- The high-profile game studio PlatinumGames has been struggling a bit in the last few years, so to try and come to terms with their recent titles, we're taking a look at their very first project. Time to check out the brutal, bloody, beat-em-up from Platinum Games on the Nintendo Wii, MadWorld and see how it holds up after all this time.

Jack: *slices bullets from a cowboy out of the air with his chainsaw*
Jack: *keeps two jedi from crushing him with freighters, with one in each hand before slicing apart both of them*
Jack: *hurls around a multi-ton ball on a chain to decapitate an oversized midget*
Post mesmeric: he's a normal dude
Compare to Dante or bayonetta or even viewtiful joe...he kinda is XD
Yeah I rolled my eyes when he said that
According to Google, Madworld is one of the best beatemups of all time.
Hell yeah it is
“Beat em up” is just not the correct term to describe the genre of this game. Rather “chainsaw em up” :-)
This game is so much fun😁
Who’s Google?
I haven't played his game yet, but I can say one thing...
Soundtrack kicks ass.
Yeah its a banger not many games can actually do hip hop sound tracts well and not be cringey
@@tyronechillifoot5573 Well despite how cheesy Knuckles music is in SA1 & 2 they have pretty good beats
TurtleGuy McTurtle well that franchise is cringey...
still fun though
i remember playing this barely at the age of 10 and i can attest the soundtrack was heat
I played it
MadWorld is an understated game only b/c it was on the Wii. I love it when it came out, and it really is a great start for Platinum Games.
Idea: What if Platinum remakes MadWorld but this time with good advertising?
i would be happy. and also with more better gameplay than before (not saying the original gameplay is bad)
remake this game and it will be more blood and gore than a triple a zombie game on ps5
@@notkimpine funny beceaus we got already zombies's! :D going for da maaaaaaaaaaad castle!
Man, if there was any game I wanted an HD port of on Switch it's this (well, there's probably a few others too). Still the only exclusive I miss from when I sold my Wii, I absolutely adored MadWorld. Flawed? Sure, but there's just something about it that resonated with me more than anything else from Platinum (even if I have a newfound love for Bayonetta and really enjoyed Devastation as well).
I would love Red Steel 2 also.
I agree 100%
I'd say Transformers Devastation was their best licensed game. It's one of the best games they made period in my opinion.
Definitely, it's my favorite Transformers game.
Im from the future and Astral chain is pretty damn good. I don't think these guys are going anywhere
I'm from the future. While Bayonetta 3's story was lackluster, the game was still incredible and the gameplay pretty good
I remembered playing this back in my junior high days. Haven’t missed a Platinum game since
Will always consider it a shame that I never got around to Mad World. Enjoyed the analysis.
So fucking play it already..
I still have rhe game for the wii and it still works
@Exodus N its $10 on ebay
A bargainbin masterpiece. Game oozes style, creativity and detail. Still play it every now and again
Thank you for reminding me of this sick OST!

I don't think platinum is going anywhere. 2 or 3 disappointments don't mean a company is going under, especially not after nier automata was so ridiculously popular.
It was? I think its hardcore fanbase think it was, when it wasnt.
Coleco 84
Over 2 million copies and plenty of award wins/nominations. I don't know if I'd use the quantifier "ridiculous" to describe it, but it's definitely popular, especially for a game of its type.
Plus, a game getting that sort of attention from UA-camrs and Award Shows bodes well for the reception to their future projects. It's not just the game's fanbase, it's "core gamers" as a whole that so celebrate the game.
I haven't played it yet, but I'm pretty much just waiting for the next big sale (I missed the TGA sale, and it wasn't discounted during Steam Winter sale) and more time to play games in general. The music alone sold me on it, though everything else I've seen of it has been amazing too (the non-linearity of the ending scares me a little, but that's probably my only major worry).
I recall Hideki Kamiya saying that Yoko Taro and Nier Automata "saved Platinum." I'm happy that the game turned out so well with such good reception. I just hope the momentum keeps rolling.
@@Jose-se9pu now over 4 million copies sold
It did. Astral Chain happened.
Great analysis. It would really be interesting to tackle Infinite Space and Anarchy Reigns, two other Platinum games anyone rarely talks about.
