In general, the TI units are faster in response to inputs. The big ticket item though is maps. If you install a mapping card such as Navionics or the free C-Map Genesis which has a lot of map detail, then moving around the map with the cursor or when running down the lake can lag significantly on the Hook units, but is seamless with the TI units.
@@yotabirdman it’s basically an HDS carbon without the networking capabilities. It’s got the same hardware as a HDS carbon on the inside. Run the better Active target. It all depends what your needs are and what your running, if your satisfied with your setup. I run HDS’s myself
I found this video just in time. The user manual was too confusing for me. Perhaps I needed the step by step of your demonstration. I've had my Elite FS7 for a year but never could figure out how to set up anything so running default. Scared, I guess, to try and figure out how to set up the contour map and SOG. When I did try something, I accidentally lowered the image intensity, the whole thing disappeared, Aaaaarrrrgggg!!! Thank you so much for going through all these set ups. Yesterday I stopped at the tackle shop looking to replace my unit because I felt the Elite was too complicated for me. If you have Lowrance's ear, please ask them to publish a flow chart. You have saved me from a big mistake and given me the confidence to give it another try. Thank you! I must have watched 10 videos on setting up this unit (9 and 7 versions). Yours was the first one that was very, very helpful. I was considering hiring a local fishing and fishing tech legend, Alan Fong, to show me how to use my Elite. Not knowing how to use my tech tool is kind of embarrassing. Someone commented that the pace was too fast. It was but I understand why. I'm glad I can't wear out UA-cam's pause and replay function. On the charts the maps shows the river being the actual size to scale and when I get up river a lil bit it goes to a very thin blue line for the river .
@@Mdkayakangler alot of you settings are most likely going to be the same. Just a little tweak here and there. You're most likely going to use 800 kHz, on both side/downscan. 200 on sonar but if you want to keep a wider cone beneath you switch to 83. if jigging below you adjust scroll speed faster side. You might adjust your sonar offset a bit shallower. I am not sure how you have transducers mounted either. it's going to be minor adjustments here and there to tweak, and you'll find what you're most comfortable using and your preferences. It'd be easier for me to tell you more if I used a sonar out of a kayak, but I fish mainly super skinny water, less than 5'.
don't program it in demo mode. We're just doing it for the sake of the video so it looks like your on the water. Follow along with the video but use it in regular user mode. If you do it in demo mode you'll loose the settings
LOL. You make it look simple, by the end of the video i forgot what the start was. I've been trying to find why my FS unit looses contour lines when tuned off. i have to enable them every time its turned on. Any idea what im doing wrong??
Excellent tutorial. I'm buying two Elite FS 9's to replace my older HDS Gen 2 units before the rebate runs out end of June ($100.00 each). Hoping my shop here is as useful as you are (they seemed helpful on the phone). Couple questions. How much should I expect from them as far as setting up the two units for me (they are close to a ramp but don't know if they put boats on the water)? What are the advantages to networking the two units and is this something I should do? What is the difference between the Active Imaging 2-IN-1 and 3-IN-1 transducers and which one should I buy? Is it better to have a "thru the hull" or transom mounted transducer (current one is thru the hull)? I bass fish the TVA lakes on the Tennessee River (shallow fresh water) in a Triton Boat. Thanks again for your help, will be looking for more tutorials.
thank you for the kind words. networking for sure. Able to share waypoints, maps, side, down and sonar. The 3 in 1 is the same as 2 in 1 but with 2d sonar added in. You're in a fibreglass I take it? I personally like transom but I run aluminum. Through hull is harder to install and access. Run about the same maybe slightly cleaner on the transom mount. As far as the dealer, that all depends how good they are and whether they bother to program it out the door. are you getting it installed from there? I would use this video to help set it up and it will get you 95% of the way there and you will learn it better as well.

