I agree. Some of these allocated bottles, I can't get. I have had some great bottles and some not worth the money. I, myself started last year to find the best off the shelf bottles at reasonable costs. As for bad bottles, there are plenty. However Jim Beam white label or even Wild Turkey (80 proof) are not the best for slipping but great for mixing at their price points.
Great idea for a video. Would love to see you do other distilleries such as Heaven Hill, Makers Mark, Four Roses, etc. I have not had to top bottles of any of these, but agree with the best shelfers in all four. I had a sample of the Statesman in a bourbon tasting last month and did not care for it. Tasted like chewing on a piece of banana taffy.
Sadly, I loved Four Roses Small Batch. Last bottle I tried, was so horrible I couldn't believe it. It tasted like ethanol or Chemically. Disappointed was an understatement.
I hear a lot of folks absolutely hate four roses. Don't know if it's something that hits certain people's palates wrong or they have some bad quality control. I think most their stuff is pretty good but a little flat.

@@Robert.Sheard Not sure if you will find Stagg there...but they usually sell one of the harder to get bottles everyday. And it changes from one day to the next. @@lfd_eng9219 Well, a miracle happened today. I often troll the Total Wine website and saw Stagg available in store in Lexington, KY. Can't believe I fell into one like that.
Bourbon is so crazy to me. For me Benchmark Bonded might just be the best $20 bottle I've ever had. That stuff is sensational and has killed me in blinds before with how good it was. Wild how different everyone's palettes are. For me, my distillery of choice would be Wild Turkey with my favorite being Kentucky Spirit, shelf bottle is 101 > RareBreed and worst is my RR Single Barrel store pick. (But I adore RR10)

I love the Buffalo Trace products and I love your videos! My daily drinker is Buffalo Trace, and we can get it regularly in Oregon at about $29 for a 1L bottle. We can also find Eagle Rare pretty regularly on the shelves out here too for around $39 for the 750ml bottle. Good luck finding much Weller or Blanton's out here but when you do find it the prices are reasonable as the state of Oregon regulates the retail prices. Keep up the good work!
Great idea for a video! Respectfully, Jack Daniels single barrel barrel proof is by far the best shelf bottle that brown-forman offers... Also Coy Hill crushes bday bourbon in the allocated category imo.
Great choices! I have to say that with Buffalo Trace products, the least favorite was very easy to pick in Benchmark. However, that shelf choice is relatively hard since a majority of BT is allocated. I can’t imagine the amount of time that you guys took in discussing! Truly appreciate your efforts! Thank you for the content!
The distance between Wild Turkey 101 and the 81 is immense. I can't imagine the latter, while I often enjoy the 101--especially mixed. Agree on Rare Breed. My everyday sipper is Knob Creek. I enjoy both the regular (100p) and the single (120p).

Rare breed has got to be my absolute favorite that you can pick up anytime! It simply can't be beat for the quality and proof that you get for the money and availability! Fantastic pour! Great video
The proof, mouth feel and finish on RB is truly unbeatable at it's price point, I just wish it fit my palate better as it's not my favorite flavor profile.

