I recently had to take one of my kitties to the vet for a URI. Poor girl was congested and sneezing. There was a new vet at the practice, and he reminded me of you! He looked like you. And he was so good with my Lexie, who was born feral and gets very scared. He was kind, and I could tell that he really cares about animals. ^_^

My aunt had a cat some years ago who had this surgery. It absolutely saved his life. He was sadly diagnosed with Acromegaly a few years after that and lasted just another year. A vet tech at my town's clinic had the surgery done to save one of her cats. I believed the head vet had a specialist come to the clinic to perform the surgery. I don't think the tech had to take her cat somewhere for it.

My cat, named Lotto the Hutt, had two blockages back to back. This surgery was recommended but I opted not to in favor of changing his diet. I pulled him off kibble and onto wet food and never had a problem again. He is now raw fed and no longer a "Hutt" with his weight. 😉🙂

My sister's cat had this surgery as he constantly had blockages. He's 19, deaf, probably a bit senile, but never blocked again!

Hey doc can you maybe make a video on heatstroke? I used to work as receptionist/ assistant in the ER in SoFlo and that was one of our top emergencies. Mostly frenchies :(

That would be a good one. My vet clinic where I work had 2 Frenchies brought in during the summer and both had passed from heatstroke. They'd been at a different boarding facility and I believe had been outside all day in 100 degree heat with only limited water and no real shade. 1 of the Frenchies even an hour after death still had an internal temp of well over 100 degrees. It's absolutely awful. :(

My male had to get PU surgery when he was 4 due to crystal obstructions due to his diet. Once we changed food and moved him over to single ingredient treats, he's been doing great. He's 16 now and still going strong.

Uganda cat decades ago who had to have the procedure…he had obstruction after obstruction and did really well after the surgery, though the recovery was rough. This was back when animals weren’t thought to feel pain like humans. I could see he was suffering but could get the vet to give him pain meds.

It's only based on my personal experience, but all the cats I've known with frequent urinary blockages or UTIs eat mostly fish-based cat food. I've made that mistake, too. But after noticing that connection years ago, I cut back on the fish and started giving them more poultry or beef, and since then none of them have had urinary problems. Now I give mine fish once or twice a week, but not more than that. I can't say for sure that was the cause, but if you have a cat that blocks or has lots of UTIs and you feed them mostly fish, try weaning them off the fish and giving them other foods instead.

Yeah, PU surgeries can either be extremely common or rare in some areas. I like to think that water quality and climate affect how likely a cat is to become blocked.

My cat had this done. He had one blockage and they said this surgery was necessary. So I said do it.. they did it and I brought him home. All was well for maybe 2 months.. I came home from work and he was screaming on my bedroom floor.. blood everywhere.. abdomen distended. My local vet (not where his emergency surgery was done) was about 15 minutes away but we didnt make it in time. His bladder burst. I dashed into the vets office with him.. they took him back and a few minutes later he said we can do surgery or we can put him down.. what do you want to do. I said i feel like im torturing him.. so I had him euthanized. My vet said his urethra (whatever u call it after this surgery) had healed over because they did not put a shunt in. I wanted to sue but I couldnt stop crying whenever I spoke of him.. l loved him.. but also the day he died.. the screams in my car when his bladder burst.. His name was Toby and he loved to give me eskimo kisses.

I'm so sorry that you lost your Toby. I almost lost my Balder when the vet left a sponge inside of him and he developed a massive infection. Thankfully, he was so humbled by his mistake, that he agreed to pay for all his aftercare.

@@alphazenturbo wow.. sounds like a vet worth keeping. Mistakes can be forgiven.. neglect..not so much. With toby they said it would cost around 2k.. they ended up charging me over 4k. I really wish I could hav sued them.. at least for the cost of the operation.. but they went out of business like 2-3 months later. so I wouldnt have gotten far.

@@lushpaw1 luckily, he wasn't my regular vet, but was recommended to do the procedure. He was a cocky and arrogant and if he would of blown me off, I would of taken action. My regular vet is a saint and was the main reason he's still with me today.

First time I saw a cat strung up in the ER for just a blockage I was both horrified and amused at the same time. A PU surgery seems absolutely brutal!
