  • Leptospirosis!
I’ve gotten quite a lot of requests asking for information on Leptospirosis, so hopefully this little video helps a bit!
Now, this is what we call a “zoonotic” disease, which means we as people can get this from animals. Good hygiene and not drinking infected animals urine is usually gonna be enough to prevent you from getting this, however.

This is so interesting! I live in Mississippi & about 9 yrs ago I was given a toy poodle from an abusive home. He was not an outside dog😂. If it was raining or the grass too tall, he would stretch his front legs onto the lawn leaving his back legs on the porch in order to pee 😂. I say this, because he contracted leptospirosis. One moment he was ok and the next moment he was awake but unresponsive. Fortunately, our vet got us into Miss State Vet school the following day. Leptospirosis was not even on our radar! We thought he had a stroke or brain bleed or tumor. When the MRI was clear,😢 they decided to test for other possible causes. Fortunately he survived that episode. Within 3 months however he again became very ill within moments. We took him to ER Vet (satellite of vet school) and he died the next day from acute pancreatitis. I’m convinced we didn’t have him on doxycycline long enough and he probably should’ve stayed on it prophylactically.

I had a Jack Russell that was allergic to the vaccine. His whole face swelled and he was having trouble breathing. None of my other dogs have had that reaction, so still recommend the vaccine.

My dog always reacts severely to the Lepto vacc my vet has recommended not giving anymore. However, she did tell me of another client here near my neighborhood who did stop taking the Lepto vacc bc severe reactions, but then he contracted Lepto & died. So far the reactions mean days of pre & post vacc Benadryl, a pretty big & painful injection site swelling, a few days of anorexia & lethargy. Few times had to go on antibiotics when the swelling’s get tennis ball or bigger for a week or more. As scary as all this is every year, to know Lepto is still very much out there, it’s better than death. Loved this vid thank you!

I wonder if they'll ever develop another form of the vaccine that's less harsh on the immune system of some dogs? Or something that can work them up to fighting it off, maybe.

I've been getting lepto vaccines for my dogs for years because we live adjacent to wetlands teeming with all kinds of critters that could be carriers.

We don’t use the DA2PLP vaccine, we use DA2PP. We will administer the pepto if the pet is at greater risk (ex: lives near a body of water like retention pond, canal, etc), because rodents (big time carriers) will gather around those places at night and urinate on the grounds/banks

Thank you for this video. I have lost 2 dogs over the past 2 1/2 years to renal failure. Being a kidney transplant recipient, this was especially emotional for me. I feed my current dogs a raw diet trying to avoid losing another pet to renal disease. But, the raw feeding groups are extremely anti-vaccine, and they especially vilify the Leptospirosis vaccine, saying it isn’t even a fatal or necessary vaccine. I’ll take the diet knowledge, but pass on their other medical advice. Based on your advice, they are dead-wrong.

Lepto is certainly a nasty one. I had a 14 week old puppy that got it from our rural backyard. He started showing symptoms just 2 days before his appt to be vaccinated for it. Our amazing local ER/specialty clinic had him for 4 days doing aggressive supportive care and he pulled through, but it was certainly scary to have him get so sick, so fast. Then the whole zoonotic level of it and having to handle him with gloves, bleaching down all the spots he eliminated in the yard. It was quite the ordeal. Definitely a vaccine to discuss with your Veterinarian if you are in a risky area.

I'm a human with vasculitis. And I can say yeah it does affect like everything, and it's super sucks. I feel bad for any pet who has this.
Yeah the liver and kidneys are very vascular, which means they have a shitload of blood vessels. So when you combine having lots of blood vessels and disease that a tax blood vessels, you get a lot of stress on this organs. One time it migrated to my eye and that was also very uncomfortable.
