I was only 3 yo when this song came out. I heard it on the oldies stations that were popular in the late sixties & seventies and always loved it. Sticks in my head. Silly song but not simple. The vocal arrangement is awesome.
I was visiting family at Kadena on Okinawa a few years ago, and we were on the boardwalk with lots of shops, etc and over the loud speaker this is one of the songs that came over the outdoor speakers....I couldn't believe I was hearing this and no one to dance with...it was a "frozen" moment for me to hear this and have teen memories decades old return to me.
What a great video from the 50’s Error. 1st I was just a baby when they sung this song. I turned One years old. The first time I heard Jan and Dean sing this song. I can’t remember when. Long time back. I became a fan of all there music. I love Do- Wop music 🎶 for all of there great harmony they sing in there songs. Thanks for sharing and bringing back a time when music was really music to listen to. Bill 😎
I love this "silly song". In retrospect, this is what made the oldies great. Anything could become a hit. This one deserved to be on top of the charts.
Used to go to lunch in those days and hamburgers were 19 cents and so was an order of fries. Lunch for under $.50 including a coke. By comparison, gas was usually around 25 cents per gallon, though if fluctuated up or down by as much as a nickel depending on supply and demand....that and they gave you a prize (free tumbler or such) for a fill-up and either S&H green stamps or Blue Chip Stamps for the purchase.
That was way in the beginning. I didnt see them do this, but I heard them played on American Bandstand (this show here) and saw the kids dance to it. Jan did a cool bit of dancing at the end. I like it .
10 YO when this came out. The summer of all summers in my youth. Cars and music were the coolest things. Coming back to the states for vacation in '59' music like this bring vivid memories. Sad part is kids today will never know what we had. All Gone...
I was only 1yr old in 59'when jan. & dean came out with baby talk its still a classic its like i said before its when the rock genre started evolving some great hits came from the 50s including the awesome doo wops groups but jan & dean had a classic 50s sound I wish they had a time machine just to be able to witness such great acts like these man what a blast from the past.
Pretty substantial difference from doo wop to surf. IMO their surf sound was way better, in part due to Jan's utilizing The Wrecking Crew. Surf City is a fantastic piece of music. While TLOLFP had a novelty touch to it, there was great music from The Wrecking Crew again.