hi i just viewed your tutorial and it is great, i have learned a lot on how to operate my Lowrance, the only question that i have is how import waypoints from the SD card (from Hummingbird) to the Lowrance? thanks in advance
there is a way to export all waypoints and generally its done as a GPX file. Which is universal to most GPS type devices. The only caveat is some manufacturers wont export the added details, like the Icon, description, date/time to the GPX file. There are third party programs out there that will do that extra data points in those waypoints for you and export them with every data but last time I checked there was a fee on them. The lowrance system will read the GPX file. I do it all the time when I export from Google Earth to Lowrance.
For some reason I don’t have the option for depth in chart or side image only 2D sonar. I have structure depth but that’s it. I recently bought this elite FS 9 new and was faulty. Navico I believe sent me a used or refurbished unit. Could this be the issue? Should I reset to default settings. I’m also sitting in yard with the transducer stopped while setting up. But should be no issue from what I’ve read

My new Elite fs 7 constantly shows - - - for depth??? I have tried everything. I called Lowrance Tech support and was on hold for over an hour before they placed me with someone whom did not speak good English! I finally just hung up.
You can do these settings in demo mode or does it have to be in the water? Sorry for the dumb question. I had just heard somewhere that its not a good idea to run your lowrance with the transducer on unless its in the water to cool it.
the transducers are pretty durable but for best practice yes keep it in the water. If you're sitting in your driveway simply turn off the transducer and hit STOP. Do the settings, close as you can get them in the driveway until you're in the water. Also every lake, river, set of conditions your gonna tweak your settings anyways. When you are doing this video also have the demo mode off. In regular mode as if your in the water. Demo mode does not save settings.
I tried mine out today in florida like 6 feet of water read temp depth but didnt pick up any arches or fish o think its because its not set to my tranducer i didnt set it into the 3 in one
your super shallow. The sonar cone is very narrow, you're not going to see much being that shallow. You sonar cone is probably only around 2.5-3' wide at best. The deeper you go the better you'll see results

