This is honestly by far one of my favourite childhood movies of all time, and probably my favourite movie of all time. I remember watching this as a kid during my childhood, and throughout the years and even now I can't help myself in thinking about it, and even watching this, listening to the songs, soundtracks or just recalling my childhood. Literally what a legendary song this is, same thing with the story behind it, the characters, the actors, the soundtracks, music and much more. Like every scene of the movie is just pure joy and emotion, same thing with its music. Even as I'm writing this I'm getting so much nostalgia and childhood memories of watching this and listening to this as a kid. Even to this day, this movie and its story still brings me to joy as well as tears to my eyes especially with the way I grew up and the very first time I saw it, like I could just keep going on and on about how much this movie means to me even to this day. There's honestly so much words that I could possibly describe it, but to get it you honestly have to feel it since it just bring so much joy, emotion, feelings and much more. Like it honestly wouldn't even fit this box, I wouldn't even have any more characteristics to describe it. Like honesty, its one of my all-time favourite movies since I was a kid during my childhood and its honestly nice to see that this film also did the same to many others, especially with my generation. Like even now, its so rare to find anyone else that watched it, or even finding it in general. Glad that I still have the original cassete for it, since my childhood when I first watched it as a kid. Like even now as I'm listening to this like I said earlier, it just sad how time just passes by so fast and you don't even realize it. Such an extremely underrated film this was, like nowadays its like a hidden treasure since even Google Play doesn't have it. Only orignals like us have the original cassette for it and I'm real glad that I got to watch it on cassette as a kid, and still have it till this day. Its even more sad, that all these legends that made our childhood pass, but like they always say time doesn't stop, it just keeps going on and on. Don't bad sad that its over, be happy that it happened. Such good times this was, and such a throwback to my childhood. Just pure nostalgia and childhood memories as well. At least it can somewhat still be found on UA-cam, even though there isn't much UA-cam videos of its song, soundtracks, movie, and etc. Its literally a long lost treasure that people like us got to experience it only which just makes it even more special. Not only that but no matter how many years passed, this song never ages and never gets old. It still brings back the first time I've ever heard it, watched it, experienced it, ithe pure emotion, joy, and etc. LIke they honestly just don't make movies like these anymore, especially songs like these. Kids nowadays don't even understand how much movies like these meant to us. That's what makes it so unique, special and iconic for all of us. This is literally my childhood especially Chanticleer & Glen Cambell how he was able to pull off being like the King of Rock N' Roll, Elvis. I remember even trying to dress up like Chanticleer by having my shirt out, dangle and etc. Such good times. There's just so much to say, describe and feel. Even the front cover of the cassette brings back so many memories when I look at it from time to time.
I never heard of this movie until I found it on Netflix, and I did enjoy it. When I looked up the rotten tomatoes, I was surprised to how poor it was. While I'll admit the ending was a little weird, considering how I thought the whole thing was just a dream, only for it to be, real? But yeah, I can agree that this movie was good. I'd give it a solid 8/10 for how good the animation is. Those kinds of things are extremely hard to do, let alone to how many hours and money is put into these kinds of movies. It sucks that the company who made this movie, Sullivan Bluth Studios, went out of business in 95, but you an I can agree it had a good run while it lasted. I was born in 2001, but my family exposed me to the classic gems, 2 examples being An American Tail and The Pebble and the Penguin, and my grandparents still have the VHS box and tape of that movie. Movies like those, while yes, received negative reviews on Rotton Tomatos, but we shouldn't rely on that, rather, rely on peoples reviews to get a good idea of what the movie is. Rock a Doodle is an interesting movie, hell, it's even available to watch for free on UA-cam Movies. It's movies like that, that remind me of the golden age of cartoons, and to this day, most of them still live on to spread the same nostalgia that we had back then. Dan D, if you get this comment, your comment has really touched me, and I appreciate it.
@@loganentertainment1814 I got this movie when I was 3 and had no idea wtf it was that I was watching. I remembered re-watching it when I was 11 or 12 and thought it was so strange and surreal and rambling
This scene gave me nightmares as a kid. Now I find it hilarious. Especially the dog running in and biting the owl's leg. Oh and Edmond saying he's a furry. Little did they know.
Nya, they may have known. The first fursuit on record dates back to before 1940, I think, and when this movie came out furry conventions had been around for years. Agreed - certainly here. The rest of his appearances don't always live up to this scene, but this is one of the better and more memorable 'villainous entrances' out there. It's a very menacing way to contrast animation with live-action, too - the Duke is scary in the rest of the movie (when he is) because he's this huge, powerful figure with magic dragon-breath, but here, it's because he's alien; he's other. He's a bit of this little kid's storybook that has stepped out of it and is NOT friendly at all.

Curious thing I just noticed: Rock-A-Doodle has many strong parallels with the Wizard of Oz. Dorothy and Edmund both grow up on a farm. Both are dreamers with strong imaginations. Both are confronted with a natural disaster that threatens their homes. Both may or may not have ended up in a coma due to getting hurt during the disaster. Their transition into a dreamlike journey to retrieve something precious (returning to their home and rebuilding it) is represented by a transition in the art style. The Wizard of Oz goes from sepia tones to color, Rock-A-Doodle goes from live acting to animation. Both face dangerous, powerful magicians as their antagonists, acquire quirky but lovable and loyal friends to aid in their journey, and travel to a great, impressive city to meet an important "king" (the Wizard/Chauntecleer). Both must end up confronting a great truth (Dorothy realizes how much home and her family meant to her, while Edmund realized that to save his farm, he must find bravery in himself) and then confront and defeat the magician chasing them in order to return home. Both are met with skepticism by friends and family when they awaken home and find everything as it should be and tell their story.

