Black Walder has always been one of my favorite Freys. Dude is a badass unlike most of his cowardly cousins. He has got to have some Bracken in his blood because of how he's described. I wish George had added a prince charming kind of Frey that serves as the antithesis to Black Walder and goes against all of the Frey stereotypes. Perhaps an "Rhaegar Targaryen" type of Frey that everyone likes and wants to be heir and Black Walder treats as his rival. White Walder vs Black Walder.
How did you possibly miss the fact that he’s a bastard? That’s why he’s got the bad attitude. Edmure says “Blavk Walder, that one was not named for the color of his beard. Hates that he’s a bastard and hates everyone that isn’t one.” He’s not in the line of succession but he is “the fiercest fighter of all the Freys” and some think he might try to take the twins by force but again, he’s not in the line if succession. Little walder and big walder mention him when they talk about succession but he’s a bastard.
It's like a mandala effect that just dropped this month. He was mentioned enough in the books I always imagined him as a bastard because he was introduced as a bastard. And I remember the succession talk they said he slept with every one not carrying about how related to him the girl is, and potentially some in line who could be his kids so the twins seat could end up with a bastard fake frey. That's how I remember it.

Every other house spits on the Freys, uses them constantly and retracts their promises to them. Robb Stark was a piece of shit. And so was Edmure and Catelin herself. Isn't funny that the Northmen at the red wedding cheer for Robb Stark and Queen Jeyne, and then have the nerve to act surprised the Freys betrayed them. Not a good idea to to rub salt in Frey's wounds by cheering for Jeyne. Isn't it funny how the northmen don't even care that Robb Stark broke his oath to Frey, then have the nerve to demand Frey be "honorable?" and uphold guest right. At the red wedding they killed northern nobles, rivermen nobles, which some of them have family relationships with, and killed northern & rivermen soldiers & commoners. Then after that, they want to have relationships and go back to normal with such nobles and houses saying sorry, didn't do, it was shape shifting magic. That behavior is enough for all of Westeros to lose trust and respect for house frey. No house would risk losing its family members with unstable people who could pull their knives at any moment because some other guy broke his oath to them.