I wasn't yet into the rock 'n' roll scene, since I was much younger, but I started listening to the great music on my 6 transistor radio (brings you right back to ancient technology!) by 1960. Still love these great Oldies! R.I.P. Jan Berry and Dick Clark, and thank you for all the great music!
a couple of years or so before this we were wearing a hoop underskirt, 1 or 2 sets of crinolines on top of that and then the flared skirt. To Jennie Lee we were dancing n spinning. This is the new look, music, beat and dance steps and teen clothing...Morphing...LOL
@Sanuk Jang Lery Not a Greaser? Flat top? Pompadour? DA? Quiff? Jelly roll? Breaker (Jerry Lee Lewis)? Teddy Boy? Slick back? Flat top with fenders? Elephant's trunk? (Evis curl)
The "flat- top " hair do was very popular whenI was in primary school, although our parents frowned on it.This song presages what was to become surf music.
This was so much fun to watch. What great memories. 50's music is the best! Love the outfits & the white bucs. So cool. I'm so grateful that I grew up during this time. Nothing else like it.
I was 13 at the time, the world was so wonderful & we were so INNOCENT. If I could turn back the time it would be to 1959-1960. PS: I think I am in love with the girl at 0:35.
I'm 16 and i agree. I'm disgusted at how disgusting the music is today and the way people dress to school nowadays is how my grandparents dressed when going to the beach 50 years ago... You're lucky you lived in that era where music had flavour. Now I'm stuck with the only music on the radio being "oh yea lick my back my neck and my crack" i mean the only thing that any music from today is about is drugs sex gangs and money. I call the 2000's the "IM BETTER THAN YOU HAHA ENVY ME BITCH" era of music. To escape the retarded culture of the 2010's, I spend alot of time in my room with my turntable listening to oldies like the beach boys, simon and garfunkel, jan and dean, frankie valli and the four seasons, the everly brothers, etc.
This was Jan & Dean's first appearance on Bandstand. Their manager, Lou Adler had Jan lighten his hair to give them a blond California look to make them stand out from the Philly boys.
it's amazing how powerful music is, this was my big brother Stan's [1945-2011] favorite song , I remember hearing it around the house on hi-fi record player, brings back memories of him, his girl friends, cars, his buddy's he would hang out with , I miss all of that. hope to play this song as a cover tune with my band. miss you brother,,,charlie
Yeah I was not even born yet until 1980 but my mom was born in 42 and when I was raised by her I didn’t listen to anything else but these oldies but goodies so I didn’t listen to my genre it was this songs I heard when I was a baby until I grown up to 39 and I still listen to this so awesome and the music from 1920’s to 1968 is what I love
I don't know what it is, but this r&r hit by Jan and Dean, stands out in front of the rest, at least when it comes to 1959, perhaps the doowop era in whole although "I Founf Carol", holds a place in my memory box...she came onto the charts a few years later. Anyway those crewcuts looked neat on certain guys but not with me, a few of my classmates wore 'em and like I said looked neat. Anyway everytime I play this hit I have the same thing to say to myself "It's my Fav & so is Jan and Dean. Thx!
I was born in 1952 and was 7 when this song hit. Bob Dillow, I would ALSO turn back the clock without a second of hesitation!! I feel sad for the young people today. They will never know a carefree, innocent, secure life of simplicity. We boomers, were the lucky ones.. Remember ......... Lucy and Ricky had TWO twin beds!!! ?? Hah.
In my opinion, music that is played on radios now of days is completely terrible. And I also believe that most teenagers these days need to learn respect, common sense, common courtesy, and to dress more properly. Not to offend you, Maryellen. Heck, I'm a nineteen year old adult, and even I know how to dress and act properly. I also listen to oldies, which I don't like to call old. I also dress like someone from fifty years ago. I also have over one-thousand and six-hundred and fifty songs on my iPod. I also have over sixty records that are mostly originals; meaning that almost none of my records are re-prints. All of the songs that I have mostly date from the 1950's to the mid 1960's.
History Man, how on earth did you offend me? I am very impressed and proud of you that you realize the lack of quality and heart in most of today's music. You're NOT ALONE, but a minority, I'm sure, who gets it. You're RIGHT about the youth of today having little respect for basically anything or anyone. It's more sad for you guys than anyone else. But times change. Granted, there were some very silly ones which were recognized as such like this one, Baby Talk. But listen to Little Old Lady. They really redeemed themselves! Hah. But....: Flying Purple People Eater and Surfin Bird! WOW. Unreal but FEW. Baby Talk just epitomized the era for the reasons I wrote. However the songs back then were beautiful, innocent, sweet, full of soul filled heartfelt emotions almost always based on young love. The harmonies were great and they didn't have all the tech equp they have today. Hah. I want to post a very old one by the Fleetwoods that will knock you out. I've recorded myself singing this with them and never get sick of hearing them. It wasn't just the harmony, but the emphasis and volume of their voices strategically placed. Will post it next. It's one of my faves. Keep listening History Man and move on up to the 60's and early 70's BEFORE we lost it with DISCO. Ughh. Stones, Zeppelin, Zombies, Association, Beau Brummels the totality of the British Invasion, all at Woodstock and MANY MORE. Just don't hear that talent anymore. Keep listening and congratulations on your good taste!! ;)
