📚Description: We've waited at least a decade since the last time Grohl got a signature from Gibson but it is finally here - the Dave Grohl DG-335 from epiphone. I think Dave and Epi did fans a solid by not going too crazy with the price of this one. While there is some outcry to the 1299 price... epiphones have gotten much more expensive (and much better) in the past few years. This is a really solid guitar for a Dave fan. All Gibson electronics - it is ready to go!

No endoscope view? I was hoping to see what kind of tone capacitors they used. Probably ceramic discs, I guess.
a Chinese guitar for $1900.00 CAD & you think they could've sold them higher??? Come on man give your head a shake. It's things like this DG and the overpriced Joe Bonamassa stuff that are driving the overall guitar market out of reach for new instruments. People are just passively accepting this nonsense and its ridiculous. In 2020 I bought a new Inspired by Gibson Firebird. I played several Gibsons and Epiphones at the time. I felt the $900.00 CAD Epiphone was a good or better than any new Gibson Firebird that I played so I bought the Epiphone. Firebirds are not easy to build. You can't tell me that the DG is a reasonable price. Not acceptable
Oops Trog, I think you meant “8 and a half” kohms on the bridge pickup… an Indian Yanni moment 😂
$3,199 in Australia Trogly
Ooooo bucket head epiphone signature I do like your style I hope they listen lol and you know they do
I assure you, we've been paying attention to epiphone prices. We're mad because the quality is the same as when signature models were $899, and could not care less about a custom shop stamp. The $400-700 price increase is absurd
absolutely
Epiphone still make cheaper guitars. They're more expensive than 3-4 years ago, but way less than this. You can still get a 335 in the UK for around £500.
Or just buy second hand and keep your money out of Gibson's pockets entirely.
Buy the gibson trini then
Honestly I'm sick of hearing people complain about guitar prices all the time. No matter what guitar it is, no matter how much it is, no matter what brand, or where it's made someone is always complaining about something. People just need to get over it. Not every product has to be exactly what you want at the price you want. They seem to be selling just fine, so much so that they sold out almost instantly, and comparitively speaking in the current market the price is pretty appropriate. If someone doesn't like something or doesn't like the price, just don't buy it. If something is actually overpriced people won't buy it and it will be lowered or discontinued. You can buy an Epiphone 335 or similar guitar for much less, if you a want a signature guitar with premium specs expect to pay for it, no matter the brand.
@@devilsguitaristmusicThank you! That needed to be said… So tired of the whining!
That price point should mean a rosewood board.

This was originally set to have a street price of $799. You can still find a few sites online with the old prices (but no inventory).
This was originally going to be less than other signature Epi 335/Sheraton guitars? I doubt that...
I’d get the guitar, play a couple of FF songs, put it on the rack, and grab my SG.
i am playing this more
than my lp or sg.
@@nicokarsen6131 cool, enjoy!
All you need is a Foo Fighter band sticker for the scratched case.
Huge Foos fan too. Love Dave and I got one on day one last week. Came two days later opened it to a broken headstock. Oof..
Sorry that happened. Who did you buy it from/shipped the guitar?
Same here.
Hm, they must be making them in the Gibson factory, then.
The same thing happened to me, when I opened the case the headstock was broken.
Update. I got my new DG 335. Arrived in perfect condition this time. Patience is a virtue. They're starting to restock. You just have to spend a little time searching for them. If you want one, they can be found at retail. Hopefully, nobody is paying over list. The chunky neck is phenomenal along with the Gibson pickups. It has an array of tone possibilities.
They finally did it.
We’ve been waiting for one of these for AGES. I can’t wait to get my hands on one and compare with my chibson copy
Personally, I currently like your copy more, because it has a story. It would be cool to see where they differ. As a lefty, I one day might make my own copy, so the (relatively) inexpensive version being out there will be nice to have an official point of comparison for future builders and modders
I love you're still rocking the Jim James Trogly. Such a great guitar!
I'm so glad this is finally out.
Very nice review man, I have seen lots of videos for this guitar and yours is by far the best in terms of showing how the guitar sounds and not showing off with soulless blues licks or solos.
Mine is coming tomorrow!
Thanks for posting neck measurements!
My whole family loves Foo Fighters. Several years ago we got my daughter her first full-sized guitar, an Epiphone ES-339 in Pelham Blue because it was similar to Dave's, but not as huge and heavy. Neither of us are big on the full 335 size so that's what we'll stick with. I do wish it had the Gibson USA pickups, though. Changing pickups in a hollowbody guitar is pretty tough for me.
