Knob Creek 12 is my go to lately. I can’t get enough of it. Absolutely amazing oak profile. I know some people actually prefer the 9, but to me it doesn’t compare. I recently got an 11 year barrel pick that is delicious as well.

Hey Kurt, I recently did a blind with the MM 2023 BEP, 2022 BRT-01 & BRT-02, and the old label MM 46 CS. The Maker's 46 Cask Strength was the clear winner and I LOVE all those other bottles. I was surprised to say the least but I have always liked the Maker's 46 with the French oak staves. I sm thankful it's a regular release unlike all the others.

  • @TomH1947

Hi Kurt....been a while but greetings from Louisville! Well, I've been thinking about bourbon noses. One thing I find in common w/ several older boubon lovers is when one opens a fresh bottle, my 1st whiff often smells of Wham-o's Superelasticbubbleplastic stuff. It's the goop that you would fashion into a glob at the end of a small straw & blow into a clear plastic bubble. Odd smell but very common until the whisky opens up.

I am definitely on the Knob Creek wagon this fall. I have been leaning more to the Single Barrel Selects and store picks. All I have found come in around $59 but you get the added 20 proof over regular Knob Creek 9

I keep about half a dozen “special” bottles for special occasions and then I also usually keep one each of bourbon, rye, Irish, and scotch whiskies as my weekend sippers. When I finish one of those bottles I replace it but rarely with the same thing so I’m always drinking something different. Right now my weekend sippers are Monkey Shoulder, Jameson Caskmates Stout, New Riff Single Barrel Rye, and Knob Creek 9 yr (100 proof).

Try the Flor de Caña 12 year rum for a nice sipper. They have an 18 as well, but that’s over-oaked for my taste. And if you can find it, the Zacapa Centenario XO is fantastic for someone who likes good whiskey!

Have bought regular Makers, poured it down the drain, then tried Makers 46 which finished last in every blind I tried it in with a bad medicinal odor, gave it away. Your enthusiasm for the 46 Cask Strength will make me at least try a pour somewhere but won’t buy it yet

I was super lucky enough to be in Massachusetts a few years ago and stumble upon a rare bottle of Grander 13 year toasted rum store pick finished in Woodford Double oak barrels…only 2 stores in the US has them. Kurt, I’m thinking it was the same one that Lance was hyping on his channel (whiskey tornado). I can 100% agree with you, it’s awesome! I’m impressed! Im not even a rum guy in general, but it’s phenomenal! Cheers! 👍🥃

    Thanks guys, great video!
If you like Westland I’d really recommend ahold of their Outpost Range Garryana. It’s 100 proof and the Garryana oak adds a great bourbonish spiciness….it might be Trenton’s gateway into single malts!
    My fall pours have been:
    Knob Creek 12
    Foursquare 2010
    Kilchoman (Madeira Release)
    Kilchoman (Sauternes Finish)
    Kilkerran 8 Sherry Cask
    Kilkerran 16
I’ve been really into anything from Kilchoman or Kilkerran really 😂

Right now I am loving some Laird's 10th Generation 100 proof BIB 5 year old Apple Brandy... has those nice fall apple notes, lovely sweetness and an overall nice richness. If you can find the 12 year old Rare Apple Brandy, or the Single Cask Apple Brandy, grab them! I live only a couple miles from the original distillery in NJ, there's still some storage houses there. Lots of history there; oldest American distillery!

Whoa. Wait a minute. You said at 12:26 of the Penelope 4 grain that it has 3% malted barley? That’s a pretty small amount. I mean standard bourbon mashbills usually have much more than that. Old Forester, for example, is 10% malted barley. How is 3% in a four grain training your pallet to enjoy or appreciate a single malt whiskey? Is it really just 3%? I’d maybe go for the Woodford Straight Malt (I think that’s 51%) to get a better appreciation. Great show by the way, I don’t mean to be critical at all. Love those rum choices!

The Appleton 12yr is an excellent starter rum, great in a cocktail or neat. The 15yr isn’t that much better, you have to jump up to the Appleton 21yr old, to really experience an amazing sipping rum. If you want to try some true Jamaican “funk” try to find some Hampden Estate 8yr old, which will give you the true flavor of what is referred to as “funk”.

I'm not really a seasonal drinker at all when it comes to drinking spirits straight up. However, when it comes to cocktails, in the summer I drink more margaritas and palomas, and in the fall/winter I drink more old fashioneds/Manhattans. In the spring I will occasionally mix up some mint juleps.

4 Roses Single Barrel is one of my daily drinkers and lately Green River Bourbon has been tasting pretty good (though I hated the wheated version). I drink rye all the time and right now the one I'm going back to the most is Smoke Wagon BIB Rye. Smoke Wagon Uncut the Younger is also finding it's way to my glass pretty often.
On the Scotch side I'm just about to kill off a Ardbeg 10. Once that's gone I'll probably replace it with an ugedail.

I personally drink Bourbon and Scotch from Fall to early/mid spring. Once it starts getting warm out and summer hits I stick to beer. Nothing better to me than spending time outside on a warm summer day with an ice cold beer. My house also doesn't have A/C so sipping whiskey isn't too enjoyable in the summer. But during winter its all about the whiskey with a few dark seasonal beers mixed in.
