    I know this is almost 4 years old but I had to say thank you. Of the hundreds of videos I have watched on the Helix, gain drop before the amp and another after it made all the difference for me. I'm getting exactly the tone I was looking for. Thank you!!!

    ugh finally!!!! I have been searching for a video like this since I got my helix, I am a rookie when it comes to electric guitar and all the equipment that goes along with it. I want a good clean tone and go into distortion for heavy parts of songs, and then go back to the clean tone for the more intimate parts of songs

      You can also just use the distortion blocks and a clean amp for that. plenty of options!

    very very cool trick here Steve S. never would think the Revv Purple could be cleaned up that much. Great job. Great idea to use with other favorite amp that you dont want a separate preset but juse 1 preset and use snapshots to great a BIG change in sound. You're the best. keep it up!

    Personally I like to build my clean tones from "high" gain amps. After rolling down the distortion and volume knobs, they sound more "warm". Not sure is right term. I learned this trick when playing with tube amps. Besides Helix works really well when cleaning the dirty amps.

    I'm gonna try this with the Legacy Drive in the HX Effects so I have a clean channel with my Origin 20 in 4cm. Drive all the way down with a comp is close but still dirty.

    This is one area I’ve found to be tedious on the Helix. My new go-to for clean is the Roland Jazz Chorus model, or a Fender Twin but I’ve been finding the Roland to be even cleaner at high volumes. The issue I have with using a dirty amp and cleaning it up is volume consistency throughout my presets. I have one preset with two amp heads but they can’t be on the same processor because there’s not enough DSP so I have one on path 1 and one on path 2; so if that doesn’t affect your effects signal paths that’s one way to do it also.

    • @SteveSterlacci
      @SteveSterlacci  4 роки тому +2

      Hmmm... I didn't have a hard time balancing the volumes using my DAW. I keep them both around -12db. I would say if I used this preset for more than this demo I would use a compressor for the clean tone. But volume wise they matched up fine

    • @JohnSpo
      @JohnSpo 4 роки тому

      Steve Sterlacci i try to keep my outputs as close to 0.0 as possible throughout but sometimes I need to boost those cleaned up amps a lot to get them even with it when it’s driven. I’m trying to not get into a messy situation where every preset and volumes within the presets are different.

  • @dannyharris6067
    @dannyharris6067 3 роки тому

    You can also achieve the same effect by using a deluxe comp before the amp and lowering the output gain of the compressor on snapshots. I usually set the gain of a high gain amp at 2 and use the compressor to raise or lower my gain from clean to high Gain.

    • @SteveSterlacci
      @SteveSterlacci  3 роки тому

      good call! I am not a big fan of compression so this works for me!

    • @dannyharris6067
      @dannyharris6067 3 роки тому +1

      Yeah I'm not a massive fan of compression either, but I run the compressor ratio at it's lowest setting so that it's really compressing. But I'm able to simulate rolling the volume down on my guitar by lowering the output level of the compressor. Great vids by the way bro.

    • @SteveSterlacci

  • @hardstones17
    @hardstones17 3 роки тому

    so I have managed to do this easily however it has a VERY loud pop when toggling between snapshots, enough to warrant negating even doing this for me personally. Is there any way to really fight that loud clipping or is it inherently there? I presume its due to such a sudden change in gain structures creating the pop. it is NOT pleasant at all in headphones, almost blew out my ears I think LOL. I think I'll just stick to my favorite clean amps and use external OD/Distortion to save on precious DSP on the stomp for more things.

    • @SteveSterlacci
      @SteveSterlacci  3 роки тому

      check that your impedance isnt on AUTO and try it again. see if that makes a difference

    • @hardstones17
      @hardstones17 3 роки тому +1

      @@SteveSterlacci No difference at all, I simply don't think this method will work for super high gain stuff as it sort of acts like a real life 1 channel amp being smacked with a sudden increase in gain on the input. Afterall the input is suddenly going from -28db for me to -0db and the output doesnt change as fast, therefore I get that massive volume spike for a split second. It acts like I turned on a huge boost for a split second and good lord it hurts. I do use hot pickups if that is of any importance, Hot rails and JBs.
      Really wish L6 would introduce a way to have multichannel amp models that can be toggled instead of having them be separate! I know LT and Floor have separate paths to simulate this but Stomp users can't, not unless you sacrifice nearly 50-70% DSP and run two amps that toggle between one another on a single path. This is really annoying as I wanted helix stomp to be my amp, cab, and modulation solution. I cant effectively use most of the high gain models I want and still have cleans unless I forgo using modulation or use less desirable onboard solutions.
      So far only using preamps gets what I want but is still DSP heavy. I do ultimately achieve my goal with it and can eek in two or so modulations in my chain but its in no way flexible. I guess I could see about getting a bigger board and getting an external Mod solution and let the stomp be my Amp, cab, and maybe wah once I get an expression pedal.
      for now I'll stick to external OD/Dist or preamp/distortion blocks into clean amps till I upgrade to a Quad Cortex or whenever the new helix family shows up. imo I feel going from clean to high gain is an area the stomp just seems to struggle with. Luckily the Jazz Rivet and Archetype clean are my goto's for injecting dirt into and experimenting with so once I find a good external dirt that hits 80s hair metal to modern metal like Rammstein or Korn, I will be happy.

    • @hardstones17
      @hardstones17 3 роки тому +1

      @@SteveSterlacci Coming back to this to report I have found that it all depends on the amp of choice! the cartographer is easily the best option as it clean up nicely and there is basically no need for a gain block with it either! all done on the amp itself. I was trying to do it with the Revv and it seems that unless you do it gradually with super clean to super high depending on amp model you will have to make it a gradual sweep rather than an instantaneous setting swap via snapshot. Glad I was able to find a solution till I can get my hands on an expression pedal. its so nice not having to use two amps on one chain which is totally unnecessary. Cheers!
