📚Description: Today we are reviewing Gibson USAs latest Slash Collection guitar. This is based on one of Slash's most heavily toured guitars - Jessica. It is a late 80s Les Paul standard so Gibson paid tribute to some of their quirky specs like a plain 3-piece top. At the same price as the 2 piece flame top models, it is hard to justify this model unless you're a big fan of this particular guitar. It certainly isn't for everyone, but I enjoyed it! There aren't many "plain top" Les Paul Standard options produced today

7:05 I'm pretty sure the metal alloy used in the ABR-1 is different than the Nashville bridge.
Additionally, the material makeup of the bridge saddles are also different between the two bridges.
And yes, the 3-Piece top is indeed an acquired taste. 😉
Great Content Austin, Thank You
EDIT, the pickups in that guitar sounded great, especially the Neck pickup. 👍
Just grabbed it Austin. So glad you had this.
@@Aspkkr Congrats 👍
@@hkguitar1984 Thanks
@@Aspkkr I gotta tell ya, those pickups sound great. Super happy for you.
Speaking of “Jessica” a review of a Dickey Betts signature is in order since we lost him recently.
agreed!
THIS is the LP that first made me want an LP when I was a kid. Slash just astounded me. I've been wanting them to make one for years, so I'm exactly the demo they're looking for and I'm thrilled it exists. Now I just need to save up for another LP. Shouldn't take me more than ten or twenty years.
So 300 stands for the 300th Slash model issued by Gibson?
That’s good!!😂😂
Exactly it's just too much,it seems that every 6 months they release a new one.
If they're selling, why would they stop making them?
Hahaha. . Sounds about right
I think that’s the paradise city video guitar. God I used to melt my appetite cassette playing that solo.
Crazy days when people are willing to pay a premium for something we all considered the worst thing about the Les Pauls from that era. Why anyone would choose one of these over a regular Standard with a two piece figured top is cray cray. If you like Slash, buy one of his AAA top models for the same price and if you like the 80's vibe, buy a used original for the same or less. They're great players for sure.
People are asking A LOT for late 80s standards nowadays.
@@Trog Fair enough... Some people may be asking a lot ... but anyone who pays more than $3200 for a plain-jane, late 80's Standard isn't looking very hard. Even if they did pay more, the real thing is so much better than a no frills, quasi signature model.
What if you already have the flame top Slash guitars? It's not a matter of choosing this above a nicer top Les Paul, its a matter of wanting this to add to your collection. Doesnt need to be a choice. I have quilt tops, flame tops, one piece tops and so on. It's what I like. Also $3200 these days isnt a lot for a guitar, I saw an Ibanez that was 5 times that much. Customs are all more than that. $3000 is the price for the USA range, not even high end guitars.
I can’t stand flame maple tops, just too gaudy and loud. I wish they would make more guitars with plain maple tops. Each to their own but I much rather prefer very plain wood grain with very subtle bursts.
@@Aspkkr Yes, it is about a choice, otherwise Gibson is solely relying on Slash fanboys and collectors to be repeat buyers. Most players will buy one or the other. I never said $3200 was too expensive or that people shouldn't spend that much on a guitar... i said there were much better options for $3200 and less. That applies to anyone, not just Slash fanboys. If you want to put on a tophat and pretend you're in the jungle, that's your prerogative.
I have this Slash remake guitar that was done in 2008. Back then it was 4500 but you also got a Slash leather jacket that I still have. Only 400 made. No fret nibs on that model and a 3 piece top as well.
I got the 2008 Tobacco burst @0:42
I don't know if people like him. I do and I love this guitar. It looks like it plays like a dream. He seems to have no problems running his scales. Very unique playing style. Love it.
Mark Agnesi did a Gidson video it was titled like "The Collection: Slash" or sometjing close to that in it is "Jessica". If i remember correctly, it was sent to him with another guitar, they were both B stocks or seconds or something.
The video to me was interesting because they showed his B C Rich guitars in it and talk about them. I remember when seeing him play one one years ago and realized it was a similar guitar to the ones Dave Mustaine played in Metallica and when he started Megadeath
Sweet, a premium version of a b stock guitar that Gibson sent him to replace a better guitar that wasn't a Gibson that he preferred. Shut up and take my money.