Don’t forget the Emily Wolfe signatures as another alternative! Your review of the original run Sheraton Stealth is how I found your channel! I love that guitar, but it was definitely a stopgap for me until a Dave Grohl was available! I’m already on the waiting list at Sweetwater, and I’m hoping you’re right about this staying in production 🤘🏼
brilliant comparison you done on the acoustic tone epi vs gibson. Got me to go check if my gibson perform as well as yours. It must have come down to the finish. This epi could be a gibson killer if they use nitro, therefore they would never allow epi to use nitro.
Salutations Austin!
Nice Epiphone DG 335!
I like the Pelham Blue finish, and I have an Epiphone Les Paul with the same finish, and it has held up very well so far, I have had it now since April of 2019.
I hope they eventually offer it in the Gold and Black as well.
Thanks for reviewing this guitar for us all!
Please have an excellent and awesome day!

favorite epiphone model so far
Nice to see a few people got these shipped to them without the headstock being broken.
Mine was broken
Growing up in the 90s, I always associated Ephiphone with Squire. Both the cheaper alternatives to their parent companies Gibson and Fender. Back then Epiphones were priced similarly to Squiers - respective to their Gibson and Fender counterparts. I will say that the newer Ephiphones are much more in line (as far as quality goes) with the Fender made in Mexico and dare I say made in the U.S. guitars. Ironically, I have found certain Squiers (the classic vibe series) to also be just as good as some made in Mexico Fenders - except the price on Squire classic vibes haven't risen to the level of these Epiphones. The price of some of these in-demand used guitars like the original Dave Grohl series has gotten to a point of absurdity so I can see why Epiphone would price this guitar the way they have. I'd still take a Squier classic vibe and lightly modify it before I'd buy one of these even if they are good guitars.
I really like that they finally got to this thing, I wanted one for YEARS and was waiting for Gibson to do an Epiphone variant, however, I managed to snag a 2012 very limited run ES-355 Epiphone in TV Pelham Blue, and it is SO fantastic, looks like a similar neck profile (this is thicker than both my recent Epiphone 335 models which were thinner and more of a shallow D shape, but a far different shape from the older Peerless Korean Riviera shape neck and Sorrento both) and I LOVE the factory pickups in it, although there are conflicting specs online over which Alnico Classic pickups this has, I need to pull them and verify which these actually came with and post a video on this bad boy). Has the real mother of pearl inlays including the headstock split diamond and logo, has the multi layer binding body and headstock, has an actual rosewood fretboard (specs that say ebony seem to be incorrect, but it is a DARK board), and a Bigsby... specs are honestly better than the new DG335 model overall I'd suggest, and I think I dropped around $550 for it in mint condition last year or maybe I bought it in 2022. It also has the "clipped dove wing" SWEET old Epiphone signature style headstock that I've always thought was one of the best looking ever made on any guitars. Also had the same case basically with no DG logo and came with the tortise guard in the case uninstalled and the case candy.
Owning this, there is really no way I can justify paying twice plus what that cost me with better fretboard wood, multi layer bindings, fancier headstock inlays, the Bigsby, and it sounds fantastic (I do rock a lot of Foo on it and it nails the sound). To top it off they were a very limited run, some specs online say sub 1,000 produced total but nowhere can I find a definitive total they made so I may try contacting customer service to see what they can tell me on that. They were a wild $1,165 back when new in 2012, which would be more than the DG model today, likely due to the higher range specs they came with (inflation adjusted at this moment of posting a whopping $1,574 and change, yes for an Epiphone). I feel like I STOLE mine for the price I paid, it would be worth every penny of that original price, even with inflation factored in today if you ask me. They can be, RARELY found for good prices on the used market (ebay score for me), so if you want higher specs for less money, be patient and hunt down a TV Pelham ES355 if you ask me and you like a Bigsby (I do personally). They also came in a nice Cherry, Alpine White, and Ebony color (with gold hardware on those colors), but the TV Pelham with the see-thru finish is just beautiful in person. The claim on numbers was that they would make "up to 1,000", but I'd assume they made and sold fewer at such a high price point. That "limted to" number was for each model across the range of the one year limited run TV Pelham finish supposedly.
I got mine last week. It really is an extremely well put together guitar. Honestly, better than I expected. Zero flaws in fit or finish. No oops-ing on the binding. Fret ends nicely finished and no sprout. And, wait for it....stable tuning. I also have to say that the Gibson USA pup sound great. Don't know how they'd sound recorded but live sound is really nice
mine gets here Tues and will get played live Thurs and Saturday. looking forward to it!