@@user-bn6pc4zj5p oh yeah and follow along with it for the base settings. You are still going to slightly adjust sensitivity, contrast and frequency for each new lake or area of a lake with different conditions. This will get you 98% of the way there
On my Elite FS I have speed over ground reading on my chart page but no speed over water readings in my sonar, downscan or sidescan modes. All I have is 3 dashes. The speed over water is checked in all of those modes?? Help please😊
you only really need speed over ground. The two readings are very similar. Over ground is the time it takes between two fixed objects on land, then the other is two fixed points over a place on water. do you have other gps on board, could it be using other GPS or pucks as the reading and not using the internal GPS in the head unit? I would leave speed over water unchecked. Just use speed over ground.
My Brand new Elite FS 9 doesn't have alot of these setting you are showing here ? I have zero icons on the lefthand side of my screen. This thing just shuts down when it wants, then doesn't fire up until it wants to. Very frustrating ! This'll probably be the last Lowrance product I buy.
Are you talking the menu settings on the right side of the screen or the overlays? Do you have proper voltage? And could there be a loose connection at the back of the unit, a wire connection like at the fuse, or at the battery? Sometimes this will happen if it’s wired with proper wire gauge too.
@@hookedntravel Thank you. I think it was voltage. I had 1 positive terminal tha was loose enough to cause that. On a couple of your screens it looked like you had a drop down menu on the left side. On thise same screens I didn't have those. Could you tell me why it doesn't seem to be picking up fish ? Ice got depth, water temp, coarse but zero fish when there's literally fish jumping all around my boat ? It didn't pick up even 1 fish after putting around for almost 3 hours ?
@@captainmorgan5106 it could be the main menu screen. Hit the gear icon and it will bring up the main menu. What’s the time stamp on the video so I know exactly what you mean? How deep are you? And do you have the sensitivity up?
@@hookedntravel When you're showing the "look ahead" info at 1:35 you have some icons on the left of the map. Mine doesn't have those Icons on the left. I was in multiple depth from 10' - 85' for about 3 hours. It never marked a single fish. It was showing the depths and bottom contour just fine. I just didn't know if I had to literally turn on the fish finder part of this. I did have to go in and turn on the depth finder. When I fired it up the very first time the screen just showed "stopped". I had to UA-cam that and that's when I actually found out how to find the depth finder menu. It was like everything was turned off from the factory.
@@captainmorgan5106 those icons are there for the NMEA network. Basically extra features to hook into the NMEA network for hooking up to the engine, or motorguide or vessel view. It’s advance features only needed if you have those networked with extra purchases.
Can you share with me what DC controller you use when demo'ing in the video. I cannot find any help on the internet from others using a setup to use my Lowrance Elite FS7 in the house to practice with setups. And doing it on the boat distracts from fishing time. Thanks
@@hookedntravel yes - my guess is I would need to buy a Lowrance power cable and a AC to DC power supply. And should I include an in-line fuse (what size fuse?). I am curious as a good brand power converter and I imagine it should be 12V/3amp?? One - as mentioned before, I would like to familiarize myself with it at home and not in the boat when I should be fishing, and more important, the last thing I want to do is fry the unit so I want to be very careful.
@@brianmeckes6567 another option you could get the lowrance power cable that connects into the cigarette power for the car. Then get a ad to dc adaptor. In-line fuses would be the same as what you run in the boat. 3amp
I have a problem? I have a hard time seeing the sonar screen while sunny and wareing sunglasses. Any tips? I have to bend down put my face right up to screen while shading area as best I can with my hand. Its like running blind when your driving boat do to not being able to see screen. It's the glare.
make sure the brightness is turned up all the way. Also no matter what kind of unit you have, polarized sunglass at certain angles will make digital screen shade out to black. Happens in cars/tvs/ etc.
@@hookedntravel You know I ware Polarized Sunglasses. I bet you thats it. I will turn the brightness up also to see if that helps any. Everyone on a boat I think wares Polarized glasses I would think.
when you set up your unit. Do not have it in demo mode. set it up as in regular mode on the water. Then follow along with the same settings we show in the video. We only use demo mode for display purposes and to simulate like you'd see on the water.

I have a NMEA 2000 network with a point 1 heading/gps that I use for console gps and heading for console and trolling motor unit. Also have a Motorguide Tour Pro on the network. Hey guys I love your videos and im asking for help here. I was fishing for lake trout yesterday and i was very irritated with my FS unit. I set it to general setting played with sensitivity up and down.. i was using 1oz jig with paddletail. I could hardly see the lure fall down for first 40’. I cought about 10 fish but I saw fish on screen only once or twice. My buddy with oler unit marked fish and lure non stop. I dont know what is going on. Unit did show air bubbles when i was bringing fish in.. also one other note.. about lets say 10!seconds i see noise marks on the screen not sure whats going on.. thats on 200mhz setting 83mhz cone is pretty clean. Please help
How many feet of water? General is usually set for 100’ for or more. For the algorithms that should be set on shallow still if it’s 70 or less. That 70-100 mark is that borderline between the two settings. Try one then the other. Also your transducer could be angled up or too far forward and your not getting the fish/lure in the cone. It’s all relative to how your boat is sitting the water. Next thing would be to check your actually getting your lure in the cone itself, underwater currents effect that a lot!!!! People don’t realize how much current is happening in a column. Especially deeper. It may simply be out of the cone. 200khz is narrow cone angle 22°, 83khz is 52° is gonna be wider beam. Is your buddy in another boat? Might be cross talk or trolling motor interference with 200. Could do a sonar defaults reset (not a unit reset). Just for the sonar. There’s a lot of factors with every brand of fish finder that may play a role. If you’ve knocked the transducer off a rock, your crystals maybe shot in it
@@hookedntravel im fishing out of my kayak in 120’ water, i have motorguide xi3 trolling motor on it with spot lock for jigging right above fish. I did notice allot if noise when my buddy pulls up close, i wonder if other boats are making the other noise. Im going out today
@@hookedntravel was back out there again, ran it on high chirp was little better but still not marking much fish at 120’. Lakers i caught were big fish so they should be showing up on fish finder i would think. From your experience do you see them allot better at that depth?
@@osilekpl79 mmm, you should be able to mark them no problem. I fish for big lakers at that depth as well. They won’t show as super thick lines. Further away they are the hooks will be thinner. Like in our sonar interpretation video, it’s about seeing the same size fish at 20, 60, 90 and 120. They won’t look the exact same. Is your colorline setting accidentally set down low? Try boosting it. Do you have the correct transducer labelled in the installation menu? Are you using your transducer that’s in the xi3 or a seperate 2d like the hst-wsbl?
Speed over ground is the speed of the boat with respect to the ground or any other fixed object such as fixed buoy or island. Speed through water is the speed of the boat with respect to the water such as anything floating on water. everyone just uses speed over ground as thats what everyone is used to with vehicles

