agree with everything you said in the video. It's a shame that I keep hearing of people avoiding it because the hype is too much or because it's animated. I recommend it to everyone I can.

Arcane truly is a love letter from the creators to their fans. I was incredibly hyped beforehand, expectations high and even then they blew my mind. If you know more about the characters and lore behind the game (since it's not really in the game) there are a lot of easter egg and foreshadow moments, which are just amazing, similarly though if you don't know anything about the story it might even be a more impressive journey to watch.

Spoilers:
The moment you speak of, between Ekko and Jinx absolutely blew my mind, it is just so good, like art brought to live! Knowing the lore of these characters, there are some amazing things that have yet to happen, and I'm very curious as to how they will portray it, since the lore we got is mostly just short bits of text. But stealing from the nice way you put it, some characters have yet to level up!
A sidenote to that, if you do a rewatch of this show, look closely at the colors of the Powder/Jinx and Vi's eyes, they change a lot on purpose, they become blue-ish when they are 'on their level-up path', you see it when powder holds the hextech crystal for example. For Jinx I knew they had to eventually turn purplish, since that's what they are in-game. The moment in episode 3 for example, where she cries in the arms of Silco, when he says 'we'll show them all' you see her one open eye and due to the light and the crying, it's more purpleish, forshadowing what's to come.
I loved every minute of Arcane, the way some things are foreshadowed, and mirrored ahhhhhhh, the two bridge scenes and the music, chef's kiss man. Favourite characters are Viktor, and Silco. Ray Chen's music made me cry, so beautiful
Love Arcane. Fav characters by far are Vi and Ekko. League has so many different worlds they can explore in the future. Can't wait for season 2!
You touched upon something that I'm surprised a lot of "Book Nerds" don't understand. When they don't like a certain character in a book or a movie they immediately label that character as a 'bad character' and author an 'idiot'. But what they don't realize is that it takes a good author for you to make a character despicable. It's a win for author if you hate a character they specifically wrote to be bad.
Seems obvious right? Human nature is sometimes surprising.
There is also a way to ruin a character.

I loved Vi before starting the show and she definitely remained my favourite. I would love if Arcane's success meant more high-quality animated adaptations, because I think so much of fantasy is perfect for that medium. It was really fun to listen to you talk about the show and this really made me want to rewatch it.
Speaking on Episode 1, I absolutely believe it was intentional. It lures you with this familiarity and sense of safety. Like "Oh okay, I've seen this before I get it" only to be absolutely CRUSHED on Episode 3, and realize nothing is going to be the same.
I dont think there is a single person who watched the show and got to episode 3 and wasnt like "Oh SHIT"

The original songs Riot commissioned for "Arcane" are astounding and they evoke MORE emotion on re-watch when you know what the song is enhancing. I can't view the scene with "Our Love" or the simple "Goodbye" w/o spouting tears.
btw, this is the first screenplay by the writers...
As a league of legends fan, I was blown away by how well they designed this show.

I loved how much menace they manage to get the red eyed villain to have without actually having them commit violence.

OoF, Jayce is my favorite character. Tells so much about how well they made the characters.
Also, I am a big League LORE fan, and I know how much better they did Jayce in ARCANE than in the official lore.
I really was blown away by the animation on this show, when Stormlight gets an eventual adaptation this art/animation style would be PERFECT
The fact that i knew exactly who the “random lady” was😂😂spot on.
I thought that the details in the micro expressions in the characters facial expressions is what set them apart from other animation. Those facial expressions help to connect the viewers to these characters like old friends who don't need to say a word and you know what's on their mind.
As someone who has never played the game this was made from, it was a great introduction. The show was fantastic, love it! Thanks for the review. My favorite character is Vi, gotta love the good guy or gal!
Wonderful review, Elle! I've said this for years and I will say this again, animation should be an option for fantasy books adaptation rather than having everything be live action (and most of the time failing at it). Also, I LOVE Arcane. This show practically exhibits that a video game being adapted to show could be amazing!
OK, I generally hate cartoons but I really like this. I was blown away. I think I saw you playing violin in the 5th episode. I did not think I would like this at all but it was great. Loved it.
I can't remember what channel it was on but it was a season breakdown of the WOT. You said you'd take an animated version like Arcane. It's the one reason I'm watching Arcane. And I agree. WOT animated like this with most importantly great dialogue