Been an avid FF/Dave fan for decades…the white LP custom, explorer, Firebird studio or clear Dan Armstrong are what models come to mind as Dave’s guitar. They are the guitars I wanted when I started playing…
The picture used of Trini in the beginning with the bound non reversed FB headstock, it looks way better than the headstock we have today.
And it would be much harder to paddle out to sea with that Trini Lopez headstock.
Nice touch doing an unplugged demo. Back in the late 90’s my most regretted gear non-acquisition was seeing a used Pelham Blue Trini at my local guitar shop, it was love at first sight, but I hesitated at the price. Came back the next day, and it was gone. Years later I got a ‘67 Cherry Trini, but no Pelham Blue to be found. That’s when I read that Dave Grohl was searching for the same thing. Fortunately he’s a rock star that can get Gibson to make ‘em! Eastwood made a clone Pelham Blue Trini-style for under $600 that was pretty decent. I think this version as an actual Dave Grohl model is cool. Probably plunking down the coin in short order…
The Trini Lopez model always felt a bit overlooked and the prices were lower than a similar ES 335. Just illustrates how when someone famous starts playing something the popularity jumps. I think the diamond sound holes are a decent change from the more classic looking f-holes. Same with the inlays. The Firebird headstock looks like it has a straighter string path too.
The negativity in the comments here is WILD. I just got one of these and it's a great guitar. Worth every penny IMO.
Don't get out much, eh?
I’m right there with you. Unless the quality crashes to the roof, the features get better and better and the price NEVER goes over $1000 because “it’s only Epiphone”, it’s all bad and a rip-off… 🙄
Gibson pickups plus the hard case definitely worth the 1299
I agree fully. I have one and it's well worth the price. It's awesome
@@chrisburch3808that's 120 for ahard case and around 200 for the pickups.
No rosewood or ebony, non locking tuners.
Face it, it's over priced.
Great tone. Those pickups shine
I'm in love with that instrumental
Great job lighting that to display the color.
I've always maintained semi-acoustics are the perfect electric guitars. They're just so resonant. You can make a Les Paul sound like a Strat or Tele & you can do the same the other way around but although you can also make a 335 sound like any of the above, the same isn't true in reverse. I've got a '92 335 & the sound is just so big. It adds a whole extra dimension to my tone.
Thank you for this review, I greatly appreciate it ! Excellent!!!
Totally agree. Mine is amazing. Thanks Trogly

Love it, but wish they'd do an Epiphone Trini Lopez version version too with the trapeze tailpiece.
The Trini Lopez is an excellent guitar. Though Grohl is probably one of the most versatile musicians who have lived in modern times. What a guy!
Well, this is actually what I am about to do with the DG 335.

Thanks @Trog! Interesing tidbit...I picked up my DG-335 last week, (guitar is great! - no quality issues there) but it did ship with a gold decal Epiphone case, minus the Dave Grohl signature decal. Called up my guitar shop, apparently a few of them did ship with the alternate case...odd. Thoughts?
The one review I’ve been waiting for!
I was at the Gibson custom shop in 2006 when the first one of these was getting built for Dave.
This is essentially my dream guitar (well a real Gibson would truly be my dream). I love Dave and I've always loved the semi-hollow guitars. I am new to playing electric, but when I was searching for my first electric early last year, I knew I could never have a Gibson DG-335. I bought the closest thing I could find in looks. I got a Epiphone ES-339 in Pelham Blue. If I had any idea these were gonna happen, I would have bought a different first guitar and saved for this. 😭🤣
I just bought an Eastman 339 style guitar and my only complaint is that the space between the lower horn and the neck is a little bit cramped and my hand gets squeezed when I try to play the higher notes. Other than that I love the smaller body. I’m sure if you really want this one though you will managed to get it eventually. Maybe even get a good deal on a used one.
I love my 339. I don't currently find myself that high on the fretboard much, but I can see me having similar issues with my fat hands. Haha! Also, I'm not a fan of the gloss neck. Trying to decide if I wanna soften the neck finish a little.
I will definitely add this eventually, would have just been nice to not have already bought a similar guitar.
@@worldofKurt lol, I hear you. Luckily I don’t get up that high too much myself. Otherwise it’s a great guitar.
this video motivate me more to acquire this - my dream guitar!