When Gibson talks to these musicians about their collections, I actually find it cool that they also show and talk about their guitars by other brands.
How about a sound comparison to his other signature models?
Yes please!!! 🤘🤘
Look out for the slash signature tea cup set.
Heavy and uncomfortable as all hell, probably..
😂😂😂😂😂😂
@@AvyScottandFlowerhey that’s my favorite teacup and it’s doing a disservice to compare it to a Les Paul
@@ringsystemmusic How do you like your drinks mixed in with peeling nitrocellulose? 😅
No prizes for guessing what the tea cosy would look like 😂
I believe this is slashs favorite guitar. Watch him through gnr, snakepit, bluesball, velvet revolver, conspirators this was always his go-to guitar, he played this guitar the most through out his life. Cant say that for appetite burst because he retired that guitar after 1988 and only used for studio.
@editname8536..yes, he's played that one to death..still does! It looks like he'll, but obviously plays & sounds incredible...
Not gonna lie…this is one of the first Slash signatures Epiphone can closely replicate. No need for flame veneers & the lack of fret nibs on Epiphones would actually make for a pretty close copy from Epiphone.
I stripped my flametop Epiphone Standard to find a 3-piece top, so I built it into a Jessica tribute
@@JMunn55 You were ahead of Gibson & Epiphone. That’s awesome!
I like the three piece top and the lack of flame. I think it makes it more of a 'working' instrument and less ornamental and less for show. Matched tops can be a bit formulaic. It also makes me think of players in the past who stripped a single color finish that they didn't like to reveal the maple underneath.
The only problem with that logic is that if it's a "working" instrument it shouldn't cost the same as the ornamental one "for show". Three piece tops were used in the 80's to save money - it was never a positive attribute. It's not $3200 because it has a 3 piece top, it's $3200 because it has Slash's name on it. The Les Paul "Classic" would make more sense as a "working" instrument... it comes in the same finish and costs $1,000 less... plus it has the 2 piece top and fret nibs that cost more to produce. In essence, you're paying more for less with the Jessica.
This is the guitar I’ve wanted for 20 odd years. I’m currently saving up for one. The Jessica is the guitar that made me love Les Paul’s so it’s special to me. I love the plain 3 piece top, and the plainer the better haha. The example you have here is exactly the kind I’m looking to get.
Nice overall tone. Curious to hear how "edge pick pinch" harmonics do.
I could be wrong but I remember Slash playing the Allman Brothers song “Jessica” on the BBC show Top Gear whose opening theme song was Jessica. I don’t remember what guitar he was playing but it probably was his model of this.
I believe he used his Gibson 2010 AFD replica for that, but the song could be the reason behind the name of his ‘88
The back on that one is beautiful! Moves nicely
It sounds great! I'd play it happily.
You can buy Faber bridge conversion posts that get hammered direct into the body and then it’s a traditional abr-1 for all intents and purposes.
I’ve done it to several of my modern Pauls and I’m gonna tell you right now, the difference in tone is negligible, BUT it is more stable as the bridge can’t wobble back and forth like when it’s sitting on the screws into inserts.
Ive been in love with this finish ever since i saw it! ... it turns out it was slash that took it to be refined out of the box. It doesn't work right without the three piece plainish top!!... if it was weight reliefed, and had a dark, or dark natural back, id pay!!
Why not just buy the Classic in honeyburst? It's the same finish, it's a plain top, it's weight relieved and has a natural back for $1,000 less than the Jessica. There's absolutely no advantage to having a 3 piece top. It was a cost cutting measure for Gibson back then. When they went to 2 piece tops it was considered an upgrade.
I think the better grounding approach is to not rely on the metal grounding plate, but to run individual ground bus wire (Teflon sleeving covered) to each pot and then to the star ground in the center of the plate. This way plate corrosion will not compromise the ground connections.
This guitar is a prime example how marketing is everything. You can buy a two piece flame top 50s or 60s standard minus the skull and crossbones for way less, but it wouldn't be a Slash model.