Great video gents! I’d have the similar dilemma choosing between 1910 and 1920-they’re both great, just for different reasons. I’m with Kurt though-1910 edges past 1920, for me. That said, I’m with Trenton when choosing between Eagle Rare and Buffalo Trace. Perhaps I need to let it breathe a little more but the first couple times I had a pour, it had a bitterness I wasn’t fond of, and the BT had all the flavors I liked without the bitterness…could’ve just been a bad day-who knows I recently acquired a bottle of Col Taylor small batch and it’s very tasty, but I *rarely* see it when I’m out and about, so it’s hard for me to like it too much because I know when it’s gone, I may not find another for awhile.
I think they got it right. For me it's not close personally but I can see why people would prefer the sweetness level of a 1910 but 1920 is a higher proof point at basically the same price point more well balanced more versatile etc. I think it's just about the best shelf bourbon you can buy for 55-65 dollars personally.
I have only tried Eagle Rare once and really enjoyed it, but regular Buffalo Trace is just average to me given the difficulty in getting it in some areas. I have a bottle of it but there are a lot of other more readily available bottles out there with the same price point and quality.
In Louisiana up until recently we could get Buffalo Trace for $17 a bottle anywhere, $15 at Costco, it's $22 now. Didn't grow up drinking it I have no fondness for the brand but that value was incredible, I've totally acquired a fondness for its taste.
Here in Alberta, Canada 7 of those 12 bottles are unobtanium, OF 1920 is 80-90, Rare Breed is 75-80. Knob Creek 9 and Wild Turkey 101 are usually 40-45 sometimes under 40. White Label is around 30, cheaper on sale. A few times a year I can find Knob Creek 9 on sale for 35 and Buffalo Trace for 28, usually pick up a couple when the sale hits. Most Bourbons you guys class in the 20-30 dollar range are in the 40-60 range locally. Most prices have increased 10-20% in recent times.
About the only thing I would change. I would swap E.H. Taylor small batch for the Eagle Rare. Just as easy to get, and a better pour in my opinion. Well worth the extra $10.
I highly recommend you getting your hands on some of the offerings from Balcones. Great stuff with some unique flavour profiles that I think you will both enjoy. Great episode and for me in Australia I can't go past the WT 101 for bang for buck value.
I liked the Wild Turkey Longbranch flavor but there was not enough of the flavor. I'd like to see a Longbranch in a higher proof and then compare them. Great show!! TonyB
We want to know the lousy ones so we don't waste money on them ! Jim Beam is the best selling bourbon in the world ! That Old Forester 1920 is one of my favorites, great stuff. Cannot argue with alot of the picks. The George T. Stagg is not available where I live. The last bottle i found was $1,500 !! It was next to the Pappy that was 3K. I love the Eagle Rare and Rare Breed, they are 2 of my favorites. Great video guys !
My pallet is more in line w/Trentons, I've been a rye drinker when your options were very limited. Likewise, when I lived in Louisville I became enamoured w/Beam and Makers. This was when the Bakers/Bookers line was just starting up. So I continue to hold those biases today. I think this is a great idea and I'd like to see Makers in the next batch.
Please continue with other line ups from other distilleries sister brands as well like for brown formen Jack and Woodford line up for example. P.S. I love your guys content. Keep it up!
Loved the video though y’all forgot Heaven Hill, would love to see how that would shake out. I personally would’ve gone for Benchmark Fullproof for the BT shelf pick
Nice comparison! Could maybe expand it to a part II with the next 4 largest distilleries. I'd particularly be curious about the Heaven Hill family, as many of my favorites come from them. I haven't had any of the top selections from the distilleries you chose, but of them I pretty much agree with what you have except for Old Forester. I do like the Statesman, and all the varieties. Some are better than others so while I can't choose which one would be my least favorite, it's still something I'd drink handily. Jim Beam gives me a special kind of shiver down my back, and not a good one. I had the WORST hangover of my entire life from that stuff. So bad it put me off all bourbon for 15-20 years. Now that I've discovered the pleasures of what a good bourbon is, I still won't drink it!
Is the regular benchmark not worth buying? I live in Arkansas and we have zero buffalo trace products other than regular no 8 benchmark and ancient age. I’ve put off buying it because no one ever talks about it
I'm kind of thinking that Longbranch would have been their worst WT product if they had a bottle of it. I'm with you with regards to the 80 proof. It's a great Summer bourbon.
Have you guys tried the Tanner Creek from MPG? I know it is available in Indiana and is really cheap $25-30/bottle. It is a lovely bourbon at that price point.
If I was on the Titanic on my way down......I would scoop up the Wild Turkey products as my one armful of bourbons allowed on the lifeboats......just say'in.
Great Video Guys, I enjoy you both so much. You have turned me on to GOOD BOURBON S, I can’t afford those very expensive bottles but I have upgraded my picks from Jack Daniel s, and George Dickle.
Very cool concept. Hope to see some other distilleries show up in the same format. Yes, some are "unicorns" for us...but you stated that it is what you had on hand. Haven't had Hardin's Creek or Stagg. Was able to get a tasting of Birthday when down in Louisville at Old Forester....just awesome!!! Keep at it!!! And keep Trenton away from the mushrooms!!!!
I wouldn't mind a best of MGP. Both with their own juice and sourced. They are easy to knock but don't get enough credit for putting out high volumes of quality whiskey.
I'll take Four Roses SB over Eagle Rare. I finally had the chance to try ER and was left wondering why all the hype. It's a damn fine pour, don't get me wrong... but I'm with Trent - I'll take regular ol' Buffalo Trace over ER 9 times out of 10.
Love the vid! Fun to see where we differ... 1920 just doesn't do it for me... but I really enjoy the Benchmark Bonded, for $20, that's one I enjoy a LOT given the price. If you're good with young whisky it's worth a try IMO...It's also a great one to decant and have around for mooches. Also HIGHLY recommend the Top Floor Benchmark ~$16 if you can find it (That stuff flies off the shelves around here)
Eh Taylor over Eagle rare....if you consider it a shelf pick? OHLQ had a Russell's barrel proof "store pick", if you want to call it that, and it is excellent
Best comparison I’ve seen in a while. The 3 bottle idea is great! Please continue with these!