Infinite Space might be hard because it's a DS game and I don't have a capture card at the moment, but Anarchy Reigns is fair game. I'll look into it. :)
I remember when I was 9 I had just recently got a wii and my dad had taken me to a GameStop and said He would buy a game I wanted to get with it. Absolutely nothing caught my eye except this game I had no idea what it was about or what kinda game it was I just had that kid mentality so I saw it and wanted it. This game has stuck with me ever since I got it if you got a Wii and still play on it for some reason I recommend give ing this game a chance if you’re into beat em up games.
For me, the most obvious comparison has always been No More Heroes (gameplay wise, not storywise). Both are action games where you fight large amounts of enemies and both incorporate motion controls. The difference however, is in how those motion controls are implemented. In No More Heroes, motion controls are isolated from the rest of the combat: the game slows down and the player can do nothing but try to execute the correct motion which is telegraphed through a giant prompt on the screen. This means the most of the rest of the combat is quite sleek and fast. In Madworld on the other hand, the motion controls are mixed with button controled combat. This makes the combat feel dirty and less precise, it's more like a brawl than a sleek looking action movie fight. To me, that is the part of Madworld that has always made it feel special: the sluggish, barfight-esque combat that complements its gore and roughneck main character.
That was a fantastic way of putting it.
Greg and John are the main reason I come back to this game. They still have fond memories of it as they responded to me about it on Twitter.
OK, I need food before I watch this. It's gonna be a good one!
"... and it shouldn't take itself seriously."
This seems to be the prevailing opinion on the game, which is a bit sad if you ask me, me but not for the reasons I think most of you would think. The guy who wrote the game is Yasumi Matsuno, the same guy behind FF Tactics, XII, and Vagrant Story. The identity of the writer by itself I think warrants a closer look at the writing and themes (though you're free to disagree), even though it in no way guarantees any depth to speak of. But I think that in the case of MadWorld, there is, if you at all are interested to look at violence as a concept and as a human tendency. I'll readily admit that the story is all but straight forward, but I think that that is kind of the point, because otherwise the ultimate revelation about Jack's actual motives wouldn't come as a surprise and kind of upend whatever your perception of him was. I guess you could have had him pinned as this kind of tragic hero all along, but I think most people didn't, and I think a lot of people still don't because they haven't bothered to look closer at the events of the game, and the deceptions being perpetrated. And that is fine; if that stuff doesn't interest you, sure. But I think anyone who looks a little closer can find quite the commentary on the portrayal of violence in contemporary society. And then I'm not referring to the superficial stuff like the hyper-exaggerated format, which still serves that same purpose, or even the ostensible "philosophy" being discussed at times. That's kiddy stuff. Ultimately Jack has no affiliation with anyone in the story, and used anyone he seemed to have it with as a means to an end - use that as a springboard and look at Jack, his background, and why he does what he does. Then I think you'll see a message, whatever you make of it. But to make it out as if there's no real substance here is disingenuous at best and ignorant at worst. At least if you ask me. Peace :)
I know this game ain't perfect. However, for me, it represents the birth of a studio whose games I love. This company, Grasshopper Manufacturer, and Suda 51 just make games that strike a chord with me. Lets not EVER forget the legend, Yoko Taro as well.
Bitch, this game's OST is a blessing.
We need a remastered version for switch

Okay that editing joke matching with the words is halious. Great video btw.
madword such an epic game
I agree that the game can be played as just another very fun and very violent game, but I disagree that the ideological and philosophical ideas in the story don't have merit. They aren't subtle, at all, but not everything needs to be subtle to have meaning. I think people have a problem with Madworld's story because, when you think about it, its a criticizes the player for all the violent fun they have with this game. Whether that criticism is warranted or not is up to the player, but I found it to be a light stroke of genius that made Madworld more than just another violent video game.
I’ve never seen anyone talk about this game. It seems pretty underground
Man, this just unlocks more of my childhood memories that I can't remember. I remember playing this when I was very young arond the age of 6-7 with a friend who sadly had to move. Man feels like I've been living two different lives I just seem to unlock more and more memories every day.
how on God’s blue earth do someone talk about MadWorld Wii for more than 1 second and NOT mention its killer soundtrack? i’m surprised there was no meaningful mention for the game’s incredible OST, frankly one of the best and doesn’t get enough praise.
After giving it a try recently, I’m impressed by how much they were able to get out of a system that’s one of the reasons why some third-party developers have trust issues with making games on Nintendo systems.
