Nice review mate, I owned an 86 and found the engine was it's biggest fault, while the chassis and dynamics were sublime. I haven't driven the second gen but I think the new powerplant should address the deficiencies of the original. Nice Z4 by the way, those n52 engines are a gem, I've driven an 130i with the 3.0ltr in a manual it was incredible to drive, perfect chassis and feedback from the steering while the rev happy 6 made it a great package. I am sure the Z4 would be even more enjoyable with the lower centre of gravity.
I live over in Tassie and have a manual 86 with headers, 3" catback, intake, aftermarket clutch (which feels great along with the notchy shifter) and an ECU tune. It still isn't crazy fast and some hills I floor it up I think are quicker in my daily Golf TDI! But when it does get up in the revs it sounds incredible and goes pretty well too. The tyres are still stock 205mm wide so with the extra power bump it goes sideways a bit too easily.
from what ive seen of tassie in my time on street view maps, youve picked maybe the perfect drive for your roads down there mate. I imagine it would be awesome with a little bit of boost just to help with those uphills but what does it even matter aye?
I’m currently building GT86 with Honda K24 motor turbo, excitement trough the roof Toyota makes best RWD chassis,Honda makes the best 4 cylinder Engines the almighty K24a2
Totally agree that the 86/FRS feels claustrophobic on the inside. Had a chance to drive my friends 86 and I couldn't handle the cramped space inside. It might be a really cool car but definitely not for me.
Excellent reveiw bro and timely as im thinking about selling my supercharged NA mx5 to buy either a Z4 or gt86..i think the Z 4 is the one for me as i love convertibles and i've never owned a bmw, i had a 986 for a while but was really disappointed with it and moved it on pretty quickly cheers.
Give me that Z4 anyway and everyday. That Toyota looks like your everyday Karen. But the Z4 looks like Angelina Jolie at her prime! And the Z4 with the 35i or 35is spec will murder that Toyota both on the street and on the track. And for the life of me, the interior of the Toyota looks like a dustbin.
What tyres was the GT86 on? I've read that the standard tyres are 'ECO' tyres with poor grip, to make it easier to slide. Also, thinking about the boring stuff, how do running costs, fuel, maintenance and insurance compare?
@@JakobusVdL not sure sorry I filmed this 2 years ago. Most cars cost about the same to insure here. Both are about as efficient, both are pretty reliable.
Mate, I hate to be that guy who leaves an unrelated topic comment on a video😅 but how was your long term experience with the tricity? Looking at buying one as my first vehicle for uni and your video on it is by far the highest quality review. You never did a detailed follow up vid so was just wondering if it held up b4 selling and if you had any gripes with it (like speed, the windshield, etc) after owning it for a while. Or any other general points of note. Thanks for the content👍
One of the best scooters I owned. Very stable at speed, fun to ride, went 100 on the motorway no problem, zero issues in my ownership. Can ride on a car license too so I'd defo recommend
@@KiwiCarLife Yeah I live in ol' hilly Dunedin and I only have a car license. That's why I'm looking at getting this over a 50cc to keep living costs down. I saw on some videos the tricity 125/155 seemed to have some problems getting to 100kph but not on yours. They were all videos of demos or loaners so I reckon maybe just bad maintenence from the shop? Anyway that's convinced me enough. Thanks for the quick response mate!
Yeah all good, I mean maybe into a headwind it'll struggle. 155 makes it no problem, takes a while to get there but will hold it. 125 is literally maxed at like 105 I think so maybe 90 is more reasonable. But you certainly don't feel out of place.
Both of these cars are underpowered and don’t even have motors with as much character as you’d find in a Honda. Cool handling and looks though and most importantly for some buyers, rear wheel drive.

Only except the Z4 is available in many forms e.g. the 35is at the top of the tree with 340 BHP or thereabouts and highly tuneable too! Totally different animal to this 23i
Haha once again, I would take the Z4!, but the GT86 is a fun car for sure.
Yeah I'm not really sure what I'd take... They're both good in their own way

Yeah sounds like similar mods to this one. It was nice!
Hey this was really good man, liked it a lot.
Thanks for the effort to produce it.

Good review!
I like your compare video's. Keep up the good work.

You should review a Ford Fiesta st if you get the chance. Would love to hear your opinions on them
Mm need to find one
Great videos.
Thanks

Yeah the z4 is really good, but I'd definitely recommend the 30i or 35i
Bummer there wasn't a roll race. Obviously the Z4 would take it on the low end, but would be intresting to see how well the 86 could keep up
Z4 would definitely take it. More power and torque, and shorter gears
@kiwicarlife will the z4 step out at all and have some fun like the 86?
Less so was a bit more planted

great video man, Coming from a k series honda, would you choose a manual 370z or a 86 ?
A cab 2 seater no space
Or 4 seats coupe
Cant even compare
One is just for fun
370z
Affordable... They costed new 73K euro (or 107.550 aussie dollar) in the Netherlands due to government taxes.
Wow that's heaps. Used Japanese imports are NZ $22000 or 12000 euro
@@bantamsescort used prices currently 25-32K euro.
Yeah here they start at 15
@@KiwiCarLife that was the case here too, 3 years ago.
Have you got the new BRZ or 86 in NZ yet? We've had the BRZ here for close to 6 months but the 86 is still not on sale.
It's nearly here
Is the new one any bigger interior wise? or is it just an engine update?
@@xenonsaccord4447 it's pretty similar tbh. Really a major facelift rather than a whole new model.
@@KiwiCarLife Bummer… Thanks again though.
I have a hard time getting comfortable in the first gen so I may have that issue in this new model.
BMW Z4 depreciates in 4-5 years by one new Toyota 86 :) :) :)
The 86 is still worth less than the z4 at the same k's in nz
pretty sure top model 86's had dual zone climate and heated seats but could be wrong?
Yeah you’re right the gt models did
Will there be a GR86 Review in near future?
Possibly

It is, here in australia you can pick a clean on in low 20s
Yeah and for the price it's excellent

How cheap is cheap for that GT86? A used non modded one cost quite the money here in Malaysia.
15-20k here in nz