Please continue with other line ups from other distilleries sister brands as well like for brown formen Jack and Woodford line up for example.
P.S. I love your guys content. Keep it up!
Definitely you guys should do a blind with Buffalo Trace and Eagle Rare.
Great video guys. Very informative
Agree with your feeling on Old Forester Statesman…. My least favorite of Old Forester line.
Is the regular benchmark not worth buying? I live in Arkansas and we have zero buffalo trace products other than regular no 8 benchmark and ancient age. I’ve put off buying it because no one ever talks about it
Do you know where I can find Harden creek in East Tennessee?
A neighbor had the Wild Turkey standard 80° bottle at a BBQ. I found it to be very good for an easy drinking summer bourbon.
I'm kind of thinking that Longbranch would have been their worst WT product if they had a bottle of it. I'm with you with regards to the 80 proof. It's a great Summer bourbon.
I agree the standard is good all around. It's in my daily rotation of all of my regular sippers.
Have you guys tried the Tanner Creek from MPG? I know it is available in Indiana and is really cheap $25-30/bottle. It is a lovely bourbon at that price point.
Tanners Creek is good stuff.
My everyday pour is the Knob Creek 9 year 120 proof. Brilliant for $50.
make this a series! would love to see it for every distillery
Jack single barrel select is a great bottle, id say the best in their lineup
@@robertjr1254 Thanks I will try it…
Very cool concept.
I live in Cincinnati never can find Eagle Rare. But I quit hunting for it. I am a Wild Turkey fan. And love Russell's and 101. LOVE YOUR POD CAST!
I wouldn't mind a best of MGP. Both with their own juice and sourced. They are easy to knock but don't get enough credit for putting out high volumes of quality whiskey.
When you mention price of a bottle in USD, does that include sales tax? I know booze is expensive in my country but is it that much cheaper in the US?
I'll take Four Roses SB over Eagle Rare. I finally had the chance to try ER and was left wondering why all the hype. It's a damn fine pour, don't get me wrong... but I'm with Trent - I'll take regular ol' Buffalo Trace over ER 9 times out of 10.
Have you guys tried Smoke Wagon Bourbon? I just picked up a bottle of the small batch.
That closing music though. “Ladies and gentlemen…..Mr Burt Bacharach”
Lately my go to shelf bottle is Knob Creek 9. Just started exploring Buffalo Trace so we’ll see where that goes
Also HIGHLY recommend the Top Floor Benchmark ~$16 if you can find it (That stuff flies off the shelves around here)
Another video I cant wait to get home to!
Cheers from the Prairies of Canada! 🇨🇦🥃
great vid, need another couple vids to highlight more distilleries.
Rare Breed amazing, have not had the pleasure of Eagle Rare yet, hard find here. Love the video.
I would love to see your thoughts on Heaven Hill.
Eh Taylor over Eagle rare....if you consider it a shelf pick?
OHLQ had a Russell's barrel proof "store pick", if you want to call it that, and it is excellent
Lucky you two, I had a shot of birthday this weekend. Loved it. Found a bottle the next day for $1500. Left it😢
The 80 proof WT beats Long Branch all day long. The LB is just not worth the price.
