  • In this video we finally get some weather dry enough to get some hedge cutting done. We then head back to the yard where dads got a puncture in the John Deere 3200 telehandler and the Mchale c460 has belt issues. Luckily the impending disaster was avoided. I also show you my entry for arable farmer of the year! 😂
    I hope you enjoy it.

      Thanks Stephen. I’m hoping to do a few more videos. Do some more whiteboard explanation stuff and then some others added in too. Won’t necessarily commit to extra videos every week but will try my best. 🤞
      Farming wise I think you’ll be about bang on. We’re very much livestock men and think that will be the way forward for us. 👍

    Good video James the wet winter has done alot of damage to crops all over the UK might be alot less grain and straw this year unless alot of spring crops planted🤔

      Went to the Lincolnshire and Yorkshire wolds this last 2 weeks and those crops look fantastic but they are on free draining ground. The rest however looks a bit of a mess.

    Hi James, we used to run a Teagle 8080 then went to a 1010 before moving to the c470 mchale we have now. Both were great machines on straw but we found they didn’t handle silage very well. Also they used do shear bolts if you got a chewy bale. The mchale will handle anything you throw at it compared.

      Hey Charles, that’s really interesting to know. Thank you 👍 the biggest attraction to the Teagle was the Bluetooth controls because I’m thinking we could go down to 2 tractors, but maybe I can pester Mchale enough to make one. 🤞

    Hello, how many hours are on the jd? I would be interested in buying it if you do decide to upgrade.

    Great video James. Love the new logo forgot to mention that before. I think a new shredder would be good to look at. Out of interest, what telehandler would you look at if you decided to trade the JD in? Also, shame about the arable. Maybe different varieties of grass is the way forward

      Thanks Kai! I think your right. Looking at our grass options now with a view to doing more grass and less arable.
      We havent demoed anything yet but having looked a few years back, it would likely be a JCB. I like them being British made too 🇬🇧

    There is a really mint JD 3400 in Cambridge machinery sale on Monday.

    • @baldysfarm
      @baldysfarm  4 місяці тому

      They are brilliant trucks. 3400 is a bit too big for the tight spots on our yard. Our 3200’is just getting a bit past it’s best. It’s been too good or else it would have gone years ago. 🙈

    You're very chilled about it all! What are you going to do about the lack of grain you'll have? And no straw either, I can see both being fairly expensive this year to buy.

    • @baldysfarm
      @baldysfarm  4 місяці тому +2

      I’m always pretty chill with things outside of our control. As long as I know I have done everything I could do, if it still doesn’t work out then that’s just life. We have a great arable neighbour who we buy a lot of straw from anyway. Think we will buy barley in from them too and with moving towards stabiliser cattle, we will have lower demand on grain anyway.

    Wheat sane round here
    And got water in our stored so think we are ready to give combine up down to 16 acres in spring bet all will be whole crop tbh

    • @baldysfarm
      @baldysfarm  4 місяці тому +1

      Yeh, we’re very tempted to pack up the arable all together and sell the combine etc. we have a lot of money tied up in arable kit and I think if we were honest about it, it doesn’t really stack up for us.

      @@baldysfarm I completely agree we only have old kit but still enough tied up we are putting in more MSS

    We run a teagle 8500. I’d say it’s same size as yours. The next one up is a 9500 which has 2 rotors and bigger back on. All chain driven so odd sheer bolt goes if it’s clapped straw. Also paint work I would say doesn’t look as good. But only thing we have done on ours is shortened bed chins like you did. Not tempted with a feeder wagon?

    • @baldysfarm
      @baldysfarm  4 місяці тому

      I think a 9500 would be a bit too big on the inside gangways but 8500 should still be good. Quite like the idea of a wider body as long as it will still get round the tight corners. 🤞
      Have thought about a feeder wagon but we would struggle with the design of a lot of our troughs. And we would need a dedicated tractors etc which is more expense. I also feel that it wouldn’t pay for itself as we are getting cattle doing 1.7 - 2.2kg DWLG on our system and can’t see that a feeder wagon would Improve that enough to get the cost back.
      Maybe with a lot more cattle it would make sense but as we are right now, I think this is simple, easy and a cheap way to feed. 👍

    • @andymarton6983
      @andymarton6983 4 місяці тому

      @@baldysfarm yes yours looks a very good system. We put 5 4/4 hestons though ours a day. Bought new in 2016 and not had a spanner near it. Only issue I can see with a lot of silage is the paint work. All chains and shafts so should do a good job on silage. I think it’s called a chieftain the higher speck with wider tyres and lights and body extension. A good excuse for a trip to LAMMA 👌🏼

    Hi James , do you do biannual hedge cutting ???

    • @baldysfarm
      @baldysfarm  4 місяці тому

      We have been yes. But might go back to annual. Bi annuals great for berry’s etc for birds but the hedges get gappy and don’t make good nesting habitat. We’ve seen a decline in small birds since doing it but that could also be bird flu 🤷‍♂️

    Can’t you convert the belts into chains instead on the shredder just a thought.

    • @baldysfarm
      @baldysfarm  4 місяці тому

      Maybe but I think it would be more work than it was worth and I’m not sure how the on/off engagement would work.

    • @baldysfarm
      @baldysfarm  4 місяці тому +2

      Oh I definitely would. Just the Teague dealer is closer and I like the idea of Bluetooth controls. Thinking of going down to 2 tractors moving forward so it would be on and off a lot more. But do love the Mchale. 👍