I have been with Sanderson about not having Stormlight as animated but this level of animation would do it justice.
The show is excellent, I can't wait for season 2! The fight between Ekko and Jinx on the bridge was amazing. I would say Ekko is my favorite character and Viktor is intriguing as well. I am most interested to see what happens with them but they are all fleshed out and feel real, even the ones I hate. Which is good that they aren't one dimensional but are complicated and sometimes you can see where they are coming from and why they do the things they do and then still hate them at other points
I’ve been hoping you would post something about the show! This show is phenomenal in pretty much every way. I completely agree about the moral greyness of the characters. I love disliking them, rooting for them and understanding them throughout the series.
I do think it is fair to say this is some kind of the next Games of throne, in the sense that it made something people has always avoided cause they believed it wouldn't work. And that is to make this kind of story, with this kind of style, in this medium, as a series. With a big budget, and high standards in every department.
I am so happy they had the chance to make this as it is, with their characteristic paint brush look, 3D animation mixed with 2D effects, fights with a mv beat and rhythm to it, real good music, and, more importantly, as a series. This could easily have been a movie, like Spiderverse. And people would have loved it too. But it needed to be a series to really tell the whole story. And money usually is hardly put into something like this, cause they don't believe it will sell as good. Hopefully, after seeing the hit this has been, things change, and we could get more things like this as a series instead of a movie, or a video game. (I am really hoping they will do an Overwatch series in the near future, cause it has the potential to be something as good as this, just a different kind of story).
I also know they are doing a series of another huge video game, Kingdom Hearts. And as far as a know is in 3D too, for Disney+. I have my fingers crossed the quality (not the look, cause they have a different style) is as good as this one. But we'll see.
My favorite character is Jayce. He gets way too much unnecessary hatred .
And I really think people didn’t get his character at all. The writing behind his character is great. Granted I wouldn’t say it’s the best but it’s great nonetheless.

Yeah, I can easily agree it's a great watch - I probably enjoyed this more than new Witcher season. I think that the greatest achievement of this show is that it was able to effortlessly pull in people that have never heard of the game behind it and that it was able to stand on it's own merits - something that DOTA: Dragon's Blood (show from a game company, based on similar game) couldn't do. It's really an easy recommendation, I actually re-subscribed to Netflix to watch it.
I agree, although Dota was pretty good once you got round to it..
I do like arcane and LoR stories in general. But the Witcher adaptation isn't for me, I love the books too much.
I don't think DOTA had the same budget and animation plus the episodes are 20 mins each, so I don't think it's entirely fair to compare the two
@@chrishaven1489 Not like Valve is lacking money - comparison sounds fair to me given the purpose of those two series; and it’s not like Dota show is completely terrible, quite the opposite really, but it wasn’t perfect on its own merits, in isolation, due to inherent flaws to story structure and pacing and this can’t be easily deflected
@@gurentgc3546 Personally I find Witcher books overrated, once I realised how much rose tinted glasses I had for reading them back in middle school 20ish years ago - they were however pretty early to gritty fantasy scene here in Poland and I can still appreciate that

The intertwined elements of magic, science and combat fit well with the story about an ensuing conflict and distinct differences between an undercity and a topside. I'm curious as to how Heimerdinger would play out his role with his decision to go to the undercity. My favourite character is Caitlyn because of her character development and how she gets a grasp of how deep the filth and corruption of the system in the divide runs. Great show! 10 out of 10 stars! 🤟🤓

The Legend of Galactic Heroes has been my favorite animated show of all time my entire life. I never thought there would ever be anything that would match it. It was the 10/10 show in my mind that I compared every other animated show to. But Arcane blew it out of the water. I will have to recalibrate the way I think about rating shows, because everything just got knocked down a peg. xD
My fav characters were jinx and victor. jinx's descent into madness was beautifully structured. We saw how victor conflicted with his own morales. Such good character development from a video game adaptation is a first for me.

I've got a 4k LG OLED TV and arcane looks glorious on it. Definitely worth a rewatch just for the visuals alone. Also if you like this show, you should play dishonoured 2.
As someone who knows nothing about LoL, I only wish Netflix had chosen a less spoilery thumbnail.

Okay, I'm not a big fan of animation, especially for fantasy adaptations. But after all the talk about this I sat down and binge watched the whole show today (thanks, Covid!). And my god, if this wasn't one incredible show. Love it, can't wait to see future seasons.
Something that I think they did and I think was on purpose and amazing is that in the first 3 episodes they used character tropes to establish what we thought about different people without needing to spend a lot of time on the characters. They used the time they put in really well to fill them out with their unique characteristics but we already felt like we knew some of them just by their place in the story. Then they turned it on its head in a lot of areas.
Viktor is my favorite character, he is not perfect but I love his character

While I agree with everything in here, there’s no way I’d watch this show with my kid around, older kids? Yes. But younger kids? Absolutely not some of the stuff in the show freaked me out and I’m 26

Ekko has a voice line in the game where he says, "I had a crush… until you started talking to the gun." Just to put all of this in perspective.

