  • How to remove and replace broken shift tube in 1994 f250. Also how to calibrate gear selector, drop steering column, and remove key lock cylinder/ignition. Similar to other Ford shift tubes from 1988-1993. not sure about super duty.

    Multiple shift tube breakage can be caused by a stiff shift cable. Rocks can get in behind the trans shift lever causing a hard to get into park as well. 40+ YRS. Retired Ford Tech.

    Hi what if my f350 is slipping like that but it's not broken would it be the same thing as yours? I see the previous owner put electrical tape on one of the rubber boots and one of the braces that hold it in place is broken.

    • @THUNDERstroke73
      @THUNDERstroke73  7 років тому

      Hard to say without seeing. But if it's really loose but not broken I'd check the 2 bolts on the very back. It's very common they become loose. Also bushing could be worn but you can check the 2 bolts in back pretty easy by looking up under the dash

    Watched your video. Made the swap, bolted it all back up. Didn't notice the spring and fat lever on forward on the end of shaft until examining broken part. Disassembled, swapped in the old spring and lever, reassembled. Now it shifts again, but won't turn over. I dis-connected the battery, but did not pull the ignition switch. Headlights very bright, fan motor strong, makes me wonder if I need to pull the ignition and reinstall it?

    • @THUNDERstroke73
      @THUNDERstroke73  8 років тому

      Ya that's odd. I'd try pullin it and put it back in. I've never had that happen. Thanks for watching

    • @chippinfoo
      @chippinfoo 8 років тому

      Cleaned battery posts, replaced cable ends, replaced ignition tumbler with new tumbler, same results. Was told that there is a brake pedal switch on the end of the column near the firewall that may have come disconnected and if disconnected would prevent the ignition from turning over. Pouring rain at the moment will check tomorrow while charging battery.

    • @adamm74
      @adamm74 7 років тому

      Paul SkillHorder, to my best knowledge there is a safety switch that will keep the truck from starting if it is in gear (reverse, drive, 2, or 1). This switch keeps the motor from even turning over!!! I've had this problem with a loose shifter and remedied it by shifting it to anything else and putting it back in park and it started like normal. So you've made the swap and your motor will not turn over, I would put money on this being the problem. Maybe the safety switch alignment is off? I know this is an old comment, I hope it helps if you haven't fixed it yet or to others in the future.

    If my 97 Lariat shifter is really loose but still works, just hard to tell what gear you put it in, and have to wiggle it a little as you go thru thru gears, is it do to this shift tube, or am i having some other problem?

    • @THUNDERstroke73
      @THUNDERstroke73  8 років тому +2

      Start by laying under your dash and tighten the 2 back bolts at the end of the shifter. It's very common for them to wiggle loose. They're the bolts that point towards the driver seat

    • @dog-gonedogs6939
      @dog-gonedogs6939 8 років тому +1

      THUNDERstroke73 I forgot to tell you thanks! I did and they were terribly loose. I tightened them and it is a lot better,
      but i think i may have waited too long because it is still not just right.
      With that said, do you think i will have to replace something now? And what part should i check next?
      Thanks a bunch!

    • @THUNDERstroke73
      @THUNDERstroke73  8 років тому

      I don't want to lead you in the wrong direction but if it was my truck I'd start by taking the column apart like I did in the video to see if anything looks wrong. I'm sure with a bad or missing bushing that it would have some slop in it. But once you have the column cover off, play with the shifter and see if you can spot where it gets loose. Wish I could be more help, just harder to figure out over the Internet.
      Thanks for watching!!!

    • @leebarnes655
      @leebarnes655 8 років тому +1

      What happens is the formed steel plate that the two bolts go thru gets wallowed out holes and alignment is off by the missing metal there. Ours got bent so was never right with the world, you had to do a reach around steering wheel with the left hand and wrench the gear shift into park in order to turn the key off fully to where one could pull it out. So now it all just broke again, thanks for the video - it helps. Overdrive switch and light failed some weeks ago so need that too, new shaft and new formed steel end piece that couples to the transmission cable too.

      @THUNDERstroke73  9 років тому

      Possibly a linkage problem? Lay under the truck and start by manually putting it in park. You can see on the drivers side of the tranny where the linkage meets the tranny. That lever it connects to goes forward and back. If I remember, strait back is park. Strait forward all the way is 1st. So get it in park and then check that your shift tube is in the correct place and tightened up. If that don't work, then I'd guess linkage issue or tranny problem. Pretty hard to diagnosis over the Internet. Good luck

    I have always thought this gear shifter was a low point for Ford. I find them super cheap-feeling and quite a few at work have fallen off in the past. Maybe the falling off is just a loose screw. At work th ough, many of the high mileage older ford's have loose shifters and it is hard to tell what gear they are in. Ford's newer style shifters are ace.

    after decades,,, Ford has not yet addressed this serious issue or tried to correct it's defective design. this is why the US is laughed at,, also why most people drive Toyota

    You skipped the part where you remove & replace the shifter CABLE . Getting that cable (mine needed replacing) to seat in the bracket with absolutely zero room under the dash because it's right next to the wiring bundle is a b#*ch !