I checked in Jan. of '46, so I totally agree. Can you imagine the song called "Sukiyaki", sung in Japanese, being released today in the US? And speaking of the Lucky Ones, may I recommend that song by the group Mudhoney, just for a little perspective? Rock on, people.
WOW. I REMEMBER this one!!! It WINS GRAND PRIZE........THIS is CLASSIC PERFECTION. You hit the jackpot with this one. It captures every ingredient of the era. It IS the epitome of the day!!! The words, the moves, haircuts, hair do's, clothes, chewing gum with wild abandon!!! THIS ONE beats all others!!! :o) What a find Doc.
I agree with all of you! I put this on my phone several times a month. There are so many times I wish I could go back to those times. God bless Jan and Dean!😊
Wow, what an amazing performance by amazing musicians. Perfect to the times, captured the 50's perfectly like you said. This video should be preserved for future generations to see what the 50's looked and sounded like. I can't say enough good about this video. Doo Wop at its best!! Man where they good. Thank you Jan (Rest Easy my friend), and Dean for being the best of the best and entertaining all of us for all the years you guys did. G-D bless!!
This particilar video should win an award...and put in the rock and roll video hall of fame, did jan and dean ever dress sharp, even if those jackets......they'd still look okey today on a couple of punks that were known to imitate jan and dean, One thing is, i suggest they wear a pair of snug, very faded & tattered jeans along with a pair of orange nikes to offset the jacket....very coool!.
When I look at Jan & Dean, I can't help but think that they were probably two of the nicest guys around. They don't come any easier than this pair, they always dressed to look sharp, them and their crewcuts made 'em easy on the eyes and their music, altho it is coined doowop, was in a class of it's own. They sang of surf, girls, cars and even had a hit on a skateboard. If it had been Janice & Dean, they'd of gotten married!
Back when music wasn’t trash modern pop with no real voices or real instruments, I mean I was literally surprised it was there real voices even I knew it couldn’t be faked back then!
Nicely choreographed and performed. Best in that respect I have ever seen is Dion and The Belmonts, I Wonder Why. Check that out if you haven't seen it, it is amazing.
took me a long time after hearing the words they were singing about a 5 year old loving a 3 year old...great song love this video of them dressing up with blonde hair and white shoes!!! who didn't want to look and act live these guys back then!!!
yea sorry white bucks back in '59 I was twelve and would watch the dick clark bandstand as he would always have the singers I would hear on my transistor radio and these two singers we just the coolest guys around wearing outfits that look so sharp and wearing them well!!!
Yes, in growing up ,they were my favorite singers also. I can even remember when their songs came out and where I was when I heard it. They were the best singers.
When did you first start listening to oldies, John? I'm nineteen, going on twenty this year, and I listen to oldies. I have over one-thousand and six-hundred and fifty songs on my iPod. And I also have over sixty records at home. Nearly all of the songs that I have and listen to date from the 1950's to the mid-1960's. And nearly all of the records that I have are not re-prints.
@@cruisebumify Actually, it was called a flat top with fenders (longer on the sides and combed back). It was one of the "looks" I sported growing up in S Cal in the late 50's-early 60's.
If you can get the connection on their dance/routine moves, then you will recognize who Mike of the Beach Boys fame got his moves from. LOL Also, that footwork/dance that is done at the end of this song by Jan and Dean is the "Be-Bop." granny69
O'h I see Heart and Soul to the right! Gosh I loved that song. My older sister handed me down that 45 record. 15 to 20 years later my niece knew the song while a very young girl in elementary school (she was in the band with her flute)I remember it as a rare beauty. When my niece was playing it with her flute I just assumed that it was a great song even before Jan n Dean did it. At the time I thought it was the best song (1961) Jan n Dean ever did. Maybe it is a classic that everybody knows done by somebody, but to me it sounded as much as a Jan n Dean song as any Jan n Dean song could ever be. HEART AND SOULD. Worth putting into You Tube's Search Engine!
I didn't know this rare beauty went all the way back to 1959! I thought Brian Wilson put Jan n Dean on the map with Surf City. Anyways it's such a romantic cool song! Also back in the 60's you were lucky to get one OLDIE BUT GOODIE a day on the radio. Wow, what a great song even before Surf City. Why do I love older Jan n Dean songs ( even Jan n Arnie, like Gotta get a date for Saturday Night, what ever happened to Arnie) but still find Little Old Lady From Pasadena STALE?!
Jan & Dean were great looking guys. I wish teenagers today dressed as nice as these two.
You can always go to Hugo Boss, but there aren't any jobs left. Tankyou leftist politicians and idiot carbon footprints AGENDAS.
I feel like I'm the only one that actually dresses nicely and doesn't wear PJ'S
Agreed! Very classy.
Sad to see music like this gone. Jan and Dean will always be remembered especially by the baby boomers.