I like the lighting they did on the Duke here when he’s in the live-action set of Edmund’s room and i wished the movie would’ve been a lot better if they toned down Phil Harris’ narration to a mininum rather than narrate over everything that was established in the movie.
I honestly didn't think this was a bad movie. Although, Disney does the same thing. Also, The Duke is an AMAZING Villain, and Christopher Plummer did a great job. R.I.P
The only thing I'd have really changed about it is to further clarify how the sun was able to come up without Chanticleer in the beginning. Watching it as an adult and hearing from other fans, I eventually got the answer that what happened was the animals (Including Chanticleer himself) misunderstood what Chanticleer's singing/ crowing actually did; Rather than bringing up the sun, its power was driving back the rain clouds, which if they gathered together too thickly and heavily, could block out the sun. The movie could have admittedly done a better job explaining that fact.

@@fivertherabbit1747 Unfortunately not, but I threw the Duke's black cape over his head, held it down and sang 'Motorman' from Roary the Racing Car, and just to top it all, when he demanded to be unhanded, I turned on the light, and then let him go. That was classic!
Nya, oh boy, that reminds me of a dream I had a long time ago. Do you remember Chernabog, the giant demon from "Fantasia"? I used to have recurring nightmares about him. Suddenly I could control what was happening and you can bet I took advantage of it. Ergo, Chanticleer portrayed by Daryl Hall, Edmond turned into a cat when He enters the storybook world instead of the Duke using His magic breath, Edmond’s hometown threatened with an outbreak of coyotes and the storybook world threatened with the Endless night, and Edmond’s group heading for the city by wagon to the train station, and hopping a ride in a train, then having to walk a few miles then using roller skates the rest of the way?

*This was the last role that Phil Harris voiced an animated character after the Jungle Book, The Aristocats, and Robin Hood the only characters he voiced were Baloo the Bear, Thomas O Malley and Little John and Patou the Dog before he passed away*
0:06 Hey! Isn't that the old tigger plush from the original winnie the pooh stories.
Yep, Bluth worked on Winnie The Pooh and Tigger Too so it's a nice nod to that
So this is where the term "Furry" originated

@@whitedragon1204 it's the earliest time ive heard out by name. Does ancient Egyptian read furry?
I mean i acknowledge they had a lot of gods that were animal like
The kid is using it wrong, it's not if you dress as an animal
It's if you're into animals with human characteristics
Rest in peace, Phil Harris.
The Voice Actor in 3 Disney Animation Films:Baloo from The Jungle Book(1967) Thomas O, Malley from The Aristocats(1970) and Little John from Robin Hood(1973)
How old was Phil Harris in 1991 before he died in 1995?
I recently had a dream about this clip, where the Grand Duke of Owls appeared in my room and attacked me, just like he does to young Edmond. But unlike Edmond, I managed to fight back, and stay in human form. That owl met his match with me, and came off second best. ;)
Did you meet any of the other characters
@@fivertherabbit1747 Unfortunately not, but I threw the Duke's black cape over his head, held it down and sang 'Motorman' from Roary the Racing Car, and just to top it all, when he demanded to be unhanded, I turned on the light, and then let him go. That was classic!
Nya, oh boy, that reminds me of a dream I had a long time ago. Do you remember Chernabog, the giant demon from "Fantasia"? I used to have recurring nightmares about him. Usually in these dreams I would be a little girl again and Chernabog would come out of a crt TV and come for me. That's how things went until one night when the dream became lucid. Suddenly I could control what was happening and you can bet I took advantage of it. Still being a little girl I enlarged myself until I was bigger than him and then I proceeded to push him into his mountain peak and covered him with a very large rock so he couldn't get out again. Revenge for me and the people of Bald Mountain!
I'm sorry you guys have nightmares of movie villains attacking you.😟
@@blue-sea8901 I wouldn't be sorry if I were you. It wasn't all really that bad. That owl fancies himself so high and mighty, but I feel like I properly knocked him down a few bumps, (or should I say, punches?)😉I barely gave him time to react. I've had plenty of dreams where movie villains try to harm me, but I've always given them a far more humiliating comeuppance than they suffer in their movies.

They must have made some changes like a lot of Don Bluth films do. If you look closely they changed Edmonds dialogue when the Duke picks him up. We hear "Mom! Dad! Wake me up." But his lips say "No no no. Stop. You can't do this."

Since Don Bluth launched a new cartoon studio in Sept. 2020, I wonder if Rock-a-Doodle will be remade with plenty of changes? Ergo, Chanticleer portrayed by Daryl Hall, Edmond turned into a cat when He enters the storybook world instead of the Duke using His magic breath, Edmond’s hometown threatened with an outbreak of coyotes and the storybook world threatened with the Endless night, and Edmond’s group heading for the city by wagon to the train station, and hopping a ride in a train, then having to walk a few miles then using roller skates the rest of the way?
Wow, I didn't know he was still around.
@@hitkid2456 Oh he is, also his number one associate, Gary Goldman. Around 2015-2016, he launched an Indiegogo campaign for a theatrical adaptation of Dragon's Lair, but despite being successful, not much materialized since. In fact, apparently it has been turned from a hand-drawn animated feature into a live-action movie starring Ryan Reynolds (ughhhh). But Bluth still has plans for hand drawn animation regardless.
