  • Testing how the power and accuracy is effected by removing the choke and crown.. from the lothar walther barrel in my Anschutz 9015
    Ive now reached the limits of the 9015 regualator...
    I'm doing a few experiments to find out the maximum power the 9015 can make whilst still remaining sub12 and curiosity also got the better of me ,so it was range tested before the barrel was re crowned and fully finished. Definitely a very surprising result but i wouldn't recommend it!
    Im experimenting with various slugs and had to try a choke less barrel, don't worry it has been fully finished properly now..
    the slugs are the new jsb ko mk2 10.03 gn in .177
    the pellets are jsb heavy 10.34gn in .177
    the rifle is an Anschutz 9015 , a dedicated target air rifle
    it's the first time ive been able to wind the 9015 up to its maximum power, i was surprised how nice the shot cycle was even maxed out
    the barrel has remained accurate with the jsb heavies at all stages of the test, theres some very interesting characteristics with the power and accuracy of the slugs and some further testing is required
    I may end up fitting the barrel into my airmaks katran as that has a larger regulated volume, however i'm really curious about the new epic2 air rifle so might wait until they are available later in the year.

    Hi that was a great experiment. I have learned a lot. I have an unregulated short carbine/pistol with a 12mm OD 10.6inch .177 barrel. I wanted to add a regulator but to do that i needed to extend the barrel(meaning longer shroud) because the plenum would extend the air cylinder making it impossoble to plug in the suppressor. I was afraid that a 4 or 4.5 inch barrel extension tube would affect accuracy. I see that the long metal extension tube over the short barrel does not affect accuracy. 👍

    I’m not sure about the affect a choke has on a pellet but having bought several Chinese made PCP such as the Nova Vista Liberty’s, and a few Air Venturi Avenger’s…I have noticed the crown on the end of the barrels is nonexistent! Literally looks like the used a hacksaw and cut it roughly off. I have always been told the crown can make or break a barrel’s potential for accuracy. It hasn’t had any affect on the accuracy of these barrels because I swear I hit the barrel lottery. Very accurate indeed.

      Hi cubleycat, have you still got a channel running?
      Yeah too many variables in the vid but I get impatient😆
      There's definitely a correlation between the shorter barrel length and then raised reg pressure and volume to getting the slugs running better at our sub12 speeds.

    5:18 I had the same reaction on that 5th shot…. My brain would have 🤯 if that 6th shot landed in the same hole as the 2nd shot. Not gonna lie I was a bit disappointed when the 7th grouped with the 3rd & 4th shots.

      Morning Jon, I had a play out at 45yds in the wound up format with the slugs. 25mm knockdowns no bother atall,didn't have time for some groups on paper but I will..
      The heavies just keep on going where you want them. They have a much broader working range of speeds and aren't really affected by the barrel length as such.
      Eventually I'll pull a few of my old carbine hft rigs onto the channel, there's some really cool stuff there with sub12" barrels.
      Next thing is to find some much faster twist rate barrels, that will potentially be where I find some more gains downrange. 😉

      @@tillysgunstocks I'm getting on really well with the B8's but I would like to give heavies a go at some point as I know a lot of people swear by them. I hope you can find yourself a couple of faster barrels to try, that would be really interesting to see if it unlocks the potential for slugs at sub 12 power.

    guessing the annie barrel is a competition barrel compared to a standard lw match barrel so would the choke be different between that and the katran barrel? i find my katrans are very pellet size fussy the same with my brocock sniper

    I'm interested that your actually posting up this testing.
    Did you run lube on the slugs?
    JSB have definitely got clever at building efficient pellets I get about an extra.5-1ftld from Hades in both .22 and .177.
    For your testing my suggestions would be to try and bracket extreme ends, like really high reg pressure then try tight med open transfer (if adjustable) then same with hammer tension like not a lot to heavy at a low reg. Just to try and get an idea what makes the biggest difference, obviously different porting and valves inside different guns won't behave the same.
    So far I am still very interested in these slugs would love something better in the wind for NV I can't see the wind at night, but really will stick with pellets sub12 and anyone wanting to run slugs for pests should just look at going FAC jump up to .22 and be able to run whatever speed they work at no trouble.

    • @tillysgunstocks
      @tillysgunstocks  Рік тому +1

      These slugs work well from around 700fps , which is easy to do and they would still be sub12 at 720. However... Then you run an efficient pellet through and it'll be over power.
      The challenge right now is reducing the difference in speeds between the slug and pellets so to keep both sub12 and in their best efficiency range.
      The 9015 I'm not going to mess about with the valving as it's so efficient for its pellet setup and is really at its safe limits in the video. The next tests will to be run the barrel in another rifle that I can easily adjust the valving and regulator pressure/volume to work out some tunes that get it where I want it and stays legal with pellets and slugs.
      Once I had re crowned it at the end of the vid, the results are very surprising and give a good indication as to the best speeds to be aiming for😉

      @@tillysgunstocksmaybe try a lighter pellet (jsb8.44) , the extra speed on the lighter pellet will help buck the wind the same way the extra weight works for the jsb heavies .
      should still keep you under the sub12 limit .

    I noticed your chrono always had fac illuminated on every shot, I used to have one like that as well but I had to enter the pellet weight before using a specific brand so it could calculate if it was sub 12 ft/in or fac? Du you enter this on your chrono before u shoot a specific brand?

    • @tillysgunstocks
      @tillysgunstocks  Рік тому

      The combro is tethered to a blue shot Android link. The blue shot does any power calculations I need and is an external power supply. The actual chrono itself is set up for .22 air arms field pellets. Which of course if it was running them at the speeds of a typical .177 that I'm running ,the combro would think it is Fac. Having said all that once you spend a fair bit of time using the chronos you soon do the math in your head and don't bother inputting the pellet weight, just working off the pellet speeds for your known batches of pellets.

    Would a longer unchocked barrel be better for the slugs to allow them to achieve a greater muzzle speed?

    • @tillysgunstocks
      @tillysgunstocks  Рік тому +3

      Hi mate, it's no bother to get the slugs up to around the 700fps mark with around 14-17" of barrel in our usual rifles, the biggest engineering hurdle that stops up from reaching that speed is keeping the pellets sub 12 when the slugs are around 700fps. The heavies would be well over. Closing that gap between slugs and pellets is what I'm working towards 😉
