Yo man you saved me. I alwsys struggled with this technique and thx to you I finally got it! Started at 70 bpm After a month Im going at 90. Best video on this subject period
Can't believe it took me this long to find this video! Easily the best tutorial for finger technique I've ever seen! So helpful, even for a long time drummer with stubborn muscle memory! Thank you!
I really liked your lesson very timely and I love that you started it at the very bottom of the foundation , I can’t see a better way of learning something🎉
This is absolutely my favourite practice video, i haven’t even begun following along and i can already tell the topics i need to improve and you explain thoroughly and more importantly in a way i can understand and how i can improve these grey areas, until now ive never watched a lesson and thought “hmm, you know maybe i can do this” but now i know i can get back onto my pad and after a rewatch of this ill be deep in the practice mindset, i 1000% reccomend this man ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Большое спасибо! Мой сын ходит в музыкальную школу, но там кроме нот ничего не дают. Приходится много информации искать в интернете. Ваши советы и упражнения- это находка! Успехов в развитии канала!
Thanks , this is a very good lesson. I'm thinking this will help with the weak hand too. I hope this will help transition into American grip as well . But I'm going to focus on this grip for some time. Thanks Brother.
@@BetterDrumming You mean playing quarter notes (only one note per beat) at 100 BPM, right? 100 is fast even just playing quarter notes. I started playing drums less than 6 months ago. My top speed playing double strokes using the push/pull technique is 75 BPM playing 16th notes. And that's something I've practiced for a while.
If you start practicing this technique from complete beginner, how many years do you think does it take to get to a point where you can play a decent blastbeat?
This question is in regards to the third, fourth and fifth finger. After the stick rebounds are we suppose to keep the finger on the stick? My fulcrum stays intact, but third finger tends to drift away. Like I'm tapping a button. For example when dribbling a basketball, the hand inevitably looses contact with the ball with it hits the ground.
This is a great question! After the rebound the stick should move your finger back into place. If you’re holding the 3,4,5 fingers relaxed, the sticks should move your fingers for you. I usually aim to keep contact with the stick through the whole motion, otherwise I find you can get jerky motions with the stick rebounding into the finger if it has lost contact. Hope this helps!
Hello Ryan, this is explained to perfection, and I am interested in two things: is this the first exercise for beginners or is there something else before that and how much time per day should be exercised each finger?? I would be grateful for your answer.. .
Thanks for watching, I’ve found this is a good place to start! 5-10mins a day doing a few minutes on each finger is a good starting point. Hope this helps!
Definitely! If you rotate your hand into German grip you use the same technique but in an ‘upwards’ motion. Definitely will help improve your German grip technique :)
Thank you Ryan. Great explanation! I normally use American grip. Should I practice this first in French grip as you do and later go to American? Thanks.
Hi ronphilbeckpottery! I too play American grip :) I’d recommend starting in French grip to get a feel for the technique, then you can rotate your hand to American grip and all the same principles apply!
@@BetterDrumming Thanks so much. Really been trying to work on my finger technique and your video was so helpful. Thanks for the quick reply to my question.
Hi! Love this class! One question: When you say to do an exercise for a really long time, could you give me an idea of how ling that might be? I know it might be different for each person but let me explain. I'm a beginner, so 5 minutes of this could seem like an eternity but on the other hand, I know I could obsess with something like this and take to the extreme. Your thoughts, please! And thanks in advance for your time!!
Hi Cheryl! Thanks! Consistency is key! If you spend a couple minutes on each exercise daily, you’ll see results within a few weeks! Little and often is the way to go in my opinion :) hope this helps! Ryan
Nice!! My only question, if you see this, is at the start it looks like you're closer to german grip whereas all the exercises focus on french grip... is there anything different you need to do when transitioning to german grip? I feel like it's harder because the stick hits the palm of my hand when I use the fingers in german, and it's also so hard not to use the wrist in german grip.
Thanks for watching! When I play the ride cymbal I mostly play in French grip, but you can definitely use finger technique in German grip, it’s a more into the palm technique though as you mentioned, best of luck and I hope this helps!
I have 3 questions: How long did it take you to get to this level of finger technique efficiently? What about using bigger sticks for this exercise or maybe turn the stick and practice the blunt end? Left hand stick is creeping, will it go away with after awhile? Thank you for your video tutorial
@@calvinpham5547 Thanks for your questions! I learned this technique years go, but if you’re consistent with practise you can definitely learn it in a few months! Bigger sticks can help as they are more forgiving, you can use them to help you get the feel for the technique, then use your normal sticks again. I haven’t tried using the blunt end before, I’ll have a go! Try slightly tightening the grip on your left hand to secure the stick from shifting! Hope this helps :)
Another good tip is work out your forearms. To use your fingers in this motion is using your forearms and it’s also said that if you work out a muscle then the ability to learn something new with that muscle increases. There’s a vid on UA-cam specifically for workouts for drummers and how to hit the muscles that you ACTUALLY use while drumming and I highly recommend looking into it. But basically do a T-pose and do a fast grabbing motion with both hands constantly. Within 30 seconds you should feel it, and I’ve found having a stress ball or something like that in your hands while doing it increases the effectiveness.
Hi there! I've had lessons, watched videos, done exercises, and I can kind of do double strokes, but watching that scissor motion in your hands has inspired me to try this method. Don't know yet if I've found the holy grail, but surely something good will come out of it. Thanks a lot! 👍🤓 PS: for trad grip, could this technique work using thumb only?
Hi Hans, great to hear :) glad you’re feeling inspired! Absolutely this technique works in trad grip with the thumb. You can also turn your hand over and use both the middle and index fingers in trad grip too!
@@BetterDrumming Cheers Ryan! Weird thing is, my wrists are perfectly still when playing one hand at a time, but as soon as I alternate the strokes, the wrists start to move a bit. Gotta practise more. And for the trad grip exercise, I assume you mean the palm is upwards 🙂
Great video. So I have noticed that with my left, weak hand, I tend to keep using my wrist. With my right I can use just my fingers. Except my pinky, have to work on that. I find that applying a little pressure with the right hand, holding the left to help stabilise the wrist can help isolate the fingers, just be cautious not to squeeze the left hand too hard, or for long periods of time. Alternatively, try slowing down the movement so you can focus on only using the fingers. Hope this helps!

I can now do the finger technique separately in my hand. But I have a struggle in doing it alternately in single stroke.
Great! Try and play a speed that you can play ‘even’ strokes hand to hand using fingers. Start around 100bpm and work up, focusing on evenness!
Yes correct! Quarter notes at 100bpm. If that’s fast, reduce the speed to 80bpm or even 60bpm, focusing on control of the technique! :)