Thanks Trogly, great video. Love that Guitar 🎸, looks great and your playing sounds good. Keep on keeping on 🎸😎👍
I was waiting for this Jessica to be released in case it was interesting. The guitar is amazing but the price for it in Europe is ridiculously expensive for a signature guitar that isn't a limited edition.
It doesn't cost the same as other slashy models, it's more expensive (...new model in collection). The 50's faded honeyburst looks a better Jessica to me. Thanks for the demo.
I'm not a fan of the 3-piece top that Gibson puts out with any of their LP's. I'm sure it's used in the Studio and other solid finishes. But for a burst it just falls short of my expectations in a wood-grain top. I won't complain about the frets without the "nibs". The binding over the frets, to me, looks like they are cutting corners. That Slash model actually sounds great with those pickups. Even though the finish is more like a lemon burst I'd be completely happy with it. Great video, Trog. Well done!
03:20 yes Jessica has a Nashville. And Slash has to ride the stopbar quite high on the low e side due to the break angle etc
Day 5 of asking Trogly to review a Heritage H150! Who is with me??
I second this!
No it’s nothing but a wannabe Gibson
heritage = gibson ripoff
They’re ugly, go review one for yourself
The Gibson cork sniffers are out en force. Technically, Gibson is a Heritage ripoff.
Looks like the fabled 'Long & McQuade 200 Run' model. Those have solid-thru bodies and burstbuckers, though.
If they gave this the Greeny treatment, these would have sold out immediately. Slash's Jessica is a gem of beauty. A non-aged one is still awesome, but not so much compared to the other finishes that one could choose from.
Flippin heck, I never realized Jessica has a Nashville bridge. It's still one of his most special guitar with a unique sound I think.
Isn’t Seymour Duncan the only brand that makes pickups for Slash? I always thought that was strange putting his name on Gibson pickups and not using his signature pickups when he’s an extremely well know SD artist.
They came stock in the first few runs like his AFD, Rosso Corsa & Anaconda burst that came out after 2010 but all the recent models have Gibson pups that were made to replicate those SD's that he uses. I've got a 2010 Custom shop AFD & they definitely came stock with that. They're really good pups tbh.
If you were a teen in the late 80's like I was, this is "the" guitar to have.
All the GnR concert video's, live photo's etc featured slash with this guitar or one like it.
The stories of the AFD Derrig, etc didn't come out until much later.
I only wish I had pulled the trigger on a VOS custom shop version of this model years ago.
On camera this is a great looking guitar. Sound is okay. I'd love to play one. Anyhow, I'd be tempted to stick a set of Duncan Alnico II's in it, for authenticity.
the Gibson pups sound better.
I agree they should have done weight relief on this one just to make it a little different
That Cstock Les Paul give it to Slash was the best CEO of Gibson could ever have 😂😂
For the people who don’t understand, THIS is the guitar that comes to mind when a lot of people think of Slash. He used it heavily as his main guitar throughout GNR and most of his side projects. So its understandable why there would be a market for it. I personally love a plain maple top, and the three piece (to me) is just iconic from watching so many live shows over the years.
I looks like they didn't put felt between the strap locks and the body, did they put metal to wood?
You're right, no felt, just metal to wood for some reason. Bit miserly on a 3 grand guitar.
Also Grovers instead of Schaller for some reason..
Nice tone those puppies
1:06 "Phone's ringing, dude!"
Is it the same neck as the other slash signature? I was able to hold the november burst and it’s not as thick as i imagine.
2008 was the best Slash LP
@0:43 There's mine!
Definitely looks killer, although i'd prefer a two piece top.
That’s a good one.
I want to get this because of the story i guess but i have a Epiphone les Paul standard 60's with a tobacco burst finish so I'm ok with having this one
I’m still trying to figure if this is from the paradise city music video or the guitar he used on the use your illusion tour? The one from the tour looked more like a cherry sunbursts plain top, but I know slash said a that Gibson sent him two cherry sunburst Les Pauls, and had the shine knocked off.
On this guitar is the bridge grounded? I don't see the grounding lead hole in the electronics bay. On LP guitars it is probably a good routine check to see if the bridge is grounded using your ohmmeter. I say this because virtually all modern pickup manufacturers show wiring diagrams that include the bridge ground connection.