This still beats the heck out of what passes for music these days.
2:17 of good clean singable fun 🙂

What a cute song from a fine group. Miss those days very much!
I was born in 1955! I love this! Wish I could go back to my childhood!
I was born in 2007 and I love this stuff. When ever my parents aren't home I dance to this song
I was only 3 yo when this song came out. I heard it on the oldies stations that were popular in the late sixties & seventies and always loved it. Sticks in my head. Silly song but not simple. The vocal arrangement is awesome.
Aw the good old days.
I'm 63 & still love this silly & lovely song...r

Can you believe these guys were only 19 and 18 in the video? This is one of my favorite doo wop songs. I was 10 when this came out.

Great song
Being a product of the 60’s, I grew up on the Golden oldies. These guys are my favorite. 🤟🏽🤟🏽🤟🏽🤟🏽🤟🏽
Great song. It takes me back to the days of Bobby socks, ten cent cokes, and a hamburger and fries for under two dollars.
What is amazing we are now great grand parents and still bopping to these oldies but goodies.
"Will I still joke around...Will I still dig the sound....When I grow up to be a man?"

I miss great tunes like this.
So innocent, good and memorable.

Perfect harmony!
Even though i was only born in 1957 i still remember hearing Jan and Dean and dancing around the living room to Little old lady from Passadena
Pretty substantial difference from doo wop to surf.
IMO their surf sound was way better, in part due to Jan's
utilizing The Wrecking Crew.
Surf City is a fantastic piece of music. While TLOLFP had a novelty touch to it, there was great music from The Wrecking Crew again.

One of the best vocal songs from the late 50s
a couple of years or so before this we were wearing a hoop underskirt, 1 or 2 sets of crinolines on top of that and then the flared skirt. To Jennie Lee we were dancing n spinning. This is the new look, music, beat and dance steps and teen clothing...Morphing...LOL
Love this song. High school memories
Very cool!!!!
Flavorific! Oh aren't those guys with their crewcuts and white bucks just the Ginchiest!! LOL!
Ginchiest.....Wow, talk about Ed Byrnes!! This was one of the last "Do Wop" songs of the era. I prefer the Surfing and Cars songs they did later. ;-)

Saw these guys twice in the 90's at Oldiesfests. They were great!
comments that I hope never get lost in time
1959. Really great year for someone in their mid-teens.
The "flat- top " hair do was very popular whenI was in primary school, although our parents frowned on it.This song presages what was to become surf music.

A very nice and unusual sound for the time 1959.
what a great time to grow up, songs were the best and meant something
what does this song mean?
Thisis one of my favorite songs performed by them. You just can't get music like this now a days. So sad!!
Love them so much! RIP Jan!!!
Saw them in 85 and 86.Awesome shows!

Heard this over the radio and used my phone to id it.
This was Jan & Dean's first appearance on Bandstand. Their manager, Lou Adler had Jan lighten his hair to give them a blond California look to make them stand out from the Philly boys.

yea sorry white bucks back in '59 I was twelve and would watch the dick clark bandstand as he would always have the singers I would hear on my transistor radio and these two singers we just the coolest guys around wearing outfits that look so sharp and wearing them well!!!
Yes, in growing up ,they were my favorite singers also. I can even remember when their songs came out and where I was when I heard it. They were the best singers.
This may be the one performance that Dean took seriously.
They are not just oldies but goodies. Jan and Dean really touched people in the heart. Glad I lived long enough for you tube. Thank you.
Hi guys I'm a christian you may already know him but do you wanna know jesus?
That is totally cool. Great video. Thanks for posting it.
miss my sisters
Fantastic Doo Wop!!
Great song, great performance and very severe haircuts.
Haircut style was called 'flat top'. flat top was popular late 50s, early 60s.
@@cruisebumify wish it would make a comeback
@@cruisebumify Actually, it was called a flat top with fenders (longer on the sides and combed back). It was one of the "looks" I sported growing up in S Cal in the late 50's-early 60's.
Super👍👍👍👍🥰😍💕💕💕🌺🤩
me gustan las canciones de jean and dean me parecen muy representativas de el doowop
How can they not be in the R & R H.O.F.?
If you can get the connection on their dance/routine moves, then you will recognize who Mike of the Beach Boys fame got his moves from. LOL Also, that footwork/dance that is done at the end of this song by Jan and Dean is the "Be-Bop." granny69
What can you say! The best dance ever.
Heel herkenbaar voor die tijd begin van de swinging time.
This was my favorite by Jan & Dean.A+
YES!!!!!!! Terrific!
Nice to see Dean singing lead.
Check out their song "Like a Summer Rain". 100% Dean.
Blase' response from the audience." Oh I just loved their white bucks; weren't they the ginchiest! LOL. Just love the 50's.
California doo-wop, love it, great sax, too
Love the HAIR! lm

Love this song thank you