"Jack is a everyman" *while swinging grown man away with a stick like hes at baseball game*
What are you talking about?
This game made me to get a Wii. I got this game first from a flea market for $10, and the Wii at $60. Best buy I ever got and never regretted. I still have my copy to this day.
Played this years ago and didn't realize it was Platinum games, loved your analysis of it and what Platinum means
HOLY NOSTALGIA
one of my favorite games of all time, loved playing this with my cousins up all night
I absolutely love this game. Mad World and House of the Dead Overkill were surprisingly graphic Wii games.
Years later I’m still waiting for a switch port 😔
The moment I heard Adventure Time I couldn't unhear Jake's voice in the commentator.
A favorite of mine! This was exactly what I was looking for! Great video!!
MAN! I really fucking enjoyed this video, Alex. I liked how you contextualized your analysis of Mad World talking about how Platinum's been going as of late. Oddly enough, I've only played Mad World one time, and it was at a friend's. He hated it so much, couldn't tell what was going on because it the black and white graphics. At the time I agreed but I wasn't really playing it. He ended up giving it to me, and I haven't had any desire to touch it. BUT NOW. I'M IN IT.
Also, yo when's anarchy reigns vid?
I'm considering doing more Platinum games in the future and that's definitely one I'm eyeing.

You: *Does a video on Madword*
Me: ...and I’m subbed
Thanks I already was going to play this game but you shown me why this game is strong entry from platinum
this is a game I would love to see a PC remaster for
Both MadWorld, and the followup Max Anarchy, were my favorite games.
I pray there's a Switch re-release of this game.
both madworld and Anarchy Reign deserve next gen release.
How come this game wasnt made by Suda51?
the title of this game: gary jules song reference of the meme song
the gameplay: chainsaw man is the best anime beat em up game because the main character looks sick as fuck than chainsaw man
the music: sounds like 50 cent had a crossover with eminem but i've dont know the name of this song is
the voice acting: superb
is the game worth it? played it on a sweet dolphin emulator cause you know i'm a pc gamer played it on a sweet nvidia geforce gtx and 16gb ram and it runs perfect. so yeah. i enjoyed it in 2022. because i miss every goddamn wii games i rented on a game store.
I remember getting this game when I was little with my grandma not knowing what it was I played it for about 2 hours then she walked in and immediately took it out of the Wii we took it back the next day. Will always remember it though and hope I get to play it again one day.
I just discover MadWorld ten days ago, and is already open me on my mind, a new level of imagination and cool stuffs i can come up.
Artistically talking, i have a felling some one read me as a psycho, i mean, yes, but not by madworld i guess
i used to play this game as a little kid with my cousin on the wii
I love how Marcus Fenix (John DiMaggio) was an announcer.
I played mad world religiously
Interesting how relevant this video is and how Granblue and Bayo 3 are still their upcoming games.
AWESOME RACK ON HERE THOUGH
True that.
I really wish they release a remaster version anytime soon...
FUCKK YES I HOPE THAT TO
Shinji Mecummy
You said "Madworld is a cartoon" and i and though for a second and showed my dad the artstyle and he said its like Sincity so its more like a comic visually and i can see that
I thought infinite space was playinums first game on the DS.
Madworld first launched in North America before Infinite Space first launched in Japan. They had very close release windows, though.
I remember never finishing this game because when I was 10 my dad saw me playing 5 minutes and took it away from me lmaoo
I hope one day madworld gets a remaster like no more heroes though I doubt it.
No mention of how great Greg and John as the announcers are and how much life and feel they put into the game by constantly being in the players ear? No mention of the absolute killer soundtrack made for the game by taking classical artists, having them make a wonderful instrumental piece and then getting modern rappers to put in original lyrics related to the game and setting on top of it?
Damn dude, nothing you said here was wrong, but you didn't cover two of the biggest elements of style the game had going for it.
How did you go the whole vid without a segment on the music :/ It has such an amazing and memorable sound track that really sucks you into the game and make you feel like you're Jack. I honestly can't think of another game with such an amazing original sound track.
Bayonetta 3 only took 4 years to come, but it looks good! As for GRAND BLUE.... Yeah huuh. At least we got Astral Chain, which is also a gem.
