I'm Mexican, and I lived down the street from my friend and school buddy who is Japanese. The cultural clash was certainly very odd for 13 year old me. In Mexico (and Latin America in general) the common greeting between friends is a hug and kiss on the cheek, or a handshake if it's more professional/business or when you're first meeting a person but physical affection is very important to us especially with family and close friends because it's a way we strengthen our bonds with one another. So when my friend invited me over for dinner i gave her mom a hug and kiss on the cheek when I introduced myself which she was very taken aback by 😅 but she didn't say anything to my face. It was also strange to me how quiet they were during dinner and my friend was equally shocked when she came over to my house for a meal and music was playing, we were all talking, laughing, cracking jokes, and me or any of my siblings/cousins getting up randomly to grab something for one of the adults. I don't know if it's cultural or just her family but no one got up once during dinner at her house anytime I went there. She moved away a few years ago but we're still friends and we laugh about it now. It's always nice to learn about other people's cultures and traditions
The Japanese is a culture of real respect...not what some think is respect. When Latinos go to a party, they love to grab other guys wives and girlfriends and give them big long fondling hugs and kisses ..which will get you offed in most countries ...and they hide behind, "This is our culture"! But Latin women, same guys wives and girlfriends, are a lot more timid and demure and reserved in how they interact with other men in front of their latin boyfriends. So I and many think you are all disrespectful prats that like taking advantage of others behind a sly hand.

The separation of family members was cruel, and I don't think people realize the extent of the psychological damage that caused and continues to cause. But, it also shows the resiliency of the human spirit and how important community was to these people. My great great grandma was the daughter of a slave.