Looks identical to any 2000s era Les Paul classic
I don‘t get what they did on the fretboard.
But sounds like Travis Meeks. (your outro)
😁
🤝
look out! trogly got a ROTtlesnake suitcase under his arm! 😂
nice one man!
there were two 1987 Les Paul models at the time the Tour started, I bought one at the famous purple steal shop BC Rich!! the other was made by Les Paul. But what will it be!?!?!
Sounds pretty good to me.
I want one of the new es335 slash model
Make Fender Britney Spears Toxic 8 String Stratocaster Coming Soon
Hey Trogly, no fret nibs on the Warren Haynes Les Paul signature model either. 👍
Maybe the Epiphone version will get the custombuckers 😂
The slash epis are in dire need of a revamp
i would have loved for them to weight relief these like the original 87's
Buy a Classic... same honeyburst finish, weight relieved, $1k cheaper.
Love it Also props for the awesome Lilac in bloom
PS: I put "57 Classics" in her. I thought the pickup base plate is brass, that base looks like nickle plated
Guitars have no pronouns. Ditch the woke.
What kind of pickups would the original guitar have had? Does he mention in the video?
SD Alnico 2 I believe
So the only difference between jessica and regular slash signature regarding playability is the bridge?
Not a fan of Slash or G&R, but that guitar sounds pretty good to me.
Completely agree with the new pickup name. Seymour Duncan makes signature SLASH pickups , and Gibson shouldn't be able to just copy the name and make , especially since they are in a fight with dimarzio over pickup names
I just wish the back was dark back or brown instead of red
I believe the original was a cherry clown burst which faded. I have a 1967 ES 125 which faded in the same way. I could still see remnants of the color under the pickguard next to the screw hole.
Slash said the top was refinished
The binding is wrong in the inner horn, it should be thicker
Do you have Gibson Les Paul late 80s review I can watch ? Or give more details on other difference between this Jessica model and the real Jessica? How are the necks different?
Surprised they didn’t put actual Seymour Duncan Slash Alnico II Pros.
@Trog I find it annoying that Gibson made these a hit and miss as far as the color of the top. Most of the ones I've seen are a little too light in color and nowhere near what Jessica looks like. I just received mine recently its looks more like a brownish honeyburst than what Jessica would look like in reddish orange if that makes sense. But strangely in some black magic sorcery, it looks reddish orange in pictures and in videos. What the hell Gibson!
Slash played a couple of Fender Strats on his recent release blues album, maybe Gibson could reissue them by special license, would be Hella funny
Not the first time they’ve tried haha ua-cam.com/video/JTNv9i6Mq2w/v-deo.html
Serious question, how many Slash signature guitars are currently in production? Seems like a lot
I think Austin counted 40-50 (including epi's) in a reply to yesterdays comments. Or put another way, 35-45 too many.
Just checked what Austin replied ... ~55 if you count colour options and aging options.
@@PaulCooksStuff wow. I guess there's a market for all of them, but it seems a bit excessive
@@PaulCooksStuff
Does anyone have any idea how many different Les Paul variations were made when Les Paul himself was the only person with a Les Paul signature model?
Did he have a many as Slash?
@@charlesbolton8471 I don't even know who the first LP Sig would be. A couple of articles suggest Joe Perry 96 and Ace Frehley 97. Custom shop clones rather than full USA production. If we apply the same Austin criteria (every model, colour, aging) the models and numbers for Les himself quickly proliferate (standard, custom, junior, special, sg, deluxe, pro, recording, the paul, studio etc), but whether its higher than Slash by 96, I don't know all the variants. Maybe Austin will chip in.
Though funnily enough I've just learned Hetfield has 80+ signature ESP's. Maybe Gibson/Slash want that record. Should be there by mid 2026 at this rate.
I like the color, but do not think it's worth the price. The leaving off of the fret nibs bothers me, too. You can just buy a regular Les Paul and install Slash SD pickups. Not worth it.
Why your guitar has the dark rosewood freatboard...and another has a horrible dry, light Brown rosewood? You apply something over the freatboard?
