I don't know that I could luv this band anymore than I do! Only discovered them this year and slowly working through their EXTENSIVE catalog of amazing songs. From now on and the sayonakidori instrumental are my favorites so far. This video was a whole different take on the band for me. I am so super impressed with their efforts in every way! I was thinking, Japanese hard rock band, but they are so much more that that , in the most unexpected and amazing ways. This song, this video... just WOW! This really showcases Sakai SO well! I really don't have enough words to adequately express all that I feel they are doing, and are and the supreme effort that is going into all of this. I just so appreciate that they are doing all of this for us for, their fans!
In four years they have surprised me over and over and over, they are just so over-the-top good.

Ok, another observation... How in the world are these ladies so beautiful, so feminine, and yet so badass all at the same time? They are something I have never witnessed. How???

I'm a Japanese girl. Fortunately, there are English subtitles but some words are not translated into English. And there are special words used in the Geisha/Maiko industry in the lyrics of this song, so I translate it. I hope that it helps you guys xD
Hana Kanzashi: Hairpin with ornamental flowers. Geisha, especially Maiko, wear different Hana Kanzashi for each month of the year.
Darari Obi: It is a very long Obi worn by Maiko.
Karan Koron: Clip-Clop. It is a "Pokkuri" sound worn by Maiko.
Senjyafuda: Maiko's business card. Everyone wants it because it is auspicious.
Ware Shinobu: Maiko wear their hair in the Ware Shinobu style.
Erigae: The turning of the collar. Ceremony where a Maiko become a Geisha.

About the part of "Yoisa Yoiyasa" It's just something to shout out; it doesn't have any special meanig. Japanese traditional songs used when Maiko dances have words like "Yoisa Yoiyasa" xD

When I first heard the chorus, I thought it was strange with the words chosen in the chorus like

That's your life
So I looked up the history of maiko and geisha due to my misinterpretation of the lyrics and found many a interesting thing that would make the chorus a darker tone, but I'm sure the girls meant nothing but respect to the Maiko and Geisha.
I was wondering if you could try to re-translate the chorus in a way that doesn't sound sexual?
Or do you think there is some undertone to the history of maiko and geisha in the chorus that suggests that?
The history of the maiko/geisha is interesting. Some girls were basically property as they were sold by their families to pay off a debt not to mention that all geisha were not treated equally. I was reading that geisha had to do what their owner (danna) told them to do until laws were created to protect them. There is also the Mizuage and either the owner taking the maido's virginity or selling it to the highest bidder. I definitely see a darker side of history with maiko and geisha, but modern day are completely different with rules and laws that give them freedom and rights.

@@kukukachu Thank you so much xD About the lyrics of the chorus part that you pointed out, I think that Japanese is translated into English directly. Because they are rock bands, they will not mind using words such as "butt" or something xD

You are very familiar with geisha and maiko and it is great! Their world is so mysterious that even Japanese people can not know the real thing. All things have light and shadow, and so will their world.
Unfortunately, when Japan was so poor and trafficked, there were so many girls that were sold to parents. However, I think that many of them are Yuujyo(prostitutes), not sold to become geisha and maiko. And.. It is a tragic fact when prostitution was legal. Geisha and Maiko must be beautiful, well-educated and musical talent. They should be respected regardless of why they became geisha or maiko. They are the talkers of Japanese beauty xD
Finally.. I will write my own translation. It's different from the original meaning, but I'm glad if you like it xD

The reasoning that came to mind thinking it was sexual is mainly the word chosen for the translation, but also, I know that Band Maid is a pop,punk, rock, metal band and pointing out the darker side of things while also praising it would be pretty punk. Not to mention that the music getting really heavy during that part also gave the illusion of them showing a different side as the other parts of the song are soft while the chorus is fast and heavy hitting.
Yea, it wasn't until 1957 where the prostitution protection act passed that women got their freedom I believe. So from what I read, I also was reading that not all geisha were treated equally. Even though geisha at bath houses were still geisha, they were expected to be sexual or so I read. I guess it really mattered what talent and class a geisha was, but I feel that their story hasn't been fully explored and people just praise the way it is today.

I really recommend going to the "Releases" tab in their channel and listening to albums. Many of their best songs don't have UA-cam videos. But yeah, this song's amazing.

この曲はchoose meの次に彩姫のボーカルが好きな曲です。曲全体の評価的には、choose meが1位でBloomingが2位です。まあ、バンドメイドは良い曲だらけなんですけどね。
聴けば聴くほど良くなる、こんな難しい言葉を良くロックに乗せたな。作詞と歌い手の能力にぶったまげるし、勿論作曲の素晴らしさもdefinitely great.

Its opening is epic, and the song's style is unique for BAND-MAIKO. The music video is very cool, they are all dressed in Kimono's. The lyrics are written in the Kyoto dialect. The Maikos are performing typical rituals as port of their training to become a Geisha. Band-Maid better watch out for the competition from BAND-MAIKO 🙂

Die gelungene Mischung von Hardrock und japanischer Tradition (in Kleidung und Einbindung klassischer Instrumente) macht den Unterschied zum Mainstream. Über die Qualität der Musik und des Videos gibt es wohl keine Diskussion - sie ist großartig. Warum bekommt dieses Video - immerhin schon gut 3 Jahre alt - nur so wenig Aufrufe?

This song really hits me not only because it is BAND-MAID(/KO) but because of all the references to Kyoto and Gion (as it is the place where my heart is). The Pagoda at Yasaka shrine, the scenes around Arashiyama, the side streets of Gion and the references to Geisha and Maiko (that I have seen on several occasions) and all of the things I have probably noticed sub-consciously. Saiki's voice, Kanami's composition, everyone's dedication to their craft.... Just brilliant all round.
I enjoy this video so much. And not just for the music. The scenery is epic and the ladies all look gorgeous i costume. I know it was a trial to film this video in the heavy costumes but it is one the the best videos I've ever seen. It's not just a music video, it's a work of art.

Absolutely, I agree. The contrast between traditional Japanese and - may I call it - hard rock, made this for me so special. Therefore, it would be very nice, if Band Maid could take this to another level - artistic wise - and make another 'secret lips' album. I know, this is not easy but it would be your masterpiece, I am sure as secret lips was already. Push it to the next level.

i know nothing of what/who MAIKO really are. i just stumble upon one youtuber talking about MAIKO for about 2 minutes. the guy said these MAIKO are somewhat similar to GEISHA so i think we should respect these MAIKO alot more . i knew a bit of what GEISHA are in the movie 'MEMORIES OF A GEISHA' .

t is a fantastic way to respect the traditions and culture while using present music to make their presentations as modern Geisha/Maiko it is as if the ancient Japanese world had not been replaced and its existence had continued to this day... all that was missing go for a walk and see the samurai walking around while the common people go about their day to day
