- On this date in 1964, JAN & DEAN were on American Bandstand performing their single SIDEWALK SURFIN' (Aug 22, 1964).
Written by Brian Wilson (music) and Roger Christian (lyrics), SIDEWALK SURFIN' was recorded as a single and then appeared on the 1964 album Ride The Wild Surf, and later on the Little Old Lady From Pasadena album.
The song reached #25 on the Billboard Hot 100 on October 31, 1964.
Jan Berry, Dean Torrence's partner in the Jan and Dean duo, wanted to write and compose about a sport other than surfing.
He came up with the idea to make music about skateboarding. After trying, unsuccessfully, to come up with a song about that sport by himself, he decided to go with the Beach Boys' song "Catch a Wave," a song drawn from the group's 1963 album Surfer Girl. Berry asked the composer, Brian Wilson and Wilson's then-current lyricist associate, Roger Christian, to rewrite it. They complied, and eventually came up with "Sidewalk Surfin'," which is "Catch a Wave" with different lyrics about skateboarding.
My wife and I saw Jan and Desn at the state fair years ago a few years before Jan died. Jan was messed up from a car wrecks from years earlier. I love their songs and was glad I got to see them live.
Sounds like Catch a wave that the beach boys sang in the mid 1960s.
Lip syncing at its worst, so fake!
This is the same melody as the Beach Boys' "Catch a Wave." Could listen to both for hours on end!
Jan was awesome ! ❤watch “little old lady from Pasadena” video. Its great! 🎉🎶🎶
The colorized version !
The same tune as Beach Boys “Catch a Wave”, but different lyrics.
No doubt Brian Wilson had a hand in this.
But Jan & Dean sounds much better than BB Catch a Wave
Sounded just like the BBOYS🎶🎶😃
❤😂🎉😅😊! So very right 👍🏿▶️! So very true 😂😊! 2:02
@@rogerdean5757but Brian Wilson wrote both songs
Yep, Brian Wilson wrote it and Rodger Christian wrote the lyrics… It’s a dead nuts clone of The Beach Boys hit “Catch a Wave”…
and kids thought skate boards were a new thing that is the Wrecking Crew playing back there
Real…awesome music !!! Love it !
Never knew anything about them until I say the TV movie Deadman's Curve (they weren't very big in the UK and in 1964 I was 7). But once I saw that film I fell in love with their music and now have a number of their original albums and CDs.
Maybe you remember the scene where Jan was pulling Dean (while on his skateboard) through town in a Corvette, while the song "Sidewalk Surfin'" was playing. Thought it was the highlight of the movie.
Dose anyone remember there song popcile or bop bop on the beach
Bop Bop On The Beach. From the Karate Kid movie !!!
there was a Popsicle Ice cycle song
For kids from the Midwest, this was the only surfing available.
@@oldermusicloverI remember it quite well. Turns out it was their LAST Top 40 hit, entering there on June 18, 1966, peaking at #21, while staying in the Top 40 for six weeks. Sadly Jan Berry was critically injured in a car accident on April 12, 1966, two months before "Popsicle" entered the Top 40. Little did we know.
@@garyfaught3769 I dont remember that one but do remember reading about the accident later on I was a kid when It happened
Bust your buns!
Yeah,i used to ride goofy foot, it was real flat in our area, but there was one house in the subdivision that had a curved "hill"of a driveway, and it was vacant for a while when skateboards first came out. hang ten, then grab the front of the board, sit down on it, then lay down on it,while crossing your arms and closing your eyes, thats a coffin, best done while going downhill so you can keep going;to get up, reverse process-yeah, you gotta be 10 years old to do it!!!
Yikes!!😅
❤havent heard his on decades...remembered every word..
Lol
Loved it then love it now
Jan was so handsome. Such a shame what happened to him
What?????
@@pjj9491 he was hurt real bad,,,car accident..was never the same
I know he was freekin handsome
I saw them perform in the late 70's. It hurt to see him but still pretty awesome. The crowd (me included) cheered him on and it was amazing......
@@pjj9491He was in a car accident and suffered severe brain damage. Incredible he survived..... affected his mobility more than anything.
Love these guys !❤
Skate boarding…side walk surfing. Fun, especially when the sidewalk is downhill.
Loved this, but the convenience of sidewalks weren't available to my area.
Too bad most, if not all the performances on bandstand were lipsyncd.
Way too expensive to have full bands/orchestras for live performances. It was simply about promoting the artists and their records. Still entertained millions of viewers.

Wrecking crew
didn't atlantic city have a riot at the democratic convention there that year and the cops attacked everybody on the boardwalk!?
I'd much rather get rolled up in the ocean, than tar and concrete.
Jan the genius a smart guy who thought he can do anything found out the hard way, and self destruct ,and ended up the opposite from smart with a shortened unpleasant lifespan😢😢
Copied Beach Boys.
They did not. Jan & Dean came first
@@ventues9751 your right!