What a great review! SPOILERS below:
After the first three episodes a twitter post asked viewers to choose: Viktor or Jayce. I picked Jayce and the final vote with 20k plus votes was just about 50-50. I completely understand that Jayce did a lot wrong, but omg do I believe he was trying his best. He had a LOT of people around him manipulating him (yes a lot of that was Mel, but Mel was amazing and I don't think her manipulation was out of malice or even that the character would realize she was doing it), and I think Vi said it best, in many ways he was a "victim" of the politics he really didn't want any part of. He was also a bit of an idiot sometimes, and I don't think he realized the horrors of what the undercity was going through until late episode 8, so his prejudices are believable (certainly not correct, as prejudices inherently are not). As soon as he was awoken to this, he made the changes to push for peace.
Ultimately there were many characters I enjoyed more than Jayce. The Jinx/Vi dynamic was one of the most tragic storylines I have seen and I am glad the emotional core of the show revolved around this relationship. I cannot wait to see Caitlyn and Vi's relationship to develop. At the end of episode 6 Caitlyn might have been my favorite character, but she didn't get much more development for the rest of the season. Silco is one of the best villains in any media. Vander and even Grayson were people I wanted so much more of. Ekko is incredible, and I hope that the Ekko/Heimerdinger pairing is a bigger part of season 2.

The reason the first three episodes felt like their own thing was because the series was released in batches, three at a time. So the first act of Arcane was basically the first episode
There's gonna be some more magical things in fights later on, but it's probably gonna stick to a very brawler style of fights with Vi, at the very least, because in the game she fights with the gauntlets she gets later on in the series.

Interesting that you say it's next GoT cause to me Attack on Titan is already our next GoT... but Arcane made me feel that Mistborn animated would look as good! Jayce was my least fav too , he was just so idk uninteresting? I loved Vi, Jinx, Vander, Silco, Professor, Victor, May, Ekko! Kinda felt that Vi&Catlyn were a bit too rushed with falling for each other and mostly loved he dynamic between Vander-Vi-Silco-Jinx

This looks really good! think this may be my husband and I's next show, we actually watch a lot of animated shows and anime togehter so I think he would really like this.
Viktor was my favourite, followed by Silco, then Vi, then Jinx. I loved Jinx's VA, Vi's fight scenes and Silco's entire arc... But... Viktor had moments and lines which just stuck with me even after the show had finished.

Went in completely blind, but it was a mesmerizing experience. The animation is so damn beautiful and detailed. Down to the incredible nuance of characters' facial expressions. This is how you effectively present a fantasy world to new audience, the animation as media is just superior in my opinion. Also, it often times plot-wise took risks that some live-action shows wouldn't dare. Great writing for such a large cast of characters. My favorite were Jinx, Silco and Viktor. I could easily watch 10 more seasons of this and I hope they maintain the excellent quality for next seasons.
I love Arcane. That's all I have to say.

I know about LoL, but don' really know about LoL - basically, I knew it was a game my bf played and had some musics I liked on UA-cam. That said, I was blown away. I absolutely loved it. The various representations of trauma in ALL characters - even the ones from Piltover ... I understand every character, their motivations, their fears and hopes, the why they chose to behave in a certain way, even If I, myself, don't agree with it. It's brilliant. If anyone reading this doesn't want to watch it because it's based on a game, you're missing out.

Arcane was a genuine treat. Not sure how it's related to your channel,but if you're open to branching out. Try watching Brand New Cherry Flavor, it's also on Netflix. It never took off and it was super frustrating cause I wanted to hear people's thoughts.
Can wait for Viktor to enter his "Glorious Evolution" phase. One of my favorite "villains" in league/Legends of Runeterra.
I've stopped on ep6. and haven't picked it back up for a few weeks. I'm finding it a bit of a drag tbh. D: But after watching this, I feel motivated to finish it off!

Lol nah that’s how we all react without anyone around, and we all know we do this as gamers in our own ways yeah but we been there, shouldn’t let it get to you like that really though, plus I think the language barrier really places you on the outside within the game still.

Agree about pretty boy, he’s both my least favourite character but also so very well written. I think if I was to pick a favourite it would be Vi. As an older sibling that was also thrust into a role where you almost have to try and parent while still being a kid she is so insanely relatable.
The gay romance is the best.... Too many fav characters. Love Victor, Echo, Jinx...
I think the 1st episode's intent is to let our guard down so that we'll realize too late that we've already binged watch the show in one sitting. That definitely happened to me 😅😆

Episode 3 was just 🤯
Poverty is defined as income below a certain level. Unemployed are poor by definition, but people think that only homeless are poor. Hire an unemployed with a decent wage, and poverty ends. But many recruiters still treat hiring as if it was dating. They discard people as if they were divas having some people trying to marry them. It is a very cruel way to treat the poor.
Robbery is a sign of poor values. It is not good to hire robbers, for they will rob you. It seems Zaun has poor law enforcement and Piltover is so incompetent they cannot bring jobs to the people.
I don't agree that it's okay for young children. The violence near the end of episode 3 it's reason enough.

I loved all the pretty boys. My favourite characters were Mel, Jayce and Viktor. I love a good political intrigue especially when characters with good intentions have to get their hands dirty for the greater good.
