  • HAPPY VLOGMAS DAY 2! Today I'm spilling the tea on the problem with law school and why law schools are getting it wrong👀. I discuss various areas of law outside of big law, what billable hours are and of course give some motivation to anyone going against the "traditional" route on their career or life 💛 #vlogmas2021 #lawyervlog #lawschool

    This video is amazing already. I’m a black female attorney who also graduated in 2019! My first job was in big law and my billables said were INSANE and I was definitely the only black attorney there and I was uncomfortable to speak out about anything. The environment was too toxic for me; so I left big law. Surprisingly, I make more money now in a smaller firm. I was very shocked at this!! We need to meet for some coffee! We could talk about this forever! My school definitely pushed big law.

    This was so helpful! Thank you! I’m not a lawyer and did not go to law school .. I actually studied chemistry in preparation to go to med school however I have been in beauty for over 30 years ( since I was a little girl ) .. in the last recent years I have been able to bridge the gab between my passion for medicine and the human body with my purpose and gifts .. I got my esthetician license and I now help women of color treat their dark spots and acne at home ❤️

    This video couldn’t come at a better time! I am a 3L law student very interested in escaping the traditional paths of law and everything you are saying about needing more lawyers in the social media arena is so true! I also love how you are focusing on non traditional law careers or JD advantage jobs because people don’t realize how many doors just getting a law degree itself, without even being licensed as an attorney will open

      SAY THAT SIS! I'm so glad to be in a position to bring light to sooo many other amazing opportunities we get by just having a law degree and still being able to make great money while finding work/life balance in areas of law that we actually enjoy 👏🏾

    I define what success looks like for me. 💕 I definitely agree too, becoming a lawyer/having a JD can open so many doors and opportunities. You don’t have to get stuck doing the traditional thing. Also, the tea on billable hours is so true! I was a legal assistant before and I’ve seen attorneys stay so late at the office and some even go during the weekend! 😕

    I’m only 7 months into my first associate position and the billables are killing me! I really can’t see myself doing this beyond a year. It’s worse because I’m the first associate for my senior attorney’s firm (she founded her own animal law firm which is badass, but I feel so much guilt for not hitting my weekly targets because I don’t want to lose money for her business). Ugh, it’s rough, but I really appreciate your honest thoughts on this. It feels better knowing I’m not totally out of line for feeling this way!

    Every time I watch your videos I feel the tug towards law school. I’m finishing up legal ethics and environment (undergrad) and we had to post an opinion on what is a valid offer in a case study. I had a different argument based on portions of the agreement that were unfulfilled. I argued outside the scope of the text but within the law. In real life I know I would be expected to win for my client but in school it’s different. It’s also interesting bc I’m probably 35 years older than my class mates. I love the argument that I put forth and the research that I did to make the argument. I would love for you to talk about law school options for older students. Such as do you think the expense and time is worth it at 60? People are living longer and healthier lives. Older people are returning to the work force in droves. I would love to know your thoughts. “I define what success looks like for me”. Tfs 💕🙏🏾

      OMGSH! I have to put this out there....you do NOT look like you're 60. More like 25-30. You look amazing! Beauty & Brains. I pray that I look this good when I reach that milestone. ❤️ I'm so glad you asked this question. I'm 47 and really want to attend law school, but I worry about my age and if it's even worth my time and money. At the moment I'm healthy, sharp, and have a serious thirst for knowledge....not to mention (like most black women😜) is a great debater.
      I truly look forward to her answer to your question.

    • @KameronMonet
      @KameronMonet  2 роки тому +3

      Aww thank you so much for sharing sis! First off, AGE AIN'T NOTHIN BUT A NUMBER. But seriously, my law school graduating class had a range of early 20s to mid 60s. I always have said non-traditional students tend to do better [and even in my class they were usually top of the class] because seasoned students can bring in their life and work experiences to law school which adds an amazing additional to the classroom and legal profession! Also, law school isn't like undergrad or other graduate programs. We were all there for a specific goal which really doesn't care about age. We were all just trying to learn, understand, and adapt to an intense environment that was challenging no matter the age. I hope that make sense and helps 👏🏾

    This is such a great video omg! It’s so crazy, just 2 days ago I was looking up how much Political Science professors make! I have not heard one person talk about taking that path, but it should be talked about.
    When it comes to big law, I honestly think law schools push it so much because of it helps their rankings. Like one example, I heard that people who work in like solo firms don’t count when it comes to employment after graduation, so law schools will never push starting your own firm because it will hurt their ranking 😞

    I’m a 2l and I wish law schools would help us more with the entrepreneurial aspect. I want to run my own firm lol. I believe it’s because law schools are just so stuck on tradition.

      I completely agree! What helped me was asking my fellow lawyerpreneur friends who have started firms or consulting companies like me and also asking a lot of questions while working at a law firm to understand the ends and outs 👏🏾👀

    Hi I'm very new to your channel! I just watched you do a webinar with PAD and it intrigued me. I am a 1L, and while my school doesn't push big law (we're a public interest school), public interest can be just as demanding on an attorney's time as big law. Fortunately, my school teaches a lot of mindfulness and how to set boundaries within the legal space, but I'm not sure that would be enough for me. I love law and I'm very drawn to the legal profession, but I find the general legal culture thrives off a poor work-life balance and doesn't appreciate when attorneys try to balance those scales. For those reasons, I've always wanted to pursue a nontraditional legal career, but I'm not sure how to find what would work for me or how utilize my JD while doing it. Do you have any tips on how to embark on a nontraditional legal career path and or how to determine which direction to go? Thanks 💓

    I love this video! I'm finishing up my last year and my offer letter for a firm is signed but realizing I'm interested in marketing and helping influencers but I might as well finish the JD lol. Do you think its possible to get into that space without being an influencer yourself? I only want to be behind the scenes. Thank you for this insight, truly right on time!

      Thanks so much Brianna and you're so welcome!! ABSOLUTELY! You do not have to be an influencer to work with influencers as an attorney or consultant. However, you do need to be well versed in the industry terminology, systems, processes, laws, regulations, etc. so you can accurately help your clients 👏🏾