Let's just say platnum is good when they are given freedom.
i always thought the main character was the guys from gears of war when i was younger lol
My main criticism with your review is how you never seem to hold MadWorld up to it's own standards or in fact any other games of that era/genre except one reference to No More Heroes. It's always sucking up to Platinum Game's other titles and basing it off that, and it gets very annoying to listen to and I feel like even though you rated the game highly, it definitely affected the score because in your mind it's not up to the adequacy of the other Platinum Games titles. If that's what you're going for with this series, then that's perfectly fine, but if not, then I hope you change your reviewing ways and if you already have in your newer videos, congrats. :)
I agree it's annyoing.
I agree MadWorld isn't a character action game and shouldn't be compared to others as a standard. It's more akin to a beat 'em up.
I bought madword sealed it is the greatest violent game this is good just like manhunt 2
the reason why i like this game is Jack cayman and the artstyle. since i introduced him in Anarchy reign i come here. i was thought the gameplay is hack and slash like Bayonetta/ MGR. but when i saw the walkthrough the gameplay is more like Beat em up to me. and sadly i don't really into Beat em up genre. and yeah Madworld isn't for me i think. the thing that makes me love the game is the Presentation is outstanding. comic artstyle that "on point" imo. when i was watching the walkthrought i thinking more about artstyle more than gameplay mechanic. its only have 2 major color which is black and white with red and yellow additional accent color. i mean with black and white color they can present it well. they can make the visual of the character that blend with the environment pretty well like... how they can make the visual readable even with black and white only? and there's no in between shading like dot or line that fill between black and white.. that's what i need to learn as an artist, because im not really into comic artstyle so this is might be my homework as an artist.
After watching this, I went back to take a look at your Conker video, and I feel some of the arguments there hold merit for MadWorld as well. The difference being Rare producing something brash and lambasting everything from film to expectation to themselves, whereas MadWorld feels more like a brash statement of Platinum's high-octane direction. It feels like a continuation of God Hand in style with none of the nuance and all of the crassness cranked up to eleven, and I feel that trade-off in substance for style made it all the more appealing of a project to consumers than God Hand, as well as a solid middle finger to Capcom regulations and limitations. Thus, I feel that the mechanical shallowness of MadWorld is more of the point and more of what Platinum would build on in stuff like Bayonetta, when the focus was on delivering the feel of the game and, indeed, the feel of Platinum Games.
Not to say that I don't greatly appreciate the nuanced look at MadWorld's design philosophies, things like the rigidity of Jack never occurred to me before and I just figured "yeah he controls like a looser Gene, look he even has the same backflip for beginners to spam". Just so much care was put into MadWorld in areas like writing, voice acting, pacing of comedic scenes, and especially soundtrack whose DNA is seen in all Platinum projects afterward (especially Bayonetta and Revengeance) that I feel it's stronger as the expression of Platinum's emotion than the foundation of Platinum's mechanics, if that makes any sense.
Also the second horror level is garbage.
I miss this game from the Wii. Not the best but it was a great game for what it did
i would buy a wii just to play this game again. hopefully they drop this on the switch
It's strange, when somebodies does this much research, but doesn't even research how to pronounce names correctly.
Man I hated my Wii but I sure did love MadWorld. My stepdad would bitch about me playing GTA or Saints Row but I was allowed to play MadWorld lmfao
This was my first m raring game

Despite this over-analyzation of madworld, this game is still good flaws and all. Not every game have to be complex with characters that make william shakespeare blush.
I love madworld because it's simple not complicated.
Slice and dice that’s about it 😂
@@Lunatic_Logan Exactly!
This game frustrated the shiz outta me half the time but... Damn it's fun
Make it for Quest 2. VR please....
U are telling me that Jake the Dog was a commentator in madworld? LOl
I never noticed then again I beat it only Once back then
This is a game on a NINTENDO console

It's time to bring this for the switch. This and no more heroes 1 and 2
no more heroes 1&2 are on switch though
@@lavoncooper3176 it wasn't 8 months ago when I post this comment
Too bad the music in their other games isn't as good.
Except for Anarchy Reigns.
Metal gear rising as well
Love the sound track for those three games
I've always thought Platinum have an A-Team and a B-Team. A-Team: That new Spiderman game, B-Team: That TMNT game.
Platinum had nothing to do with Spiderman.
Ya thats annoying.. mistaking a insomniac game for a platinum game.. smh
I liked this game , personally I hated the motion controls
To me the artstyle is super annoying,i get its unique, but i cant watch it without my eyes getting lazy
