    Daniel didn't attend Uni but did go to two very good schools and received A grades in his A Levels, think he just reads a lot and is naturally bright :) Graham Norton not only has his brilliant chat show, you really should react to some of those, (Bill Murray was hysterical) but has had a regular radio show for 12 years, he presents the UK leg of the Eurovision Song Contest every year , he acts, TV, film and stage, has written newspaper columns and is an award winning author, and that's just part of his career, as you said, he's a bit busy...lol

    Debbie McGee (she's actually only 63) was the assistant and wife of one of Britain's best known magicians - Paul Daniels (died 2016). Daniels was very big in the 80s/early 90s, but magic sort of faded from popularity a bit. Debbie still makes an appearance here and there (you may have seen her on WILTY on the receiving end of one of Bob Mortimer's jokes), but is often known for being interviewed by Caroline Ahern in her alter-ego of Mrs Merton (a sort of spoof chat show) with the superbly crafted question/joke - "What first attracted you to the multi-millionaire Paul Daniels?".

    I believe that for the most part, the special/non-comedian guests have at the very least questions that are aimed specifically towards them, to help include them more into the quiz.
    If they famously played a wizard in film, and studied English medieval history (I'm not sure Daniel did), then those type questions will pop up.

    Don't let Mr. Mack 'fool' you. He probably understood the i-before-e explanation just fine apart from a -- cognitive hiccup when Mr. Fry said there are more exceptions to the "rule" than there are words that follow it. He's practiced at humorously challenging pedantry by playing the fool (My favorite variety of irony). I strongly suspect he does it just for the laughs and NOT because he thinks refined knowledge is a bad thing. Challenging fussy pedants like Steven Fry and David Mitchell must be particularly fun.

    Prior to the Industrial Revolution in Britain, class was generally rich [aristocracy and nobility - upper class] and poor [workers - lower class]. However, the industrial Revolution developed a middle class of factory owners, entrepreneurs and associated pen pushers. This developed into the upper class, the upper middle class, the lower middle class and the workers. This class consciousness is still prevalent in Britain although class categorisation became very hazy from the 1980s.

    You piqued my curiosity about Daniels education! It seems he didn't go to university and was mostly taught by tutors on set (being Harry Potter also seems to have made school difficult due to his peers behaviour towards him). I'd guess that the tutors had time for a more personalised education and Daniel certainly seemed to have acquired more magic history than most!

    Historically the middle-class was quite a small class, especially when compared to the huge working-class. The idea of a class system basically grew out of feudalism. Nowadays the middle-class is the largest class but before the second half of the 2th Century, the working-class was the largest class. For most of the history of the class system, the middle-class were viewed, by most, as a relatively small elite. They were definitely below the ruling class/aristocracy but were far wealthier than the working-class and had access to a certain degree of power. They were also likely to have had an education of some kind. The British view of the middle-class stems from this historical view. The class system, in the US, was present but took a different form, there being no aristocracy and no single historical tradition of class. The middle-class became something to aspire to, as opposed to Britain, where the middle-class was looked down on by the upper class and was largely reviled by the working-class. To this day, a large proportion of working-class Americans describe themselves as middle-class and a significant proportion of middle-class Brits describe themselves as working-class.

    I heard some guests actually demanded the questions in advance. And there has been those who also seemed to have looked up every answer. The reactions from the other participants and Stephen was noticeably less enthusiastic with some guests, so I guess those are the ones.
    But I think Daniel Radcliffe knew all that. The Harrying of the North is something you don't need a higher education to know if you have had a British education, I think. When you are younger, the school knowledge is far easier to remember. So when the others are middle age, of course he's better. And the rest he shined at was magic history, just showing he's good at remember trivia he learned about the subject that movie series was about.
    He was adorably awkward and nervous though. Radcliffe seems to be a humble person, not letting his fame get to his head, and being in this crowd of veteran entertainers in front of and audience may have been tough.

    I learned recently (quite possibly from comments on your videos now that I think about it) that contestants have the option to get the questions in advance, but most don't use it. The spirit of it is in case they need to prepare jokes, but Stephen Fry has said there's one contestant who always asks for the questions, gives all the right answers, and is quite a bore about it.
    That said, I don't think Daniel Radcliffe knew the questions ahead of time, he seemed quite surprised, excited and nervous when something came up that he knew about. I know he's an actor but I feel like if your goal was to come off as knowledgeable you wouldn't put on the giddy and flustered act.

Christmas crackers have long been a tradition here in Newfoundland (I assume because of our being "Britain's oldest colony" and most of our population are of English and Irish descent). Nope... In the movie you get 150 points and the game ends and your team wins.
    In the books it's a tiny bit different. Catching the snitch still ends the game and gives 150 points but doesn't auto win like in the film.

    • @Zomdra
      @Zomdra 2 роки тому +2

      I know it might seem that way because of Oliver Wood oversimplifying his explanation of the rules for Harry (and the audience) as "catch this and we win" in the first film, but it's generally accepted that the 150 points rule applies to the films too.

      I assumed that school teams arent as good as the official team so they never need to worry about having a 150 point swing which would ensure the seeker's team lost the game