Hey Trogly, did you actually say ‘the three-piece body and uncovered frets were Gibson’s effort to be more accurate to the original’? C’mon, man… I’d believe that if they offered it at discount to the others in the collection (I won’t even get into the cheaper plain top). Gibson seems to take every opportunity to get at their loyal followers cash.
How many Slash signature guitars exist? What’s the point?
The point is people like them and buy them . For a slash fan having a replica of his favourite guitar will be cool to own . Why does it even bother you? Don’t like it, don’t buy it , simple 🤷♂️
@@Themaskplague it doesnt bother me, I like slash
I get it, if you like a simple look that will look better with age...well heres one for you. I'd like to have seen less gloss on the top.
If it's about a simple look, you can also buy a honeyburst Classic for $1k less. I suspect people buying this are more drawn to the Slash association than anything else.
Trogly is massively improving as a guitar player. He is well on his way to having good feel, rhythm, touch and tone. His improvement in the past year is remarkable. He could be a guitar hero in a few years.
Also, the tone on this guitar sounded awesome. But that may also be due to Trogly getting better and better at dialing in good tones on his amps/recordings.
Trogly is proof that tonewoods don't matter
nice looking les paul but im sure most people dont want to pay the price for it.
this one makes more sense than the 63 es345 we just saw. plain tops usually have a sweeter tone than the flame tops but this one is a 3 peace and ive noticed that they have their own vibe compared to the 2 peace tops.
Most of the Slash models look better than the current Standard line.
3 piece top, no fret inlays, no seymour duncan. Is this really an epiphone with the Gibson logo in it?
Like it don’t like it I don’t care. That is the first one that I would love to get. Thanks for demoing it!!
DEFINITELY FIOR ME! I've been waiting for this my entire guitar career (since 2000).
Trogly, you forgot to add nutwidth in milimeter and weight in kilo..
Watch the scale for the weight
@@Trog oh, cool. I didnt even notice.
The seams are wrong. The fret nibs is a joke. Especially for 3k. I do like the bridge pickup.
Those Gibson Slash buckers sound GREAT!!!!!!!!!
why does a silica packet count as case candy??....hmm 🤔
No fret nibs, awesome! Al2 pups, nostalgic 3 piece top, metal jack plate, 9lbs, it's all good stuff! Should be a regular model offering not just Slash's Signature 'Jessica'.
The Classic comes in the same finish for $1,000 less than the Jessica...Yes, it has fret nibs and a 2 piece top but I personally consider those upgrades. Pickups and hardware can be changed if someone really wanted to make it more Slashy looking.
Why, why is that awesome? Why is the absence of a feature awesome?
@@panameadeplm please explain the enjoyment of nibs. I've had them and don't enjoy them and in time they separate. I see no benefit.
Not for that money, I have to wonder what Gibson is thinking with all these.
I think it would have been a more grateful gesture, if Jessica wasn't a B stock.
If you’ve seen one you’ve seen them all

Pretty sure he played Jessica onstage all 4 times I saw G 'n R live from '87 onwards so she's a big deal for Slash fans like me.
wasn't jessica a les paul replica? so is this the replica of a replica?
The Appetite for Destruction guitar was the replica.
This one is the upcharged replica of a downpriced b-stock.
Paying a premium for a copy of something that was leftover and discounted. You couldnt make it up.
Gibson didnt gift him these in the late 80s... They gave him 2 factory seconds at dealer price 🤣
I think Slash models are over exposed! It’s a Greenie look alike and personally not a fan of the lemonade color, including Greenie! And again, why pay extra for a beat up guitar?!
Tagging a guitar a signature guitar just brings the price up. They’re based on regular production guitars!!!! The guitars they sent him where seconds and the one he picked was gonna be destroyed but was saved as a wall hanger! For Gibson it’s not about how it plays but how it looks!!!
It’s sounds angry
Pretty nice guitar... But i def wouldn't spend the money on it... I think Slash is definitely an icon but not that big of an icon to me to spend that much money
Agreed. You can just buy a honeyburst Classic for $1k less and not scream "I'm a fanboy".