@@jaydonohue5442 it may be like that if you don't have a gps signal (like in your house or garage), or you're not moving. Another thing, is you may have pointed it to use an external GPS puck instead of the internal. when your driving on open water does it still do that?
My elite fs does not give me an option to use sog in any of my other scans except chart, therefore when trolling I have to have my chart page up or I can't keep track of my speed . On these elite fs units is the speed over water readings suppose to work? Again my speed over water is checked on my overlay page but it just registers 3 dashes?? Is there a problem with my unit? There is no other gps units in use on my boat.....Thanks!
@@jaydonohue5442 I can't say for certain about the speed over water. As no one I know uses it. Are you on top of water while using it? are you in motion and not sitting in your garage? You might have to do a hard reset or make sure the unit is up to date
@@PopPopJoe Lake Erie and st.clair for the shop. Myself in Lake Nipigon (no Chips). I wouldn't be able to say for sure. Navionics or cmap would be a good start. If your in the salt there may be some private map companies that have logged alot of data for themselves and sell the maps. It may be beneficial for those maps depending on your area. I would ask around your local guides or pros and see what they run and whether they're true contours.
More options --> Orientation: heading up. And then below that is just a toggle on/off, toggle it on “Look Ahead” Button and it puts you at the bottom of the screen
you don't need an app to run the fish finder. Would you please elaborate on your problems? We see alot of problems from other manufacturers right now. No one brand is immune from problems.
Make sure the correct transducer is installed in the settings. Then make sure it’s capable of it and then select the frequency settings in the sonar menu

your super shallow. The sonar cone is very narrow, you're not going to see much being that shallow. You sonar cone is probably only around 2.5-3' wide at best. The deeper you go the better you'll see results
I have a Lowrance Elite FS 9 - I use it for SI. I set it up on my pontoon on the starboard side. I deploy the unit when I get to my target fishing area. I have another unit with the transducer mounted on the transom for traveling. My question is - Can I use my Lowrance Elite FS9 unit for GPS, while the transducer is out of the water, without damaging the transducer? Thanks, Bernie
Which unit are you asking about? Is it a high speed hst-wsbl transducer on the transom? Is it out of the water while your running?

yes you can. You can turn off the transducers in the menu system, good practice to turn them off when not in the water.

no you cannot. Its a more reliable connection with an ethernet anyways
how does he turn the machine on indoors with no GPS signal. Mine keeps saying no satellite signal.

On my Elite FS I have speed over ground reading on my chart page but no speed over water readings in my sonar, downscan or sidescan modes. All I have is 3 dashes. The speed over water is checked in all of those modes??

you only really need speed over ground. The two readings are very similar. Over ground is the time it takes between two fixed objects on land, then the other is two fixed points over a place on water. do you have other gps on board, could it be using other GPS or pucks as the reading and not using the internal GPS in the head unit? I would leave speed over water unchecked. Just use speed over ground.
Is the add on Ghost 3 in 1 transducer on the list of transducers in the FS ?
the 3 in 1 in the ghost is the active imaging 3 in 1 transducer. If its not their, then you would just set it to the ai 3 in1

I would get the Ai2 3 in 1. There higher end all in one transducer along and affordable. Comes with airmar 2d in it as well.

