- Here's a video for "Pretty Ballerina", a beautiful sentimental ballad by "The Left Banke" (USA 1966). The music works very well with the animation, borrowed from the movie "Tin Soldier" (USSR).
I claim no rights - I made it as a labour of love! The lyrics:
I had a date with a pretty ballerina
Her hair so brilliant that it hurt my eyes
I asked her for this dance and then she obliged me
Was I surprised, yeah
Was I surprised, no not at all
I called her yesterday, it should have been tomorrow
I could not keep the joy that was inside
I begged for her to tell me if she really loved me
Somewhere a mountain is moving
Afraid it's moving without me
I had a date with a pretty ballerina
Her hair so brilliant that it hurt my eyes
I asked her for this dance and then she obliged me
Was I surprised, yeah
Was I surprised, no not at all
And when I wake on a dreary Sunday morning
I open up my eyes to find there's rain
And something strange within said "go ahead and find her
Just close your eyes, yeah
Just close your eyes and she'll be there..."
I'm an old guy (almost 70), and I agree with TuberOnTheLoose - I have never seen anything like this. My wife and I started dating in 1966, and this was one of my favorite songs from that period. The scene where the ballerina tosses the snowflakes, and they melt into the soldier's heart - is such a beautiful metaphor for what I felt when we first fell in love... and now, 50 years later. Thank you so much for doing this. It made my day. :-)
When I read the comments, I realize how much we are all the same. Our souls have all been profoundly touched by this hauntingly beautiful song.
Right said Brett!!
If you've never felt this way about a girl, you have missed one of the paramount experiences of your entire life, and I pity you...mine was in college, and she broke my heart to pieces in the sweetest way imaginable...after fifty years, the ache, the loss, is still there...
+Gerald Jensen I too had a somewhat same experience. My high school sweetheart broke mine when I was in Texas serving Sam in 69. But today K.P. and I are as close as a brother and his sister could be.
+Gerald Jensen Any man worth his salt has had a similar experience. But in the long run it is still worth it.
God love you. Every woman on earth wishes she knew what that experience of being loved so passionately was. I have so many friends to this day ask me if I regret because my first love did not work out: better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all is not a cliche for no reason at all, folks.
Beautiful, but what a terribly sad song; maybe the saddest song ever written about unrequited love.
This song is a classic. I loved it in 1966. Beautifully done to this 1959 animation!
seems like the soldier had to navigate the treacherous waters of war and as he goes down with the ship his thoughts turn to the most joyful part of his life, his time with the pretty ballerina
Written in a combination of Lydian and Mixolydian modes. Hence - the uncommon sound to our ears.! (And beautiful.) With the addition of this Russian Video - this is just a gem of artistry.
Russian animation is so under appreciated. I wish there were a huge DVD collection.
Loved the Left Banke. Their music has a timeless quality to it.
This video is one of my favorite things I've ever seen on youtube.
TuberOnTheLoose Well thank u Tuber, I appreciate that!
Same here. I discovered this when I met my soon to be wife
the classic rock station played this yesterday, had to email them to get them to tell me what it was, and they just responded, a great melody that brings back happy memories
THIS IS A SONG THAT WAS PERMANTLY PLANTED IN MANY HEARTS FROM THOSE THAT HEARD THIS WHEN IT CAME OUT.
IT'S AS BEAUTIFUL TODAY AS IT WAS IN THE 60'S..
THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SONG EVER CREATED. R.I.P. MIKE BROWN
Wow! what a trip down memory lane! The first time I got up the courage to ask a girl to a dance, she kissed me on the cheek, and said yes! (I was a highschool sophomore.) This song was in my head all day. (Of course I have no recollection of anything my teachers tried to teach me that day!)
Hello to all the romantics with good taste in music. good luck finding anything as lovely, peaceful, soothing to watch or listen. amazing how someone can create something that touches so many. :- ) thanks for posting
The video reminds me of the Hans Christian Anderson story of the Steadfast Tin Soldier who fell in love with a paper ballerina.
pretty ballerina is a timeless song
The animation goes so well with the song it's unbelievable! Both are unique and spellbinding; pure magic together.
When I listen to this enchanting song, I am whisked back to 9th grade, where life was beginning to reveals its treasures!

This Left Banke record made a huge impact on the radio in Ottawa, Canada back in the day. Still a timeless classic!
Beautiful and innocent days. I miss them!!
So do i sooooo much😉
So haunting, bittersweet. The animation is the perfect addition.
I shared this with my echocardiogram tech. She found the heartburst animation fetchingly beautiful. Personally, I just cry over the little toy soldier's plight, and remember the past.
Tears of joy, be thankful for that! Love from this side

I an entranced...I am swirling..lightly..on point..on toe..so magical.
Real, real, nice. Really brings you back, when music was such a part of our growing up. There were so many great artists , who had good wholesome lyrics to go with creative melodies.
Very classy video, love the characters!
Nicely Done. What a lovely, poignant song.
i've been listening to this song a lot lately and decided to check youtube for a live performance and found this instead. this is BEAUTIFUL!
Beautiful..what a great mix of song and film...
Very nice job on merging these 2 works of art, robbot1964... I applaud you on now making it 3 works of art !
Dynamite video!
You did a terrific editing job! Your film enhances the poignance of the song. I never cried to this song before, but yet, I felt tears. The abstraction of the animation is just enough to move one's imagination to some emotional memories that have no words. Ethereal.
This is so sweet and so a ballerina, story with a man. I get it. Tons of movies, but this is such a sweet story....of this song. Such a romantic story...such a tear.
