HIKING THE OVERLAND TRACK - 8 Days Trekking on Tasmania's Most Iconic Adventure

- We have wanted to hike the Overland Track in Tasmania for over a decade, and after finally getting to complete it recently, we can say that it was worth the wait!
Tasmania's Overland Track is a 65km multi-day adventure through Cradle Mountain National Park and Lake St Clair National Park, crossing over gorgeous alpine plateaus and alongside the tallest mountains in the state. We spent 8 days hiking the Overland Track, and with all the side trips we walked 113km. We booked our hike at the end of January 2021.
We did the self-guided Overland Track walk independently, carrying all our camping gear, food and clothes with us the entire way. The highlights included summiting Mount Ossa, hiking to Pine Valley, climbing the Acropolis, camping by Lake Windermere, up Mount Oakleigh and Pelion East, and plenty more. The Overland Track hike in Tasmania is one of the best adventures you can do in Australia, and we're so glad we walked it when we had the chance.

Thanks for showing us the side trips. I did this in 2017, overweight with a lot of hiking experience. I found the first day super hard. It took us 10 hours to do and it was 32 degrees!! Every other day was a piece of cake for me but no side trips except the waterfalls. All 24 of us also slept in the hut each night and we all became such good friends and told stories and got to know each other. It made it all worth while
This is one of the best videos of the Overland I've seen so far, thanks for doing all this work for us. It's really helped me with the planning process. I love how enthusiastic and positive you two are, what a great team.
Great video! Little note to anyone following along though.... please try to avoid using cup hooks and damaging the platforms.
We took extra rope to use the little rock big rock method, and platform fish hooks from Amazon if nothing else worked. But we very easily set up our X-Mid with what was provided and a little imagination. No need to screw anything new in.
Wow loved your video. I first did the overland track in 1975 as a student of Melbourne High. I loved the hike with the other boys and teachers. The place has been absolutely developed for the better. Food is easier, gear is great, mobile phones,...

I did Mt Ossa on 30 Sept 2021. The gnarly bit, as you described it, was covered in snow with only a few rocks protruding from it. The summit was very sketchy as the snow frequently gave way and I plunged crotch deep before extracting myself on more occasions than I could recount. The summit was clear for 10 minutes with full panoramic views then the cloud closed it and that was the end of the views. The descent was much quicker as much of it was controlled sliding on the backside. The Overland was something I had wanted to do for many a year and thought the opportunity had passed me by. I was so happy to have the experience especially the first day when I finally moved beyond the Kitchen Hut after trudging up Marions Lookout following a dump of snow two days earlier.,. I'll be doing it again. Oakleigh looks like something I will have to do. Fortunately I live in NW Tasmania so I can reach Pelion from another point - Arm River - and Oakleigh awaits. Great video. Loved it.

Great vid! I’ve done the overland 3 times in my late teens, early 20s (now in my 40s), and can no longer do long walks due to osteoarthritis so it was nice to watch this, reminisce and see the changes in huts etc. Also it wasn’t as controlled back then so we saw all sort’s walking through! We also did it both directions which I don’t think is allowed anymore.

Did this when I was 12 years old, such a great hike. We had similar weather on the first day, 100+kph winds at the top but warmed up by the end
What a great experience. Did you do it with friends or family? The weather gets crazy. Good old mountain weather. :)
it is a good walk, as a Tasmanian I love that area. I did it 2002 in January and one day it was cold and wet and next day 30 degrees Celsius. Hoping to do again in Jan 2024.

Our pleasure! So glad you found this video helpful. We hiked it in late January. Highly recommend bringing layers as it gets cold at night. We were in down jackets at night. Spend 9 days on the overland track in the 90s, 5 days of horizontal rain and total whiteout, 4 days of paradise, I believe that's about average in Feburary, overall a great hike.

Interesting video. Hiked the O/L track, in 5 days, Feb 1980. Beautiful sunshine for 4 days and a misty /drizzly last day. Love the wooden platforms for pitching your tents. Jarryd, how do you talk with your mouth almost closed?

So glad you enjoyed it. That is amazing you booked your hike spot. My backpack was 17kg and Jarryd’s was 20kg. We did have food and cooking gas for 10 days.

Can you share with us what was the most important thing for this trip and can one buy all the package foods from the starting point?
Hi Nora, sorry about the late reply. Absolutely. You could definitely do it in 8 days.
The food you can all get in Tasmania at any supermarket before you leave. Just give yourself some time, maybe a day to prep. We got the dehydrated food from a company called Strive Foods which are a Tasmania company. We got it shipped to a post office so it was ready for us waiting. We used these only for dinners. For breakfast we had instant porridge that we got from the supermarket and for lunch we had cheese, Vegemite on crackers. We had lots of Sam's protein bars that we ate along the way too. At night after dinner we treated ourselves with a little chocolate. You can get all that food from a supermarket.
- We recommend getting a water bladder, that was very helpful.
- Take a pack away bag for the side trips.
- Put all your food in a dry bag. There are cheeky animals that love getting into the food, especial possums.
- Take an extra food meal just incase. You may need extra energy one night and you have it there.
- You will always be hungry. You are hiking all day and are not eating the calories you need. You will be ok don't worry.
- Take electrolytes. They were good on the days we felt flat.
- Leave early every day. It is always better to have more time than less time.
- Take sock liners so you do not get blisters.
- Do not over pack you backpack. Only take what you need for personal items.
- Make sure you have good rain gear. Whether is unpredictable.
- Stretch every night. It will help you for the next day.
- Make sure you book your transport or have it organised before you leave for the hike.
- If you are feeling up for it, walk out. The boat ferry is way over priced.

Hey guys! Great video btw. We are going in a few days so this video was helpful. Did most people stay in tents? Was there a fear of COVID? I am wondering if the huts are warmer?
most people stay in tents as hut spots are not guaranteed and fill up fast, of course you have to bring tents so it doesn't really matter, i did it last year in early April and i stayed in a hut one night and camped 6 in a tent. Id say its probably about 30% of people who stay in the huts before they fill up, leaving about 70 percent to camp in tents

How do you charge your cameras and phones whilst on the hike?
We took a power bank and charged our camera and phone on the go. You just have to spare the batteries to make it through the hike.

The phone reception is hit and miss. When you are at the top of mountain it works sometimes but most of the hike you are out of phone signal. Hope that helps.

I have noticed nobody actually walks the track properly any more , you cut five kilometres from the start by not starting at the visitor centre and missed some of the best walking along the lake 19 kms
Technically the historical start point is Waldheim, up on the hill around from Ronny Creek. But agreed, the walk from the Rangers Station is lovely and worth the effort, although if people are keen on a summit of Cradle and/or Barn Bluff on the first day too, then starting at Ronny Creek (or Dove Lake and heading up the Chain Track) isn’t necessarily a bad idea.