I have zero icons on the lefthand side of my screen.
This thing just shuts down when it wants, then doesn't fire up until it wants to.

Are you talking the menu settings on the right side of the screen or the overlays?
Do you have proper voltage? And could there be a loose connection at the back of the unit, a wire connection like at the fuse, or at the battery? Sometimes this will happen if it’s wired with proper wire gauge too.
@@hookedntravel Thank you. I think it was voltage. I had 1 positive terminal tha was loose enough to cause that.
On a couple of your screens it looked like you had a drop down menu on the left side.
On thise same screens I didn't have those.

@@captainmorgan5106 it could be the main menu screen. Hit the gear icon and it will bring up the main menu. What’s the time stamp on the video so I know exactly what you mean?
How deep are you? And do you have the sensitivity up?
@@hookedntravel When you're showing the "look ahead" info at 1:35 you have some icons on the left of the map.
Mine doesn't have those Icons on the left.
I was in multiple depth from 10' - 85' for about 3 hours. It never marked a single fish.
It was showing the depths and bottom contour just fine.
I just didn't know if I had to literally turn on the fish finder part of this.
I did have to go in and turn on the depth finder.
When I fired it up the very first time the screen just showed "stopped".
I had to UA-cam that and that's when I actually found out how to find the depth finder menu.
It was like everything was turned off from the factory.
@@captainmorgan5106 those icons are there for the NMEA network. Basically extra features to hook into the NMEA network for hooking up to the engine, or motorguide or vessel view. It’s advance features only needed if you have those networked with extra purchases.
Can you share with me what DC controller you use when demo'ing in the video. I cannot find any help on the internet from others using a setup to use my Lowrance Elite FS7 in the house to practice with setups. And doing it on the boat distracts from fishing time. Thanks

@@hookedntravel yes - my guess is I would need to buy a Lowrance power cable and a AC to DC power supply. And should I include an in-line fuse (what size fuse?). I am curious as a good brand power converter and I imagine it should be 12V/3amp?? One - as mentioned before, I would like to familiarize myself with it at home and not in the boat when I should be fishing, and more important, the last thing I want to do is fry the unit so I want to be very careful.
@@brianmeckes6567 another option you could get the lowrance power cable that connects into the cigarette power for the car. Then get a ad to dc adaptor. In-line fuses would be the same as what you run in the boat. 3amp
I have a problem? I have a hard time seeing the sonar screen while sunny and wareing sunglasses. Any tips? I have to bend down put my face right up to screen while shading area as best I can with my hand. Its like running blind when your driving boat do to not being able to see screen. It's the glare.
make sure the brightness is turned up all the way. Also no matter what kind of unit you have, polarized sunglass at certain angles will make digital screen shade out to black. Happens in cars/tvs/ etc.
@@hookedntravel You know I ware Polarized Sunglasses. I bet you thats it. I will turn the brightness up also to see if that helps any. Everyone on a boat I think wares Polarized glasses I would think.

when you set up your unit. Do not have it in demo mode. set it up as in regular mode on the water. Then follow along with the same settings we show in the video. We only use demo mode for display purposes and to simulate like you'd see on the water.