Fretboard looks good for the first few frets, then gets bad.. They should use Pau Ferro or do as Fender has done, gone back to Rosewood.. I hope they'll make an Explorer with an Ebony board or an LP Custom with a thicker neck than the AJ Custom, then I might finally consider an Epiphone, but then there's the Epiphone QC, who knows if you'll get a good one..
Great review and great guitar.
Got mine on day 1 from the Gibson Garage in London and did not disappoint. A fantasticly built guitar. Great build, great tone and I think a fair price for a ‘special’ Epi
Just ordered one from GC and it comes in a couple of days (they have 15 that just came in). I'll keep you posted once its in my hands. Looking forward to playing it and see if it was a good decision.
Trogly, I hope you'll eventually be able to get your hands on the same model I bought pre-owned in November 2022, the Yamaha SA-2000 (or the more-recent 2200). It's in my mind the equal of a bona-fide ES-335 at a fraction of the price and far surpassing the recent Epiphone take.
This is the same color as that color changing dress meme from a few years ago. Great video as always dude!
I just got a Riviera with cool minibuckers and a nice, chunky neck. And its got the cool frequensator. For half that cost.
The grohl has a cool headstock i think, but the weird neck profile and run of the mill pickups are deal breakers for me.
To each their own, but I find that headstock atrocious 🤮
All the 24' and on guitars have the exact gibson fretwire. The CS inspired.
Wow, that's like a $2 upgrade? I'm impressed.
those cleans sound great
This is an excellent guitar! I like how you explained the full history of the build. Btw, where are you from? I’m new here, but have watched a few of your videos lately and I can’t place the accent. Like when you pronounce “button”. No offense intended!
Hey Trogly, tops and backs in Epiphone are usually 5 ply maple (3 veneer style layers with 2 thicker layers inbetween) instead of 3 ply maple poplar maple.
New Trogly video lets go
Nice review mate..... 🎶
I would like to see a Trini Lopez version.
Gibson are really pushing to have Epiphone fill the $1000-2000 range. As long as they have Gibson wiring, electronics and pickups I'm fine with it. If they don't, then no a price hike is not justified.
It's not like they don't still have the cheaper models, there's still several affordable models, in some cases Epiphone offer what you could get used Gibsons for 10 years ago.
Foolish. For all intents and purposes, Probuckers ARE Burstbuckers. And trust me, Alpha pots are just as good as CTS.
@@lunarvvolf9606 are you being sarcastic? if not, what do you expect for a $200 guitar? i got a $200 squier and had to file all the frets on both sides, too. and replace both pickups and all the guts as well as the shitty tuners. so what? that's what you get with a cheapo. save a little money. you can get a brand new 335 for 599 if you really want one.
Personally they need to start using rosewood for fretboards again if they want to be considered premium. I would’ve rather had rosewood on the DG than a one piece neck and pearl inlays.
Hey! Do this one comes with a two way trossrod as epiphone do ?

These are awesome. Would be great it if they were offered in ebony finish as well.
Fret material is different? Weren't they supposed to use Gibson fretwire on the high end Epiphones, or was that just the Greeny?
One might say the wait for these has been "Everlong." Very nice tribute in Drop D, Trogly!
OK my take on this. For the price point it's not a bad deal and it is coming with some nice features but after listening to it and a few of the cons about it I would still rather play on my Gibson ES-335's. I myself don't like the chunky neck but I do like the binding as it gives it a more expensive price look to it. After playing guitar for over 60 years it really don't make a lot of difference on who makes what anymore because you can take a cheap guitar and make it sound and play about as good as a high dollar one. I do have a few Epiphone's in my collection of guitars but with all these Gibson Les Paul's I have and my trusted Fender Strats & Tele's along with a few other guitars I don't want to mention due to Vintage reasons I'll say for the bucks it's a fair price. Thanks for the reviews...
Man! That white epiphone with the Bigsby and varitone is pretty sweet. This Grohl model is cool as well. It’d be cool if it came in silver burst.
I love the 335! This Dave Grohl model is especially nice. My favorite color too!
I appreciate how you always show the natural "straight-line" tone. If the sound is exceptional, processors and pedals should only compliment the instrument. Frankly, I'm tired how demonstrations doctor up the tone as if they're ashamed of the natural sound.
I'm not a fan of the Trini Lopez f-holes or color (I'd be fine with it on any other guitar but this one), but I do like the headstock. The straight string pull has much better tuning stability.
They should give Pat Smear some signatures too. He plays a Johnny A model (at least one of the variants).
