The Indian Fertility Society is proud to announce a landmark pilot project for uplifting women's reproductive health in India on the auspicious World IVF Day, on July 25th, commemorating the incredible scientific strides and progress made in the field of infertility and reproductive endocrinology.
Around 17.5% of the adult population - roughly 1 in 6 worldwide - experience infertility, indicating an urgent need to increase access to affordable, high-quality fertility care for those in need.
As you are undoubtedly aware, a significant portion of our country's population resides in rural regions. Recent statistics indicate that a large number of people in rural India face unique challenges related to healthcare, with infertility emerging as a particularly sensitive and often overlooked issue.
More than two-thirds of India's population, or 833 million people, reside in rural areas.
Infertility is unfortunately shrouded in stigma, especially in rural communities, where cultural beliefs and societal norms contribute to a lack of awareness and understanding. It is disheartening to witness the silent suffering of couples in these areas due to societal pressure and the absence of adequate reproductive health knowledge.
The goal of the Indian Fertility Society is to initiate comprehensive educational programs focused on infertility awareness, prevention, and early intervention at the grassroots level. The project Sanjivini is part of our landmark Patient Empowerment Program (PEP).
As a national body with 4,500 members in India and abroad, we envision leveraging existing infrastructure such as primary healthcare centers to disseminate accurate information and provide counseling on reproductive health.
These thoughts motivated us to launch our flagship program, Project Sanjivini, a collaboration between the Indian Fertility Society (IFS) and INTAS.
Sanjivini means an elixir or a message to the community, in this case, to our countrymen and women who are in the reproductive age group and need assistance or help in tier two or three cities of India.
INTAS India is supporting the IFS in this CSR activity and helping us to launch this program in five states of the country as a pilot project. Gradually, we plan to conduct nearly 300 such meetings in the coming 2 years.
By empowering the healthcare authorities with relevant knowledge and training the workers with the aid of flip charts and videos, imparting them with the necessary knowledge and resources, we can ensure that vital information reaches the very heart of rural communities.
The IFS is launching this program in 5 states to begin with: Kashmir, Haryana, Gujarat, Maharashtra, bihar and Tamil Nadu. Our state teams would be leading the mission with the help of a team from INTAS.
We are launching the toolkit for the state medical authorities as well as bringing out patient-centric videos pertaining to sexual health and reproductive hygiene in five different languages, addressing common queries of patients.
Such an initiative, we believe, will lead to a transformative impact on various fronts. Firstly, it will contribute to a significant reduction in infertility cases by enabling early detection and intervention. Additionally, it has the potential to address related social issues such as unstable marriages and empower women by providing them with the information and support needed to make informed decisions about their reproductive health.
By undertaking this collaborative effort, we aspire not only to positively impact the lives of countless families but also to position India as a global leader in proactive reproductive healthcare. Early identification of fertility issues will not only alleviate the emotional burden on affected individuals but also contribute to the overall health and prosperity of our country.
Our dedicated team stands ready to work hand-in-hand with the government to implement these initiatives and bring about positive change in the lives of our fellow citizens.
We would also be releasing our UA-cam video channel with 25 videos in 5 different languages, along with web pages on our website.
In the second phase of this project, we would be outreaching five more states and gradually covering the whole nation.