Hey guys I love your videos and im asking for help here. I was fishing for lake trout yesterday and i was very irritated with my FS unit. I set it to general setting played with sensitivity up and down.. i was using 1oz jig with paddletail. I could hardly see the lure fall down for first 40’. I cought about 10 fish but I saw fish on screen only once or twice. My buddy with oler unit marked fish and lure non stop. I dont know what is going on. Unit did show air bubbles when i was bringing fish in.. also one other note.. about lets say 10!seconds i see noise marks on the screen not sure whats going on.. thats on 200mhz setting 83mhz cone is pretty clean. Please help
How many feet of water? General is usually set for 100’ for or more. For the algorithms that should be set on shallow still if it’s 70 or less. That 70-100 mark is that borderline between the two settings. Try one then the other.
Also your transducer could be angled up or too far forward and your not getting the fish/lure in the cone. It’s all relative to how your boat is sitting the water. Next thing would be to check your actually getting your lure in the cone itself, underwater currents effect that a lot!!!! People don’t realize how much current is happening in a column. Especially deeper. It may simply be out of the cone. 200khz is narrow cone angle 22°, 83khz is 52° is gonna be wider beam.
Is your buddy in another boat? Might be cross talk or trolling motor interference with 200.
Could do a sonar defaults reset (not a unit reset). Just for the sonar. There’s a lot of factors with every brand of fish finder that may play a role. If you’ve knocked the transducer off a rock, your crystals maybe shot in it
@@hookedntravel im fishing out of my kayak in 120’ water, i have motorguide xi3 trolling motor on it with spot lock for jigging right above fish. I did notice allot if noise when my buddy pulls up close, i wonder if other boats are making the other noise. Im going out today

@@hookedntravel was back out there again, ran it on high chirp was little better but still not marking much fish at 120’. Lakers i caught were big fish so they should be showing up on fish finder i would think. From your experience do you see them allot better at that depth?
@@osilekpl79 mmm, you should be able to mark them no problem. I fish for big lakers at that depth as well. They won’t show as super thick lines. Further away they are the hooks will be thinner. Like in our sonar interpretation video, it’s about seeing the same size fish at 20, 60, 90 and 120. They won’t look the exact same. Is your colorline setting accidentally set down low? Try boosting it. Do you have the correct transducer labelled in the installation menu?
Are you using your transducer that’s in the xi3 or a seperate 2d like the hst-wsbl?
What is the difference between speed over ground and speed over water?
Speed over ground is the speed of the boat with respect to the ground or any other fixed object such as fixed buoy or island. Speed through water is the speed of the boat with respect to the water such as anything floating on water. everyone just uses speed over ground as thats what everyone is used to with vehicles

@@jaydonohue5442 it may be like that if you don't have a gps signal (like in your house or garage), or you're not moving. Another thing, is you may have pointed it to use an external GPS puck instead of the internal.
when your driving on open water does it still do that?
My elite fs does not give me an option to use sog in any of my other scans except chart, therefore when trolling I have to have my chart page up or I can't keep track of my speed . On these elite fs units is the speed over water readings suppose to work? Again my speed over water is checked on my overlay page but it just registers 3 dashes?? Is there a problem with my unit? There is no other gps units in use on my boat.....Thanks!
@@jaydonohue5442 I can't say for certain about the speed over water. As no one I know uses it. Are you on top of water while using it? are you in motion and not sitting in your garage? You might have to do a hard reset or make sure the unit is up to date

from a chip. In our area's navionics and cmap tend to be the best for maps

@@PopPopJoe Lake Erie and st.clair for the shop. Myself in Lake Nipigon (no Chips). I wouldn't be able to say for sure. Navionics or cmap would be a good start. If your in the salt there may be some private map companies that have logged alot of data for themselves and sell the maps. It may be beneficial for those maps depending on your area. I would ask around your local guides or pros and see what they run and whether they're true contours.

More options --> Orientation: heading up. And then below that is just a toggle on/off, toggle it on “Look Ahead” Button and it puts you at the bottom of the screen

you don't need an app to run the fish finder. Would you please elaborate on your problems? We see alot of problems from other manufacturers right now. No one brand is immune from problems.

Make sure the correct transducer is installed in the settings. Then make sure it’s capable of it and then select the frequency settings in the sonar menu