Yes, compared to other EPI with crazy price increases, its price is quite good, but unfortunately it still uses laurel wood fingerboards and there are no other color versions available. Hope they release other color versions in the future.
i have the emily wolf sheraton in black and i love it too pieces, another es 335 style epiphone with the diamond f holes
Same price as the Epiphone Johnny A guitar, I had the orange burst. Same style as the Grohl guitar except it came with the Bigsby B3, was never able to bond with it so I traded it for a 62 Harmony Stratotone. I think Brian Jones was a lot hipper than Johnny A. I haven't made up my mind about Dave Grohl yet.
Long time listener, first time caller (maybe the second). Love the topic, love the show. I'm impressed on the tonal difference from the clean neck to the dirty bridge. And then everything in between.
So I’m curious. How does this compare to the Emily Wolfe Sheraton Stealth? I do realize it has proper Gibson pups Vs the Sheraton but it costs $400 more.
Ordered mine from Guitar Center and it showed up at my door with the entire vertical side of the box fully open to where I could just pull the case out, but no damage apparent. So I can't tell where that happened. But to top it, the neck was badly cracked on both sides starting at the nut. I took it to my local store and they said "yeah, we heard they're all like that"
I’ve heard a large number of people are getting them with neck damage
Yeah and I've heard 45 say "I've heard" for a lot of made up crap that he can't/won't substantiate with actual references or accreditations or outright lies. How about you?
@@egroegmcdonald9870 I’m no supporter but if you can’t stop thinking about him long enough to scroll through comments on a guitar page then wow. There’s been plenty of photo evidence to back up the neck damage claims.
@@egroegmcdonald9870 I'm in an Epi group on fb & have seen at least 10 in the past week arrive with neck damage
They come from China so I'm not surprised at all. China is well known for lax quality control in the guitar industry. You will need to do some filiing or fret work as soon as they come out of the box.
$1200 sounded super crazy at first, but a one piece neck, included hard case, and Gibson pickups are all really nice features for a guitar at that price point.
My '13 Epi '59 Joe Bonamassa Sig LP in Pelham Blue was less than half as much new with BB2's, cts pots and switch, making the 'but you get Gibson electronics' pitch kinda funny for these new Sigs.

I've tried getting one and sold out everywhere gutted
How exactly do they choose what models get the laurel or rosewood fretboards?
pretty sure all epi's (that dont have ebony or pau ferro) have laurel, and gibsons (that dont have ebony) have rosewood
All Epiphones that don't get Ebony gets Laurel, none get Pau Ferro, which would be better than Laurel, just gotta cherry pick for the colour, but it should feel close to Ebony, so that's a plus.
I’m in line for one at sweetwater.
I’ve got a confession to make; I dig it.
Want one in black 🤘🏻
Still 50/50 on the Pelham Blue.. Ebony or white and I would buy it now!
I wish all I had to complaint about was the price… being a lefty, Epiphone have completely ignored that section of their market. Did the same with the new Firebirds.
This guitar is a monster...
The neck is huge...which I like...the pick ups are nice...I played it through a Fender blues Jr. and a Marshall JCM 2000 High gain dual lead. Sounds amazing. Considering the Gibson pick ups and that it comes with a nice case it's definitely worth the price. Especially for those who don't want to invest 3 to 4 grand in a Gibby 335. Again this neck is huge. Thanks Epiphone and Dave Grohl.
I want this same guitar but as a es-339!
Huge guitar. Sounds great. I bet Buckethead could make that guitar look smaller..
Someone returned one of these to Guitar Center Toledo today where I work. Its really neat, but its just not my vibe
I got the Epi 59 Les Paul Inspired by and it was $899 which is what I feel it is worth. It is an excellent guitar, but please. Anything the murphy labs Gibsons are all way out of working musician's budgets who aren't playing huge stadium tours.
now they need to do an actual trini
I waited to get this guitar until you reviewed it, and now that you did it, I'm going to buy one. Thank you!
I hope you enjoy it!
Love it, think it's cheap for the specs, if they offer it in other colors in the future, I'd probably get one.
cool guitar for a good price too!
I'm definitely modding it to look like the Trini Lopez model
Dammit, am I getting the DG-335 over the EVH SA-126? This video may have convinced me. Thanks!
I can accept this price point better than the firebirds. Burstbuckers and a hardshell case are at least objectively pricey upgrades over the standard 335/Riviera/etc and these are still somehow $400 cheaper than the Firebirds with a more labour-intensive construction method and the premium they're paying for the signature and endorsement. I'm still not personally interested, but it's a significantly less absurd price:feature ratio.
